35. benjamin's plot.
"I just can't believe we're graduating school so soon!"
Daisy was moping on the common room sofa about the upcoming year-end. James, Benjamin, Thomas, Gwen, and Marlee didn't seem to sympathize.
"We're not," said Thomas confusedly. "We're graduating sixth-year, not Hogwarts!"
"Yes, but then seventh year will go by so quickly," moaned Daisy, "and then we'll get jobs, and then we'll die!"
She groaned. This got her a concerned look from her five friends. Existentialism was definitely not something she enjoyed.
"Right, well before we die," said Benjamin, in a tone much more cheerful than Daisy's, "we've got one last prank for the year."
"But you guys got three weeks of detention last time!" exclaimed Daisy. "Do you really wanna be in detention for the last few weeks of school?"
"This is the most important prank we've pulled yet," defended Benjamin. Gwen raised an eyebrow.
"How important?"
"Wait, yeah, how is this our most important prank yet?" asked Thomas. Benjamin and James exchanged glances so quickly that Daisy almost missed it.
"You'll see, Thomas," smiled Benjamin. Daisy noticed a look in his eyes when he looked at her brother—adoration, care, sincerity.
"Just tell us the prank, will you?" asked Marlee. James rubbed his hands together.
"Well, we snuck over to Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes again—"
"—Of course," interrupted Marlee with a sigh.
"—and we picked up a giant set of fireworks!" continued James. "It's this thing that lets us spell out some words with a bunch of colours! We'll set them off during dinner in the Great Hall and write some messages for everyone to see!"
"Oh my Merlin," sighed Gwen. "Lemme predict this ... two weeks detention!"
"Three weeks!" guessed Daisy.
"One and a half!" predicted Marlee.
"Anyways," said James, cutting them off, "it'll be brilliant! Everybody'll be surprised! Oh, and I told my Mum about this so she doesn't send me another Howler. That was ... humiliating."
"It was hilarious," chuckled Gwen. James sighed.
"How did you get your Mum to agree to this again?" asked Thomas. Once again, James and Benjamin exchanged another glance so quick that Daisy would've missed it if she had blinked. Thomas didn't seem to have noticed this at all.
"I told her I'd clean Snuffles' litterbox without magic," shrugged James. "It'll be painful, but ... worth it."
"That'll take you all summer," said Gwen. James' eyes lit up.
"Oh, that reminds me!" he said brightly. "I'm actually pretty excited for this summer! It'll be much better than last summer, at least."
"What was wrong with last summer?" asked Marlee. James made a face.
"I didn't have anything to do," James recounted, "it was too hot, we barely had any barbecues, the six of us never met up all together, and I never really got to see any of you guys!"
"We stayed at your house for two weeks," pointed out Thomas, raising an eyebrow.
"Right, but Daisy was pissed at me," said James, glancing at the said girl. Daisy gave him a sheepish smile. "We'll just make up for it with this summer! We can go to the beach, have barbecues, and, oh! There's this really nice ice cream place near my house!"
"Enough about summer!" interrupted Benjamin. "We've got more important things coming up that are much sooner than summer break! In two days, to be precise!"

Two days passed by quickly. Daisy noticed that time tended to do that when the end of the school year was nearing. Now that the Quidditch season was over, she spent most of her time studying for her exams, talking with her friends late at night in the common room, and eating meals with Miles.
Though they had been together for a bit over two months now, they still had not kissed. Daisy could tell the boy was getting a bit wary, but she couldn't find it in herself to feel comfortable kissing somebody. Gwen and Marlee had made sure she knew that this was okay once she confided her feelings to them, which she greatly appreciated.
Even whilst being distracted by Miles and the usual end-of-year studying, Daisy couldn't help but notice the not-so-subtle flirting between her brother and Benjamin. She wasn't sure how she hadn't noticed it before—it was almost every second of every day. The way they would always sit next to each other, the way Benjamin would crack flirty little jokes, and the way that Thomas' cheeks would turn bright red each time.
The dinner of the prank had come after a long day of classes. Daisy, Marlee, Gwen, James, Thomas, and Benjamin were all sitting at the long Gryffindor table, munching on steak, pie, and chicken. Marlee and Gwen were complaining about the amount of homework Slughorn had assigned them, Thomas and Benjamin were talking animatedly with each other, James was sipping his pumpkin juice, and Daisy was looking over at Nearly Headless Nick, who seemed to be frightening some first-years. It was a pretty peaceful dinner—well, as peaceful as it could get in a school of magic.
Daisy had braced herself for the fireworks by leaving her pygmypuff, Pig, in her dormitory to make sure she wouldn't freak out. Every time Benjamin moved his arm, Daisy flinched, expecting each time to be an explosion of fireworks. Nobody truly felt safe after that Firewhiskey stunt back in April.
"Will you stop flinching, Daisy?" asked Benjamin, after the fifth time he reached for his mug, causing Daisy to jump in her seat once again. "It's not like I'm blowing the place up! It's just some light fireworks!"
"After the Firewhiskey incident, Benny Boy," sighed Daisy, "I'm expecting some unexpected twist that might actually blow the place up. That's why I left Pig in my dorm."
"It'll be fine, my lady," assured James, which did not put Daisy's mind at peace whatsoever. He looked over at Benjamin, raising an eyebrow. Benjamin nodded back at him. Daisy drew in a sharp intake of breath.
"Ready?" asked Benjamin.
"Ready," replied James and Thomas simultaneously. Benjamin looked serious now. He pulled out a big box from under the table. On it, there was a bright orange "W," symbolizing the "Weasley" in "Weasleys' Wizard Whizzes."
"How many fireworks are in there?" asked Gwen tentatively. Benjamin merely shot her a smirk as he opened up the box. He took out a bright red firework and stood on top of his chair, attracting the attention of many other Gryffindors. James loudly clinked his mug, making many other student quiet down.
"Everybody!" shouted Benjamin. By now, everyone in the Great Hall had gone quiet, most looking fearful of what he would say next. "It's a bit too peaceful today, isn't it? Don't you lot want some fun?"
"Yeah!" cheered maybe half of the Great Hall. The other half, Daisy included, looked horrified. Benjamin smiled, lifted his wand to the firework, and muttered something under his breath. Daisy bit her lip, waiting in anticipation. After a few moments of nothing, she tilted her head in confusion. Many others in the Great Hall began chuckling. Benjamin's jaw dropped.
"Oops, I dunno what's going on ..." he muttered, sitting back down. The students around them seemed more at ease, including Daisy, until she looked closer at Benjamin's face and recognize the familiar smile of mischief under his feigned confusion. So quickly that Daisy nearly missed it, he tapped his wand to the firework and tossed it up.
BOOM!
The laughing students went silent. Above the Great Hall was a giant, red flurry of fireworks. Benjamin threw up another one, this time blue. Then, a yellow one, a green one, and then back to red. By now, most of the other students were standing up, jumping, and cheering. Even Daisy was grinning from ear to ear at the magnificent display.
James and Thomas had joined in, now both shoving their hands into the big box and tossing the contents into the air.
BOOM!
A firework that looked like a dragon exploded.
BOOM!
A firework showing a vibrant rainbow exploded.
BOOM!
A firework of a smiley face exploded.
Daisy laughed at each one, all of them so utterly extra that it made her forget all of her problems. She could tell that the three boys were running out of fireworks as the explosions slowed down. Benjamin pulled out five especially big ones, which seemed to be the last since James and Thomas moved their hands away from the box.
Daisy could see Benjamin take a deep breath before throwing the first one up. She looked up in anticipation before it exploded and displayed some bright blue words: Thomas Wood.
Everybody in the Great Hall turned to look at Thomas, who raised his eyebrows. James was beaming. Marlee and Gwen slapped their hands to their mouths as if they knew what was coming. Daisy, on the other hand, had no idea of what Benjamin was leading to. Neither did Thomas, evidently, considering the shocked and confused expression on his face.
Benjamin threw up the next firework, which showed purple words: You're a great friend.
Thomas laughed and rolled his eyes good-naturedly. Daisy was still confused about what was going on, but she could see that Benjamin looked more stressed out than Daisy had ever seen him.
"Well, duh," said Thomas, shooting Benjamin a little wink. Benjamin threw up the next firework.
This one was a vibrant yellow and spelled out: I have a question.
The students in the Great Hall all looked curious at the explosion. James looked like a child on Christmas day. Marlee's jaw had dropped completely. Thomas tilted his head.
"What's your question?" he asked. Daisy, just as confused as her brother seemed, looked over at Benjamin, who tossed up the second to last firework.
In green coloring this time, it spelled out: I really fancy you.
Daisy's jaw dropped. There seemed to be a collective gasp across all of the students, the loudest gasp coming from Professor McGonagall. James was smiling so hard his eyes were nearly closed. Marlee looked stunned. Gwen's hands were still covering her mouth. Whatever Daisy was expecting, this had not been it.
"That's not a question!" yelled someone in the crowd.
"Shut it!" shouted James.
Thomas seemed to be frozen, only looking up at the fireworks and nowhere else. Benjamin, on the other hand, was watching Thomas intently as if looking for any signs of movement. Then, he tossed up the last firework.
Finally, in bright red words, the explosion displayed: Will you go out with me?
The entire Great Hall had gone silent. Daisy held her breath as she along with hundreds of other students and teachers watched Thomas for an answer. He was now looking at Benjamin, cheeks bright red and jaw dropped. Daisy's mind repeated only one thing: Please say yes!
After what felt like a decade, Thomas said, "Yes."
What followed was a blur. The Great Hall erupted in cheers. Daisy along with many others stood up to scream in excitement. She felt extremely overjoyed.
Benjamin grinned, walking forward, wrapping his hands around Thomas' neck, and kissing him. Daisy had to admit, it was weird seeing her brother kiss someone, but if it had to be anyone, she was sure that she would've picked Benjamin, anyway.
Once the two broke apart, both grinning from ear to ear, James ran forward and engulfed them in a group hug. He seemed to be more excited than both of them and was shaking like a leaf.
"Does this mean I'm going to have to third wheel now?" the messy-haired boy asked, to which Benjamin and Thomas merely laughed.

The six of them were sitting in their usual spot in the common room, which were the seats in front of the fireplace. There was a soft chatter around them as their fellow Gryffindors did homework, talked, and played Exploding Snap or Gobstones with one another. Thomas and Benjamin sat on the large couch, Thomas' right arm wrapped around Benjamin's shoulders. Daisy couldn't help but smile at the sight.
"You know," began Thomas, causing Daisy, James, Benjamin, Marlee, and Gwen to look over at him, "I knew you two were hiding something from me."
He gestured towards James and Benjamin. Benjamin chuckled.
"I'm bad at keeping secrets, alright?" said Benjamin. "But wasn't that just amazing? A James Potter-level display, am I right?"
He and James high-fived. Thomas shook his head, laughing.
"Sure, Ben," he replied.
"It was amazing, Benny Boy!" exclaimed Daisy. "So unexpected and so romantic! Welcome to the family!"
"I don't think it was unexpected," said Marlee. Gwen nodded along with her. "I mean, it was pretty obvious! What, with all the flirting you two do, I knew it was bound to happen sooner or later. You're just lucky Thomas is completely clueless."
"Really, Marls, 'cause your jaw was practically on the floor," commented Benjamin, making the group burst into laughter.
"Alright, alright, it was a great love confession," admitted Marlee, once she had recovered from her laughter.
"Why'd you take so long to say 'yes'?" asked Benjamin to Thomas, who looked bashful. "I was nervous out of my wits if you couldn't tell!"
"Look, I was in shock!" defended Thomas. "I didn't expect this to happen today. I thought we were just blowing up the Great Hall. Oh, and how'd you two get McGonagall to not give us detention?"
"Oh, I told her the real plan," smiled Benjamin. "Took a bit of convincing, but she seemed excited."
"And I told my Mum as well, so she wouldn't send me a Howler if McGonagall changed her mind!" exclaimed James.
"Ooh, Thomas, when are you telling Mum and Dad?" piped up Daisy. "Mum's gonna freak! She'll be so excited! Oh, Merlin ... Benjamin'll be at our house all summer!"
"Hell yeah!" exclaimed Benjamin, high-fiving Thomas. James tutted.
"No, no, no," he said. "The five of you are all coming to my house. I refuse to be the third wheel. I won't be, right?"
"Of course not, Jamesie," teased Thomas, ruffling his friend's hair. "We love you! I mean, you helped plan that entire thing, didn't you?"
James grinned at him.
"Anything for our Thomas."
