•Chapter 10•

[Trevor]

A few hours ago, I was at home. I was playing basketball, tolerating my annoying siblings.

Next thing I know, I'm in an old warehouse, stuck inside because of heavy rain.
I'm with some people I barely know. I'm stuck on a wall and I can't move.

Now, there's a weird guy in a robe who also has glowing eyes.
If I could move my hands I would have pinched myself so I'll be sure that I wasn't dreaming.

The weird guy stood with his arms outstretched. A wild look lingered in his eyes as if he was expecting us to lunge at him. Honestly, I didn't see how we could since he literally had us stuck to a wall, unable to move.

Now, I was scared. No, it was a mix of emotion. Some, that I couldn't explain.
My life had been normal ever since I was born. At least as normal as the next guy. Yes, I'd moved a couple times and had to start a new life afresh everytime.

But in this past few days I'd been here at Sedona, weird things have just started happening to me.

There's the red flashing of light. Thrice, it felt like my arms were getting warmer and when I looked at my hands, they're red.

At first I thought it was just some reaction to some chemical and it would just stop and that was it. But this stuff had happened three times.

I can't say it's something that only I can see because I'm pretty sure Maddie noticed something earlier today at Davie's. That just proves it's something serious.

But then what the hell was that? What was happening to me? Should I ignore something like that or tell someone?

Now, there was the guy in the robe. How the hell was he keeping us glued to the wall with his arm outstretched?  Was it some sort of...magic?

Hell, I couldn't even believe I was thinking that.
But then how could you explain it?

The strange guy looked around the room, at each one of us as if searching for something.

He paused, staring off into space.
He stood perfectly still and his eyes started to glow white.
Then he started talking.
But soon I realized he wasn't talking to us.

"Yes," he said to the air. "I found them."
After a while, his expression changed. He looked stunned.

"Do we really need them all?" he said.
His expression changed again. This time he looked like he had been smacked on the forehead with a bat.

"What?! But they have no connection to the..."
He fell silent.

Then his eyes turned back to normal, grey and alarmed.

He stared back at us.
He stood for a moment and then dropped his hands.

We all dropped to the ground. I felt weak but I wanted to run out of the building now. I'm sure the others did too but for some reason we all stayed back.

"Spirits of Reina," he began, "we would meet soon."
With that he vanished.

I swear, Alexis actually rubbed his eyes to check if he was seeing things.

"Guys," Maddie said, "what just happened?"

"I..." I couldn't finish my sentence. I just stood there shaking my head.

"We should go," Alexis said.

We didn't argue.

We walked out into the rain which was pouring worse than ever.

Thankfully, Lucy's friend, a guy named Carl, was already out there waiting for us.

He helped us call Alexis's other driver who took me, Alexa and her brother home while Carl took Lucy and Maddie home.

I missed half of math class. The remaining half was a blur. Since I slept after midnight, I couldn't keep awake most of the morning.

I was nodding at my tray during lunch when Alexis walked over.
This time he didn't bang his tray on the table.
I looked up slowly at him. He looked tired.

"Hey," I said to him and dropped my head on the table.
He took a seat. A moment later, someone took another seat on the table. I looked up to see Alexa picking at her tray.

"Didn't get much of beauty sleep, huh?" I asked her.
She sighed.

"I wasn't even gonna come to school today," she said, "but Alexis said we all needed to talk."

"Yeah, speaking of the others, where are they?"

"I saw them a few tables behind," Alexa answered without looking up from the table.

I looked out of a window at the left side of the hall.
It was so sunny and bright that it was hard to believe there was a heavy rain last night.

"Um, things are probably weird enough already," Alexis started, bringing me back from my gaze, " but I have something to tell you Trevor. I already told Alexa but she didn't believe me."

"Alex, how could-" Alexa started but Alexis caught her off.

"Lemme talk Lex," he said and then faced me.

"Yesterday evening, before we left for the bar, like before you showed up, I was standing at my veranda, leaning on the rail. Suddenly, I saw a flicker of blue light flash on my arm and then go off instantly.

"At that time, Lex was coming down the stairs. I thought she was the one who did it but...she wasn't. I was kinda freaked about it."

"You sure you actually saw that light? I mean, it wasn't your eyes just-" I said.

"See? Even Trevor doesn't believe you," Alexa said to him.

Alexis sighed.

The place was silent for a moment before I spoke up.
"You know, dude, I might actually believe what you said, sorta."

Alexa glanced at me. "Why?"

"C'mon Alexa, you were in the same room with us yesterday when all that crazy stuff was happening. You saw it happen, it wasn't a dream. I don't get why you'd act like it never happened."

Alexa looked surprised for a moment.
"Besides," I continued, "something weird happened to me, I mean, has been happening for a while now."

Alexis stared at me curiously. "Yeah, what?"

I hesitated. I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell them. But, I was the one who brought it up. And Alexis already told me his own story.

I was still puzzled and uncertain about what happened last night so I decided to talk.

"Okay, so it's kinda weird but sometimes I'll just be on my own and-"

"Hey guys," someone said from behind me.

I turned around to see Maddie, the girl I met yesterday. She was with the other girl, Lucy.

"Hey," Alexis said to her.

"Can we sit?" she asked.

"Um, sure," Alexa mummured.
I think she was okay with Maddie sitting. Lucy was probably her problem.

"Um, Trevor, sorry you were saying something before I interrupted," Maddie apologized.

"Oh. Yeah, right. Um-" I paused, looking round at them nervously.
"So, I'm just there and my hands starts getting warmer and...when I look at them, they're red. It's happened like thrice this week."

Everybody went quiet. I scanned their faces. They had no expressions. No one said anything until Maddie spoke.

"Trevor. That time yesterday when we were at Davie's, was that one time?"

If I wasn't chocolate brown in complexion, my face would've been red.
I totally forgot Maddie was there when that happened.

Wait. Something else happened that day.
"Maddie," I said looking into her ocean blue eyes, "Those bushes couldn't have sprouted out from the ground like that naturally."

It was her turn to get red.
"Okay, yeah. Maybe that was me but I'm as confused as you are. I have no idea how it happened. I don't even understand-" she said.

"Wait. Bushes... sprouted?" Lucy asked, looking at her friend.

"Yeah. When you left, I went to the back. So, Trevor showed up and..."
She glanced at me.

"I was leaving and I tripped. I fell and Trevor came to help me up. Then plants started to grow around my arms and-"

"Hold up guys," Alexis cut her off.

Alexa sighed and picked at her tray.

"So, um Maddison, you made plants sprout from the ground and Trevor your hands are starting to heat up spontaneously. There was this strange blue light that flashed on my arm yesterday. That same day, some crazy man, I dunno, used...magic? to control us and he can disappear and talk to people through his mind," Alexis rambled.

"...my shadow!" Lucy said, making us all jump.

"Sorry. Yesterday, before you guys walked into that room, the guy called me spirit of shadow. And, yesterday still, before I came to Davie's, it was evening and I could see different shadows around me including mine. I looked down at it and it suddenly started growing in size."

We all kept looking at her, waiting for what she'll say next.
Alexa stood up.

"I'm sorry guys, I just can't believe this. You're all acting crazy."

"If we're crazy Lex, explain what happened in that warehouse yesterday," Alexis said.

She paused, her eyes darting around as if searching for the answer on our faces.

"Probably imagination," she muttered finally.

"Yeah, Lex," Alexis started, his jaw clenching in obvious annoyance, "I'm pretty sure we all imagined everything that happened yesterday at the exact same time in the exact same way."

I couldn't blame her for the way she acted.
I wanted to believe it wasn't real too.
But you couldn't just act like something like that didn't happen.

I figured Alexa was the kind of person who wouldn't listen to others' opinions.
She was pragmatic and she wouldn't believe in your ideas unless you had a really plausible explanation or it happened to her personally.

Maybe, she needed it to happen more than once before she believed it.
Girls like her believe what they want to believe and they only listen to what they want to hear.

She walked away.

"Dude, what's up with your sister?" I asked.

He looked down at the table and I looked rounded at their faces.
"So what now?"
