Her story is :
She couldn't believe them. They HAD to leave, the opportunity was too good to pass up. "The money," her mother said, "think of the money Arabelle. We'll be able to get you better clothes and a new backpack, maybe even some more books. This is what we've been waiting for," her mother smiled at her, "we have to leave now."
Couldn't she finish the year here? Oh no, no of course not. It was much too far away. Nor could she stay with her grandmother who lived five minutes from the school. "I couldn't bear having you so far away dear. You're coming with us. You'll make new friends, maybe even a new boyfriend?"
"Girlfriend," snarled Arabelle as she wiped tears from her eyes.
Her mother looked uncomfortable, "Yes, sorry dear. A new girlfriend. Go pack dear, we're leaving tomorrow."
Arabelle wiped away more tears and dragged her feet all the way upstairs. She cried silently as she packed up her clothes into a suitcase and her few other belongings (her sketchbook, drawing pencils, earbuds) she had into her old backpack. She left an outfit on the musty old chair next to her bed to fly in.
She kicked back on the bed and stared at the ceiling. How could she ever say goodbye...
Arabelle pulled her ratty jacket closer around herself. Why did they have to pick her dad for the promotion? He was just like every other idiot wasting his away in that building. Didn't his bosses think about what moving would do to her? How it would affect her? Arabelle layed there for a long time, sleepless. Finally she got up, got out her earbuds and listened to music until she fell asleep.
~ ~ ~
It had been the worst two weeks Arabelle had ever lived through. She didn't know anyone here, she was an outcast and no one even tried to talk to her. She doubted anyone even noticed her. And to put more salt on the wound? It was Valentine's Day. A day she thought would finally be a good day for her...
The music blasted through her ears as she tried to simultaneously drown out the world and her depression.
"Hey, girl, open the walls, play with your dolls
We'll be a perfect family.
When you walk away is when we really play
You don't hear me when I say,
'Mom, please wake up
Dad's with a slut, and your son is smoking cannabis.'
No one ever listens, this wallpaper glistens
Don't let them see what goes down in the kitchen.
Places, places, get in your places
Throw on your dress and put on your doll faces.
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains."
As she put her head Arabelle glanced lazily at the last few stragglers getting on the bus. Something was off...She raised her head and looked at the kids as they passed her by. Arabelle almost didn't believe her eyes, because there she was. The last one to get on.
"Good morning," she said to the bus driver.
It as her, it had to be. Arabelle would know her voice anywhere.
She stopped at Arabelle's seat, leaned down and kissed Arabelle like there was no tomorrow.
As she pulled away, her eyes glossy, she whispered, "I transferred." She went to find a seat before the bus started moving.
Arabelle sat there crying and smiling like an idiot as the song switched.
"Somethin' in your eyes, makes me wanna lose myself
Makes me wanna lose myself, in your arms
There's somethin' in your voice, makes my heart beat fast
Hope this feeling lasts, the rest of my life
If you knew how lonely my life has been
And how long I've been so alone
And if you knew how I wanted someone to come along
And change my life the way you've done
It feels like home to me, it feels like I'm all the way back where I come from
A window breaks, down a long, dark street
And a siren wails in the night
But I'm alright, 'cause I have you here with me
And I can almost see, through the dark there is light."
