Did you know that it's possible to die from drowning up to 24 hours AFTER you have left water? Officially known as 'pulmonary edema', (but more commonly referred to as 'secondary drowning') this is a form of drowning whereby water gets into your lungs, irritates the lining and causes fluid buildup in the process. For the next 24 hours, this can cause coughing, chest pain, trouble breathing, tiredness, and in some cases, death. While rare, this form of drowning makes up roughly 2% of all drowning deaths.
