River's p.o.v

The now high-school student, River, Is turning seventeen. It was dawn. He was on his computer studying for the big exam today. He's been up for weeks. without sleeping a wink. Anyone could easily spot the dark circles under his eyes. He was the kind of person who grew up with no friends. He tends to keep to himself. He was given the nickname fire-eyes because of his orange eyes. He didn't care. Getting dressed he got in his orange pants, yellow shirt, and red coat. If there was one thing that fascinated him it was what he was. Last year His parents told him a secret that they had kept to their-selves for sixteen years. He was the son of a dragon. He knew he was adopted, but being the son of a dragon? Ever since then, He's been questioning what he was.

         He raced down the stairs to the kitchen. He grabbed a bagel and ate it on his way out the door. He was the kind of nerd that was good in all professions. The only time he enjoyed himself was in gym class. The bullies at school avoided him was because he was strong, despite his size, as to expect from a dragons son. As he raced down the street, he heard whispers.

"There's fire-eyes again. Looks like he hasn't slept for weeks, how is he so fast?" one person said

      River ignored these comments. Was more focused on getting to school on time. His Grey-Black hair flew in his face. He was so focused on getting to school, he didn't notice the boy in front of him and barreled strait into him. "HEY! Watch it punk!" The boy shouted. River smirked. Time to pretend to be a wimp. He thought. He let the bully pick him up and push him against the concrete wall they were next to. The bully pushed him so hard, The wall cracked."Ha! How do you like that PUNK!" River stood up and glared at the bully.

             "You do realize that My name is River, Right?" River said. With blinding speed he punched the bully in the ribs. They both heard a loud crack. The bully went unconscious. Sighing, River picked him up and carried him to the school. When they arrived a few of the bullies friends approached River.

"Whoa! what happened to him!?" one of them said.

"He made the mistake of picking a fight with me, I accidentally broke his ribs trying to get him to stop. Do you mind taking him to the nurse? I cant carry him anymore." River said. Twelve other kids formed a crowd around River and the bully. Everyone in the crowd was murmuring.

"That person is twice the size of River and he still lost." one person said

"River is not your average nerd Idiot, He goes by the nickname Fire-Eyes." Said another.

"So this is Fire-Eyes, why is he given that nickname, looks like he hasn't slept for days." Said a third.

"He is given the name Fire-Eyes because he has Fire-Orange eyes, Idiot. Its rumored that he can go without sleep for months, and the only thing that will change is the fact that he has dark circles under his eyes." said a fourth.

River stood up and started walking into the school. A path instantly cleared through the crowd for him to get by. As soon as he entered the building, all the bullying that was going on instantly stopped and the biggest bully, dropped the freshman he was pushing into a locker, and ran at the sight of River. River walked over to the freshman boy, who was crying.  His arm was bleeding as well. River held out his hand gently towards the boy.

       "P-please... don't hurt me." The boy said weakly. River felt instant sympathy for him. This boy had clearly been picked on all his life. River grabbed his un-injured arm and pulled the boy to his feet. The boy look confused. "W-why are you helping me?"

              "I am helping you because  I can clearly see that you have been picked on for a long time." the boy look at River with hopeful eyes. "Now, let's get you to the nurse." He said.
       "U-um what's your name?" The boy asked. River looked at the boy and smiled.
"River, You?" The boy looked down.
          "My name is Jake." He said. The two continued walking down the hall until they got to the nurses office. The bell rang loud and clear. Thoughts filled River's mind. Have I truly found a friend? The thought stuck with him all day. During lunch, he studied some more. The exam was during the last class.
            During math, he was zoned out. He was thinking of dragons. What did his father look like? His mother? Which one was human? If he was half human half dragon, how'd he end up here. His phone started ringing. "River? Wanna answer that outside?" His math teacher called.
          "Sure." He looked at who it was as he hurriedly exited the classroom. The hospital. This worried River. His adoptive mother was hospitalized after she was diagnosed with cancer. He answered it. "Hello?"
"I'm sorry, River..." The doctors voice came through, he instantly knew. "We just lost her." The doctor said on the verge of tears. "Her last words were, River I love you..." Hearing this news broke him. He hung up, and walked back into the classroom. Tears in his eyes.
                 "Who was it?" The math teacher asked. River could barely speak.
"The hospital" he found the strength reply. "My mom just died." The whole class looked in shock.
       "If I'm correct, your father died In a car crash four weeks ago, right?" River nodded. He could never sleep since then. He was in that car, with his father, on their way to see his mother in the hospital. All of a sudden, another car came barreling out of control into them. His father died instantly, while River emerged unscathed.
          River snapped back to reality. His hands were shaking violently."I-I could never sleep since." He said.
"You should go to the nurses office to relax." The teacher said. River nodded, and walked out of the room.
