Chapter 3~ Gruesome Murder
Lily's POV
"What?!" I shouted, making everyone in the restaurant stare at my uncle and I. "Lily..." Uncle Jack lowered his baseball cap and slipped the folder under the table. "Sorry...." I lowered my voice. "But you what?!" He glanced around us before tossing the folder onto the table, his eyes hardening. "This."
I took the folder and read it. "A guy by the name of James Gordon was working after hours in his office on Thursday night." Uncle Jack glanced around again before continuing. "His boss says he always did his work right, and had no real enemies at his job. When the CEO came to the building first thing in the morning, he found James at his desk.....dead. His eyes wide open. A knife in his chest. Another in the back of his neck."
I winced, and shuddered. "Do you have to tell me every single detail?" He cracked a smile. A smile I hadn't seen in a while. "I'm a police inspector, Lily. I live off of details." I chuckled a little. "Alright. So why did you tell me about this murder? This is the police's job."
He nodded. "It would be.....if not for the most gruesome part." I sighed. "Do I want to hear it?" He shrugged. "That's not the point. You will hear it. You need to." I rolled my eyes and flipped a page in the folder. My eyes widened. I stared at a photo of a middle aged man slumped in a chair. dried blood on his shirt. The fear in his unblinking eyes was evident.
"Lily?" Uncle Jack took the folder from my. "You ok?" I nodded. "Yes..." He put the folder in his briefcase and folded his hands on the table between us. "Back to what I was saying. The strangest thing, and most gruesome part was what we found on the man's neck."
I leaned forward a little, interested. "What did you find?" Uncle Jack's face wen ta pale colour. "The murderer carved into his neck....a picture of a strange symbol. It looked like the biohazardous symbol at first, but I noticed the top looked like the head of a snake...." (pic above)
I looked at him sideways. "Aaand....?" Uncle Jack's fist hit the table with a thud. "Lily! This could be the work of Viper!" I stood, pushing back my chair. I saw where this was going, and I didn't like it. "So get mom to help you. She's the directer. Not me. I don't want to be directer, and I don't want to help get into anymore mess that will but people I love in danger!"
I stormed out of the diner and too my car. How do they expect me to run a whole Force?! I am not really cut out for this! I pulled open the door of the car. A strong hand pulls my shoulder back.
"Lily, listen! I'm not sure if this is Viper or not. The Viper Emblem is different. But they may be tied in with this. I need your help in this case. Your mom is retiring and-" I held up my hand to stop him. "And she wants me to take over. Well, I'm not! I wan't nothing to do with this undercover agent, X Force, evil fighting life! I never signed up for Dylan to almost die and I never signed up for mom to ask me to give up everything just for a stupid role as directer!"
Uncle Jack stumbled back, surprised at my outburst. But I didn't care. I was done with it. I hopped into my car and drove off, heat rising in my chest and steam pouring out of my ears. I hated this problem that ate away at my life.
I dove and drove and drove till I reached Mark's house. I would have gone to Dylan's, but he was sick and needed to rest. I knocked only twice before the door was opened. Mrs. Livingston, a tall woman with flowing blonde hair stood in front of me. "Lily? Dear what's wrong?"
I hadn't even noticed I'd been crying. I wiped the salty tears from my face. "I-Is Mark home, Ma'am?" She nodded, ushering me in. "He's up in his room. I think he's doing homework." I nodded. "Thank you Mrs. Livingston." She smiled. "Please. Call me Jen."
I smiled a little. "Alright...Jen." I climbed up the stairs where I saw the door to Mark's room. I knocked. Nothing. "Mark?" I called. He didn't answer. I turned the door handle. It wasn't locked. I eased the door open. Mark wasn't in his room. I looked around. His room was a normal boys room. Video games near the HD tv, messy bed, and a couple DVD's on the desk.
The only thing missing was the boy. "Mark?" I looked around. "He'd better not be trying to scare me..." I thought, sitting on his bed. I then remembered. Mark had a bathroom in his room. I stood and walked to the door. I reached out for the handle.
Before I could touch it, the knob turned and the door swung open. I stood face to face with a sight much worse than Mark trying to scare me......
Ooooooo, what do you think she sees?! Enjoy this Chapter!
