Chapter 5 - Field Trip

How is anyone this beautiful?!

The man that stood before her was otherworldly beautiful with blonde hair and golden brown eyes just like Edward's.

His face is kind and Abby suddenly realizes what Mei meant when she said nurses go crazy over the doctor and why Viv sounded like she had a crush when she spoke of the man.

He was movie star handsome.

"Dr. Cullen" Viv says in relief when she sees the man, who made his way into the E.R.

"I've got this one, Jackie" he says to the other doctor who nods at this with a smile directed to him before handing him Abby's chart.

"Nice to finally meet you both" Jackie says to the two teen sisters with a kind smile as Abby nodded at this while Tia shoots her a smile that doesn't really reach her eyes, too worried about her sister.

Doctor Cullen reviews Abby's chart while she watched him carefully. He steps closer to her and touches the back of her head, making her flinch slightly at the action.

"Tender?" he asks her in a kind voice.

"A little, yeah."

"You have a knot growing back there but luckily your x-rays show no indication of a concussion" he adds.

The other doctor already told her this but she nods as if hearing it for the first time.

"I'm so sorry Abby, I really–" Tyler doesn't get to finish his sentence because Tia pulls on the curtain separating him from her sister.

Abby may have forgiven him for almost killing her but she isn't.

"It would have been a completely different story if Edward
hadn't knocked me out of the way" Abby remarks, still observing the man.

"Edward? Your son, Dr. Cullen?" Viv asks him.

"I didn't see him" Tia speaks up, looking at her sister in concern while Abby continued to observe Dr. Cullen's body language.

"It was all quite amazing" Abby mutters, "he got to me so fast and yet he was nowhere near me" she said as her eyes lock briefly with those of Dr. Cullen.

"As long as you're safe" the man replies with a kind smile, which only serves to frustrate her even more because she can tell that he definitely knows something.

"Doctor, may I please have a word?" Viv asks him.

He nodded at this as they walked off to speak in private whilst Abby's eyes land on her sister.

"You also thinking that I'm losing it?" she asks her, knowing that Viv was probably talking with Dr. Cullen about her 'hallucination' of Edward.

"I don't know what to think" Tia replies. "I didn't see Edward anywhere there and yet I know that you aren't crazy."

"Well that's comforting. Somewhat" Abby says in a partially sarcastic tone before the two sisters share a light laugh at this.

Abby is walking out the treatment center with her aunt and sister when she spots Edward standing with his father and sister, Rosalie, and given the angry look on Rosalie's face she can only surmise that their exchange is a little heated.

Edward stops talking when he spots her as their eyes lock briefly.

"Let's take this into my office" Dr. Cullen says to his children when he also spots the Ericsson/Jones family.

"I'll be right back I just need to speak to Edward for a second" Abby says to her aunt and sister.

"Abby–" Tia moves to protest only to snap her mouth shut when she sees the determined look on her sister's face. "Fine" she says, holding her hands up in surrender.

"Sorry to interrupt" Abby says as she approached the trio, "Edward, could I please have a private word with you?"

He nodded at this before his father and sister walked off but not before Rosalie shoots her with a small glare, which she ignores but Tia takes this as a sign to glare back at the blonde on her sister's behalf.

"Before I thank you I need you to answer this question first, how did you get to me so quickly?"

"I was standing right beside you Abby."

"No" she says, refusing to be played for a fool. "You were next to your car" she states, "across the parking lot" she says in conviction.

"No, I wasn't" Edward says firmly, stepping a little closer to her.

With the way he was looking into her eyes it was almost as if he expected her to just accept what he says to be the gospel truth.

"Yes, you were" Abby says firmly, standing her ground.

"You're confused, Abby" he says, "you hit your head."

"I may have hit my head but I'm not confused" Abby says to him, "I know what I saw" she says, emphasizing each word clearly and precisely.

"And what exactly was that?" Edward asks her, his tone almost patronizing and mocking.

"You...you stopped Tyler's van with your....with your hand" Abby replies, "you pushed it away."

"No one will believe that" Edward says to her, looking angry again.

"I wasn't going to tell anyone" Abby says to him, "and I won't, but don't think for a second that by trying to gaslight me you can make me forget what I saw."

"Can't you just thank me and get over it?" he asks her, looking a little annoyed with her insistence at what she saw.

"Thank you" Abby says to him when their gazes lock as they looked at one another.

"You're not going to let this go. Are you?" he accuses her, feeling angry, defensive and stubborn.

"No" Abby admits.

"Well then I hope that you enjoy disappointment" he says, walking away as Abby watched him leave before stubbornly turning away from him and making her way back toward her aunt and sister who were looking at her in intrigue and slight concern.

"Everything okay?" Viv asks, seeing the annoyance on her niece's face.

"Fine" Abby replies, which means that she's lying. "Let's just go" she uttered as Viv nods at this before they headed for the door.

Tia turned to look behind her, wondering what her sister and Edward were arguing about and when she turns, she sees Edward looking their way.

His and Tia's eyes meet before she turns away from him to face her sister when she sees his eyes on Abby.

When she turned to face him again he was no longer standing where he had been standing a few seconds ago and Tia shakes her head at this as she helped her sister to their aunt's car.

"What were you two arguing about in there?" Tia wondered when Viv made her way to the driver's seat of her car.

"You were right. I imagined Edward's presence there" Abby says with a sigh, "he wasn't" she states just before Viv climbed into the driver's seat and the conversation between the two sisters ended just like that.

Tia can tell that Abby is lying but why deny something she had been so firm on just a few minutes ago?

⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️

"You okay?" Tia asks her sister in concern after she and Viv helped Abby into her bed even though she kept citing that she was perfectly okay.

"Yeah."

"Will it bother you if I sleep in your bed with you?" Tia asks her sister, taking Abby aback at this.

The last time the two of them shared the same bed was a few days after their mom died.

Tia had been sobbing nonstop and eventually Abby went into her room to comfort her.

It was a long time before Tia fell asleep and Abby wound up sharing the bed with her sister, wanting to be there for her if she needed her.

"No" Abby reassures her sister, "not at all" she adds.

She knows that part of the reason that Tia wanted to share the same bed was because she was worried about her and wanted to make sure that Abby didn't have blood leaking from her ears in her sleep and partially because the incident brought back sad memories of their mom.

"Thanks" Tia says.

⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️

When the two sisters fell asleep that night the shadows of Abby's bedroom seemed to move as someone appeared from the shadows.

Edward.

He watches the rise and fall of Abby's chest, who held her sister close as they slept soundly.

It seems that even in sleep she is protective of her sister.

Abby stirs a bit as if sensing his presence but he had already left the room, watching over her and her sister protectively from outside the Ericsson home.

Abby gasps, eyes bolting open when she sensed something but when she tries to move she finds that Tia was sleeping on her arm.

She closes her eyes at this, despite knowing that her arm would hurt in the morning and continued to sleep while holding her sister close.

⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️

Today the Biology class was taking an excursion off the school grounds and Abby stood near her truck, observing everyone who appeared excited about the trip.

She was standing in the exact same spot that she'd been standing in when her car accident happened.

She was listening to the soothing voice of Billie Holiday on her iPod and her eyes land on the ground as she got flashbacks of everything.

The van headed straight for her.

Edward's hand pushing the van away and creating a dent in Tyler's van.

The way she gripped tightly to him, looking at him in shock.

She remembers it all so clearly and vividly.

Her eyes meet Edward's from across the parking lot where he stood next to one of his his sisters, Alice.

Just like he had on the day of the incident.

The irony of this is not lost on Abby.

Mike steps into her line of sight and she's partially surprised not to have sensed him until he was literally in front of her.

She takes out her earphones and stopped her music so that she would hear what he says.

"Look! You're moving! You're alive!" Mike says to her, imitating Dr. Frankenstein when his monster came to life.

"Yeah, it was a false alarm as it turns out" she says with an easy going shrug before pocketing her earphones.

"Well that's good" Mike says, "it would have sucked if you had died" he comments. "And look, I don't want to be a total jerk considering what happened. I know that it's like a month away but how'd you feel about coming to homecoming with me?" he asks her.

Abby chokes on air at this.

"Homecoming?"

"Yeah" Mike says, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly, neither of them aware of the ears that were eavesdropping on their conversation. "So what do you say?"

"When's the homecoming again?" Abby asks him, pulling out her phone and going to her calender, pretending to see if she had anything planned even though she knows that she doesn't.

"Next month. On the 13th" Mike says sheepishly.

"Oh man" Abby says, feigning disappointment. "I'm really sorry Mike but I can't."

"Oh, you have plans or–?"

"I have plans to go to Seattle that day" Abby says, "I'm meeting up with some people from Phoenix" she adds. "I haven't seen them in what feels like ages. You understand, right?"

"Oh – uh – yeah totally" Mike says, sounding really disappointed by this.

"I'm really sorry Mike" she says apologetically.

"No, it's uh – it's cool" Mike replies, "there's still prom though, right?" he questioned hopefully.

Abby is saved from answering this by Mr. Molina calling for them as they made their way toward him.

They hand him their permission slips before Abby sends her sister a quick text telling her to tell anyone who asks her about Homecoming that she knows about her trip to Seattle.

The text started with no questions asked, which is what the two sisters said to one another in instances when one had to help the other without asking questions about who, what or why.

"Abby!" Jessica calls for her as she turns to face her, "come sit with us" Jessica invited her.

Abby nodded at this before making her way toward Jessica, walking past the Cullens.

It takes everything inside her not to look at Edward but she succeeds at this and gives herself a pat on the back for it.

⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️

"So, are you going to homecoming?" Jessica asks her excitedly when she sat beside her on the bus.

"I can't" Abby says, "I already have plans for the day" she adds, "It totally skipped my mind until Mike reminded me."

"Oh" Jessica says, "well, it'll suck without you that's for sure" she said but Abby knows that she was only saying that to be polite.

"Maybe next time."

Jessica nods at this before she started talking Abby's ear off about homecoming and the kind of dress she wants.

Abby listened kindly, more than used to listening to people rant and vent to her since that's mostly what Tia did.

⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️

The Biology field trip was to the community college greenhouse.

Abby almost wanted to laugh at Mr. Molina's excitement at being there.

He was like a child in a toy store as he and the tour guide showed them around the greenhouse.

Mr. Molina shows some students how to use the compost machine while other students messed around.

"Come on Eric, shove that compost deep down" he says, "that's it" he adds as the machine gurgles and spins, "okay now Tyler take a big steaming cup of compost tea" he says as Tyler holds up the cup with the 'compost tea'. "Ladies and gentlemen this is recycling at its most basic level – hey don't drink that!" he added when Tyler hands the tea to one of his friends who sniffed it before moving to drink it as some of the other students chuckled at this.

Abby snorts amusedly at her fellow Biology classmates' crazy antics before walking around the greenhouse, looking at the different species of plants.

Botany was something that her grandmother was fond of as evidenced by the roses growing in the front and back yards of her home.

"Pretty, aren't they?" a voice says from behind her and when turned to face the source she's met by the sight of Edward.

"Yeah" she admits, surprised that he came up to her first.

She was sure that their battle of the wills would last forever with neither side willing to concede.

"Excuse me" she says politely, moving to walk off.

"I take it you don't like being around me then, Abby?" he asks her, making her freeze in her steps at this.

"No" she admits, "not for so long as you're intent on lying to me" she replied. "How'd you stop the van, Edward?"

"Adrenaline rush" he retorts, "very common. You can google it."

"And again with the lies" Abby says sigh an exhausted sigh, moving to walk away from him only to stumble over something.

Edward steadies her, inhaling some of her scent, which causes him to clench his jaw at this as she meets his eyes.

"Thanks" Abby says to him when he removes his hand from her arm after their gazes locked briefly. "I really can't understand you" she mutters before walking away from him.

Jessica made her way toward her.

"Abby, guess who just asked me out to homecoming?!" she questions excitedly, all but ignoring the fact that Abby had been speaking with Edward Cullen.

"Do you really want me to guess or are you just teasing?" Abby asks playfully as Jessica chuckles at this.

She was actually a little bearable when she wasn't with Lauren.

"I thought Mike was going to ask you, Abby" she says, "is it gonna be weird?"

"Not at all, Jess" Abby says with a kind smile, "zero weirdness" she assures her, "you guys would be great together."

"I know, right?" Jessica gushes ecstatically before making her way over to Angela.

Some of the students chase each other with some worms and Tyler tries to chase Abby with one too.

"Tyler, if you favour having your life you will keep that thing away from me!" she warns him, to which his response was to chuckle.

"Relax Abbs, it's just a little worm."

"Abbs?" she asks incredulously.

"It's my nickname for ya, cute right?" he says with a playful wink.

"Yes, I quite like being named after the muscles of the stomach" Abby says in a dry, deadpan tone.

Tyler chortled at this before he went back to chasing his friends with the worm as others made grossed out noises at this while she stepped out of the greenhouse.

"What did you mean?" Edward asks Abby, basically appearing out of nowhere and falling into stride with her, "when you said that you can't understand me?"

"I'll answer your questions when you answer mine" Abby retorts.

"It's best if we weren't friends" he says to her, which Abby sighs at before turning to face him as he did the same.

"Are you only now getting this epiphany?" she asks him with barely contained anger, "if you'd figured this out sooner then maybe you could have just let the van crush me and saved yourself all of this regret" she comments, feeling a little hurt by his words.

"You think that I regret saving you?" he snaps angrily, clenching his fist at this.

"I know that you do" Abby says stubbornly.

"You don't know anything" Edward says furiously.

"Then why don't you enlighten me" Abby says just as angrily. "This is exactly what I mean when I say that I can't understand you" she says, "you say that you don't want us to be friends and yet if I say that you regret saving me then somehow I'm the bad guy?"

Alice appears at her brother's side less than a second later, making Abby's eyes land on her.

"The bus is leaving" she speaks up, "Hi Abby, I'm Alice, will you be riding with us?" she asks sweetly in a musical voice.

"No" Edward interjects coldly, "our bus is full."

"Sorry" Abby sincerely apologizes to his sister with a half-smile before she stalking off, but not before meeting Edward's gaze one last time.

Alice sees the remorse on his face when he climbed onto their bus as Abby climbed onto the other.
