Chapter 90

The whole kitchen fell silent. Remus and Sirius were both staring back at Jenna in shock. Slowly, Sirius sunk down on the chair, his knees weakening after hearing Jenna's words.

"Wh-what?" Sirius whispered feebly, feeling his mouth go dry.

He then glanced sideways at Remus for a quick second, trying to see if he had known about this or not. But Remus seemed just as shocked as him, if not more.

"You were — you were pregnant?" Remus muttered, his brown eyes fixed on Jenna, who was still on her feet, glaring down at Sirius.

"But — when did we...? When were you...?" Sirius tried to ask, forgetting what he had been fighting about just a minute ago. His mind had gone blank.

"I guess it happened some while after I had returned from my mission," Jenna replied in a small voice as her eyes started to fill up with tears, though she kept her deadly glare on Sirius.

Sirius suddenly remembered that morning when he had made breakfast all those years back, and Jenna had thrown up. They had thought that it was just food poisoning, but now he realized how wrong he had been.

"But what — what happened to — what happened to the baby?" Sirius had gone as pale as a ghost. Every single emotion that he had been feeling, from anger and rage to jealousy, all had turned into agony and remorse.

"It was a few weeks after the night that Lily and James had died," Jenna said, feeling a sharp pain in her heart with each word that she spoke. "I was feeling nauseous for a long time, but then one night I... I started feeling pain in my stomach. I thought it was nothing at first, but it was growing worse and worse, until it became unbearable and — and I went to my neighbor — she was a middle-aged lady, and she took me to a Muggle hospital. And — and they told me..."

Her voice suddenly broke and she tore her eyes away from Sirius, throwing her gaze on the floor.

"They told me I had a miscarriage," she whispered.

Jenna's tears had started streaming down her face at this point. Sirius had fallen quiet, as if forgetting how to speak. Even Remus was left speechless.

"I had lost my brother and my best friend in the same night, and I thought that I had lost Harry too," Jenna went on. "And to top it all off, Dumbledore told me you were captured and sent to Azkaban for betraying Lily and James, and that I had to leave everything behind and run away. The grief was enough to crush anybody's soul."

Sirius couldn't get the words to leave his throat. All he could think about was that if he had stayed, if he hadn't left her alone and was there for her for comfort, then maybe, just maybe, things would've gone differently.

"Jenna, I'm... I'm so sorry," Sirius muttered weakly, his throat burning and his heart racing mercilessly.

"Well, sorry isn't really going to fix everything, is it?" Jenna said coldly, her eyes still on Sirius.

It was now Sirius's turn to avoid her gaze. He could still hear her words ringing through his ears. It all felt like a never-ending nightmare.

"Go ahead, then," she said, getting him to look up at her again. "Go ahead and tell me how easy I had it."

And then, before either Sirius or Remus could react, Jenna picked her wand and turned around, running out of the kitchen.

"Jenna, wait!" Sirius got to his feet in a quick motion, running after her. "Jenna!"

But it was too late. She had already left the house, slamming the door behind her and Disapparating away.

Sirius kept pacing around the living room, lost in his raging thoughts. He ran a hand through his black hair, trying to get his rapid breathing under control.

"I screwed up... I screwed up, like I always do..." he mumbled under his breath, quickening his pace around the dim room. "This is my fault... all my fault..."

Remus, who was standing nearby, was just about to open his mouth and reply, but Sirius cut him off and said,

"And don't you try to tell me otherwise, Remus!" said Sirius, still too angry at himself for everything.

"I wasn't going to." Remus shook his head earnestly. "I do think that you went too far with the fight. And I do believe that you shouldn't have left her in that state fourteen years ago to go after Pettigrew. But you blaming yourself right now isn't going to fix anything, Sirius."

"Then what will!?" Sirius retorted, frowning. "Tell me, Remus! How can I undo what has been done!? How can I change what I have done!? Because I can't!"

Remus fell silent, watching Sirius with concern.

"You know what I can't stop thinking about?" Sirius started, speaking in a low voice. "The night that Lily and James died... Jenna was there. At the Godric's Hollow. And I was with her. We were standing right outside their house. It was pouring rain. I can still remember it like it was yesterday... she was crying her eyes out. She begged me not to leave her like that. But you know what I did?"

Remus didn't reply. He just kept on looking at Sirius, having no idea what he was supposed to say to make things better.

"I left her, Remus," Sirius went on. "I left her, even though her brother and best friend had just died. I left for that filthy and worthless rat! I promised her that I would go back to her, but I didn't! And I can't stop thinking about how she was pregnant at the time!"

Remus started to walk forward to try and comfort him, but instead, Sirius turned away from him and went toward the cupboard nearby, taking out a bottle of Fire Whiskey and a glass.

Hoping that the alcohol in his system would take away the edge, he poured himself a glass and took a large sip. But then he just slammed the glass back in the cupboard angrily, starting to pace around again.

"What if I hadn't left?" Sirius muttered, speaking mostly to himself. "If I hadn't left — if she had someone for comfort — then maybe nothing would've happened to the baby. Maybe we would've raised that child together, and had a family, the way we always wanted. The kid would've been around thirteen by now..."

"Sirius," Remus started firmly, trying to get him back to his senses, "this isn't going to solve any problem!"

"Then what will!?" Sirius asked sharply, fuming from anger.

"Talking to her," Remus said more calmly.

"In case you haven't noticed, Remus, she ran out of the house!" Sirius retorted. "And I wouldn't blame her if she never wants to see me again!"

"That's not true." He shook his head lightly. "She needs you, Sirius. Now more than ever. She will come back, and when she does, just try to be there for her and comfort her. You can make things right."

"What if she doesn't want me near her anymore?" Sirius whispered.

"She will," said Remus, smiling sadly. "She loves you too much. And so do you."

Sirius then came to a stop, gazing down as his mind wandered off. The eerie silence was reigning the grim walls of the living room as the men fell quiet.

"You're right," Sirius muttered under his breath after long seconds, "I have to make things right."

Sirius suddenly shook his head, snapping out of his thoughts. And then, without a single word of explanation, he took his wand out of his pocket and made a run toward the house's entrance door.

"Sirius!" Remus called after him, frowning in confusion. "Where the hell do you think you're going!?"

"I'm going after Jenna," said Sirius, opening the house's door as he threw one last glance at Remus. "I know where I can find her."
