Chapter 33: Compromises

It was the docking of one of the new arrivalled ships that had the queen awakening from her deep slumber. Slowly her eyes opened, scanning the room with a hooded lid, finding the glass of water on her nightstand waiting to be drowned. The memories from the night before came crashing down on her like a tidal wave. She groaned at the headache that appeared instantly and sat up, hand cradling her temple as she huffed.

"Eir, help me." She mumbled but when another docking shook the station her eyes opened instantly and darted towards the clock. She'd memorized the docking sequences, and this wasn't one she recognized. "Oh no." Her legs swung over the edge of the bed instantly. "No, no, no."

A quarter past 12, in the afternoon. Her heart hammered as she gathered her scattered clothes and quickly changed. She'd forgotten to put on her alarm, she realized, before she'd fallen asleep. Before he'd put her in bed, she remembered together with all the stupid things she'd said to him. When she appeared before the mirror she cursed herself in numerous languages, trying to clean off the remainders of her make up while putting her hair in a quick bun. She'd been drinking during her time here but never had it been this bad.

"Helya, take me." She mumbled as she darted towards the door, glad in her white coat as shame filled her entire being. Racing through the halls she quickly made her way to her unit where she found everyone in a haste. More than normally, at least. "What... what is going on?" Those green eyes followed the numerous beds with the clones in them as they were transported, all the nurses darting around with equipment in their hands.

"What in hell..." She made her way through the chaos and followed the current of people, finding out that they were taking everything and everyone off the station. There, where everything was being coordinated and brought into the awaiting ships, she found Elide watching over it all. "What is the meaning of this?" The frustration was clear in her voice as she strode towards her with large steps.

"Ah, doctor, you made it." Those gentle eyes glided over her figure. "Master Kenobi told me you were going to be late."

"Explain, now."

"Didn't master Kenobi tell you?" There was clear confusement in her brown eyes. "We're moving the station down to the base on the planet Adrena." She followed another patient as he passed, groaning softly in the bed. "The master ordered it this morning, said that he needed us close for his men's safety now that they're advancing on the battlefield."

Adrena. The Valerian groaned mentally. The exact planet where the spice king, the patient from the day before came from, the exact planet where the sith lord would be to further his plans. The chances of meeting him again were growing exponentially. Even worse so if he found out who exactly she was, and who was coming with her. Her headache worsened remarkably to the point she could feel her head pounding.

"To be honest, I'm glad. The pirate's attack left me fearing for our safety." The nurse continued as she surveyed the moving, unaware of the obvious agony the woman beside her was in.

"Oh, you have no idea." Lyanna mumbled in defeat as her shoulders sagged, her fingers rubbing her temple as she scrunched her eyes shut. Maybe this was it, the final reason to tell him.

"Doctor!" Then came another particular voice she didn't want to hear that made her rethink her latest thought. Her cheeks reddened fiercely as she slowly turned around to face him, suddenly aware of the utter mess her hair was. Not to mention the mess she had been the night before. "You're up early." Then came that dashing smile that left her stomach in impossible knots.

"Don't..." She put up her hand, closing her eyes as she let out a deep breath. "Please don't mention it." She added with reluctance.

A knowing smile appeared on Obi's lips. "We've all had bad days, doctor." He came to stand beside her to oversee the chaos and listened as she let out a loud huff, following the head nurse with his gaze as she disappeared into the chaos.

"I suppose this was all your idea?" Lyanna grumbled.

"What better way to keep both the clones and our medical staff safe?" The jedi answered as he watched the commotion with a satisfied smile.

"And it has nothing to do with keeping an eye on me?" The tensing of his shoulders was answer enough as she glared aside. A coldness settled into her heart. "I don't need your supervision, jedi."

A scowl appeared on his face the moment she spit out the last word. Gone was the warm smile, the calm posture. Instead, clear anger now shot through his eyes. "The state of you suggests otherwise." He pointedly stared at the wounds on her limbs, then to the bags under her eyes and saw her fists clenching as a result. "You wanted to get off this station, so forgive me for indulging you." Obi Wan continued when no response was given. "I can always send you to another one more to your liking, in the outer rim, perhaps. I'm sure master Windu could use your help."

At that she shot another glare his way, one he could feel burning the side of his face. "Just don't get into my way." She growled and folded her arms before her chest, eyes darkening even further. "I would hate to ruin your pretty face permanently."

He looked her way, studying her and ignoring the furious hammering of his heart. The dark circles under her eyes and the mess of her hair were nothing new, but he swore he saw a slither of darkness twining through the green of her irises. It made his blood freeze over. "What happened to 'I don't deserve you'?"

She pulled up her lip in a snarl but refused to look at him. "I sobered up."

"Right." Obi Wan let out a deep breath, eyes focussed on the figures passing them. "Then I suppose you won't tell me what you were planning to, either?"

The Valerian let out a soft humourless chuckle before she went after one of the patients, sparing him a glance over the shoulder before she disappeared. "I have no idea what you're talking about." The sidious smile on her face told the exact opposite.

Obi Wan groaned in frustration, fingers tangled in his beard as he closed his eyes to settle his thoughts. He'd been so close to breaking through her walls, but in his best intentions had snapped them right back up. Now, he had to deal with the unpredictable woman she'd become for weeks to come.

He had no idea what he was getting himself into.

~

Green. That's all that rang through her head as the shuttle finally settled on the ground. There was green here. She was almost jumping in excitement as they opened the baydoors. She didn't mind the glances some of the personnel shot her, the jedi included. Not when she spotted the life outside, when she could almost taste the nature she had missed so dearly.

The moment she could she sprinted out of the ship and into the open air, halting almost immediately and realized; it wasn't the green she had missed. "By the gods, thank you." She mumbled in bliss as she basked in the sunlight, feeling the warmth on her skin, those gentle rays illuminating every single freckle on her face. She didn't even realize her skin glowed in response, tiny flames dancing over it and her hair coming alive in orange and red colours, waving through the wind.

No, she could only feel its warmth, the safety, the life it gave. It filled up that empty void that'd resided in her these past few months, filled it with warmth and safety and passion. She didn't care about the people passing her, giving her weathered and frightened glances as they saw the evident magic flaming in her eyes. She didn't care that she'd spilled the secret she'd been keeping for so long.

She could only relish in that unending power that radiated down on her. "Mmh." She hummed and closed her eyes, sighing in contentment as her senses came alive.

"Doctor?" That usual warm voice was now filled with both fear and anxiety.

"Yes, Elide?" She didn't bother to stiffen the flames.

"We might need your help relocating the patients." She coughed. "When you're done... burning, that is."

"I'll be right there." Lyanna mumbled. "Just give me a moment." She heard her footsteps disappearing after and opened her eyes, taking in the base the jedi had set up. It wasn't bad. They'd used a ruin and built a hospital around it, together with the base they would be operating from. Numerous clones already ran around barking orders while ships landed all around them and weapons were being distributed.

It wasn't an unfamiliar sight to the queen, not when her planet had always been busy with warmongering. She let her eyes drift to the forests that surrounded them. A cold planet, she realized, was what they were now inhabiting. The pine trees hovered till far above her and its branches wove through the icy wind. Even though the wind would freeze her skin she couldn't wait to fly over those vast forests and mountains, feel it waving through her hair.

"Don't fly off just yet, princess." The excitement almost disappeared from her completely.

"It's doctor, now."

"We have to try to keep your presence here a secret before the Seperatists declare war on Valeria, too." Obi Wan clarified from behind her, ignoring her interruption.

Lyanna let out a deep breath, nodding in acknowledgement. It was something they'd discussed the day after she'd offered herself up for the war. They agreed that anything she'd do for the Republic, she'd do it anonymously before her own planet would be dragged into it too. It meant not using her powers in major battles either, at least for the time being.

In any case, her eyes still drifted to the blue skies in anticipation. "Taking the fun out of everything, as usual, Kenobi."

The jedi beside her snorted and shook his head. "Sometimes I forget how much you and Anakin are alike." His voice was warmer. The doctor tried to keep her face straight as he focused on her, those eyes scanning her face for any reaction before slowly walking away. "Try not to wake anyone when you disappear tonight and please, don't scare any of the local inhabitants into thinking they now have a massive bird in their forest."

She couldn't help the small smile that appeared on her face as she watched him leave.

Weeks passed. Even though the routine was much the same as before on the medical station, Lyanna came alive. Maybe it was the change of scenery, maybe it was the sunlight that now fed her with life and warmth or the smells and sounds of the forests surrounding them. The patients hadn't changed, that much was sure. She still spend her days healing the clones that got hurt on the battlefield, guided by the sarcastic remarks of a certain ancient Valerian as she operated.

What was different was the fact that she could now escape into the forest before dawn. She'd found a perfect spot about half a mile from base, with a small lake and a clearing much like the one back on Valeria. It teemed with life; small creatures that fed on the pond, the fish dancing around in the crystal-clear water and the birds chirping early in the morning.

Each time she would come and perform the usual training routine she'd learned when she was on her home planet. It was a series of physical moves in the beginning meant to strengthen her muscles, but as the routine progressed it became more and more about the use of Seidr, or the force as the jedi called it. She'd guide her flames into beautiful streams of red and orange, forming shapes in careful and controlled movements.

Occasionally, when he deemed her worthy of his presence, even Arthas would perform the exact same moves beside her. Working with her, following her moves as if it was a dance he knew all too well. He would usually be silent, but the result of their working together were those white-hot blue flames dancing in the dark. His company was soothing in a way but in another it urged her to work harder, to show him exactly how she'd been able to defeat him and how she would defeat Maul, too.

Every time she performed she could feel the numerous gazes of the animals focused on her, the way they watched with utmost attention as that flickering magic filled the clearing. She hadn't been caught by anyone else, or at least so she thought. When the jedi wasn't off on his mission he'd sometimes watch her work, see the controlled movements she was making and her gentle concentration as she did so.

Even though the blue flames scared him every time she used them, the fact that she was conjuring them while still in control settled his thoughts. But he couldn't see her companion, didn't know who exactly enabled her to conjure such powerful magic because she never told him. She'd never told him about the other sith lord, either.

In the end, they hadn't talked much at all. They'd tried their best to avoid each other as much as possible. They weren't fighting but they weren't on even terms either. Each time they spoke it would end with some snide remark or a curse, sometimes even with a threat of breaking more noses. Something had come between them and it wasn't healing.

Little did the jedi know that it was his nemesis. The fact that she was still keeping that secret kept her from ever getting close to him again, because each time they spoke she was reminded of the simple truth that she was holding that secret. The secret that would break his heart when he found out and would drive them apart again. Drive her away from the planet she'd grown fond of.

So, there was no use in growing close. Both their hearts ached at that knowledge but neither was ready to take the step to mend it.

Especially not the doctor. She sighed deeply as she stared out over the landscape, sitting on a veranda overlooking the forest for miles and miles. She was covered in a warm blanket, missing the gentle warmth of a hot drink. But the view was enough. It reminded her of the mesmerizing, but dangerous wilds of her home planet. Sitting there, it almost seemed as if she was back. As if Aidan could walk through that door and tell her about the dreadful council meeting he'd just attended.

Sadly, he couldn't, for he was further away than ever.

Lyanna bit her lip. That day had been one of the busiest for weeks. The jedi had returned from yet another mission from a planet close by and had recovered it from the separatists. It meant a lot more wounded clones, and a lot more infected ones that had been neglected for days.

Sleep was tearing at her but she needed to clear her head before venturing off to bed. So, she laid her head against the stone pillar behind her and watched the sun disappearing behind the mountains, a book discarded beside her. The gentle light glowed on her skin once more and she let it fill her with life as she closed her eyes.

She didn't notice the jedi that had appeared in the doorway, watching the serenity on her face, the calmness. He hadn't seen her like that for weeks. Hadn't even seen that smile for even more so. He took a moment to take it in, to see how she had healed in those weeks, how her limbs weren't as thin and broken anymore and how her ribs weren't showing through her skin.

No matter how long he waited, he knew he couldn't get enough of it. "It's a beautiful planet, isn't it?" He decided to break the silence and ventured from his spot on the threshold. His hands grasped the mugs filled with steaming tea a bit tighter as he walked towards her, seeing her green eyes glide to his in surprise.

"It is." She sat up against the pillar, watching him with wary and tired eyes as he handed her the mug. She bent down after she'd grasped it, sniffing at the warm liquid. "Mint with honey." A smile appeared on her lips as she then took a gentle sip and found it to be the perfect temperature. "My favourite." She watched as the jedi sat down on the opposite of her, leaning against the stone and letting his gaze venture out over the landscape. "How did you know?"

"Lucky guess." Obi Wan smiled and then grimaced, feeling the sting of some of the bruises that now bloomed on his chest. He saw the Valerian flinching, her hands darting towards him as if to try and help but quickly retracting them too. He sighed. This was the longest they'd gone without insulting each other for weeks, he couldn't expect her to care enough to help now.

"How did it go?" At least she cared enough to ask.

"Well enough." Obi Wan set down his mug on his side, glancing at her and studying her features.

She noticed the attention, brows furrowing. "What is it?"

He couldn't help the tug at his heart at the sight of her. Her red hair bound loosely with strands hanging before her eyes, her body huddled under a thick wool blanket and her tiny hands wrapped closely around the mug with her rosy lips pursed as she blew gently to cool the drink. Nobody would even think she was some warrior queen that could burn down entire cities.

"I, uhm." Obi Wan coughed awkwardly, diverting his eyes back to the landscape, trying to ignore the urge to dart towards her and claim her lips for himself. "I came to ask something of you."

"What is it?" Curiosity was laced through her voice but wariness was there, too. The jedi feared she'd noticed his lingering gaze on her lips.

He gathered himself together again before facing her. "I need your help on my next mission here, on Adrena." Oh, he would need to meditate for hours.

Her eyes widened with what could've been both fear and excitement. "My help?" She frowned then. "I thought I wasn't supposed to fight."

"We're not going to fight, exactly." Obi Wan bit his lip as he watched her, dread filling him. "I'm going to need you for an undercover mission."

She set aside her mug too and leaned forward, eyes staring into his. His body tensed at the proximity as his mind went into complete chaos, noting the golden spots in her green eyes. "And?" He couldn't help glancing down at her lips as she formed the word.

He ignored the fear that was making his heart pound. He especially ignored the fact that it wasn't only fear that was doing so as he forced his gaze towards those lively green eyes. "Would you like to go to a ball with me?"

Hiya.

I was wondering something; do you guys prefer 3rd person or 1st as a writing style? I've noticed that I frequently alter between the two, but never stopped to wonder which one you guys like more.

Let me know!

Also, hot scene coming up next chapter, get ready ;)
