Chapter 2: Nickel & Dimed- Case #1: Part 1

Jones and I step out of the car after parking it next to the sign. We could see a person sitting down on the other side of the sign, they looked like they were asleep. We walk closer to the sign to reveal the corpse, it was a woman. She had long blonde hair and was wearing a light blue dress with matching heels. She was bleeding from a laceration on her neck.

"Well looks like we have found the victim. We better send the body to Trevor and see what info he can gather from it." Jones speaks into his walkie talkie and tells them about the corpse.
"They will send an ambulance to come and drop off the body." I nod my head before investigating the body further.

She had a deep cut in her neck with no signs of other injuries but Trevor will be able to identify any other injuries. I look around the crime scene while Jones sets up the caution tape around the scene. I notice a ripped up piece of paper and a photo, I pick them both up before Jones taps my shoulder.

"You think those ripped up pieces will give us a lead?" I turn to Jones and hand him the ripped pieces before putting my bag down.

"It's a bit ironic to find these bits of ripped pieces near the victim don't you think?" Jones nods his head and I lay down a book and grab some sticky tape. Jones hands me the ripped up photo and it reveals our victim with a man holding her shoulder. They looked happy.

"Possible boyfriend?" I look up at Jones handing him the photo. He looks at it intently before looking down at me.

"Give me a minute." Jones hands me back the photo before going to the boot of the car and opening. I stare curiously at what he is doing before he pulls out a machine, it was about the size of a typewriter. Jones carefully placed it on the ground and turns it on. "You know what this is right?" I swear I've seen one of these.

"I'm pretty sure, don't you put the photo in it and it scans the features on face and identifies who the person is?" I look up at Jones questioningly as he puts the photo in the machine.

"You would be correct, however due to the photo being ripped up we will have to send the information to Alex. Only he will give us the identity of this person." I nod at Jones then stare at the machine, it was matching up every detail of the face. After the machine was done with the identification Jones got into the car and drove off to deliver it to Alex. The station is about 15 minutes away so he shouldn't take too long.

"Now that's done I'll start piecing this ripped up paper together." I gather the pieces and start spreading them out so I can make out the shapes. I could tell that there was some writing on the paper due to to the words and letters on it. I start piecing the paper together as it slowly forms the message in front of me. Once it was completed I read over what it says.

Felicia

"We need to talk about the event that happened at the Rosebrooke bar. Could you please meet me at the Rosebrooke entrance sign so we can talk in private."

Rosa.

I fold up the note and put it in my pocket before grabbing the walkie talkie. I push the button to make sure there is a connection. The static sound disappears and I put it to my mouth before speaking.

"Jones can you hear me?" I wait for the reply while standing at the crime scene which was blocked off by caution tape, it's a shame we had to block off the entire road but it's for a good reason. The static noise appears for a second before an incoming message comes through.

"I can hear you loud and clear Sergeant Wilson. What seems to be the problem?" I push the button again so the static appears telling me there is still connection.

"I have pieced together our other evidence, I'm going to need you here as soon as possible." I let go of the button and wait for another reply. I look around the crime scene and notice a red hand bag. I walk over to it and crouch down. This could be the victims handbag, as I'm about to search it the static startles me.

"I'll be there in about 5 minutes Sergeant Wilson. Over and out." The static goes away signalling that there is no more messages trying to be sent through. I grab the bag and start searching through it. There was a lot of items that I expected. Make up, hair brush, lip stick and lip balm, deodorant and her wallet. I grab the wallet and open it, hopefully it is our victims wallet. When I open the wallet it reveals a drivers license and another picture. I take the drivers license out and read the name. "Felicia Hawk." This is definitely our victims wallet. I put the drivers license and the photo back into the wallet and put them into pocket. I stand up and see the Jones and an ambulance heading my direction. Two paramedics hop out of the ambulance with a body bag. Jones beeps the horn at me so I walk over to him.

"Get in, they will follow us along the way." I nod my head and get into the car. I put on my seatbelt and stare out the window as Jones begins to drive away from the crime scene.

We pull up at the station with the ambulance right behind us. We get out of the car and open the door for them as they carefully get our victim out of the vehicle.

"I'll take them to Trevor, you're better off giving that evidence to Alex." I give the thumbs up to Jones before walking down to Alex's office. I knock on the door and he looks up at me and smiles.

"Oh Sergeant Wilson. What can I do for you?" Alex gestures me to come in so I walk up to his desk and carefully remove the evidence I have.

"I would like to know who this Rosa is, she wrote this to our victim and I feel like she was the last person to see her alive." I hand Alex the paper and he looks at it before opening up a file to do with all of Rosebrooke. He types in Rosa and luckily enough there was only one. Rosa Knight.

"Rosa Knight. Knight? The picture Jones sent to do with the guy also had Knight as his surname. This must be his sister." Alex looks up at me before handing me the identified persons name. Gregory Knight. I look at the name before patting Alex on shoulder.

"Tremendous work Alex." I smile at him and he shyly smiles back, he looks down and started to blush lightly again. I must ask him about that but I need to tell Jones about our two suspects. I give a little wave before leaving Alex's office. He gives a small wave back with the biggest smile on his face. I walk out of Alex's office and head to Trevor's autopsy room. I knock on the door and Jones and Trevor turn around and give me weird looks. "What? What's the matter?" I give them a confused look before Jones replies.

"You're red as a tomato, possibly redder than that if it's even possible." I walk over and look into the little mirror with a light on it and Jones was right, I was red as a tomato.

"It's just really hot, that's all." Jones and Trevor both roll their eyes. Was I blushing? I push it at the back of my mind before handing Jones the two suspects names.

"Gregory and Rosa Knight. Right I'll bring them down to the station, Trevor could you please tell Sergeant Wilson your autopsy results." Trevor nods and Jones walks out.

"So to get things started the cause of death is the laceration on your victims neck, there are no other injuries but judging by the angle and the size of the laceration I can tell you your killer is right handed. Also I did find some skin cells under the victims fingernails, this means your killer must have scratches somewhere on them." I write the main clues down to identify our killer, I wonder if those skin cells have anymore use?

"Is there anymore use for those skin cells?" Trevor looks at me before carefully removing some of the skin cells under the victim fingernails and places them on a small circular tray.

"Veronica could probably give you more information about the killer with them." He puts a lid over the skin cells so they stay on the Petri dish. I give a little wave to Trevor and thank him before leaving his autopsy room and head to Veronica's office. I walk to her office and knock on the door. She looks up and gives me a small smile.

"What can I do for you Sergeant Wilson?" She gestures for me to enter and I do so. I place the skin cells on Veronica's desk.

"I'm wondering if there is anymore information you can gather from these skin cells." I place them on her desk and she takes the Petri dish. She starts analysing them with her equipment.

"Give me a couple of hours and I should have some results for you." I nod my head and start to walk out of her office. I start heading down the hallway and see Jones, he gestures for me to come over so I walk over to him.

"I've brought Gregory Knight into the interrogation room. I thought you should be here when the interrogation commenced." I nod my head and open the door and I see out first suspect.

Info: Suspect 1
Name: Gregory Knight
Age: 22
Occupation: Cashier at Rosebrooke Supermarket
RTV: Victim's boyfriend
Hair colour: Brown (Short)
Eye colour: Green
Height: 5'8
Weight: 86kg
Accessories: Watch on left hand
Blood type: AB+

"Officers what exactly have I done? And can we make it quick? I'm waiting for my girlfriend to come home after an errand." Gregory folds his arms and taps his foot impatiently waiting for our responses.

"Mr.Knight was your girlfriend Felicia Hawk by any chance?" Gregory looks at me with suspicion.

"Why did you use past tense Sergeant?" Gregory's tone becomes filled with worry. I could tell by his facial expression that he knew something was wrong.

"Mr.Knight, I hate to tell you this but your girlfriend Felicia... Has been murdered." Gregory's eyes widen and his mouth drops open, he tries to speak but nothing would come out. He begins to cry and I go to comfort him but before I can do that he looks up at us before standing up.

"You better find the son of a bitch that did this!" Gregory begins to yell while tears stream down his face. "Felicia didn't deserve this! What did she do wrong?!" He begins to rock back and forth slowly in the chair. While he rocks back and forth I notice a few red streaks on his chest. I move a little closer to get a better look and I can see that they are scratches. I write it down in my little journal while Jones looks at what I'm writing. I show him what I wrote and Jones takes note of it on his tablet.

"Mr.Knight... Gregory... Was Felicia living with you?" He doesn't say anything but nod his head yes. "We have to search your house, is it alright if we do so?" Gregory continues to nod yes. I go to leave the interrogation room but Jones taps my shoulder grabbing my attention.

"I'm going to put Gregory in a cell, just until he calms down." I nod my head to show that I understand.

"Good idea Jones, also when you have done could you go to the Rosebrooke bar? That was mentioned in another clue I found at the crime scene." Jones does a military salute in a joking manner. I give him a sarcastic look before he says something.

"Roger that Sergeant Wilson, I'll head to the Rosebrooke bar after I'm done." I nod my head before going to Gregory's house. The drive should have been 10 minutes but considering I'm still knew to the area it took me 30-40 minutes, before I pull up in the driveway of the house my walkie talkie begins to make a static sound.

"Sergeant Wilson." I couldn't really think of anything to say so I tried to sound as professional as I could.

"Sergeant Wilson, it's Veronica, I have the results regarding the skin cells you gave me." I didn't expect Veronica to be communicating with me through a walkie talkie, she must be using the Chief's walkie talkie.

"Thanks Veronica. I'll pop by when I'm back from my investigation at Mr.Knight's home." The static ends so I park the car in front of the home before exiting it. I walk up to the entrance and to my surprise a woman opens the door.

"Is there a problem officer?" She looked at me in confusion. I smile before walking closer to the entrance and introducing myself.

"Hello ma'am, I'm Sergeant Wilson. Is this where Gregory Knight lives?" I hope I'm not at the wrong address. The woman exits from the home before crossing her arms and changing her posture to a more threatening, impatient stance.

"It is. What's it to you and why are you here?" I remain calm and patient with the woman who seems to be protective of Gregory's home.

"I'm here to search the property." The woman rolls her eyes before tapping her foot on the ground.

"Does Gregory know you're here?" Oh I see, so she's interrogating me. Well looks like I'll play her little "game."

"That depends who's asking sweetheart." Her eyes widen and her mouth drops, she was shocked at what I said.

"Rosa Knight, that's who's asking asshole." I change fold my arms and realise this is the second suspect.

"Rosa Knight, I'm going to need you to come down to the station immediately." I use a professional and calm tone so she doesn't get intimidated.

"I'm not going to the station with you officer, I've done nothing wrong." She is about to walk off and enter the home but I grab her wrist and put the hand cuffs on her.

"Refusing arrest will result in a fine, so you either come quietly or receive the fine. Either way you have to come to the station, it's important." She turns and faces me before speaking.

"What's so important that I need to come down to the station, can you at least answer that?" I guess I can help her understand by answering her question.

"You're a suspect for Felicia Hawk's murder. We believe you were the last one to see her alive." Her facial expression changes and she smirks and mumbles before talking.

"Alright. I'll come to the station with you." I open the door and she enters the police car. Looks like I'll have to investigate the house later. I grab the walkie talkie and push the button.

"Jones can you hear me?" The static stays for a couple of seconds before a message comes through.

"I'm here Sergeant Wilson, what seems to be the problem?" I could tell that Jones wasn't at the station due to the noise.

"I have Rosa Knight with me, I'm taking her back to the station. I should be about half an hour." I hear Rosa tsk behind me but I ignore it and continue to drive.

"Understood. I should be finished here in about half an hour as well. Over and out." The signal dies and Rosa begins to complain about my driving and my personality. I mentally sigh and dread the next thirty minutes. This day and case is going to be long and this town will prove to be the definition of hell.
