Chapter 29: Old grudges
"Who are you?"
At the sound of Maul's next footstep, I immediately duck from my hiding spot, jumping over the cabinet and right on top of him. He had no time to even realise what was happening before I tackled him to the ground. The only sound I heard was his loud, surprised snarl and then the thumping of our bodies as we fell over. Within seconds I had my knees pinning his arms down beside him on the floor, scalpel to his throat as I hissed. "I'm the doctor, and this is my hospital."
Somewhere in the process I had lost the hat, my red hair now falling out of the braid and onto his face as those sith eyes glared up at me, a growl erupting from deep within his throat. "You made a mistake coming here, sith." I continued, savouring the moment before I moved my hand to slit his throat, all the pent-up anger finally having the chance to lash out.
This is for Satine.
He stopped me before I could. He used his metallic limbs and kicked up, startling me as a sharp pain now came from my left leg, then used the surprise to pull his hands from my tight grip and throw me over.
Before he had the chance to pin me down I darted away, rolling over till I was on my one knee, leaning on another hand while the other held the scalpel before me. "No, no." He spoke slowly as he stood up, not even making a move to strike as his eyes studied me and a chuckle followed. "There's something... more." Maul took one step towards me as I froze.
I only snarled in response and attacked, lashing out and making another move for his throat with the razor-sharp knife in my hand. He dodged the attack easily by jumping to the side, his eyes never leaving mine as I continued my assaults. Blocking, parrying, dodging, he seemed to slide away from every attack I made without breaking a sweat.
At my 10th attempt he simply caught my wrist mid-air and held it in a devastating grip as he stepped closer. "You are trained." As he spoke deeply a shiver went up my spine. I tried wrenching my arm free, but he only gripped it tighter and backed my up against the cabinet. "Tell me, -" He leaned so closely I could decipher every hint of yellow and orange in his eyes, making my breath hitch in my throat. "what are you?"
"Someone who's going to stop you." I hissed in response and kicked him in the stomach, sending him doubling over and loosening the grip on my hand. Grasping the closest object I could find; I hurtled a stack of testing tubes towards him and watched them shatter around him.
With the fury building in me I unleashed hell. Kicks, punches and slashes, you name it and I gave it to him. Some of his attempts to dodge failed and soon blood was running down his dark skin, his snarl deepening with each attack. "Enough!" He balked when I had cornered him and unleashed a surge of power, throwing me back against one of the tables. My spine seemed to crack, my vision going blurry with it.
I ended up rolling over the table and falling to the floor amidst the shards, groaning as some embedded themselves into my limbs and my head hit the wall. OR clothes weren't the best of armor, I realized, as I glanced up at his approaching figure with a blurred vision and blood running down my skin. Before I could dart away from his hands, he grasped the back of my shirt and lifted me in the air before him.
"Why are you here?" Maul continued, the curiosity in him overpowering the anger. He studied me closely, top to bottom. Somehow, I realized, he must have figured out I wasn't a normal doctor.
"That's none of your damn business." I growled, lashing out with the other hand than he'd expected me to and found out I was holding a shard of glass which I embedded in his torso right next to his heart.
His only response was to throw me away against the closets a few feet back, more glass shattering around me as I fell to the floor afterwards. Through my blurred vision, I could barely make out him pulling out the shard and throwing it away. "Such hatred, such determination." Maul cautiously walked towards me as I struggled to stand back up, his sinister chuckle filling the silence. "Tell me, do we know each other?"
My eyes glared up at him as he came near but then glanced down, spotting the dual bladed lightsaber hanging on his belt. He hadn't even felt the need to use it. That, he will regret. I jumped forward and duck under his arms as he tried to grasp me, slipping underneath him and yanking the saber loose as I slid past.
Then, I spun around, facing him once again on the other side and igniting the blade. A jolt went through me as the red grew, the saber almost burning my palm as my head chanted no, no, no! It felt wrong in every way, especially when his grin grew at the sight. "Yes, yes! Use your anger." Maul snarled and practically laughed as I attacked him again.
It was in vain. I was unbalanced, unprepared. Months of no training and long days of work had left me weakened, the headache and blurry tears making it even more difficult. Most of all, that lightsaber seemed to work against me. Before I knew it he'd knocked the blade out of my hands and had his hand wrapped around my throat, pushing me against the glass wall adjacent to the hallway.
At first I'd tried to summon the flames as a reflex, sparks igniting around my fingers, but then glanced up at the metal work of the ceiling. Tubes filled with fuel, oxygen. If I did that, I'd risk the lives of countless patients. "Look at me!" Maul growled and tightened his grip, leaving me gasping for air. And I did, finding such malicious intent in his eyes that I was left shivering under his gaze. "I will enjoy breaking you, but first, -"
He lifted his own lightsaber to the side of my face. I felt its warmth on my skin, heard the electricity buzzing in my ear. I struggled against his hold, legs dangling in the air. "tell me, why are you so intent on killing me?" The grin that followed had me seething in anger.
"You hurt a friend of mine." I answered, watching the amusement spread through his eyes. "And you will pay for it." My hand gripped the knife tightly not to stab him, but the glass behind me. It shattered into a billion pieces and had me falling backwards and out of his reach, out of his grip.
I ended up in the hallway on my back, shards leaving deep slashes in my flesh but I struggled to my feet anyway, darting to the end of the hallway and to the end of this section of the ship. I could feel the blood running down my legs and arms, the muscles that screamed in agony but pushed through, nevertheless.
A loud clang sounded through the hall as he jumped over the remainder of the wall, and then a whooshing sound came as he threw his lightsaber in my direction. I ducked, catching it mid-air and throwing it back towards him.
Maul growled out as it slashed his upper arm after not fully dodging, lifting his hand to no doubt use the force. When the glass shards around him started to rise my eyes widened and my heart seemed to stop. With another wave those tiny daggers shot right for me and I had no choice but to fall on the floor and form myself into a ball, back turned towards the incoming attack.
Holding my breath, I waited for those shards to bury themselves in my now exposed skin. Seconds ticked by which felt like an eternity, but nothing happened. The only thing that followed was a frustrated growl from behind me and when I opened my eyes, I could see shadows dancing over the floor.
Arthas.
There was no time to process it, not before Maul would try another trick to keep me back. I was right, I regretfully realized, as I felt a pull on my entire body dragging me towards him. Invisible hands grasped around my ancles and pulled. "No!" I yelped desperately. "Let me go!" My feet slipped on the metal ground, squeaking as I struggled to move forward. Just a few more feet, come on!
He pulled harder and turned me around, laughing as I struggled against the iron grip. "There's nowhere to hide, doctor." Maul chuckled manically as he walked towards me, palm outstretched.
Another loud clang sounded through the entire ship but he didn't even flinch until but a few seconds later. The grip he had on me suddenly disappeared, causing me to fall over at the lack of resistance. My already aching head banged against the floor, erupting a groan from my throat.
My feet were pushing me further before I even gave the command. As I crawled backwards and away from him, I watched the shocked expression take over his face. "I can feel him." He murmured, frozen in place. "No, not now." Maul added softly, first afraid but then his face turned into pure malice. "You're coming with me."
As Maul recovered and stomped towards me with newfound determination, I tumbled to my feet and ran for my dear life. Turning around swiftly, I swung my last weapon towards him and watched him duck and glance at the knife as it passed him. That momentarily distraction I used to reach the panel, slamming onto the big red button that would detach the section off the ship.
A loud booming followed, together with a force shield that activated right between us. Maul flinched back, his fingers almost getting caught in the power now vibrating between us.
"Gods." I sighed deeply, sacking to the ground and leaning my head against the wall as I breathed out deeply in relief. "That was... close." When deep, furious snarling came from the other side I merely glanced aside, watching as Maul punched the shield now in place.
"Can't say it was nice meeting you, Maul." I held his gaze, not even looking at the countless wounds I'd obtained that had blood running down my limbs. My head was throbbing and nausea was close to overpowering me. A concussion too, then.
I hissed as my hand reached out to my pocket, pulling out the disk and the report I'd yet finished. "Looking for this?" Dangling it in my hand before him, I watched as his expression changed from chock back to pure anger. The mechanism continued to detach the section and the ground beneath us trembled, till it completely shook as his part started to float away. More and more empty space started to separate us.
"I didn't take you for the person who takes an interest in spice mining." I chuckled softly as I let my arm fall back down, groaning when every moment caused shots of pain. "But everybody has his hobbies, right?"
Maul punched the shield again, a growling voice following. "We will meet again." He ignited the lightsaber at his side as his eyes flared.
I took my time to struggle back to my feet, huffing and groaning with each move I made. All the while his eyes remained on me, even as we drifted further and further apart. "We better." Chuckling softly, I leaned on my knees, gathering my breath as I glanced at him. "So I can kill you."
His snarl deepened, eyes narrowing as his hands clenched into fists. "Goodbye, Maul!" I yelled as I waved, knowing I was only infuriating him further. Gods, I didn't even care. My body, however, succumbed to the movement. It was too much, too soon, especially with this much blood loss. My limbs trembled and I fell backwards, against the wall and down to the cold floor.
"For Thor's sake." Mumbling, I tried my best to keep my eyes open as stars covered my vision. Through my blurred eyes I could see him drifting further away but when voices came from the other side I turned towards the sound. Figures dressed in a familiar blue, that voice...
"Lyanna!" Elide shouted and ran for my side. Before I knew it she was checking all my breathing and pulse, calling help as she did so and telling them to hurry. Her delicate hands pressed on the biggest wounds as she then whispered soothingly. "You're going to be alright, doc."
I was supposed to be relieved. Yet, there was that one thing on my mind that kept repeating itself.
Please, don't let him have heard my name.
