Sleeping In

One Mushroom Kingdom day, Luigi sat up in bed with a yawn. You wouldn't think there was anything unusual about that, right? Wrong!
I mean, Luigi loved to sleep. Everybody in town knew that, especially after a certain adventure where Luigi had literally been very helpful by just napping all day. But because he always slept so late, Luigi almost never woke up himself. Here's a typical morning for Luigi:

Mario: Luigi! Wake up!

Luigi: ...

Mario(shaking him): Luigi I'm seriously not interested in this game anymore! In fact I never was! It got old after about 20 seconds!

Luigi: *snore*

Mario: Luigi I swear if you do this on some morning when I have something important...

Luigi(groaning): You mean something important like going to McToadbert's for their breakfast sale?

Mario(irritated): I don't need your morning sass. You have 2 minutes to get to the kitchen. No more. No less.

Sometimes when Mario was in a better mood with him he'd let him sleep in till noon, or he'd just barge into the room and bash him with a pillow over the head multiple times. Lately Mario had also been trying other tactics like repeatedly ringing the doorbell and taping an air horn down by his bedside. But today Luigi had woken up all by himself, which he only did when Mario was off on a solo adventure.
With a frown, Luigi jumped out of bed. "One o'clock?" (That's pm.) He glanced at Mario's bed. He was greatly surprised to find his brother still in it, buried in a sea of quilts and pillows and candy wrappers, snoring his head off. He was still wearing his shoes, but that was normal. Mario always slept with his shoes on to keep his socks a mystery because no one knew what they looked like. Anyway! Moving on...
"Mario? Why are you still in bed?" Luigi walked over and shook him, but Mario was like a rock. "Marioooo," he called annoyingly in his ear. Still no response.
Luigi broke into a sinister smile. "So, looks like I'm the one on the right side of the bed today," he boasted to his sleeping brother. "Er...not really...I mean, you're on...never mind!"
With that he jumped on the bed and started dancing around all over it. "I'm in charge! I'm in charge! King of the House! Oh yeah!"
There was no reaction from Mario. "Mario, if you don't wake up, I'm going to play Mario Kart 8 without you," Luigi taunted.
Ordinarily this would have had Mario giving him as close a thing to a death stare as he could muster. But Luigi might as well have been talking to a wall. A short, fat one.
He sighed. "Okay...fine. I'll just go live my life without you."
For the next couple of hours he tried to keep himself busy. He found it harder than he'd thought. He made brunch and ate by himself. He read his new book. He sat on the couch twirling his mustache. He watched a movie. He vacuumed every inch of the carpet. He sat upside down on the couch singing 'The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow'. Around five o'clock, there was a knock on the door. Mario was STILL in bed.
Luigi answered it to find Blue Toad standing there. "Hey Luigi, what's up?"
"If you're looking for Mario, you're wasting your time," Luigi replied. "Sir Snores-a-lot has been in bed all day."
"What do you mean? Is he ill?"
"I don't think so," Luigi said.
"That's not normal!" Blue Toad said as if it wasn't obvious.
"No kidding. Wanna help me wake him up?" Luigi offered. A minute later Luigi and Blue Toad were standing at Mario's bedside.
"That's weird," Blue Toad said. "I don't think I've ever seen Mario sleep before. Like, ever. What did you do to him?"
"Me? I didn't do anything!" Luigi rubbed his chin thoughtfully.
"He looks like he's been drugged or something," Blue Toad commented, poking his arm. "I didn't even think Mario slept at all."
"Of course he does," Luigi snorted. "Not much, but he does." He walked over and turned on the stereo. "You might wanna get some ear muffs," he told Blue Toad. He didn't give him any time to do so before he switched the radio on.
'Never Gonna Give You Up' exploded out of the speakers and nearly broke the sound barrier. The furniture started jolting around like it was the end of the world and Blue Toad and Luigi were flung to the floor.
Blue Toad shrieked something, but Luigi couldn't hear him. He was already crawling towards the radio. After several agonizingly long seconds, he managed to hit the button.
"Okay, let's never do THAT again," Blue Toad gasped. "Now I'm sure all your neighbors hate you."
"But Mario's gotta be up now, right?"
WRONG! He was still snoring his nose off in bed with a blanket over his face. Luigi sank to his knees and wailed pitifully while sad violins played. "WHY MARIO? WHY? HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME? I ALMOST LOST MY SENSE OF HEARING!" Blue Toad rolled his eyes at the audience.
"Well, I hate to miss your pity party, Luigi, but I've gotta hot date with a blue Toadette girl and I don't wanna be late. See ya!" And with that he ran out of the room.
Luigi slumped over and knocked his head on the floor. And he stayed that way for a long, long time.

The next morning Luigi woke himself up again. Or rather, Blue Toad woke him up by ringing the doorbell at 8 am. His hair a wreck and only one overall strap done, Luigi stumbled to the door.
"Hi Luigi! Did Mario ever wake up?"
"No," Luigi groaned. "Do you mind?"
"Oh...okay. Let me know if you need help!" Blue Toad waved as he headed down the sidewalk. Luigi slammed the door shut with a moan. He'd finally given up trying to wake up Mario after ten o'clock last night and gone to bed.
He shuffled back into the bedroom and stared at Mario. In his bed. Asleep. Luigi frowned. Okay, Mario, I've had it, he thought. You are GOING to wake up.
He ran over and launched himself onto the bed, bouncing on Mario's back. "MARIO! IT'S BEEN A FREAKING THIRTY SIX HOURS! WAKE UUUUUUUP!"
And then, to Luigi's great surprise, Mario shifted. "...Luigi? What are you doing?" he grunted, trying to roll over.
Luigi stared in disbelief as he stumbled off the bed. "Mario! You're alive!" He cried dramatically, launching forward and grabbing him in a hug. "I thought I'd lost you!"
Mario raised an eyebrow in confusion. "Yeah...you're up early."
Luigi pulled away and opened his mouth to say something, but stopped. Finally he said, "You know what, why don't I just make breakfast."

That night Mario and Luigi were sitting on the couch in the living room. The day had gone just normally, and Mario hadn't shown any signs of tiredness. Honestly, why would he?!
Mario was scrolling through the tv guide, looking for something he couldn't seem to find. "Hey, where's Monday Night Strikers?" he asked.
Luigi facepalmed. Mario had missed a whole day of his life...
Finally Luigi shook his head. "Mario...it's Tuesday."

Well folks, that was my first official story! I'm not perfectly happy with it, but I think a few parts were pretty strong. What do you think? Lame? OK? Good?
As for references...the 'certain adventure' I'm talking about is Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, just one of many games that hint at Luigi's love of sleeping. And most of you have probably heard of the famous Mario Kart 8 Death Stare...Mario's not really good at doing it though. McToadbert's is my made-up Mario version of McDonald's. 'Monday Night Strikers' is my Mario take on Monday Night Football (obvious Mario Strikers reference there). And okay, maybe Luigi vacuuming is a bit of a Luigi's Mansion reference :)
Please give me your input and vote if you enjoyed! Also if you have ideas or suggestions for future scenarios to turn into stories feel free to let me know and I might use them! Hopefully we'll get at least one update a week or more...

Ciao!
