11.2 | SIREN IN MY EARS, SOUNDS LIKE SONATA
Taehyung looked at her, "Do you really think that old lady was saying the truth and we should have accepted her offer?"
The blonde girl looked confused as she tugged her on her bottom lip, not knowing what to reply. Taehyung shrugged, "This is why you still haven't become a detective." His statement made her frown as he continued to speak, "She was obviously lying in front of our faces. All those appreciations were just an act... The manobans hold shares in this university. Even the freaking principal can't say shit about Lisa, do you think the student will? The student she would assign us would not let us explore and look around."
"But the guy who escorted us said that no one liked Lisa," Chaeryeon assumed as they both walked around. Taehyung sighed, "Yeah, he did, but did you notice how scared he was when we reached the principal's office. He obviously told us what we weren't supposed to know."
Chaeryeon hummed, "So now how do we get to the storage room to find information?" The male didn't reply to her but suddenly parted his way as she walked him to watch on the marble tiles to approach a lanky boy who was reading a book in a corner, with round glasses. As she walked faster to match his pace, the boy looked intimidated when the two reached him.
"Do you know where the storage room is?" Taehyung quietly asked, as the boy slowly nodded, as if hesitant about it. Taehyung smiled, "Wonderful because I'm a detective and if you don't show it to me immediately, you might risk your seat in the university."

Stepping out of the taxi, the first thing that was visible was the magnificent view of Naksan beach down the slope, its blue water glimmering in the sunlight. On the opposite side, a beautiful farmhouse settled, its huge lawn surrounding it from all directions with hundreds of flowers blooming on the bushes. The farmhouse looked victorian, as someone had brought it from the 80s into the future.
Jennie closed the door of her car shut, staring in awe at how the house represented some kind of museum. "Wow, this place is awesome," she whispered to herself, tugging on the hem of her blue dress as she walked around. A man who was fully dressed in black and white appeared in the garden, smiling at Jennie, "Good afternoon, Ms Kim. I am James, the head butler here at Naksan Naturae Mansion. It took you some while."
The smile on his face was genuine as if he was pleased to see her like she was a tourist and not a detective. "Yeah, traffic problems. There were a lot of tourists visiting," she replied while admiring the garden. James let out a small chuckle, barely audible under his breath, "Oh it's always like that during this time of the year. Starting of September is hectic but profitable for everyone working here."
Jennie didn't know what to reply, so she just continued to smile as they both entered the huge farmhouse, which looked even more spectacular from inside. Everything was wooden—from the tables, chairs and wall clocks as if the modern machinery never existed. Amazed by how gorgeous the house looked despite being old fashioned, the female couldn't help but be stuck in her own thoughts.
"Oh, Ms Kim, you finally arrived. I have been waiting for you. Let's take a seat outside. I was waiting since forever, even the tea got cold. James will warm it up for you," a voice brought Jennie back as she found herself standing in front of an old woman who was dressed completely in blue, with her white curls falling on the shoulder. Jennie nodded, as they both entered the huge backyard, full of palm trees.
Grace Manoban took a seat comfortably, "So we shall begin. I don't think you have much time that I can waste." Despite looking and being old fashioned, she emitted the rich aura which all the other family members had. Jennie subtly turned on the recorder, putting up her first question, "So Mrs Grace, let's get straight to point. How was your relation with Lisa?"
"Oh, Lisa was my sweet granddaughter. The kids used to visit me every September. I still remember when Aran and Lisa were kids," she replied, looking around the garden, "they used to roam all around and try to eat candies."
And so, Jennie knew the Manoban blood was all about showing fake crying.
"Didnt Mrs and Mr Manoban come with them?"Jennie asked, noticing how the old women didn't mention about them. Grace shook her head which was hung low, "Their parents were always busy. My son wanted to become successful but he forgot that a person becomes successful in their life when they have a beautiful family and a stable job."
Jennie nodded, putting up another question, "Did the kids get affected by their ignorance?" The sound of a lawnmower popped up, distracting them for a minute before the old soul replied, "Of course they did, especially Lisa. Aran was better at hiding his emotions but Lisa," she paused for a minute, remembering the scenarios, "she cried every single night when she would be here. She would only calm down when she would hear her mom's voice but soon or later she learned how to live alone."
"About Lisa's death? Why weren't you invited to her wedding?" Jennie asked, recalling how the bride's own grandmother wasn't present. Grace let out a bitter chuckle as if pitying herself, "The girl who was getting married wasn't my granddaughter. Lisa changed when she turned 17. The girl who used to run around me and beg me to give her biscuits now thought of her grandma as an old lady who was wasting her money by staying in this shabby house. Just living last years."
Shabby house? I know Lisa was dumb, but I didn't know she was blind too.
Jennie looked around once again, "Shabby house? It is one of the most gorgeous houses I have ever seen." The grandmother smiled at the compliment, "Well she didnt think the same. I love this house because it is where me and my husband got married. We both were in love and supported each other always. I remember when he died, I was right here crying. This house holds my existence in the world. Lisa wanted to sell this house and get me a better house to live in. She thought this was too old fashioned for the manoban family."
"But you still loved her didn't you?" Jennie asked, keeping a hand on her shoulder. The reply came after a few minutes of pondering as if trying to find the right words, "Of course I do. I didnt want to sell this house. So we had a fight. I thought maybe my small girl would come back and apologize to me but instead, she cut all connection with me."
Jennie had started feeling bad for the old women, she was the only one who seemed likeable in the family, and even if the aura was an arrogant one, she seemed pretty genuine. Jennie kept a hand on her knee, "What about others in the family? Didnt they invite you?"
The old lady laid back on the blue couch, "Well, Aran was the only one who cared for me. He used to visit me once in a while and stay here with me for few days and leave. It surprises me how I used to be more affectionate towards Lisa but in the end, it was Aran who took care of me. He came by before they went to Barcelona to apologize. Personally, I believe that Lisa was a spoiled kid. She got whatever she wanted. Moreover, me not being present at the wedding won't affect anyone."
"Do you think maybe her parents were involved?" Jennie asked, feeling more comfortable with the old lady. Grace's face turned into a mixture of confusion and horror, "No, I hope not. My son doesn't even remember he has a mother but still he is my son and my son isn't a criminal. He won't kill anyone, more than anything his daughter."
Jennie nodded, "Any person you suspect? Someone who might have been hurt by Lisa and would have taken revenge?" Grace's eyes looked teary as if she would break down any second, "Jennie, I am her own blood and she hurt me to this extent that I didnt even want to be present at her wedding, her most special day. Do you think there can be someone out there who she must have hurt more than me?"
The female detective smiled, "Hmm thank you so much. This means a lot. If you want any help you can contact me, here is my card."
Grace kept a hand on Jennie's shoulder, "Aww a young lady showing sympathy to an old woman. You are a nice child. Just one piece of advice from this old soul. There would be times when doing the wrong seems better than being right but remember after we die our decisions would decide where our path is." Jennie nodded, "Yes it will, I'll take your leave now."
They both just stood up, when Jennie's phone rang, she passed an apologetic smile at Grace before picking up the call, "Yes, Tae? Everything fine?"
Taehyung's panicked voice replied, "Fine? Everything is freaking wrong. Meet me at my house within thirty, because I am this close to breaking a vase out of anger."
