Spencer Reid x Reader - Arguments and Heartache
This has never happened before: for the first time, Dr. Spencer Reid was unable to focus on a case.
As soon as they boarded the plane, the team knew that Spencer was not focused. Every time they tried to talk to him, they had to repeat themselves over and over again just to get his attention. It seemed like they were continually pulling him out of another world.
It only got worse as Hotch began briefing the team on the case. No matter how many times the members called his name, Spencer could not pay attention for longer than two or three minutes. He just couldn't listen to the gruesome stories of several women that went missing only to be found days later in several pieces at the moment.
He wasn't trying to be rude or disobedient. Spencer was desperately trying to listen for any critical information that the others wouldn't notice, knowing that it was the small things like that that usually allowed them to crack brutal cases like this one. Still, his mind always went back to you.
You were Spencer's girlfriend of six months. The two of you shared an excellent relationship from the very first day you met. You clicked in ways neither of you thought possible: you made Spencer happy in ways that he thought only existed in children's fairy tales. Your relationship sparked so beautifully so quickly that you moved into Spencer's apartment a month ago.
Your relationship was something the team just couldn't get enough of; they were constantly teasing Spencer about his lovey-dovey plans with you. They were disappointed that they didn't get to see you more often - you were one of the best trauma surgeons at Sibley Memorial Hospital and found yourself always being called into work. Still, Spencer gave them plenty of material to taunt and tease without you being around.
Today, however, things weren't so great.
The night before, Spencer had been on edge; he surprised you at work with dinner he made since he knew you weren't supposed to get off until midnight. When he got there, though, he found one of the new interns hitting on you, offering to take you out to dinner after the shift ended. Despite you quickly shutting down the younger male, Spencer was still worried.
Spencer announced his presence soon after the man left, bringing you company as you sat alone at your computer while you entered some charges.
As soon as you saw Spencer, you perked up, your tired eyes shining with love and adoration. A cocky smirk formed on Spencer's face as he realized that no other man could affect you the way he did.
He mentioned seeing the flirty intern, but you quickly waved it off. It wasn't something that the FBI agent needed to worry about; he was the only man who had your heart.
By the time Spencer got home, all was well. He was no longer worried about what he had seen when he entered the hospital, instead drifting off into thoughts about what a wonderful girlfriend you were and how lucky he was to have you in his life.
But before he knew it, it was well past midnight, and you still hadn't come home.
At first, Spencer figured that an emergency had occurred, forcing you to stay later at the hospital without having a chance to update him on the situation. The longer he went without hearing from you, though, the more he worried that something terrible had happened to you on your way home.
Finally, at three in the morning, Spencer received a single text from you.
(Y/N): Hey, babe. I'm on my way home from the bar now. The girls and I lost track of time. I'm sorry, baby!
Spencer was furious.
He couldn't believe that he stayed up all night worrying about you when you were out at some bar, having fun with your friends. For the last hour, he had been debating on whether or not to call Garcia and have her track your phone's location.
But that wasn't the worst part. As he continued to think about the situation, Spencer remembered the flirty intern that asked to take you on a date earlier.
Were you out on a date with him?
The horrible thought gnawed at him until you walked through the front door, his stomach twisted in knots and heart hammering in his chest. He hadn't had anxiety like this since he first met you. You had always calmed him down, but now, you were the source of his problems.
Amid his panic and worry, Spencer reacted horribly. Instead of calmly talking to you about it like a rational human being, he began accusing you, hurling horrid insults and improbable circumstances before you could even greet him and ask why he was still awake.
You had warned him before you even started dating that you could not tolerate yelling and screaming matches when you had arguments with people. You spent your entire childhood listening to and participating in loud, boisterous fights with your family; you vowed never to be in that situation ever again once you left.
As expected, you went on the defense, arguing about how ridiculous it was for him to even entertain the thought of you cheating on him. But after a long, grueling night in the emergency room, you couldn't listen to this stupidity any longer. So, with Spencer continuing to yell at you about how reckless and irresponsible you were, you quickly changed into your pajamas and brushed your teeth before crawling onto your side of the bed.
Your silence irritated Spencer further, but it did force him to stop yelling. He stayed up for a while longer yet, watching you sleep restlessly. It was evident that the fight was taking its toll on you as well, making Spencer feel guilty for his vehement reaction as he watched you toss and turn.
As he laid awake, he scrolled through his text messages with you, finding a text from the beginning of the night informing Spencer of your outing with the girls. Right below it was a picture of you with your two closest girlfriends from work: one a cardiothoracic surgeon and the other a neurosurgeon.
He should've been happy to see proof that you weren't cheating on him, but instead, it only made his stomach drop. This picture meant that he blew up at you for absolutely nothing.
Early the next morning, when the ringing of Spencer's phone woke you both up from your light slumber, you barely acknowledged the disturbance, making Spencer even sadder. Usually, you sat up with him, rubbing his back and shoulders or playing with his hair in an attempt to show him support and comfort. But instead, you turned on your other side and threw a pillow over your head to block out the noise.
Soon after, Spencer left for work, the team having to fly to California to investigate a series of missing women. You stayed asleep, not making any effort to say anything to him as he got dressed. The two of you never left in the morning without sharing a kiss and exchanging a series of "I love you's," but not this morning. Instead, Spencer left without saying anything, his heart hurting as he pulled out of the parking garage.
Now, Spencer sat on the plane, his mind focused solely on you.
With his job being as unpredictable as it is, Spencer hated that the last conversation you guys had was a stupid, pointless argument. At any moment when facing an unsub, Spencer could lose his life. Or, worse than that, a sick, creepy weirdo could kidnap you and torture you, either for his or her own twisted desires or to ruin Spencer's life as part of a fitful need for vengeance. Spencer wouldn't be able to live with himself if the last thing he said to you contained false accusations of your imaginary infidelity.
Soon, the briefing ended, and Spencer still had no idea what they were looking for in California. He was lucky to have processed even five sentences of the entire meeting.
The team dispersed with everyone moving to their own corners of the aircraft. Spencer stayed in his seat, staring absentmindedly out of the window, ignoring his bustling friends for the thousandth time today.
"Spence, are you alright?" JJ asked as she watched the distraught genius with weary eyes. However, she didn't receive an answer.
Derek watched the awkward exchange, deciding to finally intervene. He knew something was very wrong with his best friend, and he was determined to get to the bottom of it.
Before Spencer could run away, Derek pulled up a chair, cornering the upset doctor so he would be forced to focus on something other than his terrorizing thoughts.
"Alright, pretty boy," Derek began, making Spencer meet his eyes for the first time that morning, "What's going on with you? You're not yourself today."
"I'm fine; I just didn't sleep well last night," Spencer dodged, moving to get out of his chair as the half-truth quickly slipped from his lips.
JJ had been watching the scene from the coffee pot, and she knew precisely how Spencer would react to Derek's questioning. She couldn't let him just run away from this.
"Come on, Spence. We know something's wrong," JJ pressed as she stood in front of Spencer, blocking his escape route.
Spencer took a deep breath as he leaned back in his chair, his face falling into his hands as he tried to word his situation. "(Y/N) and I fought last night, and it just hasn't been sitting right with me."
"What was the fight about?" JJ asked softly, pulling her own chair up to cement her place in the conversation.
"She stayed out late last night after her shift at the hospital, and I may or may not have accused her of cheating on me with a flirty intern at her job," Spencer sighed, cringing as he voiced his situation out loud, for the first time hearing just how horrible it sounded. "We haven't talked since she got home last night, and it's really bothering me. I just don't want the last thing we said to each other to include hateful arguments."
Derek's face scrunched up as he thought about his friend's situation. "Ooh, pretty boy, that's not good. That's not good at all."
"Yeah, I know, that's why I'm so worried right now!" Spencer exploded before realizing he had overstepped. "...I'm sorry, I shouldn't yell at you. This isn't your fault."
"Okay, Spence, this is what you're going to do," JJ ordered, putting her momma bear face on, "We are going to land soon. As soon as we get off of the plane, you are going to call her and apologize for everything, and then emphasize how much you hate that things ended the way they did. You need to open the dialogue with her."
Spencer nodded, knowing that JJ's plan was better than anything he could've come up with on his own.
Soon, the plane landed, and Spencer felt his stomach tighten as he jumped up, bounding out of the aircraft before anyone else could say anything to him. Before he knew what was happening, he dialed your number and was listening to the ringing as he awaited your answer.
"Hello?" Spencer heard your soft voice ask tentatively, almost as if you were afraid to listen to what he was going to say. His heart broke at the thought; usually, your voice was bright and cheery whenever you answered, but not today.
"Baby, I am so sorry about everything that happened last night," Spencer rushed like he couldn't get the words out of his mouth fast enough. "I saw the picture you sent me after our fight. I was such an idiot, and you have every right to be mad at me, but I couldn't stand the silence. We're chasing some crazy guy here in California, and I just couldn't let the last thing I said to you be filled with petty false accusations brought on by sleep deprivation and delirium. I need you to know just how much I love and care about you, and how much I've missed holding you in my arms. You don't have to say anything back, but I just thought you should know."
For an entire second, there was nothing but silence. Spencer's heart dropped, fearing that you had already hung up the phone.
"This has been painful," you practically whimpered on the other line, "I miss you so much, baby. I don't ever want to go without talking to you or getting good morning and goodbye kisses again."
Spencer laughed, the sound breathless as if he was releasing all of his tension, "Thank goodness. I thought you'd hate me forever."
"Oh, you're still in trouble, mister," you giggled evilly, the sound tugging at Spencer's heartstrings, "but I miss you too much to fight about it now."
"I miss you more, darling," Spencer cooed, remembering the effect his nicknames had on you. "I'm going to solve this case as soon as possible so that I can get home to you quicker."
"Hey, babe?" you asked shyly, and Spencer could imagine the soft blush dusting your cheeks as you twirled a piece of hair between your thumb and index finger, a nervous tick you had that he knew well.
"Yes, love?" he replied, curious as to what you could possibly say.
"Can we snuggle when you get home?" you blushed, turning the same color as a tomato. You were just grateful that Spencer was on the other side of the country so he couldn't tease you for your embarrassment.
Suddenly, Spencer heard footsteps as the rest of the team exited the plane, soft shouts of his name echoing off of the tarmac.
"Of course we can," Spencer agreed, a broad smile tugging at his lips, "The team is looking for me, though. I have to go. Keep that bed warm for me."
"Spence, please take care of yourself while you're gone. I wouldn't mind hearing from you some more whenever you get a moment, okay?" you fretted, hating the idea of losing him when you guys just made up. "Stay safe for me."
"Anything for you," Spencer smiled, trying to stay hidden from Derek's piercing eyes so that he could enjoy your voice for a little bit longer, "I love you, dollface."
You giggled lightly at the old pet name. "I love you more than anything, Spence."
Soon, Spencer heard a woman's voice in the background followed by noises of shifting objects.
"Sorry, I have a patient. I've got to run," you apologized quickly, "I love you. See you when you get home."
With that, you hung up, leaving Spencer with the purest look of love plastered to his face. It was then, as Spencer stood out in the open, his mind focused solely on you, that Derek caught up with him. But, everything was fine, because now, Dr. Reid could get to work.
