Chapter 29 ~ What Hurts the Most

Start music at the *

Lily's POV.

Mark texted me the address to where he and Jay were hiding. I pulled up in the car mom and Uncle Jack had negotiated for. I looked up at the old apartment building. It looked like it was crumbling from top to bottom.

"Lily, are you sure your friends are here?" Mom asked, stepping out. I nodded. "This is the address Mark sent me."  Uncle Jack slammed his door shut and grabbed his rifle from the trunk. I slid the gun into my pocket and tossed mom a gun from under in the glove compartment.

We walked into the rusted, broken down building to the floor and room where Jay and Mark were. I pulled out my gun and motioned for mom and Uncle Jack to stay out of sight. I kicked the door open and was met with the barrel of a gun right between my eyes.

"Lily!" Mark pulled the gun away from my head. He breathed a sigh of relief. He looked at his watch and then at me. "We don't have much time until Marcus knows where we are and comes looking for us."

"How would he know where we are?" Mom asked, scratching the back of her neck. I groaned as it hit me. "There are hidden tracking chips in the back of your necks. Both of you." Uncle Jack felt the back of his neck.

Suddenly my phone rang. I took it out of my pocket and stared at the caller id.

"Unknown Number"

I hit answer and held it up to my ear. "Hello, Lily." The familiar voice made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, and a shiver creep down my spine. "Long time no see." I nearly dropped the phone.

"Y-You're supposed to be dead...." I choked out. His smooth, chuckle made my skin crawl. "That's what you thought, sweet heart. Uncle Marcus gave me a dose of the temporary serum. It was enough to heal me just in time.

I could see his 'perfect' smirk on the other end of the phone. I took a deep breath. "What do you want, Jayden?" He whistled as if pretending to think about what he wanted. "I want nothing from you." Come to the town square at 10:00 pm with The money and other things that were inside the trunk of the truck, you stole.

I narrowed my eyes. In that truck were illegal weapons, stolen cash, and other valuable items. I couldn't just give them up. Not just like that! Before I could refuse, Jayden spoke once more. "Bring me the truck, and your friends don't die. Well, the living two anyway. One of them is still lying in my uncle's office in a pool of blood.

My blood froze. Who had died? Was it Amber? Or Henry? Or.....Dylan...? I swallowed the large lump in my throat and set my jaw. One of my friends was dead, and someone was going to pay. "Deal." That single word sealed a deal of danger, signed a death sentence.

I pushed my phone in my pocket and left the building to go to the truck. "Lily?" Jay called after me, but I ignored him. I slammed the door and leaned against it. Marcus had captured the remaining two of my friends.

I turned and punched the brick wall with all my strength. I stayed there. My fist to the wall, blood oozing from newly made wounds, and my chest rising and falling in anticipation. I pulled my hand from the brick, glancing at the blood stained rock, and walking to the truck and opening the trunk.

I stared at the duffle bags of money and the piles of different weapons. Pistols, rifles, sniper rifles, and bags of electronic items. I counted the money and went through all the weapons and other stolen spoils.

I hopped out of the van and shut the trunk doors. I sighed and sat on the cold concrete ground, and inspected my bloody knuckle. It stung and made my whole hand throb. I huffed a groan under my breath and leaned my head back on the cold metallic surface of the truck.

I closed my eyes and sighed softly. I suddenly felt a presence beside me. "Lily?" I looked up into mom's bright blue eyes. She smiled sadly at me. "You ok?" She asked, putting her arm around my shoulder rubbing my shoulder firmly but motherly.

I took a shaky breath. "Jayden is alive, and the others....." The truth was eating away at my heart and mind. One of my best friends was dead.

DEAD.

"Lily? Honey?"

I choked back a sob and looked up at mom mother, who had worry in her eyes and I looked down immediately, feeling the tears escaping my eyes. "Oh, Lily...." Mom pulled me closer by my shoulder and kissed the top of my head.

"They are going to die...." I blurted out. "Who is?" I grit my teeth. "Houston killed one of the remaining three I left at the Viper compound. Henry, Amber, and Dylan. The two remaining...He's going to kill them..." I gripped my knee as I tried to take in the news.

What would I do if it was Dylan who was killed? I didn't think I could live if I knew my leaving him there.....killed him.

Mom squeezed my shoulder. "Lily, you have to stay strong. Houston and Jayden are using this against you to get you off your game. You need to stay focused, and stick to the plan. Not moving on anger and emotions alone." She removed her arm and pulled something from around her neck. It was Uncle Jack's dog tags he had given to her when she was just 15.

"Here." She put the tags around my neck. They were beaten up but had a new looking black silencer on them. "You're uncle gave them to me. He carried them through thick and thin. I did too. Though life and death situations. Through pain and suffering. Through deaths of friends, and family..."

I looked down at the tags and nodded a little. She patted my shoulder and stood. "If it is Dylan....." She added. I set my jaw, feeling a new fresh flood of tears on their way. "Know he more than likely did it for you." She smiled. "He loves you, sweetie. He'd do anything for you. You're lucky to have a guy like him." She walked back into the building and left me.

I rose to my feet and took a deep breath. I wasn't going to let Marcus Houston get to me. Nor was I going to let Jayden play with my feelings again. I walked back into the apartment with an armful of weapons and smoke bombs.

I dumped them on the ground and put on a straight face. They all looked up. There was some silence till Uncle Jack stood and walked up, picking up an LR-300 and inspected it. "So." He stood up, after placing the rifle back in the pile.

"What's the plan, captain?"

3rd Person's POV.

"Where is she, Jayden?!" Marcus shouted at the young man. "Relax, Uncle! I know Lily. She'll be here any second." Jayden Spark pulled his arm away from his Uncle's grip and shook his head in disbelief.

"She better, Jayden, or else you'll be the one paying her debt." Jayden looked back at the truck they had arrived in. A pair of eyes stared emotionlessly through the window. Jayden looked around at the hidden snipers and foot soldiers he and his uncle had set in place in welcome for Lily and her family.

'What fun this will be.'

He thought. Watching the girl that would have been his, die for refusing him.

'She rejected me! She chose that poor, country boy instead of me! How could she! Was she blind? She was obviously stupid. I was the perfect guy! No one could resist me!'

The night was nearing its peak and Marcus Houston was feeling doubtful. Something he barely felt. The girl was either not coming or she had something up her sleeve. This girl was a tricky one. And Marcus didn't like tricky ones.

The sound of an engine drew near. Marcus forgot his slight unease and smirked. The girl was right on time. Jayden stood next to him and smirked. "There she is." Lily hopped out of the driver seat and slammed the door shut.

"Where are your friends Lily." Marcus grinned. Lily tossed Jayden an "I hate you to hell and back" glare. "They stayed back to report to headquarters." Her glare at him indicated to him to be true. It made sense.

"You look good, Lily." Jayden stepped forward and lifted his hand to her face. Lily growled and whipped out a pistol from her belt and pressed it against his ribs.

"Try me." She uttered the words as a whisper. Jayden tilted his head and flashed her his perfect glistening white teeth. "Oh, I would love to, love."  Before Lily knew it, Jayden had a black titanium blade to her neck.

She glared daggers at her first love as he smirked like a true international playboy and slid the knife across her cheek lightly. Not enough to draw any blood, but enough to inflict a slight bit of pain.

Lily stayed emotionless and glaring at him. "Now, now children." Marcus pushed them apart slowly. "Where is my shipment, miss Hamato?" Marcus smirked. Lily pointed to the truck and several Viper henchmen rushed in and tugged at the doors. But to no avail.

Marcus turned his gaze to Lily, entertained. "What kind of game are you playing Lily?" Lily held up her hand, twirling the keys from her finger. "Hand them over." Jayden gripped his knife. "Not so fast, playboy." She turned her eyes from him to his uncle.

"Where are my friends?"

Marcus smirked as if he had been waiting for her to ask that so he could tell the joke of the century. "Jayden?" Jayden smirked and whistled. The doors of the van behind them swung open. Three people jumped out. Two Viper agents, and a girl.

"Amber!" Lily was glad to see her friend alive. She glared at the two men holding her, only to find one of them was all too familiar. "Dylan!" She ran at him, forgeting to think why he was holding Amber's arm tight captive. Or why he was wearing a viper encrested jacket. Or why his eyes never changed from no emotion. Or why he wasn't being held captive.

As Lily was about to throw her arms around him, Dylan turned, lifted his leg, and kicked her straight in the side. Lily flew back and crashed to the ground, coughing. She looked up in disbelief. She turned her head to see Marcus smirking at her. As was Jayden.

"Wh-what...." She looked back at her boyfriend. He glared at her with emotionless brown eyes. They used to to be innocent, doe eyes that were full of love and passion. Now they were dark, emotionless orbs that held nothing but hate, void, and a will to kill.

Realization hit Lily like a truck. Henry was dead. And Marcus had most likely injected Dylan with the final serum and turned him into an emotionless robot. Doing Marcus' bidding without a second thought.

Anger surged through Lily like a fire as a lighter hits a pool of gasoline. "What have you done to him?!" She turned and ran at Marcus reaching for her gun. Jayden reached out at lightning quick speed and sliced up her shoulder.

Lily yelped but elbowed Jayden in the throat and tackled Marcus Houston to the ground, throwing punch after punch to his face. Lily's tears mixing with the psychotic man's blood. "Dylan! Get her off me!" He shouted.

Lily screamed at him in rage and continued to throw blow after blow at him before Dylan ran over and grabbed her under her arms, and hurled her into the van. Lily collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath.

"It's bad to come alone you know dear." Marcus stood and brushed off his clothes. "what makes.....you think....I came alone.....?" Lily pushed herself up and smirked, blood running from her mouth.

Dylan ran up and landed a punch in her gut, making her shriek in pain and fall back down. Marcus growled. Taking a walkie talkie from an agent he shouted into it. "Snipers! shoot her down! now!!"

Nothing happened. Jayden looked up frantically. No snipers. He caught sight of something. One of the snipers being hit over the head and dragged around a corner on the roof. "We've been played!" He shouted.

The Viper agents went ballistic pulling out their guns and looking around. Amber took this chance to knock out her captor and run off, taking out others. "Look out!" A shout was heard, as a couple of canisters landed in our midst.

Lily's POV.

I smirked at Marcus and Jayden as they exploded and smoke enveloped us all. I ran to where I bumped into Uncle Jack. He kicked a Viper agent down some stairs, and grinned at me, seeing his old dog tags. "Good luck." He tossed he a desert eagle and ran at some other agents.

I grinned and ran to where I knew Mark, Mom and Jay were. I heard a loud scream and my heart fell. I ran to the beginning of the bridge and saw a sight I never thought I would see. Mom was taking on 3 or 4 henchmen while Mar dragged a wounded Jay around a car.

I pulled out the gun and shot all the men in their legs. I ran up to mom as the Viper Agents grabbed for their weapons after recovering. "Go!" She nodded to the car. "Help them!" She ran at the men full forced.

I ran to the car and slid behind it as a bullet pierced my thigh. I groaned and whacked my head against the car. "L-Lily?" I turned my head and saw Mark. His hair was a mess and there was blood on his red shirt, and a fresh wound on his abdomen, and his cheek.  His eyes held fear and guilt.

I looked down at Jay. Mark's hand pressed firmly against his chest where a bullet wound oozed blood. I blinked and looked into the young boy's eyes. They were full of pain, suffering and fear. "I-I don't want to die, Lily." He choked through tears......and blood.

I grabbed his hand, though mine were shaking. "Y-You're not going to die, Jay....I'm not letting you die..." His hand clasped mine for dear life. He spit up blood and his body spasmed as he tried to fight off the pain.

I pulled my jacket off and pressed it to his wound. "You're going o be ok, Jay...ok?" Jay whimpered. "Keep listening to my voice....don't take your eyes off mine....stay awake..." His eyes faded to close.

"No, Jay! Stay with me!" Blood, sweat, and tears slid down my face. The gash from where Dylan threw me made me light headed. Jay smiled a little and squeezed my hand weakly. "I-It's not you're fault, boss....." Mark's hand on Jay's wound shook, as did mine, holding his hand.

"Make sure, my sister...." He coughed. "J-Jay..." Mark tried to keep his voice straight. "Don't talk..." "No...." Jay looked at him than to me. "Make sure my sister knows I love her and that it wasn't your fault."

I choked back a sob as I felt his grip on my hand loosen. "Jay!" I shouted, my voice cracking.  "It was an honour serving you, cap...." He gave me a weak grin before his head fell to the side and his eyes closed, his hand dropping from mine.

"JAY!"

I grabbed his wrist feeling for a pulse. A beat. Anything that would give me proof he was alive! Nothing. I remember screaming his name. Calling for him to wake up. TO give me some indication that he was alive and well.

He gave none. Mark pulled me to himself. I gripped his shirt and sobbed into his strong chest. He rubbed my back, but his hands trembled as well. His arms held me tight. I could feel his tears hitting my head. Like a soft rain....

Then it began to rain.

It rained.

I pulled myself up and turned myself to where mom beat off the last of the agents. "Guys!?" She yelled. Mark stood as well. His eyes giving mom the clarification she needed. The sound of a car screeching made us look up, and mom behind her.

Marcus' van pulled up. The driver jumped out and ran at me, growling.

Dylan.

I growled back and we attacked each other. I don't remember how long the fight lasted, but I remember no one intervening. It must have been at least 20 minutes.

We both stood weakly. Panting. I had slices and other bruises around my body. I ached all over. I eyed Dylan cautiously. He turned and spat out blood on the ground. His hair stuck to his head as the rain pelted us, washing away some of the blood.

To my wounds, it felt like acid. I ran at him again, ducking his fist and pinning him to a pillar. "Dylan snap out of it! It's me! Lily! The one you love! Think of your mom! Think of me!!" My voice was hoarse from yelling at him over the thundering rain.

He shoved my off him and raised his knife above my and smirked. I looked at him in fear. Is this how it would end?

Dylan suddenly yelped in pain and dropped the knife as Uncle Jack's bullet hit home in his shoulder. His face contorted in pain and my heart fell at the sight of him in pain. "D-Dylan....."

"KILL HER DYLAN! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!"

Marcus was knocked out by mom. She beat the butt of her rifle to the back of his head. I looked back to Dylan who ran at me, fire in eyes and a complete brainwashed mind. I ducked and pushed him into the van. Jayden had already run off. The Coward.

I punched Dylan in the jaw and whacked him back into the truck again and again. My tears mixing with his blood and both our sweat. He kneed my int he stomach, making me back up. Mark pulled me behind him and shot at Dylan several times.

Dylan dodged and ducked. Each time he back away closer to the edge of the bridge. "No!" I screamed. Mark's last two bullets hit Dylan in his chest and shoulder. He took one more step, already weak from fighting, he lost balance and fell back falling into the dark, cold, river.

I rushed from behind Mark to the edge looking for any sign of him. But nothing. I heard sirens blaring and knew the authorities were here. They picked up Houston and shoved him into the prison bus.

"This is not over, Rodgers... Dylan is not dead. This fight is not over." Mom put her hands on my shoulders. The Viper agents had scattered. I hated them too. The police left and I turned.

Only to be met with Amber's fist. "He's dead because of you!" I stumbled back, still weak. "My brother is dead!" She raged, kneeing my in the ribs, where Dylan had already kicked me. I doubled over in pain, only to feel her elbows crash against my back.

I collapsed onto my stomach and lay there, motionless, while Amber beat the living daylights out of me. I covered my head with my arms as I grew weaker and weaker. Then I felt nothing, as Mark dragged Amber off of me. "Amber! Enough! She is suffering more than we are!" She wrenched her arm from his grip and glared at me one more time before storming out into the night.

I pushed myself onto my back and groaned. Uncle Jack and mom came to my aid. Uncle Jack picked me up as I lay weakened and limp. The fight was over. Dylan was gone. Jayden was scared off. And Marcus was arrested. It was all over........
