CHAPTER 62

"WHAT happened to dad?!" Cross' loud angry voice echoed in the hallway of the hospital upon arriving there. The two people who were there turned their heads towards their direction and Chloe saw right away from their faces that they weren't welcome there.

"Lower your voice down, will you?! No one is deaf here!" Beatrice answered full of displeasure and Cross' jaw flexed.

"I don't care! Just answer me! What happened to dad?! He was just doing fine a while ago and then suddenly, he's in the hospital?!"

"And what are you trying to imply? Are you trying to put the blame on mom and us?" Vito snapped at Cross angrily.

"Why? Did I step on a landmine?" Cross taunted and that angered Vito even more. Vito closed the gap between them like a raging bull that was about to attack his prey but Cross didn't even wince. They started into each other as if measuring each other's strength.

"Just pray that I wouldn't discover what really happened because I will never forgive anyone who hurt dad in any way."

"Damn you!" Vito's eyes squinted in so much anger and was about to punch Cross but Chloe managed to stop him by getting in between them.

"Can you at least respect your father even just for this moment?! He's in there, fighting for his life and yet, you both are thinking about your issues!"

"I'm not doing anything, Chloe. Tell that to your man." Vito glared at Cross one more time before turning his back on them and sat on one of the chairs in that hallway. Everyone finally became quiet as the minutes turned into hours.

She could tell that Cross wanted to know exactly what happened but chose to just remain quiet instead of having an argument with Beatrice and Vito.

"Are you okay? Do you want something to drink or eat?" She asked after she didn't know how long. He'd been convincing her for him to take her home so that she could rest but she refused to do so. She didn't want to leave him there together with Vito and his mother alone.

"I'm okay, cariño. You don't have to worry about me. What about you? Do you need anything?" He looked worried as he looked at her. He even gently caressed her tummy as if making sure if their baby was fine.

She was about to answer when someone suddenly butted in their conversation.

"If I were you, Chloe; I would get Cross out of here. I don't see the reason why he's here anyway. My husband's condition would surely worsen with that kind of attitude that he's pulling here." Beatrice, who has been pacing back and forth, said firmly before sitting next to her son.

Cross didn't answer right away but Chloe could feel the tension in his body as she held him by the wrist. He stood up with his hands balled into fists and Chloe followed him.

"Calm down. Getting angry will not help your father's condition. Just ignore her. Let's sit over there while waiting for the doctor." Chloe suggested, referring to the chairs farther from them, and pulled him by the hand. But he didn't move. She was about to say something to him when he finally spoke.

"As the first born of dad, I have every right to be here. I don't care about what you say. I will stay. But let me just tell you something. If I discovered that you two are the ones who have caused this to happen, I will make you pay." He threatened and seeing him like brought chills down her spine.

Cross looked dangerous and she knew that if he managed to find out if someone hurt his father, he would surely take his revenge, whoever it was.

"Cross!" She whisper-yelled, afraid that Vito would fly into a fit of rage and attack him.

"What did you just say?!" Vito stood up, triggered, and was about to march his way towards them when the doctor finally came out.

"Who is the family of the patient?" Beatrice was about to answer when Cross quickly approached the doctor and introduced himself.

"I'm his son. How's my father, doctor?" He was evidently more than worried.

"And I'm his wife, doctor." Beatrice interrupted, giving Cross a sharp glare, before looking back at the doctor again. The doctor looked at them quizzically. But he then cleared his throat before finally telling them what everyone wanted to know from him.

"I'm sorry. Even though the surgery went well, Mr. Larsen is in a state of coma."

"What?! What happened?! How come he's in coma?!" Cross snapped at the doctor. Chloe took his hand and intertwined their fingers together, trying her best to calm him down.

"Didn't anyone inform you about what happened? He suffered a major heart-attack. For now, he's not out of danger yet. All we could do is to hope and pray that he will wake up the soonest possible." Then, the doctor left.

Cross looked like all the strength within him disappeared and Chloe felt for him. Without saying anything, she wrapped her arms around him, silently comforting him. She thought, he would just be silent like that but she got surprised when he suddenly looked at Vito and Beatrice with blazing eyes.

"I'll ask you one more time. What happened at the party when I left? How come dad suffered a heart attack?"

"How would we know?! He was talking to his business associates when it happened!" Beatrice snapped at him. Vito scoffed.

"Look who's acting so innocently. What about you? Are you sure you didn't do something that could've caused this?"

"Don't throw stones at me, Vito. We both know that I've never brought any problems to dad. You're the one who never cared about causing him problems so if I discovered that you did something that could be the root cause of what happened to him, then you'll be sorry."

"Are you threatening me?" Vito asked with a dangerous tone but Cross didn't even bat an eye.

"Just make sure that you didn't do anything because I will find what happened." He then took her hand and pulled her out of there.

"Cross, you shouldn't point fingers at anyone like that. You don't have any evidence that Vito and his mom have done something that caused the heart attack of your father." She said when they were inside his car.

"I'm not just pointing fingers here. I know what those people are capable of and I will not even be surprise if they did something to him. Whatever happened, I will do anything in my power to find out." Chloe could tell that Cross was beyond livid for him to even listen to reasons so she just decided to not say anything and just comforted him the best way she could.

She wanted to ask why he seemed to be so suspicious about Vito and his mother but she didn't want to anger him even more as she noticed that the more they were talking about Vito and Beatrice, the angrier he got.

Even though she wanted to hear the explanation that she'd been asking from him, she figured out that today was no longer the proper time for it.

Cross just dropped her off her place and stayed for about an hour with her, made sure that she would be just fine, before taking off. He seemed brooding and didn't say much. That night, sleep was far from her because her mind was full of what happened that day.

For some reason, she was worried about Cross. She just hope that he wouldn't do something stupid.

CROSS chugged down the remaining content of the bottle he was holding like there was no tomorrow. He was in his favorite club, the TBG club, but his mind was wandering somewhere else. Since they left the hospital in the wee of the morning until he left Chloe's place, he hasn't had even a blink of sleep because he had to do more important things than that.

Some girls approached him to flirt with him but he just shooed them away without even giving them a second look. Why would he? He was sure that Chloe was lovelier and sexier than them anyway.

He just needs Chloe and no other woman.

He was about to open another bottle when someone spoke.

"I have the result." He looked at the envelope that he was holding before him and then took it.

"Why are you the one who delivered this, uncle? I thought, you wouldn't help me now because of mom?" He couldn't help but to voice out his resentment.

His uncle sighed. "I didn't say anything about not helping. I kept quiet because I didn't want to anger your mom. But now that you need help, I figured that I should step in and help." Cross looked at him, surprised.

Ever since he met them, his aunt and uncle never showed him anything that could've made him feel like an outsider. With them, he experienced how to have parents. A real family.

"Thank you, uncle. I appreciate it." He smiled and then tapped him by the shoulder.

"No need to thank me. You know that I will always be here for you. Even though you're not our biological son; for your mom and I, you are the son that we never had." Cross' heart filled with joy upon hearing that. For some reason, he suddenly felt emotional.

"I really thought, you were only putting up with me because you needed my help."

"That's nonsense. Yes, your mom had been wanting revenge but when she learned about your existence, she changed a lot, you know? Ever since your mother and your brother passed away, the old Clara disappeared too. I only got to have a glimpse of her old self whenever she's looking at you.

"The motherly love she had for your twin was the same as she has for you, so please don't ever question her love for you because she definitely loves you. Yes, she's strict and hard on you most of the time but that's her way of protecting you.

"Yes, her thirst for justice is still there but I'm sure that you're equally important, if not, more important because if she doesn't love you, she will never ask me to do something to help you right now." That surprised him.

"What? Mom asked you to help me?"

"You heard it right. She's the one who gave me the go signal. She didn't do anything until now because she respected your decision to do everything on your own without her meddling. Although, she had been pushing you to do what she thought was right, she never by passed you. She's trusts you that's why even though you've been distracted, she still chose to wait." His eyes watered. He'd been wanting to hear those things for years now and he really thought, it would be impossible. But that time finally came.

"Thank you, uncle. I really am."

His uncle nodded his head with a smile on his face. "Open the envelope." He did as he was told and read what was written on it.

Then, overwhelming rage surged within him. He stood up and was about to storm out of there when his uncle stopped him by the hand.

"I knew, this would be your first reaction. Sit down and calm down, will you? I know what you're planning to do but remember the first lesson that I've ever taught you. Never let your anger overcome your rational thinking because you will surely lose the battle." Upon hearing that, Cross slowly sat down.

His uncle was right. He needed to think clearly and wisely while playing this game that they started. It has been long overdue but now that he finally knew what happened in the past, it was his turn to do what he should've done long time ago.
