Chapter 193
Jenna's eyes fell again upon the body that Hagrid was carrying. She could see Harry, with his messy jet-black hair and broken glasses, remaining in Hagrid's arms without moving. It was as though all her nightmares had come to life at once, shattering her world down.
"NO! HARRY! NO!" Jenna screamed, making a run forward, but Sirius was quick to hold her back.
"Jenna —"
"Let go of me, Sirius! LET ME GO!" She started crying, the pain in her heart growing unbearable.
In that split moment, all she could see was James; laying on his back at the bottom of the staircase, his lifeless eyes open behind his lopsided glasses, staring up at the ceiling. She had kneeled down beside him, shaking her brother as if he would wake up. As if he wasn't truly gone. As if he hadn't left without a simple goodbye.
But now, she had lost Harry too. Somehow, it was even more painful, because she had so much less to lose this time.
Or perhaps it was because she had promised Lily that she would take care of him. Those were Lily's last words to Jenna. To look after Harry. She could remember it too vividly.
"Look, Jen..." Lily stopped Jenna as she was about to leave their house at Godric's Hollow. Her illuminating green eyes were filled with tears. "If anything happens to us... you will take care of Harry, right?"
Jenna glanced back at her, the color draining from her face. "Don't talk like that, Lil. Nothing's going to happen —"
"But just say it did happen," Lily cut her off, "look after Harry. Please..."
Jenna didn't know what to say to that, but she could hear the desperation in her friend's voice.
So she just moved forward and brought Lily to yet another embrace as she whispered, "I will."
If only she knew this was going to be the last time she was seeing her, she would've held on to that hug longer. If she knew, she would've told her brother how much she loved him.
Jenna had failed her. She had failed James. Harry was gone.
Many gasped and a few screamed his name, including Ron, Hermione, and Ginny. But Jenna's yells were the worse, the sorrow piercing through her soul like a trigger.
"SILENCE!" Voldemort cried out, causing everyone to go quiet. Bellatrix gave a shriek of laughter, feeling triumphant at everybody's demise.
Voldemort laughed. "It is over. From this day forth, you put your faith in me."
No one said anything. Nobody even moved.
"You see?" said Voldemort. "Harry Potter is dead! Do you understand now, deluded ones? He was nothing, ever, but a boy who relied on others to sacrifice themselves for him! And now is the time to declare yourself! Come forward and join us... or die."
The only sound that could be heard was Jenna's loud cries as she struggled to break free from Sirius desperately, who looked in misery himself, his eyes red.
But then everyone took aback as Neville limped forward, the dusty sorting hat in his hand, which he had taken off from the ground.
"And who is this?" Voldemort said in his soft snake's hiss. "Who has volunteered to demonstrate what happens to those who continue to fight when the battle is lost?"
Bellatrix gave a delighted laugh. "It is Neville Longbottom, my Lord! The boy who has been giving the Carrows so much trouble! The son of the Aurors, remember?"
"Ah, yes, I remember," said Voldemort, looking down at Neville, who was struggling back to his feet, unarmed and unprotected. "But you are a pureblood, aren't you, my brave boy?"
"So what if I am?" said Neville loudly.
"You show spirit and bravery, and you come of noble stock. You will make a very valuable Death Eater. We need your kind, Neville Longbottom —"
"I want to say something!" Neville broke him off fiercely.
"Very well," said Voldemort, and there was more danger in the silkiness of his voice than in the most powerful curse.
"It doesn't matter that Harry's gone. People die everyday. Friends, family..." He threw down his gaze. "Yeah... we lost Harry tonight. But he's still with us. In here." He pointed at his heart.
Jenna let out a sob. She had now turned around to lay her face against Sirius's chest as she cried her eyes out, clutching at his dusty coat so she wouldn't collapse. But he was only staring forward without blinking as he held her in his arms, too in shock to even shed tears. She could feel his whole body shaking.
"He didn't die in vain!" Neville went on, speaking more loudly this time as he looked back at Voldemort with rage in his eyes. "But you will! Because you're wrong! Harry's heart beat deep for us! For all of us! It's not over!"
Everything happened fast. The next moment, Harry jumped out of Hagrid's arms and at the same time, in one swift, fluid motion, Neville drew out the sword of Gryffindor out of the sorting hat.
The slash of the silver blade could not be heard over the roar of the oncoming crowd or the sounds of the clashing giants or of the stampeding centaurs, and yet it seemed to draw every eye.
Neville ran forward and with a single stroke he sliced off the great snake's head. Voldemort's mouth was open in a scream of fury that nobody could hear over the sound of others' shrieks. Chaos reigned as many Death Eaters ran forward and they backed into the Great Hall, their wands raised to fight back.
Sirius and Jenna fell apart to go different directions, dueling the Death Eaters who had entered the Hall. Now, there were even more people storming up the front steps, overtaking a duel.
Almost all of the families and friends of the students who had stayed behind to fight had now joined the battle, or even the people from Hogsmeade. The centaurs then burst into the hall with a great clatter of hooves, as behind them the door that led to the kitchens was blasted off its hinges.
The house-elves of Hogwarts swarmed into the entrance hall, screaming and waving carving knives and cleavers. And among them, Jenna could see Mickey.
"Fight! Fight! Fight for my Master, defender of house-elves! Fight the Dark Lord, in the name of brave Regulus! Fight!" Kreacher chanted. He was in their lead, with the locket of Regulus Black bouncing on his chest.
Jenna then saw Hermione who was fighting off a Death Eater, and so she rushed forward to help her. Hermione used the defensive spells against the man and at the same time Jenna attempted to attack him with numerous curses and hexes.
Once she finally managed to Stun him, she sent Hermione a knowing smile and the girl nodded at her once in appreciation before they ran toward different directions to help the others. It wasn't until that point that Jenna realized how much she had grown up since the first time she had seen the thirteen-year-old girl wit wheezy hair in Diagon Alley.
But Jenna suddenly turned as she heard a familiar voice behind her, calling after her.
"Fancy seeing you here, Potter." Jenna turned abruptly, her heart dropping once she saw Avery standing behind her.
She raised her wand quickly, though her hand was slightly trembling in fury.
"Woah, woah," Avery smirked, his wand pointed at her as well, "is that how you treat an old friend?"
Jenna didn't reply. There was chaos all around them, but her eyes were fixed on him as she gritted her teeth together. Although she then saw Avery's smirk widen as his gaze fell down on her baby bump, and her whole body froze in fear.
"Well, well, well," he sneered, "look what we have here!"
Jenna swished her wand and threw a curse at him, but Avery blocked it with ease.
"You Confunded me, Potter," Avery went on calmly. "All those years ago, when you were under cover. The effect of the spell took time to wear off, but now I remember what you did to me... You really shouldn't have done that. You made a mistake to attack me that night."
"You were trying to blackmail me, you piece of scum!" Jenna snarled, breathing heavily. "You wanted to have your way with me, in exchange for your silence!"
"Now, now. Would that have been too bad?" Avery sniggered, but his smirk dropped when Jenna threw another spell at him, which this time took more effort for him to block.
By doing this, she saw the mockery leave his face, instead anger and rage taking over his expression as his eyes darkened.
"You really shouldn't have come here tonight," he snarled. "And what would your precious Sirius Black say, if I kill you? What would he do, if I get rid of you and your baby?"
Jenna's hair suddenly turned white at those words, and she hated giving him the satisfaction of showing fear. But the next moment, she held up her wand fiercely and so did Avery, attacking each other at the same time.
The last thing Jenna saw at that moment was a flash of green light.
