The pause before the tragedy
In what could be consider as a dreadful freezing, night in the countryside of Newcastle, 2 friends of mine were walking towards the apartment buildings in which I live. As they reached our house, some loud shouts were heard from outside. "Hey, Jen, come on, down here, the others are already waiting for us, we are running late," one of my friends shouted. While it seemed that I was never coming, I was able to convince my parents to let me go only with the horrible condition of bringing my idiotic brother, Joey, in what it seemed a trap planned from the beginning.
"Sorry for being so late Amy and thanks for waiting for me," I said, "What is that doing here?"- Amy disgustedly asked. As the seconds passed, the more awkward I was feeling this came at a time where Joey and the others were in war position. "I'm really sorry you guys, it was the only way my parents would let me get out of home," I regretfully apologised as she kept nagging me about how punctuality works as we started going to the place where we accorded with the other members of the group. It started getting colder to the level where the cold was passing through my clothes and at that point Amy strangely stopped protesting as she advised Joey not to come near hear.
"Don't worry I wouldn't go near you even if I was paid all the money in this planet, don't want to catch any disease, ya' know," responded Joey with a face full of arrogance and superiority. As Amy heard those statements she decided to harshly get back at him, "You have some nerve to be saying those things, hmph, at least I ain't no fuckin' virgin watching Chinese cartoons in his parents' basement, I thank God for giving me social skills and a social life".
If only Joey was someone who'd back down from an argument life would be much easier for everyone. "At least I'm not that ignorant since I can distinguish China from Japan, oh and btw I don't know what's more ridicule the fact that you're thanking an imaginary wizard for everything you think you do right or that you believe that it exists, and spare with your BS arguments since according to your logic you would be kneeling before me, ya' know since I am a virgin and all, heck, I would say I am more virgin than virgins themselves, huh, I guess I did gain holier status, isn't it ironical that you're bragging about how pure and social you are? Yet your person shows that you are a gross and horrible person", Joey responded with an annoyingly condescendence, which prompted Amy to brutally reply- "Why you little shit!".
At that point I didn't know what to do, I was lost in the moment, however, Stacey snapped quickly in order to stop the fight. "What are you doing?", Stacey asked in a chilled manner, she seemed so calm in a moment like that it was almost as she had no soul.
"It was him who started, I am the victim here, and shouldn't you be at my side?"- Amy complained almost with tears in her face, at that point Stacey was in the same rhetoric she didn't change her mind, her imposing eyes were staring at Amy, after seeing that she finally drop it. I was thankful for that, but I wrongly assumed that argument ended as she slowly turned to Joey "you should mind your language", Stacey advised Joey. "Oh, now you're giving me the chat? Spare me, wasn't your friend the one telling me how pure she was? Wasn't your friend telling me how gross I was?" it didn't pass through Stacey's head to back off from as she stared Joey with cold eyes that expressed darkness and hatred, however, what surprised me was the fact that Joey wasn't intimidated at all, in fact he was pretty calm.
"Next time you speak like that I'll break your bones", Stacey answered with a thug like threat. When Joey heard that his expression quickly changed and I never seen him with that face, his eyes were speaking for him but they were telling how gross Stacey was and his face was emanating hatred, it was a sad expression typical of someone rather lonely, at that moment when I realised things were going to escalate I decided to step in and separate the two of them. "Stop, troubling my friends you moron don't pull your frustration on us", I argued in a moment of despair, but, it didn't seem to have an effect as Joey looked in my eyes with even more resentment than before, something that made me back off, at that point the others decided to cool down a bit, but he seemed lost looking at me with hostility,"Pfft, whatever" he mumbled as he decided to look other way. At that point we were halfway of our destiny.
We started hurrying as much as we could since it was almost time. The three of us decided to chit-chat as we're going while Joey was in the back listening to music. "How do you think the others are going to react when they see Joey?" I asked in a desperate attempt to break the ice. "They will eat you alive, I wouldn't like to be in your shoes if I were you right now," Amy answered as she tried to scare me. Amy suddenly stops as if something caught her attention. "Hey, you guys get going, I will catch you in a bit"- Amy said. As she retroceded she crossed looks with Joey, their eyes showed darkness in those few seconds they crossed paths. I was wondering what did Amy had to so importantly, as time passed we were almost reaching our destiny, fortunately I had Stacey by my side to speak with, otherwise it would be awkward with Joey, but it mean that being with her wouldn't be awkward as well due to what happened with her and that idiot.
"I-I'm sorry, for what happened with Joey, I shouldn't have brought him with us," I regretfully apologised since that moron messed everything up by saying those words, she then surprisingly exchanged apologies- "No I should be the one apologising for threatening your brother". "No, no, no, you shouldn't say these things, it would be a blessing if you did and besides you're better than him", I innocently said to her, however this didn't prompt her to have a good answer for me as she disgustedly looked at me, it was almost as she was repulsed at me "It is amazing how naively you can spew disgusting things, but what is more impressive is how you say things like that while ignoring what is happening around you," she stated while her blue eyes were filled with that same scary coldness. At that point I decided to ignore those harsh words and changed quickly the conversation topic- "Oh boy it is cold, for sure,"- but I couldn't take out of my head that moment, she looked completely imposing and with that panoramic she seemed like the snow woman from the stories that Joey likes to read about, and with that cruel look in her face I wouldn't be able to forget it anytime soon.
As we were almost reaching the point where we were supposed to meet with the others it started to snow. At some point Amy caught with us, meaning that our group was complete. "Sorry you girls, it did take a long time"- Amy apologised as she was resting from trying to catch us. That made me question what was she doing all this time as I was still a bit salty about her lecture earlier on. "What were you doing that it took you so long? Because the last time you gave me the lecture of the century for being late"- In an attempt to get an answer I dubiously decided to put her on the on the spot. "Ok, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have took so long, it was a bit hypocritical of me to give you a sermon, but I promise you it will be awesome, I'll tell ya' more about it later when we arrive," Amy answered quickly by giving an excuse as she realised what I was trying to do.
As we were approaching the site we could already see the others reunited as we reached just in time to meet with everyone else. "Hey, everyone,"- Amy shouted in order to notice the others we arrived. "Oh hey, how are you?" John greeted us as he saw us approaching to the group.
"So, it was true, that he was coming. I'm assuming that this is Bob and Linda's doing, am I right?" John guessed everything as probably Amy may have told him what happened. "I'm really sorry I had no option," I apologised to John for troubling him so much, however, he didn't seem very troubled- "Oh no, there is no need to apologise, in fact it is a good thing that he is here, and as Amy told you we will explain it in a bit," He told me in a calming way. "Aal reet peeps, listen up, I will explain this only once, so pay attention closely," John raised his voice as he was proceeding to explain what would consist the activity "Oi, you the freak with the headphones listen up to the cool people, you might get something from listening to us," John demanded Joey in order to listen, however Joey didn't appear to listen, in fact it seemed that he was completely ignoring.
"Hey, muddafucka', are you listening? I demanded you to listen," John reclaimed as he was starting to lose his patience. Joey finally took his headphones out, but it wasn't for the reasons he was asked for. "Huh, beta male, what was that? It's not that I couldn't hear you; it's just that I didn't want to. See, I don't want to get anything from listening to you, say, cancer, herpes, HIV or stupidity which in your language would be mental retardation," Joey replied in a insulting manner to John, that didn't prompt a good response by John which was infuriated, he then proceeded to grab Joey by his clothes, as he was saying "Beta male? That is a bit wrong, isn't it, freak? And to the guy who is constantly fucking your big sister". "Oh yeah, I can't wait until you screw up and get her pregnant, I bet you're going to run away to your mommies' arms asking for her help or just abandon her," Joey insulted John as he was being confronted by him. At that moment I couldn't really do anything but to support John as Joey was being a massive dick, and while almost everyone was hoping for John to knock his teeth off, all of a sudden I was having the sensation someone was glaring me, and indeed it was Stacey who was staring at me with a stone cold look, I honestly was afraid of that look, it just petrified my mind as it creeped me out. "John just leave it, it's no use," I decided to intervene in the dispute as it was the only way to take make her stop. "Are you nuts? You more than anyone know how much this dimwit needs to be beat up, right? Besides he fucking disrespected me in front of everyone, so it's fair that I break his teeth," John rightly stated and I agreed but I rather have Stacey not haunting me with that look.
After a moment John decided to let go of him, however he had that annoying smirk which prompted John to punch him in the face. Stacey finally stopped looking at me, and after John proceeded to explain the activity "All right, everyone, listen up, this activity will consist in a courage test, the thing is that this building over here is a haunted castle from the 8th century and it is believed that inside there are ghosts that will kill anyone who dares entering the castle, and to pass this test you will need to spend 2h in the castle, but there is one thing, you will need to go with a partner and if you don't comeback with that person you will automatically fail the test". Everyone had their doubts about going inside a 8th century castle in ruins and spend a considerate amount of time in that building it was a crazy idea and adding the fact that it was nighttime to make things more scary.
"Now everyone, the cool big boys will decide the groups and while that happens Stacey and Yubin, you will stay here with the freak, if he dares to touch you just shout we will be here in a second," John explained. Everyone else followed John to the back of the castle to decide the plan. "Is it a good idea to leave them with that moron on their side? I don't know if it is safe to do that," Amy expressed her worries as we were distancing ourselves from the three of them, anyone wasn't keen on the idea but it was for the sake of the activity.
John explained that the plan was to make a prank to that idiot and for that 4 people would be entering the building in order to make the preparatives of the prank without those three knowing, the 4 people would be Jones, David, Vince and Archer and as for the groups it would be Yubin and the moron, Stacey and Amy, and me and John, and the secret part of the plan would be that the group entering the house first would attack Joey and locking him in the castle as we know he would eventually find an exit, it was difficult thinking it as this part was my idea.
When we reunited the others we explained the groups and the order of entrance as we agreed, when John finished explaining everything, Yubin understandably opposed to the idea of going with Joey "Why me? Why do I have to be with him? Is this a fucking joke?". "If you want to be part of the group, just do what you're told to do, and if you don't like it you can just go back from where you came from, is that clear?" John tried to assert his position, "Crystal" Yubin agreed defiantly as she had no other option. When everyone was getting ready, we received the signal, however it was not the signal we accorded, instead... shouts were coming from John's mobile phone, everyone from the ones who knew what was the plan, started to get worried.
"Where are the other three?" Stacey asked, and when John heard that, he started to lose composure "Uh-uh they had some stuff to do and left. Uh, ok everyone change of plans, we will enter altogether and we will separate in the already known groups, understood?" John stated in an attempt to recover himself but, he didn't appear to be as confident as he was before. It was half past seven and everyone decided to enter the castle and as accorded to the plan everyone decided to split with their partner and started to explore the haunted castle.
