Chapter 35: Half truths
A little quick sketch I made during class ^^
"He's here."
Dryden Vos wasn't the most pleasant man to look at. Sure, he wore he a nice black suit that fit him nicely, and his white button up underneath was opened just enough to view his muscled chest. But it were those red scars running down his face that made a shiver run up my spine.
He walked confidently; each step surer than the previous one as his eyes scanned the crowd like a hawk. When those piercing blue eyes landed on me, it seemed like everything stopped for a moment. My breath hitched in my throat but I narrowed my eyes, nonetheless, staring right back as I forced a smirk to play on my lips. I was to be the queen, not the doctor I had been for months. It would take some getting used to.
"Are you all right?" Obi Wan whispered into my ear as the grip of his hand tightened around my own. Only then did I realize that we were still dancing.
"I'm fine." My eyes flickered to his for just a moment before they darted back to Vos as he casually sat down at the bar, his hand reaching for the glass of whiskey that was instantly given to him. Oh, he surely was the man in power here. That stern, assessing look that glided over the crowd was enough for me to tell. It almost screamed of a certain possessiveness, superiority, as if he knew that he could take on every single one of the men gathered there and live to tell the tale.
Again, his gaze landed on me, gliding over my figure and the man that still held me tightly. His eyes narrowed at the sight of the gold especially, the exact thing that betrayed our supposed 'high' status. He seemed to snicker then and turned back towards the bar. Disinterested. I scowled, feeling the frustration building in me at the sign of rejection.
"Stay here." I didn't even spare the jedi a glance as I let go of him, daring a step towards my prey. When a hand clasped around my wrist and pulled me back, I staggered in my steps and ended up scowling at him after I'd found my balance. People around us noticed the slight commotion and all turned their gazes towards us. "What do you think you're doing?" I glared up at him as he towered over me.
"Giving you an extra edge, dear." Obi Wan whispered so only I could hear. "Now, be careful."
A slight, almost invisible nod was my only reaction before I tore my wrist out of his grasp and straightened my spine, eyes narrowing to the point that they seemed to spit actual fire. Everyone around us held in their breath at the danger suddenly evident in my eyes. Even the jedi, who accepted his role, seemed to shrink into himself at that glare and stepped back. "My deepest apologies, your highness." He bowed deeply, hand poised above his heart and his nose getting awfully close to the floor. "I didn't know what came over me."
"Get out of my sight." Snarling, I waved him away, feeling an odd satisfying tug at my heart as he scattered away instantly. Chin held high, I turned back only to spot Dryden looking at me again, this time with a vague interest clear in his eyes.
Thank you, Obi Wan.
I took in a deep breath as I strode towards Vos, making sure my hips were swaying enough. When I arrived I merely took a seat a few feet away, motioning towards the bartender. "Give me your best whiskey." I smiled, leaning over the bar just slightly and noticed Dryden raking his eyes over my leg that was now exposed.
"Not one for games, are you?" He drawled, sipping his gaze leisurely.
My eyes widened slightly, having the vague idea that I'd heard that voice before. As my mind raced I simply turned towards him, shrugging as I accepted the drink that was handed to me. "I'm afraid I don't have that luxury." I took in his features, trying to seem just as unimpressed as he was. That face, I was sure I'd remember it if I'd ever met him before. And yet, that voice seemed oddly familiar.
Dryden hummed as that assessing stare deepened, his drink swirling between his fingers. "I don't remember inviting you." His gaze flickered to one of his guards. A threat, only to show me he could capture me that easily. "Or your... impressive companion." Then those eyes slid to Obi Wan as he studied us from the other corner of the room, arms folded before his chest like some vigilant husband. I then noticed the four other guards that were slowly stalking their way towards him.
My muscles tightened, the urge to grasp for my sword intensifying. "Oh, we weren't invited." I summoned an easy smile, drawling the words, ignoring the sense of danger looming. I had to be fearless, before he'd loose interest all together. "But I think you're going to be glad we came." Dryden only scoffed in response and turned back towards the crowd. Fine, I'll work harder. "Unless you're not interested in a ship full of adamantium."
Dryden snapped his eyes right back to mine. "You mean the adamantium that was recently claimed by the Republic after your escapades on Coruscant, queen Fireheart?" The corner of his lips lifted, humour flickering in his eyes after I'd flinched. "Yes, I know you, your majesty. In fact, I know everyone around here." He motioned towards the people gathered. "They all have... certain uses to me, are loyal to me where as you..." His eyes narrowed when he turned back towards me. "You're as trustworthy as your recent activities claim."
I scoffed, leaning my elbows on the bar as I diverted my eyes to the dancing crowd. How much did he know, exactly? "Don't tell me you wouldn't want to wreck property of the Republic." Sipping casually, I tried not to flinch at the taste of the whiskey. Strong, even for me, and I hadn't had any drinks for a while now.
"They took something from me so I aimed to make them regret it. As I do now." I diverted my gaze back towards my prey, leaning over just slightly. My stomach lurched as his eyes dropped down to my chest, my knuckles tingling with the urge to connect with his jaw. Ignoring that, I dropped my voice to a deep, low purr. "And I, I always get what I want." I cocked my head to the side as those eyes studied me, the interest growing. "So, will you help me, Dryden Vos?"
He leaned in too and I had to hold my breath, tried not to recoil. "Tell me how you did it." Dryden's eyes travelled over my body, noting the silk dress and the absence of weapons. "How did a queen like you wreck 4 Republic cruisers?"
So, he didn't know about the seidr. Good. I smirked, sipping my drink as I kept his gaze locked with mine. "Only one way to find out, Vos."
Dryden scoffed and pulled back, stepping away in one fluid movement. "I have other matters to attend to." He spared me one more disinterested glance. Like what?
Wait.
I stilled, realizing why exactly he was here, on this planet, when the king was being hunted by an unknown organization. While the very same man had been hunted by a crimson sith days prior to his arrival. "Maybe you should try a more... desperate man, your highness." Dryden continued before turning his back on me.
Scowling, I tried not to growl as he walked away with swaggering steps. Yet, the newly discovered plot had me smirking viciously. "What does your master think about this, I wonder?" He halted in his tracks, stilling. So, I was right. "I'm sure that he could use the adamantium, you know, with the unrest rising in Mandalore. Especially now that he plans to take this planet, too." I was treading on dangerous waters, I realized, when he turned back to me with a murderous glare.
"Or maybe I should go back to the Republic instead. I'm sure that this vital information would be sufficient to reclaim my lost property." I smiled devishly as I stalked towards him, fingers gliding over the fabric covering his chest when I was near. "Because for as far as I know... he is still a fugitive from the jedi order. And boy, I believe they'll be thrilled when they hear, -"
"Enough." Suddenly his hand snapped around my wrist, those eyes glaring down at me. But I didn't back down. No, I stared right back up defiantly, pressing my mouth into a thin line as my fingers inched towards the sword strapped to my thigh. I wanted to shrug him off, snap his wrist for even daring to touch me. It'd have to wait.
"Come with me, your highness." Dryden seemed to collect himself as that devastating grip loosened. That murderous gaze now changed to a calm, assessing one as he looped my arm over his. "We have a lot to discuss."
It could be a trap. My eyes flickered towards Obi Wan in the corner, saw him looking at us worriedly. A simple nod that followed as a confirmation. "Lead the way, master Vos." A flirtatious smile was all that was needed to convince him of my supposed harmlessness.
An interesting evening, indeed.
~
Gold everywhere, a white couch and a room filled with a precious collection existing out of the weirdest pieces of art I'd ever seen before in my life. I had to try my best to keep my expression neutral as he led me inside and immediately aimed for the liquor cabinet, his cape whooshing behind him. "Leave us." He ordered the guards that had followed. They stepped back into the elevator and disappeared as soon as those doors closed behind them.
I was trapped there, with him. Alone. The corner of my lips lifted. Good.
Dryden turned back towards me, calmy assessing my movements as I let my fingers glide over the golden armrests of the couch. He didn't notice my eyes that were darting around to find the communication device I was looking for.
"Tell me, your highness, -" My eyes snapped back to his. "you know who I work for, know who he is, so how could you possibly have thought this through?" His mouth pulled into a sinister smile.
"Because I've heard the stories, Dryden." I had to be careful. Had to think about every word before I'd blow my cover. I was locked in this room with him, and there was no doubt on my mind that he was more dangerous than he looked. I just hoped that Dryden didn't realize the doctor Maul had no doubt told him about was the same person as was standing before him.
"I know he's ruthless, unrelenting. He would do anything to get what he wants. But above all, he hates the Republic with a certain... passion." My eyes then landed on the exact device I was looking for, lying on the table right between me and him, in plain sight. I connected our gazes again, mirroring his smile. "And that's exactly what I need."
"Mmh, yes." Vos seemed to contemplate that as he placed his drink back on the counter and stalked towards me. "Yet, you came to me." He pointed out. "Why is that?"
He was testing me, there was no doubt on my mind. "Well, I can't really make an appointment with one of the most wanted men alive, can I?" I dared a few steps back from his advancement, slightly turning my back towards him. "I'm sure you could help me find him, and help me with this shipment, too." I could find Maul before he found me and Obi Wan would never have to know. Making sure he couldn't see the creeping curiosity in my eyes, I turned away and instead eyed one of the art pieces in the room, examining it after I'd grasped the glassy object.
Dryden chuckled lowly, eyes piercing. "Oh, you don't want to find him, my dear." He leaned forward with his hands leaning on the back of the couch. I crinched at the word, the urge to punch him growing worse with each second. "Not with that companion you brought."
My limbs froze almost immediately, eyes snapping wide open. "Don't worry, he's fine, for now." I let out a small breath of relief. "Tell me, does general Kenobi know you're after his nemesis?" Vos's voice dropped as each word send jolts through my chest. He knew, he knew all along and I fell right into his trap.
"No, and I'd like to keep it that way." Shit, shit, shit. I tried to remain calm as I placed the art piece back on its surface, fingers creeping towards my thigh as I turned back to face him. Oh, he was so sure of himself, I saw as that victorious shine lingered in his eyes. He no doubt thought he'd captured an easy prey. Let him think that. Easier to take him on when the moment arises. "Care to tell me his location, Dryden?"
The man scoffed and straightened up. "No worries, my dear, he'll be here as soon as I call." His eyes darted towards the very same device I'd spotted. Good. His own fingers inched towards his pocket and pulled out metal shackles, dangling it before me. "Now, be a good girl."
Faking a sigh of defeat, I walked towards him but held that smile, eyes assessing his posture as I held up my wrists before him when I'd arrived. "Such a shame, Vos." I pouted as he clasped the metal around my one wrist and reached for the other. "This could've gone so much easier."
Then, with one swift strike when he was still focused on the shackles, my fist landed on his jaw and made him stagger back a few feet in both surprise and agony. He let out a blood curling scream as he turned back, hands now reaching for the two daggers at his side but found me holding a valerian great sword in my own, already aimed at his chest.
"Surprise." I smirked before jumping right on top of him, parrying one of his blows and kicking my foot out to the other, knocking the dagger right out of his grasp. Again, he staggered back, letting out a frustrated groan as he watched my advancing steps. "Where is he?" I demanded, parrying the blow he'd tried to land after.
Dryden aimed for my throat with his next strike but I darted through under his arm, grasping it after and twisting it behind his back. "You bitch, -" He snarled in response as he tried to wriggle free.
"I won't ask again." I growled in his ear. "Where is Maul?!"
"Believe me, -" Dryden practically laughed as I held my sword against his throat. "You don't want to find out." Then, he elbowed me right in my stomach, a blow that had me doubling over by the impact. With a few skill full manoeuvres, he managed his way out of my grasp, those icy eyes landing on me soon after as I tried to catch the breath he'd knocked out of my lungs. He reached for the lost knife, throwing it up and casually catching it mid-air.
"Let's see what you're made of, your highness." He smirked, making me let out an infuriated huff before advancing again, the red fabric of my dress waving behind me as I lunched. Flames singed under my skin, but I had to keep them as a last resort before I'd blow up the entire ship. But there was one other thing I could still use, one power that wasn't actually mine.
As our fight continued, slices and stabs launched from either side, I called out to that dark power that had been with me for months. Arthas. With each slice that landed on my limbs, with each drop of blood he summoned, that word echoed through my head until a few moments later when I could hear him loud and clear.
"Yes, my little dragon?" I could feel the warmth of his body at my back, the soft gusts of wind of his breath on my ear as his fingers inched over my shoulders. Dryden watched as I stilled, lifting his arms up in defence, oblivious to the force that gathered but noticing the change in the atmosphere.
Want to do the honours? My lips lifted in a sinister smile as those hands glided down my arms, inching closer towards my hands. With that motion shadows seemed to gather around me, closing in, suffocating me and I let them.
Dryden didn't want to wait to find out what it meant. He darted forward, sweeping the dagger right for my throat. "I thought you'd never ask." Arthas chuckled into my ear like a lover's whisper as he entangled our fingers and took over right before that cold steel could reach my throat. Using my limbs, he sent a wave of darkness towards Dryden that had him thrown back in one mighty blow. Even when his body connected with multiple art displays did his speed never slow until he was pressed against the wall of the chamber.
I followed through the wake of rubble, inching closer as my heels clicked against the floor. Arthas hummed in my ear as he held Vos's body there but relinquished the control back to me. "I'll ask you one more time, -" I pinned his hand against the wall with my heel and twisted it, snapping the bones, making him scream out in agony as I lifted my sword against his throat. "Where is Maul?!"
Dryden gritted his teeth, eyes glaring down at me as he strained against the dark bonds holding him in place. "He'll kill me if I tell you."
I let that darkness slither into my eyes as I inched closer. "You really think I won't?" He actually shivered, shivered as my eyes turned cold and that vicious power made my voice turn guttural.
"He's here, on Adrena, -" Dryden started but when a sound came from the elevator he stilled as his gaze shifted towards it. I immediately turned towards the entrance, scanning for any more assailants and dropped my focus before I could help it. Because right there was Obi Wan, hair tussled and suit out of order, his lightsaber in his hand as he watched the display with wide eyes.
"Wait, no, -" Dryden slipped right out of my grasp when that darkness disappeared, lunching for the daggers he'd dropped to the floor. Yet one push from Obi Wan send him flying across the room, his head connecting with the counter with a sickening crunch that had him falling in a heap of mess on the floor.
"What in the, -" From his unconscious body to the jedi standing in the entrance my eyes darted, a frustrated sigh following. "I had him!" I yelled, trying to hide my fear of him having heard the conversation. There is no time to ask if he did.
"Of course you did." Obi Wan let out a breathy huff as he dropped his arm. "But there are guards on their way and we need to go." He seemed to gather his wits as his eyes ventured back to me, scanning my body for any injuries. All he found were a few cuts on my legs with a few traces of blood. "Did you find it?" He asked when he'd finished his survey.
Cursing under my breath, I darted towards the table and grasped the device. "No use in trying to remain secretive about this anymore." I threw it his way.
"Exactly what I was thinking, my darling." Obi Wan caught it easily and stuffed it in one of his pockets before he'd held out his arm for me. Those blue eyes twinkled with a certain excitement as he waited. "Are you ready?"
I swung away the loose strand of hair that'd fallen before my face and made my way towards him through the rubble. "I hope you have an escape plan."
The jedi chuckled as he laid his hand on my back the moment I slipped past him. "I always do, my queen, I always do."
Hope you enjoyed that!
More badass Obi en Lyanna moments are on their way ;)
