Chapter 6: Hi, my name is Hell!

On a yacht, some friends were having a party. The sea was crystal clear, the sunlight reflected on the blue water and created shining spots; well this was summertime in Mauritius when you were rich. Blair took her phone and called Madison, her best friend:

"Hey, don't you wanna come? There's everyone, please come. You can't stay at home, this is summer!"

"Blair! I've already told you, my parents are out for the day and I have to stay to look after my little brother."

"Well, you can come with Alexander if this is the PROBLEM. Look, for once everybody come to my parties, I'd like that my best friend came too!"

"Who came?"

"Sharon, Jessica, Brandon, Michael and Ethan."

"Oh God! I hate Michael, It's over! I won't come!"

"As you wish Mads."

Madison went back to sit on the sofa next to Alexander and they continued to watch their film when suddenly a violent shock resounded twice. Alexander ran to the phone cell and tried to phone the parents but all the phones were offline:

"Mads, mommy doesn't answer!"

"Try dad, quick!"

"He doesn't answer either."

"Damn it, try Blair."

"What's going on?"

"I don't know..."

Alexander started to cry.

"No stop crying it will be okay. I promise."

"Is it the end of the world?"

"..."

-----

In the meantime, the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister were together at one of the most important political conference of the history for Prime Ministers. The conference was called in urgency, nothing was prepared and both the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister were together at Grand Bay Conference Center. The two men were never supposed to be in the same room for security reason. But this time it was different. Even though Grand Bay wasn't far from where they work, the importance of the meeting was drowning all the political people.

When they arrived, two men couldn't help but find that the sky was darker than usual. Suddenly the ground seemed to shake slightly. In fact the earthquakes mostly touched Port Louis: the parabolic antenna has fallen of the mountain and has broken. No more phone calls were possible in Mauritius.

Everybody stopped what they were doing, and stared at each other, unsure what just happened. All the people who were present turned to the Prime Minister. He tried not to act like he didn't know what was happening, because for sure he didn't have a clue of what just happened:

"It's nothing ladies and gentlemen, it must be some working in progress around here, you know maybe for a new building. Don't worry, let's just go inside and finish what we're here for."

He waited that most of the people went in the conference building before approaching one of his men:

"Please call the meteorological center at Vacoas."

He gave a phone to the man.

"Hello? Hello? Is there anyone? ... Hello? ... I think we have a problem," he said looking at the man beside him.

As they were near the sea, the Prime Minister looked at it and found that it seemed to withdraw itself. But at that moment, one of the security guards called him, so he didn't have any more chance to have a look at the sea. During the whole conference, the Prime Minister was unsure whether to tell that the meteorological center was not responding and that no phone calls could be made. Something must have happened. Something really bad.

After the meeting, the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister were together, taking a sip of champagne outside. After more or less two hours, the sea had withdrawn to about a hundred meters from the shore. The Prime Minister was having a really bad feeling about it. He was still trying to contact the meteorological center at Vacoas, but it was vain. However he was not the only one to look at the sea; many other politicians were gathering next to him, some of them were pointing to some Mauritians who were walking where was supposed to be the water. The Prime Minister was definitely scared of what was going to happen. Moreover the sky was turning into a deadly black and grey color. Meanwhile many people had discovered that they couldn't call or contact others.

Suddenly one of the guards, to which he had ordered to find out what happened to the phone calls, ran towards him, stopped, panting and said breathlessly:

"The antenna that allowed calls and any types of connection has scrambled. I went to the meteorological center and they announced that an earthquake of magnitude 3.5 had shaken Mauritius, but mainly the North. It seems that it came from the movement of two tectonic plates. And most probably the sea is withdrawing because a tsunami is coming!"

-------

Madison and Alexander's parents were on the road for a little while. Their mother was admiring the amazing landscapes that they were crossing:

"Do you think it's safe to leave them alone in the house? Madison doesn't look happy," asked Jessica Griever, a middle aged mother.

"No worries, Jessica. They are old enough, they know how to take care of themselves. Madison is sixteen now, she knows what's right to do," answered her husband, who drove the car quietly.

"Yes, I know Dave. But I felt a bit of pity for Madison, she was so excited for the party, but she couldn't go because we had this dinner invitation which came in a sudden. We couldn't let Alexander alone in the house; he's only eight years old. He needed someone to take care of him," sighed Jessica, looking tired.

"I know what to do, they always wanted to go for a picnic and have mentioned it a lot of times. But we had work and refused it. Maybe we can take them to the camping side tomorrow," exclaimed Dave.

"Yes! That's a great idea! Oh! It's adorable!"

Jessica laughed and forgot that she was tired. There was only the wonderful outing that will take place tomorrow which was floating in her head.

They arrived at the restaurant which was near the sea with huge crystals chandeliers, dormant windows where we could see the entire view of the seaside. The weather wasn't so nice, the sky was grey, the wind was howling. Jessica took out her scarf and wrapped it around her shoulders. Suddenly she saw her necklace which has a photo of her family inside lying on the seat of the car:

"Oh! My necklace has broken! The chain must be fragile, I'll fix it tomorrow."

She wrapped the necklace in a tissue paper and put it inside her bag. The earthquake didn't touch the restaurant area so the parents didn't know anything about those upcoming events, leaving their kids in panic and fear. They entered the restaurant.

-------

On the yacht, the weather was becoming cloudy, the sky was losing his color, the sun was hiding behind big grey clouds, the world became colorless, it was showing his real face, cruel, violent...

The wind started to blow violently, and giant waves like monster's claws were approaching the shore:

"What's happening?" asked Blair.

"Turn on the radio," said Ethan.

The radio was not working, it was death silent. One of Blair's friend, Michael was looking at the sea:

"It's like a tsunami!"

"But it's impossible, we're in Mauritius," cried Sharon.

"In fact, it's possible because we aren't far from two tectonic plates," said Michael.

"So, what are we gonna do, nerd?" said Jessica with a sarcastic voice.

"We have to go far from the shore! Blair! Come here!" shouted Brandon.

Blair was thinking of a way to save everyone at the front of the boat.

"We have to go far away! Quick!"

"You're all crazy! We won't go away with MY boat!" cried Blair.

"It's the only solution if we want to survive," said Michael.

Blair and Michael were fighting strongly.

"Guys..." said Sharon.

"We will NOT go far from the island!"

"Guys..."

"Do you want to die or what?!"

"GUYS!!!!" shouted Sharon.

It was ghost quiet. Everybody was staring at Sharon with a puzzled look.

"I think this is it... look right there..."

The wave crashed on them.
--------

Madison and her brother were outside when they saw the most giant wave ever. Even from 30km away from the coast, she could see the 50 meter high wave. This was the first tsunami she ever saw. Madison grabbed Alexander's hand. The latter was watching in awe the scene, slowly processing what was happening. Madison brought the 8 year old boy in the house urgently:

"Pack your bag. Bring only necessary stuff. FAST!" shouted Madison at Alexander as she went to pack her own.

She was not prepared to this. Nobody was. Food cans, water, a first aid kit, matches and a pull over were in her bag.

She saw the car keys and ran to the garage. The car was there. At that moment Alexander came beside her and asked:

"What about Mom and Dad?"

Please don't say it... pleaded Madison mentally.

"They are at the coast now, aren't they?"

"Of course not, they didn't plan to be there until 3 pm," she lied, "come on."

------

The parents were enjoying their dinner; they talked with their friends, chatted about their children in their studies. Dave was a bit tired, so he chose a seat near the window. There he could see the seaside, the waves were quite big, and he noticed that the waves were stepping backwards:

"There's an incredible view from here."

Dave smiled and drank a bit of wine from his glass. He stood up and went to find his wife who was talking with her friends:

"Jessica, I saw something incredible there, come with me."

"Is it? I would love to see it."

Jessica smiled and put down her glass of wine. They moved slowly towards the dormant window:

"I remembered the first time I met you, it was on the seaside of the Australian coast. We were only students," said Jessica.

"Yeah, you were only a little girl who liked to cry and every time I came to comfort you," said Dave with a charming smile, "but even nowadays you didn't change at all. Isn't it? ... Jessica?"

Jessica didn't answer him; Dave turned back and saw her standing there like a statue with her eyes widely opened:

"Dave... look outside!" she said with a weak voice.

Dave looked outside and saw a huge wave more than 50 meters high coming in their direction. They were terrified:

"Everybody run! A tsunami is coming!" shouted Dave.

"Dave! The children..." cried Jessica.

Nobody moved, they thought that the couple was crazy; there was no tsunami in Mauritius. But when they realized that it was true the wave had already crushed the restaurant.

Before Jessica fell completely unconscious in the water, there was only one thought in her head:

"We are sorry children. We couldn't take you to picnic..."

------

And at this moment, the Prime Minister heard horrified screams coming from a woman, she was pointing at the sea. A large wave was growing higher and higher like a monster. Everybody started running towards their car, either to find an escape or to go and save their family. No part of Mauritius was able to know what was happening. From where he was, he could see the Mauritians on the shore, pointing at the wave, unsure of what it was. He could see surfers grabbing their surf boards. All these people were unaware of what was coming. Nobody would have ever thought that Mauritius would be victim of a tsunami. Nobody was prepared, he was not prepared. While the wave was approaching at full speed, he could hear desperate screams from the Mauritians who had realized that they were about to die. The wave was now at twenty meters from the shore, a 50 meters high monstrous wave, the sound of the water was horrible and the screams and yells were louder and more desperate than ever. When his guards tried to convince him to run, he had shaken his head, not wanting to run away. It was useless. He was ready to face his fate, and it seemed that his Deputy Prime Minister was thinking the same.

They looked at each other:

"I was glad to work with you," said the Deputy Prime Minister.

"Me too my friend, I just wished a better future for our population. They deserved better," he admitted pitifully.

"I know."

At that moment, the first wave hit them.

-----

At the meteorological center in Vacoas, it was the extreme panic. They received satellite footage showing the devastation on the shore, approximately twenty minutes were planned before the second wave submerged the whole North and West shores. They had to give the safety deposits to all inhabitants who were still alive. The meteorological center was trying to contact the government by telegraphy for demands to the Prime Minister but they didn't answer. The Prime Minister was declared dead. Impossible to contact the President. They just had one hope; the Deputy Prime Minister. They learnt that he was with the Prime Minister for an urgent conference. Panic gave way to horror, only the meteorological center had some information about the second wave but it couldn't be diffused. An assessment of the areas devastated by the first wave was emitted. All shores from the North to South-West were destroyed. The wave had entered 30km in the land.

------

Around 7 minutes had passed since they saw the wave forming and going higher. It must have crashed on the ground by now. Their parents must have been the first in line. Alex and Madison were now in the car. She put the machine on and went on the road. At that moment, Madison see her neighbor coming out of the house. Well, even when she was about to die, drown by a tsunami with her brother, she couldn't help but think that, at least she will die beautifully. Jackson was a year older than her and was by far the most handsome man on earth. He had a backpack with him and seemed in a rush. Madison honked the horn. Jackson seemed as relieved as one can be. Alexander was happy too, because he was always treating Jackson as his moppet or slave. Alex had that type of power over people. The young man jumped in the passenger seat and Madison drove away from the coast, her parents and her house. In a moment there will be nothing left.

While driving Madison felt the grateful look of Jackson but also the mourning one. His parents too were at the beach:

"Why are you sad, Jackson?" asked Alex.

Jackson glanced at Madison. Her eyes still on the road, she slightly shook her head. Alexander was not ready to face the truth.

Silence filled the car as she was driving towards the central plateau. However there was soon a problem, the whole northern part of Mauritius had the same idea and soon the motorway was jammed:

"What the hell?!!" screamed Madison frustrated and really frightened. She could hear the deadly sound of the second wave approaching their location.

People were getting out their car and were trying to run with their families. Madison thought the same, but soon realized that when the second wave will come, all the people will die.

The first wave had already crashed on the ground. Madison and Alexander were outside to see the damages. They were lucky that they were living on the high ground. Fortunately the wave was not enough powerful to arrive in the heights. But what they saw left them frozen. Nothing. There was nothing, every single building was destroyed. There they could see the Mauritian flag hanging pitifully on the ground. Even from where they were living they could notice some people walking outside their hidings. They were survivors. But not for long. The water was withdrawing again slowly but surely, getting ready for its second attack. And even being on the heights was not going to be sufficient.

There were just a small number of people who survived. Madison decided that they couldn't stay here because she was afraid that the second wave came without warning and that they couldn't escape this time. So the children got in the car and started looking for a new place to stay. Jackson said that he knew a place which was high and in the mountains. This was perfect to escape from the tsunami.

They arrived in front of a huge apartment flat with a little smoke shop on the ground floor.

Madison entered the shop where she bought lots of things just in case the food disappeared in one night. When she entered the apartment, she could not find Alexander anywhere. She entered the bedroom and saw Jackson by the window, looking at the sunset. He looked so handsome that she couldn't help herself around him:

"Hi!"

"Oh my God Mads, you scared the hell out of me!" said Jackson with a surprised voice.

"S-Sorry..." muttered Madison quietly.

"No problem beautiful."

Madison looked so surprised that Jackson called her beautiful. She blushed and smiled at him:

"Well, did you want to see me?" asked Jackson carrying Madison out of her thoughts.

"Oh, yes... in fact I was wondering if you had seen Alex. I'm a little bit worried."

"He just got out of the building for a walk. He decided to go out to stop thinking about this situation."

"Oh okay, then I'll go..."

"Stay with me please, come and watch the sunset."

She approached the window silently and started watching the sunset with Jackson. She was falling for him, she always had butterflies in her stomach every time she saw him but she thought that he would never like her:

"I'm ugly," sighed Madison, not realizing that she said that out loud.

"I'm pregnant," said Jackson.

"What?"

"I thought we were stating things that were impossible." said Jackson, smiling.

Then he looked at her and whispered in her ear making her shiver.

"I'm crazy about you Madison Griever..."

He bent down, his lips against her cheek, brushing it lightly; it made her whole body tremble.

"If you want me to stop, tell me now," he whispered.

He traced the line of her cheekbone, and then his lips were against hers. They were kissing like crazy. Like their lives depended on it. His tongue slipped inside her mouth, gentle but demanding, and it was nothing like she had ever experienced and she suddenly understand why people at school describe kissing as melting because every bit of her body dissolved into his. Her fingers gripped his hair, pulling him closer. Her veins throbbed and her heart exploded. She had never wanted anyone like this before, never.

Suddenly they heard a crackling noise. They were staring at the window: the giant wave was approaching the buildings. Madison, frightened, started running outside the smoke shop. Her heart was beating so fast that she thought it will explode in her chest. She couldn't breathe anymore:

"Alexander! Alexander! ... Where are you?" she shouted desperately.

No answer. It was death silence. Jackson came beside her, breathless, and tried to comfort her that Alexander wasn't dead. She was crying all the tears of her body:

"Look Mads, he's gone in the forest up there. The wave will never reach this area! He is safe. Don't worry about him. But if you wanna live, we have to climb up to the forest like he certainly did."

"I'm not going anywhere without him. I'm gonna stay here and wait for him to return and then we can go."

"You can't stay there! You're gonna be drowned by the wave in a few minutes."

"Look, my brother knows that I will never leave without him! So he will come back for sure..." explained Madison.

"He's gone!" shouted Jackson interrupting her.

She couldn't believe what he's just said. Her eyes widely opened, fixed him without any emotions and her mouth was trying to say something but no sound was getting out of it. A lonely tear was running down her cheek. Jackson took her in his arms; she was so cold and trembling. He couldn't feel any energy in her body. She was emotionally dead:

"Now we have to go as fast as we can," he whispered.

As they start running to the forest, the ground started trembling. Another earthquake was coming but this one was much more powerful than the first one:

"Run Madison! Run! And don't look behind you!" shouted Jackson.

Madison did exactly what he had asked her. She never looked behind her once. And when she decided to have a look, Jackson wasn't following anymore. The earthquake quietly stopped. She decided to go back on her steps, she was looking for Jackson. Suddenly her eyes were attracted by a hand crashed under collapses. When she approached, she discovered that it was Jackson's hand because of his little black bracelet that he's always wearing. Horrified, she shouted and whispered between tears:

"In fact, he hasn't gone outside for a walk. You only lost him didn't you? DIDN'T YOU!?" she shouted with tears on her face.

And when she turned back, she saw the bricks crashing down on her.

Alexander was walking into the forest when he saw the second wave unfurling on the land. Panicked, he ran to the smoke shop where Madison was supposed to be. But he couldn't go far from the forest because the wave destroyed everything on its way.

"I don't recognize anything! Where's everyone?" thought Alexander.

Around him, brownish water was covering the ground. His shoes were wet and the cold was catching his feet. All sorts of rubbish were floating on the water. Clothes, rests of road indications, leaves, plastic bags, and some cars were turned upside down. The palm trees were half naked and people disappeared. The boy suddenly started to regret his sister and his friend. Tears were starting to roll down on his pink cheeks. A baby's body was floating a few meters away. His mouth was opened and his face didn't show any sign of life. Slowly he realized that some of the "rubbish" was actually dead people. One was trapped under a car without an arm; another's head was gone and near the baby, a lying women that showed a devastated face. Her body was transpierced by a metal tube blood dripping slowly in the water. Alexander wanted to vomit, his eyes widened as he looked around in panic. He was by himself.

After walking for a while that seemed ages, he finally arrived near his house. But he didn't recognize that it was his house. Alexander was too young to know how to direct himself. He slowly moved towards the house, watching by the broken window if there was anyone. Finally he decided to enter the house. After a few seconds he shouted:

"MOM! DAD! MADS... Where are you? ..."
