Chapter 139
It was as though time had frozen. Jenna felt paralyzed, unable to move, unable to scream, unable to breathe. In a flash of a light, Sirius was thrown across the room and laid there unconsciously.
"NO! SIRIUS!" Harry yelled, running toward his motionless body as Jenna stood there, frozen on the spot. Her whole body went numb.
"Sirius... no..." Harry panted, trying to shake him furiously.
"Harry, stop..." Remus ran forward and pulled Harry back as he cried. "Stop..."
Remus felt as though his own heart had suddenly stopped beating. He had heard Bellatrix's curse. He felt like he was stuck in his worst nightmare, with no way out.
"NO!" Harry yelled, but when he caught sight of Bellatrix shrieking with laughter and running away, he jerked free from Remus's grasp and ran out after her, his wand raised.
Jenna couldn't move. She felt as though her soul had crushed, torn into a million pieces. She wanted to scream, but she couldn't. She wanted to cry, but she felt as though she had already died. But death would've been mercy. Death would've been easier than this internal pain, burning her every nerve and torturing her every cell, as though someone had set her on fire.
Jenna had lost almost everyone she loved and cared for. But Sirius was her life. He was the one keeping her sane and going. And if he was truly gone, she had no reason left for breathing.
Just then, among this madness and chaos, Dumbledore glanced back at Lexi, who was holding Tonks's wand in her hand in a far corner, going unnoticed by everyone. But Dumbledore's head then jerked towards where Harry and Bellatrix had left just a minute ago, and so he ran out after them.
The next moment, Lexi fell to the ground and her eyes closed, the wand falling out of her hands. Kingsley rushed toward the girl, trying to help her.
Although neither Jenna nor Remus had noticed any of this, for their eyes were only fixed upon Sirius. Remus's knees gave in and he kneeled down on the floor beside where Sirius laid, staring at him in shock and horror. Every bone in his body was trembling, tears filling his eyes.
Jenna's empty gaze was still fixed on Sirius's motionless body. She moved forward, dragging her numb feet on the ground, feeling as though her own heart had stopped beating and her lungs had stopped working.
"Sirius..." Jenna whispered, falling to her knees beside Remus. Her whole body froze. Her hair started changing color first, and then her face followed as she transformed back to her original self without being able to control it.
"Jenna... I — I'm so sorry..." Remus whispered, the tears rolling down his eyes. But it was as if she couldn't even hear him.
"No... this can't be happening..." Jenna shook her head furiously, her throat burning. She clutched onto her stomach, the pain becoming unbearable. "NO!" she screamed, tears streaming down her cheeks.
As she looked down at him, her whole life flashed before her eyes in a matter of seconds; from the moment she had met him on the train to Hogwarts, to their first kiss, the night he proposed, and to the rainy night he had left fifteen years ago. She remembered the way he always wanted to have a family, because he never had a real one for his own. He wanted that life with her. He wanted to marry her. To have kids. But now... he was gone, and he had taken all those dreams with him.
"No... y-you can't leave me like this..." Jenna whispered, her eyes burning with the tears as she dropped herself forward and laid her head down on his chest, feeling that the pain and the ache in her heart was going to haunt her forever. "Y-you can't... you promised... you can't d-do this to m-m-me... you promised..."
"Jenna, please..." Remus whispered as he placed a hand on her shoulder, trying to get her to move, afraid that if anyone from the Ministry showed up, they would capture her. Although he felt too weak himself to do anything but to shed tears.
No matter what Remus said, Jenna didn't move. She cried her eyes out against Sirius's chest, knowing that he would never be there to hold her at nights. Knowing that he was gone forever.
But just then, as her head was still on his chest, Jenna came to a halt and her crying came to a sudden stop when she heard something.
It was the sound of his heartbeat.
With her eyes widened, Jenna raised her head up, looking down at Sirius, only to see that his chest was heaving up and down lightly. He was still breathing.
"He's — he's not —" Jenna started mumbling under her breath like a madwoman, though her tears still hadn't ceased falling.
Remus saw it too. He blinked a few times, thinking that he had just been imaging things. But when he paid a closer attention, he realized as well that Sirius was breathing softly, in and out.
Without thinking twice about what he was doing, Remus immediately pointed his wand down at Sirius, saying, "Rennervate!"
On cue, Sirius shot awake, gasping for air as he looked around with wide eyes. He placed a hand over his heart, panting.
But he became even more confused when he saw Remus and Jenna sitting on the ground beside him, both faces covered in tears. Although before he could open his mouth to speak, Jenna sprang forward and crashed her lips against his.
Remus let out a shaky breath, getting up to his feet. His best friend was alive, and that was all that mattered.
Remus then glanced around in confusion, having no idea what had happened. He was sure he had heard Bellatrix use the killing curse. He had seen Sirius being thrown away. But he didn't know the whole reality.
The truth was, Bellatrix's curse had missed Sirius by inches, seeing as someone had Stunned Sirius just a moment prior to that, throwing him out of the way. Someone had saved his life.
Jenna pulled away from the kiss so they could both catch their breath. She smiled through her tears and started laughing out of relief, caressing his cheeks as she had placed her hands on either side of Sirius's face.
"You're okay..." she said, laughing uncontrollably, though her tears were still streaming down her cheeks. But they were now tears of joy and happiness.
"Well, of course," Sirius grinned weakly, leaning forward to peck her one more time on the lips, "I promised I wouldn't leave you again, didn't I?"
Jenna kept on laughing, leaning in to bring him into a tight hug as the both sat on the ground, holding each other for dear life.
Kingsley and Moody had already left the department to get the injured ones to the hospital. Remus and Jenna were the only ones left.
"Wait," Sirius started after a long pause, suddenly pulling back, "where is Harry? What about the others?"
"Dumbledore's gone after Harry," Jenna explained. "Kingsley and Moody are tending to the others. They've all been injured."
"Where —?" Sirius was saying, but they all turned around when many rushed footsteps entered the enormous room.
Looking above them, they saw a dozen Aurors and Ministry officials rushing down the stairs, led by Cornelius Fudge himself.
"There!" Fudge cried out, pointing at the Death Eaters who were hovering in midair as though tight together by invisible strings. "Just like Dumbledore said! Capture them all!"
The aurors raised their wands, and mayhem fell upon the large room. But Jenna's eyes widened in horror when one of the Aurors suddenly sighted Sirius, laying on the ground.
"Merlin! It's him! Sirius Black!" he yelled.
There were sounds of yelps as the Aurors turned around and raised their wands, pointing them at his direction.
Remus and Jenna both got to their feet and drew out their wands, though Sirius remained on the ground, too weak to move after the Stunning spell had hit him.
"Step out of the way!" Fudge snapped, raising his wand as well.
"You'll have to kill me first," Jenna snarled, glaring back at them fiercely.
"And who are you?" Fudge said sharply.
Gritting her teeth together, Jenna's hair turned a dark shade of red. "You get any closer to him, and I'll become your worst nightmare."
Horror hitting them, the Aurors raised their wands even higher out of fear. Jenna was in her own true form, but none of the Ministry officials had recognized her. Though they couldn't deny that she looked highly familiar. But all that they cared about was Sirius Black, who was the most wanted wizard at the Ministry until this very moment.
But before they could attack, Dumbledore stepped into the room the next moment. "Let them go, Cornelius! They're innocent."
Fudge looked back, though he didn't put away his wand. He seemed out of breath, too much in shock. "I — but — Dumbledore —"
"You doubted me once, and you saw what happened," Dumbledore said firmly. "Release them at once. Sirius Black is innocent."
