Chapter 6 - La Push
"Abby, everyone is going down to La Push Beach down by the Quileute rez, you in?" Mei asks her friend when she sank into the seat across from her at lunch.
"Why?" Abby asks, needing more of a backstory.
"There's a big swell coming in so...you know, people want to ride it" Mei says with a shrug, "who knows with people, right?" she says with an eye roll, making Abby chuckle at this before taking a bite out of her apple.
"Okay" Abby agrees, "I'll come with."
"Awesome! Let me go tell Tyler that you're in."
Abby's eyes widen a bit as she panics at this, ready to decline only for Mei disappear at the speed of light.
Damn.
"Great" she says sarcastically, rising from her seat to go and get herself a Sprite from the vending machine. When she turns Edward is standing really close and she wonders when he even got there. "I am so not in the mood for your mood swings today" she says, giving him an unimpressed look.
"My mood swings?" he asks amusedly.
"Yes, the fluctuating of your moods due to hormones" she explains as if he doesn't know what they are, "they give me whiplash."
"I only said that if would be better if we weren't friends, Abby, not that I didn't want to be" he remarks.
"I'm genuinely curious to know if you hear the words that come out of your mouth sometimes" she asks sassily. "I mean what does that even mean?"
"It means that if you were smart, you'd avoid me" he replies.
"I have you as a lab partner in Bio so I can't exactly avoid you there now can I?" she retorts, "so let's say for argument's sake that I'm not smart. What then? Would you finally tell me the truth?"
"Probably not" he says, "I'd rather hear your theories."
Abby opens her Sprite and takes a sip before shooting him a small smirk at this, making him arch a brow at the sight.
"Nope" she says as she pops the p. "Trust works both ways so if you don't speak then neither do I" she says, "goodbye Edward" she states, walking off as he watched her leave, all the while ignoring the thoughts of their fellow students and even his siblings at the sight of them together.
Rosalie was angry.
Emmett on the other hand was very much amused by her 'spunk'.
Alice was excited and eager to know her and Jasper was a little concerned about how much harder it was for Edward to stay away from Abby.

The weather was absolutely freezing and yet people were still suiting up to go and surf.
Abby and Mei were walking together, checking out some tide pools when they are spotted by Mike.
"Abby! Mei!" he greets them with a wave as they waved back when he ran over to them. "Fancy seeing you guys here!" he says with a smile, looking between both of them.
"Sup Mike" Mei says to him, "Abby and I came down here with Tyler and now I'm really regretting having come down in the first place" she added as her teeth chatter.
"Let's get you guys warned up" Mike says to them, leading them to the van that Angela sat in, holding a steaming cup of either coffee or tea.
"Hey, you guys!" Jessica greets them first, "fancy seeing you here" she adds with a nervous laugh when she notices Mike's arms on their shoulders.
"That's what Mike said" Abby says.
"Would you guys like some cocoa? I've got it piping hot and ready to be served" Angela offered kindly.
Mei nodded at this as Angela set aside her cocoa and poured some for them.
"Thanks" Abby says, accepting the cup from her.
"Mei, hey Mei!" someone shouts, causing them to notice a cute, caramel skinned guy with long black hair making his way toward them along with 2 other guys.
"Oh Jacob, hi!" Mei greets him with a wave. "What are you doing here?" she asks him, taking a sip of her cocoa as she did.
"You're on my turf, remember?" Jacob teases with a little grin at this.
"Oh yeah right" Mei says, "must be the cold affecting my brain cells" she says with a snicker, "guys this is Jacob Black. He lives here on the reservation" she shared.
"Hey" Jacob says with a wave, "I'm Jake and this is Sam and Quil" he said, gesturing to the two guys that he was with.
"Are you by any chance related to Billy Black?" Abby asks him.
"Yeah, he's my dad" Jacob says with a nod.
"Tell your dad thanks for me please" Abby says, "I'm Abby Jones—"
"Oh right" Jacob says, shaking her hand, "you're the one my dad sold his truck to" he realised, "she giving you any trouble?"
"Sails like a dream" Abby replied.
Jacob laughs lightly at this and Abby also shoots him a small smile at this. He seems sweet.
"Hey, so Abby" Mike quickly spoke up as they turn to face him, "I'm surprised that you didn't invite Cullen."
"Why? Should I have invited him?" Aby asks him, arching a brow at this.
"N-No, I mean, if you wanted to" Mike splutters out, "you two seem close these days is all."
"She's just being nice, Newton" Mei says with an eyeroll.
"I think it would have been sweet if you had invited him" Angela says, "the Cullens are closed off enough as it is."
"They choose to do that because they're weird" Mike retorts.
"You got that right" Sam says.
"You guys know them?" Abby asks, sounding a little surprised by this.
She wonders how that is since the Cullens seem so — withdrawn.
"The Cullens don't come here" Sam says simply and sternly and it's frank enough for Abby to not want to ask anymore questions.
Abby does note the look that Jacob shoots Sam and wonders what it could mean.
"I wanna walk around a bit more, anyone up to join me?" she asks.
"I'll come" Jacob says before Mike can speak up, much to Abby's amusement as they started walking off together.
She warms her hands with her cup of cocoa.
"This beach is really beautiful" she says as a way of easing into conversation.
"Sure is" Jake says with a grin, "I've seen it my entire life and it's still as beautiful as the first time" he comments. "So how's the truck really treating you?" he asks.
"It's a good truck" Abby admits, "strong and sturdy but it's got a bit of a dent from an...incident" she admits sheepishly, feeling guilty about denting what used to be his father's truck even though it technically belonged to her and Tia now.
"I could buff that out for you if you'd like" he offered.
"You're a mechanic?"
"Who do you think managed to get that old rust bucket to work in the first place?" he asks teasingly, making Abby chuckle in response, "my dad would kill me if he heard me say that" he says. "He loved that thing" Jacob says, "not to say that he still loves it now" he quickly added, not wanting to make her uncomfortable about driving the truck.
"Why'd he give it up?" Abby wonders, reassuring him with a smile that there was no harm at all.
"He uh — he got into a car accident and now he's in a wheelchair" Jake admits.
"Oh" Abby says, "oh Jake, I'm so sorry, I didn't—"
"Nah, it's cool" Jake reassures her.
"I'm so sorry" Abby says once again, feeling bad for having asked in the first place.
"Abby" he says, "it's fine" he reassures her as she nodded a bit at this, taking a sip of her cocoa before they walked in silence for a few seconds.
"Hey so what did your friend mean about the Cullens not coming down here?" she asks him, trying not to sound too curious.
"Oops, caught that did you?" he says, "I'm not really supposed to say anything."
"I can keep a secret" Abby reassures him with a smile which Jake returned.
"It's an old scary story" he admits, "did you know the story that Quileutes are supposedly descended from wolves?"
"No, I didn't but that sounds so cool" Abby says, "like actual wolves?" she asks as Jacob chuckles at this.
"Yeah, that's the legend of our tribe" he says.
"So what's the story about the Cullens?"
"Apparently they're descended from this...like enemy clan" he shares, "my great grandfather, the chief, found them hunting on our land but they claimed to be something different so we made a treaty with them."
"But didn't they just move here?" Abby questions aloud.
"Or just moved back" Jacob commented.
Abby takes a sip of her cocoa at this, intrigued by the story.
"Okay" she says, "so what was this treaty?" she asks him.
"You're taking all of this surprisingly well" he notes.
"I've heard my fair share of...old legends" she commented as she and Jake share a smile at this. "I interrupted you. Please continue" she says.
"Okay, so if they promised to stay off Quileute lands then we wouldn't expose what they really are to the pale faces" he shared, gesturing to some random white guy who was just coming out of the water.
Jacob pauses dramatically and Abby shivered at what he's shared with her.
Some girl screams, causing Abby to turn sharply to face the source only to see Angela run past them with Eric not too far behind, chasing her with a dead crustacean.
Jake and Abby both chuckle lightly at this and start to head back to the group.
"So what do the stories say that they are?" Abby asks him.
"It's just that, Abby" he says with a snicker, "stories" he stated.
Abby nods at this, deciding not to ask anymore.
"So, tell me more about yourself" he adds.
"Uh — well, I'm Abby" she says, "I live with my sister and aunt" she shares, "and yeah, that's basically it" she added with a casual shrug, making Jacob snicker lightly at this.
"Short and sweet" he teases as she chuckles along with him.
"Yeah" she says, "my sister would really like this place" she states, thinking of Tia, "especially your scary stories" she says to Jake.
"Then next time you should totally bring her along" he suggests with a bright grin.
"I will" Abby says.
"Abby!" Mei calls out for her when they drew closer, "Mike and the others are headed back and they're wondering if we want to return with them, what do you say?"
"Yeah, sure" Abby says. "Thanks for the story Jacob."
"Anytime" he replied, "see you guys around!" he said as he and his friends walk off when the others echo their chorused byes.
"So, what did you think of Jake?" Mei asks her.
"He's sweet" Abby says, "and a really great storyteller" she adds, thinking about everything that Jacob had shared with her.
She can't help recalling all the stories her grandmother would share with her and how she'd always say: "legends ring with truth and where there's smoke there was definitely a fire."
⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️
"Hey, how was the trip to the beach?" Tia asks her sister when she made her way into their house.
"It was fun" Abby says, "next time you should come with."
"Maybe next time I will" Tia says, changing the channel on the TV.
Abby heads to her room and drops her backpack on her bed before grabbing her laptop and opening it, running a quick Google search.
She types Quileute legends in her search engine and the first thing that pops up is a link for the Thunderbird and Whale Book Store which is conveniently located in Port Angeles, which is just a town over.
Abby clicks on it and sees the books on their website, some of which include fascinating Quileute stories and Abby finds herself going down a rabbit hole until her aunt calls her down for dinner.
She closes her laptop and goes downstairs to eat dinner with her sister and aunt.
⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️
The sun was out for what feels like the first time in a lifetime and so Abby sat outside with Mei as they enjoyed the sun and soaked it up.
Abby had noticed that Edward and his siblings weren't in attendance today but she still searched around as if she'd spot them.
"They aren't here" Mei speaks up from her spot beside her, making Abby turn to face her at this, "whenever the weather's nice the Cullens disappear" she shared as she continued to soak up the sunshine.
Everyone was outside considering how rare it is for the sun to come out in Forks.
"They just ditch? I'm almost jealous."
"I know right" Mei says, "Dr. And Mrs. Cullen always take them camping and hiking and stuff" she comments, "I suggested that to my mom and well seeing as I'm here right now you can wager a guess on how that idea went down" she adds, making Abby chuckle a bit at her comment.
"Hey guys!" Jessica and Angela greet them, making their way toward them as Mei groans softly at this.
"What? I thought that you liked them" Abby says.
"Angela mostly" Mei retorts.
"Hey" Abby greets them when they all sat together.
"So Mei, have you changed your mind about attending homecoming?" Angela asks her.
"No" Mei says in conviction, "still not going" she adds.
"It'll suck not having you guys there" Angela says to them with a pout.
She sounds more genuine than Jessica had been.
"Who are you going with Angie?" Mei asks her.
"Eric asked me" Angela admits, blushing at the memory of it.
"That's wonderful!" Abby says, happy for her.
"I know right!" Jessica says, "we should totally go to Port Angeles to get some new dresses before all the good stuff runs out" Jessica suggests to Angela.
Hearing this piques Abby's interest as she wanted to go down to Port Angeles in order to get the book that spoke of Quileute legends.
"Would you guys mind if we came with you?" Abby asks them, gesturing between her and Mei.
"I'm not a huge fan of dress shopping or shopping in general but you guys go right ahead" Mei says to them.
"Yeah, you can totally come with us, Abby!" Jessica suggests, "and help us pick out our dresses!" she added excitedly as Abby nods at this.
If it means getting a free ride to Port Angeles then she can suffer through going dress shopping.
"Yeah we can totally use your opinion" Angela agrees with a sweet smile.
⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️
Abby went down to Port Angeles with Jessica and Angela in Jessica's car.
Tia drove the truck back home, more than happy to drive it since it was usually Abby who did the driving for them.
The ride down to Port Angeles wasn't actually bad and Abby chatted with Jess and Angela most of the way down.
When they got to the dress shop she was more than happy to offer her own opinions about dresses and which ones would be better looking for either of the girls.
"You're actually really good at this, Abby" Angela compliments her tastes.
"The credit doesn't really go to me" Abby says with a shrug, "Tia is the one who makes me watch all those fashions shows with her."
"Speaking of which, will Tia be attending homecoming?" Jessica asks.
"Yeah" Abby nods, "she's even got her dress picked out and everything" she adds, "she's the fashionista between the both of us."
Tia always had been the fashionista between the two sisters.
Some guys passing by the store knock on the window and catcall Jess and Angela, who blush at this, secretly happy with the attention.
"Oh my..." Angela says, turning away shyly while Jessica soaks up the attention.
"So why didn't Lauren come with you guys?" Abby asks them curiously.
"She doesn't like you" Jessica admits simply.
"Jess!" Angelina admonishes her friend.
"What? She doesn't" Jessica says in her defense, "it's 'cause she thinks that you like Tyler" she explains to Abby.
"That couldn't be farther from the truth" Abby says, "Tyler's nice but I don't like him like that."
"But aren't you two going to prom together though?" Angela asks her.
Abby chokes on air at this.
"No" she denies, "absolutely not!" she adds firmly.
"That's why Lauren didn't come" Jessica says to her, "because that's what she heard" she adds.
"Someone needs to tell her that I'm not her competition" Abby retorts, "she can keep Tyler all to herself" she says. "I'll see you guys later okay? I actually have to go somewhere for a sec" she adds.
"Sure" Angela says with a nod, "Jess and I will keep looking for other dresses and then we can all meet up for something to eat at the Bloated Toad" she adds, referring to the restaurant they had previously picked out.
"Sounds awesome" Abby says to them, "oh and make sure the dresses have designs similar to the ones you're wearing because they really suit you guys" she suggests.
"Thanks" Jessica says, flicking some of her auburn hair behind her back as she inspected herself in the mirror.
Abby made her way to the bookstore where she'd find the book that she was looking for.
The store was on the other side of town but Abby doesn't mind walking. She could have asked Jessica to drop her off there when they first arrived but that would have been rude and obvious and would have been a dead giveaway about why she really came so she politely accompanied the two as they shopped for their homecoming dresses first.
Some of the dresses were God awful and she always tried to kindly and diplomatically tell them to ditch the dresses and look for something else.
If shopping was something Mei liked doing then she would have probably done something like make gagging noises or imitate a gunshot to the head at some of the designs that Abby had seen Jessica and Angela wearing.
Mei was dramatic like that but Abby does miss her friend's presence because Mei always makes everything a thousand times funnier.
