Chapter 4 - The Accident
Abby had planned to confront Edward Cullen when she saw him again.
She was going to take Tia's advice and take the high road and apologize to him for offending him if that's what his problem with her was.
She had even rehearsed what she was going to say to him.
She had everything down on lock but he didn't arrive on the following day.
And the day after that.
His siblings did but never him.
Sometimes she'd find herself throwing a glance at their table as if he'd magically pop up but he never did.
A whole week passed and in all that time she wondered if maybe he wasn't coming anymore because of her but decided that would be ridiculous.
He wouldn't drop out of school just because of her.
Whenever she got those thoughts she'd chastise herself for being self-centered and thinking that things revolved around her.
She and Tia had a chance to make it up to Charlie Swan for being so standoffish and cold the last time he came by once again inviting him to join their family for dinner and Abby liked seeing him with her aunt.
He was clearly an awkward man but he tried not to be for Viv's sake and Abby thought that was cute of him.
He even told them about how he had a daughter who was Abby's age and how she lived with her mother and step-father in Arizona, which Tia said was an awesome coincidence since that's where they lived before.
"Forks weather is terrible for my hair" Tia complained, pulling out her umbrella when she and Abby climbed out of the pickup truck that Viv bought for them from one of Charlie's friends on the Quileute reservation, Billy Black.
"Oh no, poor baby" Abby playfully mocked her sister, pulling on her own hat and shielding her head with her own umbrella.
"Bite me, Abby" Tia sneers out to her sister, but not harshly.
Abby snorts at this when they made their way to the school building where Mei was already waiting for Abby while Tia went over to her own friends.
"Rumour has it that L'Oreal is back" Mei informs Abby when they headed toward Biology even though they didn't share the class. "If you want I can confront him for you–"
"No" Abby says despite having been a little surprised to hear what Mei said. "He's not worth it" she says, offering Mei a small smile at this, "I've realised that if Edward Cullen has a problem with me then that's his own problem" she adds, "besides, fighting one sided wars must be pretty boring" she remarked.
"And that's why you're the better woman than I, my fair lady" Mei says, making Abby snort at her friend's silliness. "See ya!" she said with a wave when she dropped Abby off at the Biology class and made her way to her class.
As expected, Edward Cullen sat at the table he shared with Abby and she exhaled deeply as if to prepare herself only to be cut off by Mike making his way toward her.
"Abby" he calls out for her as she turned to face him, "hey" he greets her.
"Hi Mike" she replied.
"You – uh – You look really pretty today" he adds, "not to say that you don't look pretty on other days" he quickly amended.
"No harm, no foul" she assures him with an awkward pat on the back before making her way to her desk as Mike internally kicks himself for being so awkward and weird when he went to his spot.
She sinks into her seat and started pulling out her books as she stared ahead of her, ready to ignore the boy seated beside her.
"Hello" a soft, smooth voice says, making Abby slowly and comically turn her head to face the source of the greeting.
No, she was not wrong.
Edward Cullen was actually talking to her and was facing her.
"I didn't have a chance to introduce myself last week. My name is Edward Cullen" he introduced himself as Abby stared at him, wondering if she should give him a taste of what he'd done last week but eventually deciding against it.
"Hi" she greets him politely, "I'm Abby Jones" she said, even though she's already gone through the whole introducing herself thing.
Hell, he'd been here last week when Mr. Molina made her do it.
Mr. Molina saves them from a more awkward exchange when he told them about what that day's classes consisted of.
Meanwhile, the cogs in Abby's mind were grinding as she wondered if she had been wrong about him being racist.
Mr. Molina started handing out slides to the class.
"Onion root tip cells" he informs them, "that's what's on your slides right now" he says, "I want you all to separate and label them into the phases of mitosis" he stated as Abby tried to ignore the feeling that Edward was glancing her way. "And the first partners to get it right will win the golden onion" he commented excitedly as he held up the golden, spray painted onion.
Abby smiles a bit at the man's enthusiasm for his subject matter.
"Okay everyone, let's go. Tick tock" he said as the class groaned at this.
"Ladies first" Edward says, gently pushing the microscope toward Abby, who turns to face him. "I-I'm sorry about my behaviour last week. I've come to realize that it was rather rude of me" he added further, surprising her.
"Everyone has bad days, I guess" she replied with a little shrug before sliding the slide into place and looking into the microscope to see what the first slide consisted of. "Prophase" she says when she drew back.
"May I?" Edward asks her politely.
Abby nods at this as she gently pushed the microscope towards him, careful not to touch him in case he's not a fan of physical contact.
"Prophase" he agrees after looking into the lens.
"Like I said" Abby whispered when she wrote down the answer while he removed the slide and slid the next one in.
"Are you uh..." he says, clearing his throat, "are you enjoying the weather?" he finally asked as if searching for the right words to say to her.
He looked like asking her that simple question was taking a lot out of him.
"What's not to love about a town where it rains more than the sun shines?" she retorts sarcastically.
His lips tilt into a small smirk of amusement at her words.
"I take it that's a no then?" he says, his voice light and slightly teasing.
"It's more of an...I like it as much as the next person" she replies when he looked into the lens.
"Anaphase" he says.
"May I?"
He gently pushes the microscope toward her as she took a look through the lens.
"Anaphase" she agrees.
"Like I said" he says with a miniscule smirk at this, throwing her own words back at her as she bit back a smile.
"You've been gone" she commented lightly, careful not to seem too interested or nosy whilst writing the answer down.
"Out of town" he replies, "for personal reasons" he commented precisely, though his tone was not impolite as if he was rudely shutting her down or anything like it.
"I can show you what we did if you want to see" she suggests kindly, taking him aback at this as he looked at her in awe for a split second before quickly schooling his features.
"I'd like that. Thank you" he replied gratefully while she slid the anaphase slide out and slides the next one in.
Edward knows about how cancer had claimed Abby's mother's life a few months ago so he's careful not to ask her anything too personal or painful.
"Interphase" she says, drawing back from the lens to write it down, "would you like to look?"
"No" he says, "I trust your judgment" he replied, making her turn to face him in surprise at this.
"Thanks. I guess" she added the last part under her breath as Mr. Molina made his way toward them when he realized that they had finished.
"Excellent work, you two" he praised them, "you make a good team" he added, collecting the slides.
"Thank you sir" Abby replied before he walked off, "I can show you the work now if you'd like?" she says, to which Edward nods.
She pushed her book between them, turning to face him fully now before opening to the work they'd done last week.
"Would you mind if I took pictures?" he asks politely.
He spoke so elegantly and politely, each word he spoke was so precise and velvety.
He spoke in a way that was unlike that of a lot of their peers.
Abby feels bad for thinking that as it felt like she was calling ALL their peers impolite and unelegant but she can't help that it's how she felt.
"No, of course not" she replied as he pulled out his phone and started taking pictures of her work.
"You have very beautiful handwriting" he compliments.
Abby felt her neck turn grow warm at the praise.
Plenty of people have told her this but it seems...strangely more complimentary coming from him.
"Uh – thank you" she replied sheepishly.
The rest of the class finish with their work and after grading their work Mr. Molina hands Edward and Abby the golden onion when the bell rang.
"Congratulations to you both" he says to them.
"Thank you sir" they respond in sync before stepping out of his class.
Edward notes the frown on Mike's face when he sees how close he stood next to Abby.
"Do you want it?" she asked him when they made their way out of the class.
"You can keep it" Edward says to her.
"You know, if we cut it then we each get to keep our...awesome prize" she suggested.
Edward chuckles lightly at this while Abby internally pats herself on the back for managing a laugh out of him.
His first and genuine laugh since they've been talking.
"I insist" he said.
She nodded at this before they resumed walking alongside one another in the hallway.
People stare but Abby has started getting used to that by now, although these stares are probably different because she's walking with Edward.
"Once again I'm truly sorry about my appalling behaviour last week" he says, feeling ashamed with how he'd reacted to her.
He overheard her talking with her friend and realized that she must think he dislikes her, which can't be farther from the truth.
"You've apologized like 5 times already" Abby says with a smile, "and for the fifth and hopefully final time. It's no big deal."
At least now she knows that he doesn't hate her.
"This is me" she says when they reached her locker before opening it and placing their prize inside. When she turns to face him she realizes that his eyes looked a whole lot different than what she recalled. "Did you get contacts?" she blurts out before she can stop herself.
"No" he replies, tensing slightly at her question.
"Your eyes" she starts, "they were black before and now they're like this golden brown."
"Oh yeah. It's the fluorescents" he replies.
He abruptly turns and walks away without a goodbye, leaving Abby to watch him leave in confusion.
Had she said something wrong?
He was giving her whiplash.

"News on the block is that you were seen walking with Edward Cullen" Mei informs Abby when she sat at their table where they are — luckily for them – not joined by any of the others who now liked to sit with them at lunch.
"We're lab partners in Bio so..." Abby trails off with a shrug before going back to reading her worn edition of To Kill A Mockingbird.
"Well you know how fast news travels in small towns" Mei says, playing with her salad, "and small schools" she adds, "and amongst small minded people" she added further as Abby snorts at this. "You know what...when people are bored and have nothing better to talk about!–" she exclaimed loudly as some people look at them, "then news travels" she added in s softer tone, making Abby laugh at how she called out the people that had been eavesdropping as they quickly returned to their own good and conversations. "So I take it he apologized then?" she asks, searching around the cafeteria for the Cullens only to find that they weren't there.
"Yeah" Abby admits, not mentioning that he left her feeling more confused than ever though.
"Well at least that's something" Mei says, "because I was totally going to egg his car if he didn't."
"You were not" Abby laughs in disbelief.
"Yeah, I totally was" Mei says stubbornly.
"You're serious, aren't you?" Abby asks her friend when she lifted her eyes from reading her book to face Mei.
"As a heart attack, baby!" Mei replied with a snicker, "my mom hates it when I say that by the way" she revealed before she and Abby share a brief chuckle at this and going back to talking about the happenings of their day so far.
⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️
Abby was playing music on her iPod, standing by her truck and waiting for her sister to finish up with her friends but as always Tia was droning on and on about one thing or another, probably catching up on some freshly acquired gossip.
Abby impatiently tapped her foot on the ground.
Her eyes lock with those of Edward who stood across the parking lot from her, standing next to his silver Volvo with his siblings before she looked away to face her sister as if she could magically will her to end her chit chat so that they can leave.
She pulls her iPod out of her pocket to choose the next song when suddenly the loud screeching of tyres filled the air.
She lifts her eyes to face the source only to realize that there was a van headed right for her.
Tyler was driving and he appeared to have lost control off his van, shielding his eyes in horror when he realized that he was going to hit her.
Her feet were glued to the ground and she inhaled sharply at this, unable to move given how everything happens in the blink of an eye.
"Abby!" she hears her sister shout frantically just before she's pushed to the ground, dropping her iPod as Edward pushed Tyler's van from colliding into her while time seemed to freeze.
The van instead smashed into the back of her truck and Abby looked between the dent created by Edward's hand when he pushed the van away from her – and Edward himself.
That's impossible, she remarks internally as Edward turned to face her.
Abby stared back into his eyes in shock, looking truly shaken to her core while clutching tightly to him.
She could see him. She could touch him.
This is truly Edward Cullen.
But he was meant to be standing across the parking lot from her so how in the hell did he get to her so fast?
"Someone call an ambulance!" Tia can be heard shouting, breaking hers and Edward's momentary eye lock.
He disappeared as quickly as he had appeared, fading into the background almost instantly as Mike, Eric and Tia ran over to her.
"Abby! Are you okay?! Where are you hurt?!" Tia frantically fussed over her older sister, sounding like she was on the verge of a break down.
"Are you okay?! Are you hurt?!" Mike also shouted in question.
"What happened?! Did anyone see what happened?!" Eric asked frantically.
Their voices all seemed to blend into one loud blur.
But in all of this Abby's mind was still left reeling at what had just happened.
⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️
Tia had ridden in the ambulance with Abby.
Mike and Eric would have followed too but Abby reassured them all that she was fine.
"Abby!" her aunt says in panic when she burst into the hospital room where Tia sat with her sister.
Viv raced over to her niece, only exhaling in relief when she sees her.
Abby was being looked over by one of the Emergency Room doctors as the woman shone a pen light into her eyes to see if she had a concussion.
"Aunt Viv, I'm fine" she tries to reassure her aunt, who was breathing heavily. "You need to sit down, aunt Viv, you sound like you're having a panic attack" she says in concern.
Tia offers her some water to drink but she declined it.
"I-I almost lost you too" Viv says to her niece when she sank into the seat that Tia had been occupying just seconds prior, hands shaking heavily.
"You didn't" Abby reassures her aunt, "I'm here" she says, extending a hand to her aunt, which Viv takes into her own as Tia stood behind her aunt. "I'm here" Abby reassures both of them, shooting them both a small smile of reassurance but it does nothing to quell each of their fears.
"Abby, I'm so sorry" Tyler finally speaks up on the bed beside her own where a nurse was patching him up.
"It's okay Tyler–"
"No, it is far from okay!" Viv remarks angrily when she rose from her seat to fix Tyler with a stern expression, "she could have been killed" she says as if to show Tyler how serious his actions are.
He averted his head in shame at her words.
"But I wasn't" Abby tries to reason with her. "It wasn't Tyler's fault" she adds in his defense, knowing that when angry her aunt could strike the fear of God into just about anyone.
It takes a while to get Viv to that place but when she's there.
She's THERE.
"Abby, we almost lost you."
"I'm here" Abby says to them.
"You, young man, can kiss your license goodbye" Viv sternly informed Tyler. "How is she, Jackie?" she asks the doctor attending to Abby.
"No signs of a concussion from what I see on her X-rays" Jackie replies, "and no broken ribs too" she revealed, "you're lucky to have come out of this alive, Abby" she says, "You must have a guardian angel watching over you" she adds.
Just an incredibly strong teen boy with titanium hands and golden brown eyes Abby quips internally.
"I heard that nurse Ericsson's niece was here" a new voice comments as Abby turned to face the source of the voice only for her eyes to widen a bit at the sight of the man in the doctor's coat.
What the hell?!
