"You don't suppose I could get away with it, do you?"
The young girl giggled, the sound of her laughter fading into the air surrounding them. Her blue robes corresponded with the four poster beds she sleept on every night.
"I'd say you would. With my help, of course."
The girls laughed in sync, the magic from their wands flowing through the air, disappearing as it got closer to the ceiling above them, like smoke.
Heather sat up from her laying position, her arm bending to rest her head onto her palm. "Luna, you're not seriously thinking about bringing a bunny rabbit into the school, are you?"
The blonde girl next to her gently smiled, humming. "I don't know. Maybe? I just feel so lonely sometimes. A friend would be nice."
Heather cast her eyes downwards, guilt manipulating her form. "I know, Luna, and it's my fault. I haven't been spending time with you, and-"
"Nonsense, Heather. I know you've been busy. Besides, you're going to be busy later on, so I feel like I should prepare myself."
A sigh escaped the young witch's lips. She began reminiscing, memories of her and the blonde girl in Astronomy class, pointing out constellations they haven't seen before.
An echo of their time in the snow clouded her thoughts, creating angels in the soft weather.
Although, her favourite remembrance was that one summer they spent together. She was excited to tell her parents about the new friend she made during her second year. She couldn't bear to depart from her, even if it was only for a couple of months.
That was the last time she felt free to be a kid, after that, it was a burden to her parents to act so childish. Doing so made her a fool. She had not wished to remain a fool.
"I-",
"I just miss you, Moon."
The girl smiled like she was straight out of a movie scene, "I miss you, too, Cinnamon."
"Did you just-"
"I did."
—Summer of 1992–
"Luna! Where are you going?"
The girl ran after the other, lungs burning from chasing after her outside all day.
"Luna! Come back!"
She rounded the corner, only to find nothing in the distance. The blonde one was nowhere to be found, the garden of lovely grass and flowers doing nothing to help her search for her new friend.
A tiny hand grabbed her wrist, and she fell onto the soil-covered ground.
A shriek sounded in the air, giggles from both the girls quickly following after.
"Are you crazy? I couldn't find you anywhere!"
Luna laughed once more, "Here I am!"
They both helped each other rise to their feet, dusting the dirt off their clothing.
"Come on, let's go inside, I'm hungry."
They walked hand in hand inside the kitchen, teapots and various herbs covered the counters.
"I made some cookies if you girls are hungry!", a voice sounded from somewhere in the house.
"Thank you, father!"
"Thank you, Mister Xenophilius!"
Moments passed, the young girls searching the entire kitchen for the cookies Luna's father made.
"I found them!"
Luna rushed to her side, observing the freshly made dessert.
—Present—
Luna's hand found hers, their fingers intertwining, Heather's nerves instantly relaxing at her friend's touch. The sense of her friend's hand on hers brought her back from the memory.
"You haven't called me that name in years..."
"I know I haven't. So, I guess my being lonely was both of our faults, huh?"
Heather shook her head in disapproval, "You know that's not true, Moon."
"Well, I'm going to say so anyways."
They looked at each other, eyes wide before laughter wildly escaping their mouths. Bending over in fits of hysterics, remembering what their friendship used to feel like.
"Wait, Luna, you said something about me being busy later on?"
The blonde girl was still wiping tears away from her face before she focused her attention onto what her friend had asked her. "You said what?"
"Earlier,", she began, wanting her friend to remember what she had spoken of just moments ago, "you said that I would be too busy later on, so you had to bring that bunny rabbit into the castle."
Luna's expression seemed as if she was daydreaming, the reality being that she was attempting to remember what she had said not ten minutes ago.
Her eyebrows raised in knowing, "Oh! Yes, I remember. What of it?"
"What was that about? I don't have any plans for 'later on', so I don't see how I'll be too busy to be your friend. I would love to spend more time with you."
Luna looked at her friend as if Heather had no idea what she was talking about. "Well, I'm sure that you do, but I thought you had already made plans with Professor Moody? As in, long-term plans."
Heather chuckled, unsure of what the girl next to her was speaking of. "Luna, how do you mean? What plans? I never made plans with Professor Moody."
Luna scrunched her lips together in uncertainty, "Are you sure? I could've sworn I heard Professor Moody talking to someone about the plans you made with him."
The girl turned her chin to the side, curiousness flowing through her. "Okay then, what are these so-called plans you're telling me about?"
"Oh, when I tell you, it was extremely strange. He was going on and on about how 'the plan mustn't fail', and 'it all depended' on you.", she quoted, bending her fingers in the air for nothing more than emphasis.
The girl listening began chuckling, not taking her friends' words seriously. "Okay, what happened next?"
Luna thought back. "Hmm, oh, yes. Then, he was complaining about how, supposedly, The Dark Lord left too much of the plan under your hands."
The Gryffindor girl did nothing but stare into her lap, not knowing what to think of the situation. After all, she had no clue what this whole thing was about.
Luna kept on rambling, however.
"I mean, what he said was unusual in the first place, but that part about He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named really knocks my senses off the radar."
Silence continued from the girl next to her.
"I mean, only Death Eaters call him The Dark Lord."
Brown eyes snapped to Luna's blue ones almost immediately.
"What did you just say, Luna?"
Luna gazed at her innocently, "Come on, Heather. You don't really think-"
"No, I don't. But I have heard Moody call him that name before."
Luna connected the dots seconds after, remembering of Heather's bond with the professor. "Maybe it's just a coincidence."
The girl simply looked up at the ceiling, the magic not there anymore. "Yeah, you're probably right. Just some strange coincidence."
Luna scrunched her lips together once more, placing her hand on her friends' shoulder,
"Hey, it's going to be alright. I mean, under all of that frustration, Moody seems like a nice enough guy. He treats you like you're his favorite student, or something. There's no way he'd do anything to harm you or use you, I doubt it."
Heather smiled gently at her long-time friend.
"Thank you, Moon. You're right, I'm probably just overthinking it."
The girls hugged, silence comforting them in the otherwise abandoned dorm room.
"On that note, I'm off to bed. We need some rest for the final task tomorrow."
"Oh shit! I forgot that was so soon! I'll see you tomorrow, yeah? Save me a seat."
Luna grinned, "Where would my bunny rabbit sit, then?"
Heather giggled, "He'll have enough room."
The girls laughed once more before the blonde one went off to bed.
Heather, however, couldn't rest after what her companion had told her of, even after making her way back to the Gryffindor common room.
She snuck out of the dorms, away from the constellation-covered walls of the Ravenclaw tower. Her mind couldn't shut off after hearing the words coming from her friends mouth.
The girl found herself entering the doors of the school library, wanting the friendly smell of the dated books to fill her senses.
She roamed the aisles, each section inviting her to read the words on each page on every book.
A sound of heavy footsteps echoed throughout the great room, a flicker of light flashed through the corner of the girl's eyes.
"Oh fuck.", she whispered.
She kept quiet and hid, not looking to be caught by the person who entered.
"Out here for a late night read, are we?"
"Oh my go-"
The man behind her chuckled, "Scared ya, didn't I?"
Heather placed her hand onto where her heart rested, her breathing irregular. "Professor Moody! What- What are you doing o- out here?"
He looked at her as if to tell her that she couldn't get out of this situation, no matter how hard she tried.
He took a gulp of the liquid kept on him, "No need for that. Why aren't you in your dorm?"
Heather bounced her sights from every corner, not wanting to look the man in the eyes.
"I-"
"I was just-"
"She was with me, Professor."
A shadow stepped out from behind Moody. Heather was unable to see him, but she knew exactly who he was. His voice was his own, no one could copy one like it.
"Malfoy? Come on, Heather. You're really risking detention to sneak out with this twa-"
"I'll have you know, Professor, we've both been here since classes ended. You see, time passed by, and we hadn't noticed."
Draco continued lying his way out of punishment. "You know what they say, time flies by when you're having fun.", he chuckled, lowly.
Bastard.
Moody turned to the girl, "Is this true, what he says?"
Heather gulped. Looking at Draco, then back at the man.
"Yes."
"It is."
Moody looked at the young boy behind him, humming to himself in amusement.
"Alright then. The both of you, back to your dorms, immediately."
The girl walked up to the blond one, the both of them turning to leave in the same direction.
"Especially you, Heather."
She turned back around to face her teacher.
"You're going to need your rest for tomorrow."
Without another second to spare dwelling on his words, she began her footsteps out of the library.
It sounded dead silent now, both of them leaving without a sound, she followed her way back into the Gryffindor tower.
Not even three steps out into the hallway, a cold hand grabbed her arm and brought her to the side of the library entrance.
"That was something, no?"
She sighed. "What do you want now, Malfoy?"
He smirked, a chuckle following his action, "Oh, nothing, I just love getting you all worked up."
Heather placed a smirk on her lips. She was tired of Malfoy getting to her. She wanted to do the same to him.
"What were you doing in the library, Malfoy?"
His eyebrows raised, "Excuse me?"
"You're excused. But, you heard me."
His temper rose against him. He didn't open his mouth. He wasn't planning on it.
"You obviously didn't follow me here. And you aren't here with anybody else. So, what could you be doing in the library at this time of night?"
Draco kept his eyes on hers, not wanting to let himself loose. "I could ask you the same thing."
She hummed. "Don't try to pin this on me. Besides, I already told Professor Moody I couldn't sleep."
She moved her body so that he could move his, subconsciously, and before he knew it, he found himself trapped against the concrete wall, and her.
His breath became ragged, his clothed chest moving rapidly.
"Since you're not complying, I'll ask you just one more time."
He began to panic, his eyes moving around the hallway.
"What were you doing here?"
"As if it's any of your business!"
Her body shocked back at his voice, his temper surrounding the air.
"It's not like you need to know. Nobody needs to know. Nobody can know."
Heather observed the boy, her insides betraying her. "Malfoy, calm down-"
"No, don't tell me to calm down!"
She looked around, cautiously, not wanting to get caught another time. "Malfoy, shut up, someone could hear."
His hands overworked themselves along his scalp, flying through his hair to relieve some type of tension.
"I'm expected to do this...with- with no mistakes!"
"Malfoy-"
"No! I- I can't- I can't do it. I can't do it."
"Mal- Malfoy!"
His hands tugged at the strands of his hair, removing his suit jacket, feeling the coolness of the wall behind him.
"I can't do it- I- I can't do it-",
His words ended right as he felt her lips on his.
His eyes wide, looking at the girl who was kissing him, not comprehending a single act of hers, before he closed them, deepening the feel of her on himself.
Her hands flew up to his neck, calming his nerves instantly. He relaxed against her, his hand landing on her waist to hold himself steady.
The act made her wake up, realizing that she did this only to shut him up, not because she wanted to feel him again. Definitely not for that reason.
When he opened his eyes again, she was at the end of the hallway, and her figure faded away.
—Draco's POV—
He locked the door to his own private room, his hands turning off the light and walking straight towards his shower.
The water ran down his skin as he stood there, feeling paralyzed.
His hands landed against the wall, regaining his balance as the thought of her made him dizzy.
"Fuck."
He began thinking. That's all he felt like he did.
Nothing, but think.
Thinking about what he had to do. Thinking about her, and how difficult she made it.
"She wasn't supposed to run away...", he whispered against himself.
"She wasn't supposed to leave."
