Chapter 2: Test
I stood behind the crowd of potential students and scanned the room for anything out of the ordinary, but found nothing besides a girl in red being yelled at by Weiss Schnee.
Me: 'Definitely gotta steer clear of her.'
I sighed and started to look around for different routes out of the room and building just for insurance, then I looked up at the rafters. I looked around to be sure no one would notice, then closed my eyes. And turned my body into smoke and moved up the wall and to the rafters. I then sat on the rafters and looked below to make sure on one saw. I was in the clear. I've always hated large crowds. Soon Ozpin came on stage and gave a very... Inspirational speech.
Me: 'How did he become a professor?'
A blonde, who looked to be Ozpin's assistant, came up to the mic and told everyone where'd they'd be sleeping. I looked down at Ozpin and saw that he was looking straight at me. I waved and he smiled then nodded back. Once everyone cleared out I turned into smoke and drifted down to the ground. I solidified and walked towards the direction the crowd went in. After awhile we came to large open area. People started to set up sleeping bags and such. I moved around the crowd and found a spot all the way against the back wall. I sat against the wall so that I had a perfect view of the doors, windows, and people of the room. I scanned the room for anything of interest but only found Blake, who was reading. I sighed as thought over what I was doing.
Me: 'Staying here is in my best interest. But I doubt I'll be here for long. I won't fit in, plus I'm sure someone higher up will come to arrest me, probably Ironwood, doubt he's gotten over the whole arm thing.'
I then closed my eyes. Of course I didn't sleep a wink, I haven't done that in a long time.
[Time Skip, Morning]
I looked out the window as the sun began to rise. I slowly got up and made my way to the exit of the building. I remember hearing something about a dinning hall, so I decided to head there. Once I arrived I saw the place was barren and the staff had barely been able to get anything ready. As they set up different things in the kitchen I snuck over and grabbed a decent sized portion of bread then walked out unnoticed. I walked through the halls getting a good layout of the place while occasionally lifting my mask up slightly and taking a bite out of the bread I "borrowed." It was nice and fresh, which made it better then most meals I've had. I normally only stole food on my way to or from a job which meant I've never had a cooked meal, mostly anything that's displayed in the window of a shop or in a stall at a market. As I walked I noticed how many rooms this school had. And most weren't even related to combat. I looked to my right as I walked and saw that I was passing a music room.
Me: 'Why would a combat school need a music room?'
I looked in through the glass window on the door and spotted a very nice grand piano.
Me: 'Haven't seen one of those in a while.'
I put the bread in my mouth, holding it there, and pulled out one of my throwing knives and picked the lock. I placed my knife back in its holder and entered the room, making sure to close the door behind me. I walked over to the piano and ran my finger across the fall-bored (The thing that covers the keyboard) then lifted it up. As an assassin you learn a lot of skills, some seemingly non-related, that help your jobs go much easier. Such as, disguising yourself as a musician and waiting for the opportunity to strike. Of course I only needed the skill once, I found myself wanting to learn how to play the piano even after the job. For some reason I found the sound it made soothing. I pulled out the bench and sat down. I traced my hands down the keys and began to press a note, but stopped when I heard the door open. I looked over and saw Ozpin.
Ozpin: "You know you don't have to sneak around and steal right?"
He motioned to the bread I still had in my mouth. I bit into the bread and held it in my hand then pushed my mask back down.
Me: "Force of habit I guess."
I closed the piano and stood up.
Ozpin: "I think you'll enjoy your time here."
Me: "I still say this is gonna backfire on you. I have no experience with Grimm. I'm not cut out for school, I've never even been to a school."
Ozpin: "You've had no prior education?"
Me: "Nope. I've had the cliché backstory of an assassin. Orphaned, stolen, sold, enslaved."
Ozpin: "How old are you exactly?"
[Character Development Time!!!]
Me: "Seventeen. I was an orphan since I can remember, I was bounced around from one orphanage to the next, at the age of ten the orphanage I was currently at was burnt down and the caretakers murdered. The children however were taken and sold around the underground market. At the age of twelve I was sold to a man and his family as one of three slaves. I was the unlucky one and was set to work as a groundskeeper. Needless to say even out of the three that were sold to him I was still the lower one. The other two were working inside the house which meant they at least got proper sheltering and were able to shower. I lived in a shed and had to bathe in a river around half a mile away. At the age of fifteen I had enough of the endless labor and abuse and killed him. Unfortunately things didn't go smoothly as his family was rather upset, so they died too. Then even the other two slaves tried to get in my way, so I'm sure you know what happened to them. After that I ran and started my way to becoming what I am now. So, Still want me to attend your school?"
I smirked under my mask knowing that this would certainly-
Ozpin: "Of course. I'd love to be the one to turn you around."
I paused for a second then chuckled.
Me: "You are a interesting person Ozpin."
Ozpin: "So I've been told. Now, you best hurry and get ready, the entrance exam will be starting soon."
Me: "Why again do I have to take that? You know what I can do already."
Ozpin: "Simply a formality. Also it gives you a chance to be acquainted with some students and have some practice with Grimm."
Me: "Guess that's a good idea."
[Time Skip, Start of the Test]
I stood on the platform and thought over my objectives.
Me: 'First, my landing strategy, then I make my way to the temple, on the way if I spot someone I suppose I should team up, however if I don't think it's a good idea in the moment, move on, second grab an artifact and head back. Easy.'
As I thought people began to be launched. Once the person to my left launched I got ready. I heard the spring beneath me release and I was sent into the air. As I flew I looked around and saw different people skillfully landing on trees or using something to slow themselves down. I waited until I was nearly inches from the ground and turned into smoke. I slid across the ground and began to solidify while still moving forward. I kept moving forward for awhile longer until I came to a large clearing. It was empty so I started walking across. Once I got to the middle of the clearing I heard leaves rustling and quite a few sets of feet running. I looked to the sound and saw a boy around my age with long white hair that was shaved on one side come running into the clearing and stop in front of me. I took this time to notice his appearance. Along with the white hair he had grey eyes, from the one visible ear I could see it was gauged. He was dressed in a black long sleeve with jeans. On his side was a black sheathed katana, while the handle was red. We made eye contact, well I made eye contact, he most likely was staring at my mask.
???: "U-uh... C-could you... Help.. Me?"
Me: "With what?"
I looked behind him to see a pack of Beowulves running into the clearing. I sighed.
Me: 'Well I needed to practice anyway.'
I drew my sword and pressed the button on the handle which made the blade break apart into segments and form a whip which I let lay on the ground.
Me: "You want to help?"
He nodded and drew his sword, which had a crimson blade. I charged forward and lined myself up with the first Beowulf then swung my sword downward slicing clean through it.
Me: 'A lot slower then I thought they'd be.'
I swung my sword left and sliced through two more. I then released the button on the handle of my sword and watched as it formed back into a single blade. I looked over to check on my new companion and saw that he was fighting pretty well, however I could tell he has trouble with groups, he was currently facing of with one Beowulf straight ahead while another was trying to circle around his left, his eyes were repeatedly shooting from one to the other as if trying to figure out which one to attack. I reached into my cloak and pulled out a throwing knife and lined up the Beowulf trying to flank him. I raised my hand and in one smooth motion I sent the knife flying into the Beowulf's head and watched it drop. With his distraction out of the way he quickly dispatched the other Beowulf. I walked up to the Beowulf my knife was in and pulled out my knife. It had black dust-like powder on it so I whipped it off on the Beowulfs fur. I put the knife back in it's holster and turned to the unnamed student.
Me: "What's your name?"
Alex: "I-It's A-Alex."
Me: "You can call me Reaper for now. Looks like we're partners. Let's go."
I started walking towards the end of the clearing I was originally headed towards.
[Time Skip, Five Minutes]
As we walked it was completely silent. Even I found this a bit awkward. I sighed and tried to start a conversation.
Me: "So, tell me about yourself. Seeing as we may be partners for the next four years."
Alex: "W-Well, my name is Alex White. I'm seventeen, my semblance is Time Perception, it allows me to change the way I perceive time. Meaning I c-can see m-my opponents in s-slow motion."
Me: "Sounds pretty useful. But why can't you take on multiple opponents then?"
Alex: "W-Well, I g-get nervous."
Me: "I see that."
Alex: "S-Sorry..."
I stopped in my tracks and looked at him.
Me: "Alright, if we're gonna be partners I need you to try and not be so shy. It could get in the way of the jo- the objective of the test. Okay?"
He nodded.
Me: "Good."
Alex: "So... What's your semblance?"
Me: "Hey, you didn't stutter, good. My semblance is the ability to conjure and control smoke. Additionally I'm able to turn my body into smoke. I can also make solid objects out of the smoke but they only last around thirty seconds and take a lot of concentration."
We started walking again.
Alex: "That's... Pretty cool."
We walked a little longer until we finally reached the ruins. Although it wasn't what I was expecting. I saw the girl in red about to be attacked by a Deathstalker but stopped by Weiss Schnee, then I looked up to see a Nevermore circling around. I leaned over to Alex.
Me: "Is this normal for huntsmen and huntresses?"
He shrugged.
Me: "Well let's go get a relic and get the hell outta here."
We started running to the ruins. Alex grabbed a piece that I didn't exactly see, then I turned and went to move in the other direction.
Alex: "W-What about them...?"
I looked over to see a blonde girl with Blake, a blonde knight with, who I believe to be, Pyrrha Nikos, and then a ginger haired girl and a guy with long black hair. They seemed panicked.
Me: "Not really our problem. If their smart they'll run."
Alex: "O-Oh... Okay..."
He seemed sad but honestly I couldnt care less right now. We started running in the opposite direction, where we soon came across a structure that was attached to a cliff where the only way across was a stone bridge.
Me: "Come on, we can climb up the cliff from there."
I pointed to the top of the structure and Alex nodded. Suddenly I heard running and turned to see the previous group running from the Nevermore. I sighed.
Me: "You wanted to help them, right Alex?"
Alex: "Y-Yeah."
Me: "Alright. Let's do it then."
I ran forward and to the group where I then changed direction and ran with them.
Me: "You guys head up the tower and take care of the Nevermore, me and my partner will take care of that."
I pointed back to the DeathStalker which had burst through the trees.
Blake: "You?!"
Me: "Oh hey there kitty cat."
I stopped and turned towards the DeathStalker.
Me: "Alex!"
Alex came running over.
Alex: "Yeah?"
Me: "We're gonna take care of the DeathStalker, think you can handle that?"
Alex: "I-I'll try my best."
He drew his sword and I followed in suit.
Me: 'Look at me. Trying to be a hero.'
I charged the creature. It in turn swung it's right claw at me. I used my sword and blocked it, it then swung it's left one at me next. Alex came in and blocked the left claw, I then pushed the right claw back and hit the left claw back for Alex who then stabbed down ward into the DeathStalker's head. However it didn't seem strong enough to kill it. The sword was imbedded in the skull of the Grimm. It went to hit Alex away but I moved forward and blocked it's claw. I slid back into Alex which made us both fall back a bit. I caught myself and sized up the Grimm once more. I smiled under my mask knowing exactly what to do.
Me: "Alex, hold this."
I handed him my sword and started moving forward.
Alex: "Wait! What are you going to do?"
Me: "Something fun."
I broke into a full sprint towards the creature. As expected it raised its tail to try and stab me. I waited until the stinger was nearly touching my clothes before turning into smoke and spiraling around its tail and following it to the body of the DeathStalker. I solidified and landed on its head where I grabbed onto Alex's sword. I started summoning more and more smoke around my body to where I was almost barely visible. I then channeled all the smoke and started pouring it into the sword where it entered the Grimm's body. I pulled Alex's sword out of the creature and jumped off then ran to Alex. I handed him his sword and took mine back.
Me: "Watch this."
I raised my fist and waited a moment. As the DeathStalker charged I quickly opened my hand making the Grimm explode in a ball of smoke and black dust. I smiled.
Me: "Well that was awesome."
I looked over and saw Alex was looking behind us.
Me: "What, too brutal?"
I looked where he was looking and saw a headless Nevermore falling to the ground and the girl in red standing atop the cliff, rose petals seemed to be blowing in the wind.
Me: "I feel like I should have been watching that... Because that's pretty damn awesome."
