Chapter 18
Moana POV
Maui's smile turned to a frown. He was thinking about something. I just didn't know what.
I headed slowly up to the shore and splashed him. His gaze jerked up me as the water made contact. I grinned and gave a terrified laugh as he stood, smirking at me. I giggled and ran back into the water.
It was like being a little kid again, except this time my father wasn't here to tell me to stop.
Maui was still smirking at me and I ran deeper into the water. Maui was close behind. When my feet could barely touch the ground I took a deep breath and dived into the water.
I resurfaced with a giggle. I swam back to the shore and ran into the woods. Maui was chasing after me. I turned left and right, did double takes and zigzagged through the dense forest.
I didn't know what it was but for some reason I felt I had to get away from Maui. His footsteps slowly faded and I slowed. My breathing was light and rapid whereas his was heavy and he was taking huge gulps.
I felt adrenaline rush through me as Maui slowly began to approach me. I had to get out of there. Maui seemed shocked at my unexpected run away.
I ran to my hut and closed the door.

The Next Morning
I spent the morning avoiding Maui. Whenever I wanted to approach him a voice inside told me to walk away.
I helped Mother plan my birthday, which was in just under two weeks, and Father was helping the villagers get ready for the next Voyage.
I was in the garden at the moment. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Maui approaching. As if it were instinct I began looking for an escape. He was getting close and I couldn't just leave or else he'd notice.
When I finally did find an escape it was too late. Maui cleared his throat behind me, making me jump and turn around. I backed up slowly against a tree. He approached me with caution.
My breathing became shallow as I didn't know why. I just wanted to get out of there. Maui stopped just a few feet from me. My breath hitched in my throat.
"Why are you avoiding me," he asked.
"To be honest, I don't know," I whispered, fear edged my voice. He must have seen the confusion in my eyes because he slowly approached me.
My eyes snapped up to him. I felt a feeling I hadn't felt in a while. Fear.
He must have seen that in my eyes too because he stopped again just a foot from me.
"Moana, what's going on?"
"I-I don't know M-Maui," I stuttered, my eyes never leaving his.
He looked at me with a suspicious scowl. I felt my heart skip a beat and my breath caught in my throat.
He gazed deep into my eyes, never break in contact. I started to shuffle away when his eyes dropped to the scar on my stomach.
I became uncomfortable and Maui must have sensed this because he sighed a looked away. I let out the breath I hadn't realized I was holding.
What was wrong with me! Maui's my best friend, I shouldn't feel uncomfortable. I was thinking about going to apologize but something held me back.
I'm sorry. I thought.
