---Ink's POV----
We had all been talking softly to each other, simply discussing what we thought the smartest next move for us would be when Nightmare suddenly gave us all a heart attack.
Everyone had been awake, except Nightmare, and it was about mid day, the sun having fully risen outside.
None of had even done anything that could have woke Nightmare up. He had been curled up on the floor asleep. And we left him that way. None of us wanted to wake him for many reasons. One of them being that he'd probably strangle whoever woke him. Reason two being he'd definitely be in a super pissed mood because of this whole Cross situation we're trying to fix. And reason three, he actually looked a little calmer in his sleep.
But then suddenly he jolted like he had a heart attack, sitting bolt upright with his eye wide open.
We all yelped, looking over at him as he hunched over, clutching his chest where his soul was hidden.
"N-Nightmare!?" Error called, cautiously getting to his feet.
"I-I have to go." Nightmare growled, his voice coming out harsh snd raspy.
"G-Go? Go where?!"
"Cross..." He mumbled, forcing himself up to his feet. "I-I need to get him..."
"Nightmare we've been over this." Error said nervously, summoning a bone attack by his side as Nightmare stumbled forwards, heading for the exit.
"Get out of my way." He hissed, wrapping a tentacle around Error's waist before flinging him into me.
I yelped, being knocked down by Error's body as his dead weight barrelled into me. "N-Nightmare wait!"
Error growled loudly, rolling off of me as he flung his hands out in front of himself, making his signature blue strings shoot out and tangle around Nightmare. "We told you about this! We need to make a plan before we can rescue Cross!"
Nightmare hissed, glaring at us so aggressively that I could have sworn my soul stopped for a moment. "None of you will help him! You're all selfish pricks! Not one of you would risk your lives for him. NOT ONE OF YOU! And if you won't help Cross then I will!"
Error's strings snapped suddenly and Nightmare made a break for it, running towards the exit.
Horror lunged out in front of him, holding his axe. But a black tentacle like thing was wrapped around his waist and he was quickly thrown into Lust.
I whipped around to see Nightmare's kids glaring at us, clearing the path for their dad.
"Go get him dad!" They called, watching as Nightmare disappeared, teleporting to where I can only assume he thinks Cross is.
We all stopped, the reality of what had just happened starting to sink in.
"O-Oh god..." I mumbled, covering my mouth with a hand.
Nightmare had just signed himself up for suicide.
---Nightmare's POV----
I fell to the ground, spawning outside the tall, grey walls of Lilitown Asylum. They were made of concrete, meters thick. The only way to get in is through the medieval-type gate that leads to the front entrance.
There's probably a way to get over them, but I need to do this as quick as possible.
I hissed softly as I got to my feet, my soul feeling like it was on fire. The soul connection Cross and I share alerts us if something life threatening happens to each other. So to be jolted awake by the most painful sting in my soul for a long time, I knew something terrible must have happened. I swear to god, if X has hurt him in any way I'll kill him.
I ran up to the main entrance, quickly melting through the bars before the magic restraining force fields around the grounds kicked in, forcing me back to my solid form.
Luckily, I had made it through before the suppressors kicked in, so I managed to not solidify with half my body still stuck in the gate. That would have been a problem.
I heard guards calling out behind me, but I ignored them walking across the hard concrete to the main entrance, not really paying attention to the sudden blaring alarms that had been set off.
X has probably given my description to all the guards here, so the second they see me, it'll be a shooting spree.
I laughed darkly to myself as the entrance doors slowly opened to reveal about twenty armoured guards, all holding guns.
As soon as they saw me, they opened fire. Luckily for me, the fact that I can make bullets go right through me with only the feeling of a minor sting is something I can do without needing my magic. Without is a bit more painful though.
I walked forwards quicker, making a sort of shield with my tentacles so that they absorbed most of the impact.
"STAY BACK!" They yelled. "W-WE'RE WARNING YOU!"
I ignored them completely, lashing out my tentacles to cut down four of the guards, the sharpened points spearing right through their chests. Instead of ripping the tentacles out, I lifted the four struggling bodies up, slamming them into their frozen teammates.
They all went flying into the walls, crumpling as their heads slammed into the hard concrete. A few tried to get back up, but I quickly silenced them by stabbing my tentacles through the back of their skulls.
"Stay out of my way." I growled, stepping over their limp bodies. "I don't need fools like you making this harder for me."
A few groans came from behind me, but none of the guards made any attempts to chase after or stop me.
I narrowed my eye, looking around as I desperately tried to sense Cross' aura. I could practically feel him, but something was definitely wrong. His auras twisted, as if half of him has been ripped away. And the thing that scares me most, is the fact that currently the only emotions I can sense from him are agony, sadness and the one feeling that made my soul freeze up. It was the feeling that told me he was slowly dying.
A yell from behind me caused me to whip around, only to have a spear fly past, practically skimming the side of my face.
I hissed, grabbing onto that guard by the neck before slamming them to the wall and starting to walk over.
They immediately started panicking, thrashing and kicking as they let out choked screams.
"Shut it." I hissed, wrapping a tentacle over his mouth to silence him momentarily. "Now you're going to tell me where my Cross is within five seconds or I'll rip your fragile body apart."
They panicked, stuttering nonsense as I moved the tentacle away. "I-I don't know who you're on about!"
"Five."
"I-I don't know who Cross is! I-I swear!" Their eyes were wide with fear, but I could tell they were lying.
"Four."
"L-Let me go you monster! X h-has moved him!"
Another lie. "Three."
"IM NOT L-LYING!!"
"Two." I growled, my tentacle tightening around my neck significantly.
"O-OKAY I'LL TELL YOU!" He cried, choking and gasping.
"One."
"H-HE'S DOWN IN THE SPECIALIST CELLS! X I-IS KEEPING HIM THERE! I-I CAN E-EVEN TAKE YOU THERE IF YOU WANT! J-JUST PLEASE D-DON'T KIL--"
I cut them off, stabbing through their stomach with a spare tentacle. "What was that last bit? Sorry, I couldn't hear you."
They fell to the floor, letting out another strangled attempt to keep breathing before they went limp, finally dead.
I hummed walking on at the sound of heavy footsteps coming up behind me. More guards were on the way.
A board on the wall caught my eye and I stopped, looking it up and down to helpfully see directions to all the different cell blocks.
Specialist Cells
I narrowed my eyes, glancing down to corridor where the arrows were pointed. "I'm coming Cross."
Sudden gunshots rang out to my side, and I hissed, shielding my face with an arm as five guards came into view, shooting frantically at me.
I dived to the side, stumbling into another corridor. Out of the corner of my eye I saw one of the holding cell's glass shatter.
For a moment nothing happened, then a girl jumped out of the opening the shattered glass had made.
I instantly recognised her.
She had brown hair, dip dyed pink at the bottom. All her clothes were either pink or purple. Pink and light purple polo jumper. Pink skirt. But disappointing brown boots.
We caught eyes for a moment and both froze. But then she rolled out of the way as one of the guards threw a spear in her direction.
I turned away and ran, following the arrows that pointed towards the Specialist Cells.
The directions lead to some stairs, and I practically jumped down them, ignoring their actual use.
As soon as I'd kicked down the giant double doors at the bottom of the cell it was like I'd entered another world.
A long row of fortified cells greeted me. Each of them having glass so thick, that I'm pretty sure you'd need a rocket launcher or something stupid to break it.
They all seemed empty, but as I stepped forwards a pair of hands suddenly slammed against the glass in the cell to my left, making me jolt and look over.
I was met with the sight of a human looking me up and down, giggling their head off as they pressed their hands and face against the glass.
"H-Have you c-came to get r-rid of them?!"
I blinked, tilting my head to the side. "Come to get rid of what...?"
They let out a strangled groan, banging their head against the glass repeatedly. "The brain chickens..."
"Uh..."
"Th-They crawl into your brain th-through your ears!" They hissed, letting out another giggle at the end. "A-And then they s-scratch their way all the way up to your BRAIN!!!" They burst into insane giggles after that and I rolled my eyes, starting to walk on.
"N-NO WAIT!" They cried. "HEHE, I-I'M NOT DONE!"
I growled, looking back at them.
"Th-They're pecking away at my brain..." They whispered. "Th-They're pecking away at my sanity! Y-YOU ALL THINK IM CRAZY! HEHE! But it's not me...it's the brain chickens..." They mumbled the last bit, clutching their head as they stumbled back in their cell.
I narrowed my eyes and hissed, continuing to walk on. Cross doesn't deserve to be in a place with freaks like this.
"H-HEY YOU!" Another voice from a cell rang out, resulting in another person desperately pressing against the glass as if they could fall through it if they tried hard enough. "D-DON'T IGNORE ME!"
Guess what? I ignored them, walking right past and down the corridor, glancing in each cell I went past to check if Cross could be there.
"I-I know where your friend is..." A voice whispered to my right.
I stopped abruptly, turning to look into the cell the voice had came from. What was in there made me want to be sick.
It was a little girl, looking no older than seven. Her once blond hair was matted and clumped, and all her clothes seemed to be covered in blood. But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was that she didn't have any eyes. There were just two gaping sockets, bloody and festering. The crazed thing must have ripped them out herself.
"You're looking for that skeleton aren't you...?" She whispered, somehow looking up at me despite not having eyes. "You might be too late...there was lots of screaming yesterday..."
I shook my head, still managing to sense his aura. "H-He's still alive."
She smiled up at me, her teeth also being mangled and yellow. "Oh, well in that case...he's over there..." She pointed a shaky finger at something behind me, and I quickly turned around, narrowing my eyes as I a saw a door I hadn't noticed before.
"Thanks." I muttered, walking forwards.
"No problem..." She whispered, her voice fading behind me. "Good luck..."
I walked up to the door, hissing as I saw all the security measures. Hand scanners, padlock, password key pad. I don't have time to figure out all of these.
I slammed all four tentacles into the lock, ignoring the painful feeling of them crumpling under the strength of the door. I tried again, growling. "CROSS?!"
A gasp came from the cell and then a voice rang out, making me almost faint from relief. "N-NIGHTMARE!!"
I attacked the door, desperately trying to get through to him. "J-JUST HOLD ON IN THERE!"
Focusing all my strength, I launched forwards, smashing through the lock keeping the door in place.
The door burst open, revealing the white walled cell in the middle.
And in the middle of that cell, the one person that means the most to me was sat, hugging themselves tightly as they looked up at me, their eyes wide with fear, relief and agony.
Cross.
