Chapter 12

***

Jenna tried to take a closer look at the man; though he seemed pretty young, his light brown hair had turned grey in many places.

She couldn't believe her eyes... after all this time, he was here...

"How d'you know that?" Ron asked Hermione, eyeing the man.

"It's on his case," Hermione replied, pointing at the luggage rack
over the his head.

"Wonder what he teaches?" said Ron, frowning at Professor Lupin's pallid profile.

"That's obvious," whispered Hermione. "There's only one vacancy, isn't there? Defense Against the Dark Arts."

"Well, I hope he's up to it," said Ron doubtfully. "He looks like one good hex would finish him off, doesn't he? Anyway..." He turned to Harry. "What were you going to tell us?"

With that, Jenna had to turn her attention back to Harry, who started talking about how he had overheard Ron's  parents argue about Sirius Black.

She wanted to turn back to her human form on the spot and to talk Harry out of it. To tell him that Sirius was innocent. To tell him how much he cared for Harry. But she couldn't.

"Sirius Black escaped to come after you?" Hermione started after he was done. "Oh, Harry... you'll have to be really, really careful. Don't go looking for trouble, Harry —"

"I don't go looking for trouble," said Harry, nettled. "Trouble usually finds me."

Jenna's heart suddenly fluttered. Lily had used the exact same words once. To which Marlene had replied, "Is 'trouble' the new nickname you use for the immature arrogant toe-rag?"

"How thick would Harry have to be, to go looking for a nutter who wants to kill him?" said Ron shakily. "No one knows how he got out of Azkaban. No one's ever done it before. And he was a top-security prisoner too."

"But they'll catch him, won't they?" said Hermione earnestly. "I mean, they've got all the Muggles looking out for him too..."

She then started fumbling with the straps of Crookshanks's basket as she spoke.

"Don't let that thing out!" Ron said, but too late; Jenna leapt lightly from the basket, stretched and yawned to act natural, and then sprang onto Ron's knees; the lump in Ron's pocket trembled and he shoved Crookshanks angrily away.

      "Get out of here!"

"Ron, don't!" said Hermione angrily, but Ron had already raised his hand and pushed Crookshanks off his knees and Jenna dropped to the ground with a loud thud.

Jenna had never wanted to slap someone this much in her life as she grumpily settled in an empty seat, her yellow eyes on Ron's top pocket, where she knew the traitor laid at ease.

The train rattled, the rain hammered, and the wind roared as night finally fell upon the sky as they went on, on their way to Hogwarts.

"We must be nearly there," said Ron, leaning forward to look past the window.

The words had hardly left him when the train started to slow down.

"Great," said Ron, getting up and walking carefully past Professor Lupin to try and see outside. "I'm starving. I want to get to the feast..."

"We can't be there yet," said Hermione, checking her watch.

By that, the train suddenly came to a stop with a jolt. Then, without warning, all the lamps went out and they were plunged into total darkness.

"What's going on?" said Ron's voice from behind Harry.

"Ouch!" Hermione gasped. "Ron, that was my foot!"

"D'you think we've broken down?"

"Dunno..."

"There's something moving out there," Ron said. "I think people are coming aboard..."

Crookshanks got up worriedly, her eyes fixed on Harry protectively. She watched him carefully, growing slightly worried.

The compartment door suddenly opened and someone fell painfully over Harry's legs.

"Sorry — d'you know what's going on? — Ouch — sorry —"

"Hullo, Neville," said Harry, feeling around in the dark and pulling Neville up by his cloak.

Neville... Jenna's head snapped up at the name. It couldn't have been a coincidence. How many Nevilles were there, the same age as Harry?

Jenna's stomach lurched as she tried to have a look at the boy, but it was too dark. She couldn't believe it. It was Alice's son, standing right before her. Which made her wonder about her old friend, having no idea where she was now.

"Harry? Is that you? What's happening?" said Neville.

"No idea — sit down —"

Jenna suddenly hissed loudly as the new boy sat down on her tail and so she quickly moved out of the way.

"I'm going to go and ask the driver what's going on," came Hermione's voice. They heard the door slide open again, and then a thud and two loud squeals of pain.

"Who's that?"

"Who's that?"

"Ginny?"

"Hermione?"

"What are you doing?"

"I was looking for Ron —"

"Come in and sit down —"

"Not here!" said Harry hurriedly. "I'm here!"

"Ouch!" said Neville.

"Quiet!" said a hoarse voice suddenly.

Jenna knew that voice perfectly. She couldn't count all the times she bad heard it. Although she had hardly ever heard it being so stern.

The new Professor appeared to have woken up at last.

But Jenna's attention was the caught as a shivering cold filled the place and then slowly, the compartment door slid open.

Standing in the doorway was a cloaked figure that towered to the ceiling, its face was completely hidden beneath its hood.

An intense cold swept over them all. Jenna felt the cold pierce to her skin, and then into her heart. She started panting as she curled up to a corner, her mind going dizzy as she felt herself been dragged into herself.

She then started hearing her own yells. She was screaming. She was shaking someone, trying to get him to wake up, even though she knew there was no point. Even though she knew he was gone forever.

But as Jenna saw Harry fall down from his seat and collapse, she did almost everything in her power to block her mind on the Dementor and to snap out of her haunting and horrifying memories. She tried to move and reach out for Harry, but she felt too weak to do so.

"None of us is hiding Sirius Black under out cloaks!" said the new Professor, raising his wand at the Dementor. "Go."

But the Dementor didn't move.

So with that, he raised his wand even higher and muttered, "Expecto Patronum!"

With that, Jenna saw a silvery wolf shoot out of his wand and turned on the Dementor, causing it to glide away.

Soon, after the Dementors were all gone, the train started going once more.

"Harry! Harry! Are you all right?"
Hermione got to her knees, slapping Harry's face as he laid on the floor.

"W — what?" Harry opened his eyes slowly.

"Are you okay?" Ron asked nervously.

"Yeah," said Harry, looking quickly toward the door.

A loud snap made them all jump. Remus Lupin was breaking an enormous slab of chocolate into pieces.

"Here," he said to Harry, handing him a particularly large piece. "Eat it. It'll help."

"What was that thing?" Harry asked.

"A Dementor," he answered, now giving chocolate to everyone else. "One of the dementors of Azkaban."

Everyone stared at him.

"Eat," he repeated with a warm smile. A smile that Jenna had missed with all her heart. "It'll help."

But then, as Remus was looking around, his eyes fell upon the cat that was crumbled in a corner of the seat, staring up at him.

He blinked a few times, as if not believing his eyes. He then shook his head, getting up to his feet hesitantly.

"I-I need to speak to the driver, excuse me..." And with that, he left the compartment, still feeling dazed and confused.

Looking around to make sure no one was paying attention to her, Crookshanks left the compartment after Remus as well.

None of the students were in the corridor and they had all gathered to see their friends, so they wouldn't have to get over the shock alone, leaving some of the compartments empty and the others completely full.

Jenna was still following Remus to the front of the train in her cat form without him noticing her. Everyone was still so shocked that they couldn't care what was happening in the corridor.

So taking advantage of the diversion, Jenna quickly transformed herself back to human form and in a quick motion, she yanked the back of Remus's cloak and dragged him into one of the empty compartments, closing its door shut behind them.

"What the —" Remus was saying, but his mouth fell slightly open when he looked up at her and his eyes widened. "J-jenna?"
