Chapter 171

Sirius had killed one of the Death Eaters. But before he could finish off the next one he was battling, the Death Eater made a run for it and escaped with the others. Sirius thought he had even seen Bellatrix among them. He wanted her dead as much as she wanted to kill him, but it was too late. They were gone.

After a few moments of standing on the spot to catch his breath, the thought of the battle cleared away from his mind, and immediately he thought of Jenna. He didn't even allow himself for a second to think that she was hurt.

With that, Sirius set off to search for Jenna through the dark grounds. The oak front doors of Hogwarts stood open ahead of him, light flooding out onto the drive and the lawn. Hesitantly, everyone was creeping down the steps, looking around nervously for some sign of the Death Eaters who had fled into the night.

That was when Sirius's eyes caught sight of a mass of people, gathered at the ground at the foot of the tallest tower. Someone was laying there on the grass. For a quick moment, the horrible vision of Jenna's dead body flashed through Sirius's mind, but he tried shaking it away.

Feeling the aches and pains in his face and his legs where the various hexes of the last half hour had hit him, Sirius still moved forward and walked past the murmuring crowd to see what was going on. But his whole body froze when he saw Dumbledore in the middle of the crowd, laying on the ground motionlessly, his blue eyes closed, never to open again.

Hagrid was sobbing loudly, and Harry had crouched down beside Dumbledore's body. Sirius felt the breath leave his lungs, as though he had forgotten how to breathe for a second. He couldn't believe his eyes.

It was Ginny who finally came forward and kneeled beside Harry, throwing a comforting arm around him. She too looked shocked and pale after the battle.

"C'mere, Harry..." said Hagrid through his sobs.

"No." Harry let out a sob.

"Yeh can' stay here, Harry... Come on, now..."

"No." He did not want to leave Dumbledore's side, he did not want to move anywhere. Hagrid's hand on his shoulder was trembling.

"Harry, come on," Ginny whispered softly, pulling him upward. "We're going to the hospital wing."

    "I'm not hurt," said Harry.

"It's McGonagall's orders," said Ginny. "Everyone's up there, Ron and Hermione and Lupin and everyone —"

That was when Sirius snapped back to reality. He quickly turned to face Ginny, stopping them from walking away.

"Is there another woman in the hospital?" he asked urgently. "Blue hair — actually, no, brown hair. Hazel eyes. I-is she at the hospital wing?"

Ginny felt pity as he looked into his anxious eyes, shaking her head. "I'm sorry... I didn't see anybody else up there."

Panic gushed over Sirius's body. Without another word, he left their side, trying to find Jenna. All he could think about was the image of her being dead.

She's not dead, he kept repeating to himself as he ran around the grounds like a mad-man. She can't be...

But all his fears appeared right before his eyes when the next moment, from afar, he saw a woman laying on the dusty ground, blood dripping down her head.

    "JENNA!" Sirius bellowed, running forward.

He dropped himself down on the ground beside her, his eyes wide with horror.

"No... Jenna... Jenna!" he kept calling her, as though hoping for an answer. But her hazel eyes remained closed. He felt sick as though his heart was beating its way out of his chest. With a shaky hand, he reached out to take her pulse. She was barely breathing. Her heartbeat had slowed down.

His mind was too messed up and terrified that Sirius didn't even think about using magic. He just got Jenna up in his arms, running toward the castle and up the stairs.

"Stay with me... stay with me, Jenna..." he kept whispering between heavy breaths while he carried her all the way up to the hospital wing, as though she could hear him. "I won't let you die on me... not like this..."

Sirius finally burst through the hospital wing's doors, sweat dripping down his forehead.

"Quickly! Someone help me!" Sirius shouted desperately, laying Jenna's body down on one of the empty beds.

Remus and Harry both hurried forward after Madam Pomfrey, the color draining from their faces as everyone's eyes fell upon the Jenna's unconscious state.

"I — I think she's lost a lot of blood," said Sirius in a stutter, his eyes wide with fear while he watched Madam Pomfrey attend to her.

"How's she?" Harry asked Madam Pomfrey anxiously, seeing as Sirius and Remus looked too horrified to speak.

After some while, Madam Pomfrey finally looked up. "It's okay. She's only unconscious. Must've hit her head hard. But she'll be all right."

"Y-you sure?" Sirius whispered fearfully, his gaze still on Jenna.

"Of course. She'll be up soon." Madam Pomfrey nodded reassuringly, moving her wand and healing the wounds on her.

"And Dumbledore..." said Arthur, who had arrived at Hogwarts after the Order had called them all to visit Bill. He wasn't in a good state either, his face wounded. "Minerva, is it true... Is he really...?"

     Professor McGonagall slowly nodded.

"Dumbledore gone," Arthur whispered in disbelief, but Sirius didn't even raise his head, his eyes fixed on Jenna as he caressed her brown hair softly, placing a strand behind her ear.

Molly too had eyes only for her eldest son; she began to sob, tears falling onto Bill's mutilated face.

"Of course, it doesn't matter how he looks..." Molly mumbled. "It's not r-really important... but he was a very handsome little b-boy... always very handsome... and he was g-going to be married!"

"And what do you mean by zat?" said Fleur suddenly and loudly. "What do you mean, ' 'e was going to be married?' "

Molly raised her tear-stained face, looking startled. "Well — only that —"

"You theenk Bill will not wish to marry me anymore?" demanded Fleur. "You theenk, because of these bites, 'e will not love me?"

     "No, that's not what I —"

"Because 'e will!" said Fleur, drawing herself up to her full height and throwing back her long silver hair. "It would take more zan a werewolf to stop Bill loving me!"

"Well, yes, I'm sure," said Molly, "but I thought perhaps — given how — how he —"

"You thought I would not weesh to marry him? Or per'aps, you hoped?" said Fleur, her nostrils flaring. "What do I care how 'e looks? I am good-looking enough for both of us, I theenk! All these scars show is zat my husband is brave! And I shall do zat!" she added fiercely, pushing Mrs. Weasley aside and snatching the ointment from her.

At the sound of the loud noises, Jenna felt herself slowly coming back to consciousness after Madam Pomfrey's healing charms. But she was yet too weak to move a finger or to open her eyes.

Molly fell back against her husband and watched Fleur mopping up Bill's wounds curiously. Nobody said anything.

"Our Great-Auntie Muriel," said Molly after a long pause, "has a very beautiful tiara — goblin-made — which I am sure I could persuade her to lend you for the wedding. She is very fond of Bill, you know, and it would look lovely with your hair."

"Thank you," said Fleur stiffly. "I am sure zat will be lovely."

And then, no one quite saw how it happened, but the next moment both women were crying and hugging each other.

"You see!" Tonks suddenly said, glaring at Remus. "She still wants to marry him, even though he's been bitten! She doesn't care!"

All eyes turned toward them. Jenna slowly blinked, trying to see what was going on.

"It's different," said Remus, barely moving his lips and looking suddenly tense. "Bill will not be a full werewolf. The cases are completely —"

"But I don't care either, I don't care!" said Tonks, seizing the front of Remus's robes and shaking them. "I've told you a million times...."

"And I've told you a million times," said Remus, refusing to meet her eyes, staring at the floor, "that I am too old for you, too poor... too dangerous... OUCH!"

At those words, despite the ache in her body, Jenna had reached out for a bottle on the nightstand beside her bed, throwing it at Remus's head, hitting him hard.

Remus suddenly winced in pain, turning around to glare at her. "What was that for!?"

"For being a coward! I should've done that when we were fifteen!" said Jenna in an angry voice. "Just man up and kiss her, you git!"

The relief that washed over Sirius was beyond words could express. So he just laughed happily as Jenna sat up straight and leaned against the bed's headboard. He then caught everyone off guard when he suddenly leaned forward and grasped Jenna face in his hands, bringing her into a deep kiss.

"Oh, no you don't!" Madam Pomfrey suddenly said sharply, yanking the back of Sirius's coat and pulling him away from her. "She has to rest! She doesn't need you groping her with your mouth!"

Jenna chuckled and Sirius smirked, still happy to see that she was feeling all right.

"I've said all along that you're taking a ridiculous line on this, Remus," said Molly over Fleur's shoulder as she patted her on the back.

"I am not being ridiculous," said Remus steadily, sounding uncomfortable that the conversation had turned on him once again. "Tonks deserves somebody young and whole."

"But she wants you," said Arthur with a small smile.

"This is... not the moment to discuss it," said Remus, avoiding everybody's eyes as he looked around distractedly. "Dumbledore is dead..."

"Dumbledore would have been happier than anybody to think that there was a little more love in the world," said McGonagall, smiling.
