Chapter 3 - Bad Second Day
"Aunt Viv, I made some lasagna last night" Abby says to her aunt when Viv stepped into the kitchen and found her nieces eating some cereal, "it just needs to be heated up before we have it for dinner tonight."
"When did you even–?"
"Last night" Abby shrugs.
When she wanted to get her mind going she usually did things like write, read or cook.
Cooking for her was a great way to distract herself from whatever thoughts were running rampant in her mind.
Tia, on the on the other hand, was the better baker of the two sisters and like her sister she would bake in order to calm her mind.
For Abby and Tia cooking and baking were great methods of stress relief and something that their mother had passed down to them.
Tanya would always cook or bake whenever she was stressed about work and trying to find a way to address a new case.
"Thanks kiddo. I owe you one" Viv says to her niece before pouring herself some coffee.
She's well-aware that Abby's cooking the lasagna when everyone else was asleep was her way of saying something was stressing her out but she would never say it outright.
Abby was much too selfless in that regard. She hated bothering other people with what she felt were insignificant problems in her life though she was always more than willing to help others with their own problems.
"Anytime" Abby replied, eating her cereal and reading a book as she did.
Viv watches her niece carefully, noting that Abby gave nothing away to convey her stress although she's sure that her niece must be stressed about something.
Tanya would always say that Abby's selfless nature was much too much like that of hers and Viv's mother, Gloria, and Viv was more than inclined to agree.

"Abby!" Viv calls for her niece when she dropped them off at school as Tia said her goodbyes before making her way toward her friends.
"Yeah, aunt Viv?" Abby turned to face her.
"You okay?" Viv asks as opposed to assuming that she is by saying 'you're okay, right?'
"Yeah, why do you ask?" Abby lies easily.
"Just worried about you, kiddo" Viv replies, "you've always been the quieter one of you and your sister" she says, "now more so than ever" she adds.
"I'm fine" Abby reassures her.
"Yo, Abby!" Mei called for her when she approached her friend.
Abby turned to wave at her.
"Oh, hi Ms. Ericsson!" she greets her new friend's aunt with a wave.
"Hey, Mei, right?"
"Yes ma'am" Mei says with a nod.
"Nice to see you again" Viv says, "you two have fun at school!" she says as Abby said another bye to her aunt before she drove off while Abby made her way toward her new friend.
"Just a little heads up, Eric Yorkie is going to bug the hell out of you today" Mei warns her, "he was busy with your sister yesterday but today is your day! Lucky you!" she commented with faux excitement, doing the jazz hands.
"He's the one from all the committees, right?" Abby asks, recalling how Mei said that she liked messing with him sometimes, especially by beating him at being the first one to welcome new students.
"Righto" Mei confirmed, "if you're with me and we see him then I might be able to help you escape him" she says.
Abby nods to this with a snort even though she can't help thinking about her aunt's words.
Was she being too obvious?
The last thing she wants to do is make her aunt stressed and worried about her.
"Thanks for that" Abby says to her, her tone teasing.
⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️
Abby didn't manage to escape Eric because he found her.
"He's like a dog with a bone. Relentless" Mei had teased when he caught up with them at the cafeteria.
Eric was a nice enough guy, with dark black hair and brown eyes. He was of Asian descent and was tall but his complexion was a little poor.
Aside from that though, Abby found him to be nice enough, if not a little too preppy for her liking.
"Eric, I see you met Abby!" Mike says to them, joining the trio at the table that they sat at, "hey Mei" he greets her since he'd already seen and greeted Abby.
"Mike" she inclines her head toward him, eating her chicken and mayo sandwich.
"You two know each other?" Eric wondered.
If Abby didn't know any better she'd assume there was jealousy in his voice.
"We have some classes together" Mike admits.
"Oh" Eric says.
"Oh so we're sitting here today? Okay then" Jessica Stanley commented when she made her way toward the table with Lauren Mallory and Angela Weber.
Lauren was the captain of the cheerleading team and Jessica was her co-captain.
Mei was the one who filled her in on their classmates and even people that Abby doesn't know.
Lauren has silver blonde hair with fishy eyes. She was pretty, as is typical of all cheerleader types but she looked at Abby like she's beneath her or something.
Jessica on the other hand had auburn hair that was mostly red than brown and brown eyes and she liked wearing an alice band in her hair.
Unlike Lauren she didn't look at Abby in hatred but she wasn't looking at her like they were best friends either.
Angela had dark brown hair and dark brown eyes and wore cute purple glasses, which framed her face perfectly.
She wore a kind smile on her face when she looked at Abby.
"Well seeing as you've just all invited yourselves why not just make yourselves at home" Mei retorted with a sarcastic smile, making Lauren scoff at her in response.
Abby doesn't know her well but she's already finding that she doesn't like the blonde girl.
"Have you guys met Abby?" Mike asks, clearing his throat awkwardly at what Mei said.
Mei's bluntness was something that people were used to. Abby was envious of her ability to speak her mind regardless of what anyone else says and she's only been at Forks High for 2 days.
"No, we haven't" Jessica says, "hi, I'm Jessica Stanley" she greets, extending a hand to Abby, "you're Abigail Jones, right?"
"Abby" Mei corrects her on Abby's behalf, making Abby give her friend a mental fist bump at this.
"Oh, sorry" Jessica says sheepishly, "these are Lauren and Angela" she said, gesturing to her friends, whom she'd hijacked Abby and Mei's table with.
"It's nice to meet you guys" Abby says politely.
"Can I take your picture?" Angela asked when she moved to retrieve her camera from her backpack, "for the picture in the editorial" she explained.
"No, please don't" Abby says, inhaling deeply at this. "Please don't run any stories on us. The last thing I want is more people staring" she remarks.
"Maybe do something on the sports teams instead?" Mei suggests, "the possibilities of students taking steroids perhaps?" she said, shooting Mike with a pointed look.
"Hey!" he says in offense, "it's not all of us who do that crap."
"If you say so Newton" Mei remarked with a smug grin, internally happy at pushing his buttons.
She just likes messing with all of these people.
They were by no means her friends but she had hung out with them on occasion, although she liked Angela the best out of all of them.
Tyler also hung out with them from time to time but he mostly hung out with his other friends.
"I guess it's back to the drawing board for me" Angela said with a sad sigh.
"I can help you with figuring out another story if you'd like?" Abby suggests, just wanting her to scrap the story of her and Tia.
Though knowing Tia, she wouldn't mind being in the school paper.
"That would be awesome. Thank you" Angela says with a grateful smile, pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose.
The others subjected Abby to questions that she'd hoped she wouldn't have to answer anymore but answered them nonetheless and she did note that they were careful not to bring up her mother, which she was grateful for because she didn't know any of them well enough to broach the topic of her mother with them.
"Hey Abby, why was Cullen glaring at you in Biology yesterday?" Mike asks curiously.
"Beats me" Abby replies with a shrug.
"If he's being a prick then I can gladly tell him for you" Mei says to her.
"Typically" Lauren commented snidely, biting into one of her baby carrots.
"Did you say something Lauren?" Mei asks her, daring her to repeat what she said.
"No. Nothing" Lauren replies in a faux, innocent tone.
A tense air settles around the table at this and Abby cleared her throat uncomfortably.
"That's what I thought" Mei says before going back to talking with Angela and Abby as they brainstormed ideas for Angela's editorial piece.
When the bell rang Abby was happy to be rid of Lauren and partially Jessica, mostly because she followed Lauren around like a brainless puppy, obviously afraid of being "socially outcast" if she went against Lauren or something ridiculous like that.
⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️
Abby sat in the school gym, waiting for the cheerleading tryouts to finish.
Tia was looking to join and like the supportive sister that she is, Abby was there to offer some encouragement.
The other girls looked impressed with Tia's cheerleading skills but not Lauren, who was cold to Tia even though she got in.
"Hey, Tia! Abby!" someone called out for them when tryouts ended.
They turned to face the source only for Tyler Crowley to make his way toward them, dressed in his football attire.
He was captain of the football team, Mike was captain of the lacrosse team and Eric was captain of the chess club so all in all they know a lot of school captains.
"Oh hi Tyler" Abby greets while Tia shifted awkwardly from foot to foot at being so close to the guy she had a crush on.
"Were you trying out for the cheerleading squad, Tia?" he asks her.
"Y-Yeah" she says with a nervous nod.
"Cool" he says, "hey so, Abby, I was wondering if maybe you'd like to hang with us at Derek O'Connor's party this Friday" he says, "you can totally come too if you'd like, Tia" he adds, even though his eyes were trained solely on Abby.
"Unfortunately I can't because I have this...thing" Abby lies, "Our aunt is taking us shopping this Friday, right?" she says to her sister who looked between Tyler and her sister at this before nodding. "But uh...thanks for the invite."
"Uh okay then" he says, sounding a little disappointed at this as their aunt pulled up at the school. "I'll see you two around then."
Abby and Tia nod at this before he made his way over to his friends while they made their way over to their aunt's car.
"I finally like someone and it turns out he likes my sister instead!" Tia grumbles bitterly.
"He doesn't–"
"Oh please, Abby, he wouldn't have invited you if he didn't like you" Tia says with a cross of her arms, "he didn't even spare me a glance" she added when they climbed into the car.
"Hey! How were the tryouts?!" Viv asks excitedly.
"The tryouts? Great. Life? Disappointing" Tia commented bitterly while putting on her seatbelt and staring out the window with a pout.
Viv look to Abby for clarification.
"Tia thinks that her crush likes me" Abby explains.
"Which he totally does" Tia says, "he didn't even look at me when talking to her."
"How is where Tyler Crowley chooses to look my fault?" Abby asks her sister when she turns to face her. "And besides, I don't like him. Lauren's the one who likes him, remember?" she said, referring to what Tia told her yesterday.
Viv started the car and drove back to their house so that they could freshen up before Charlie arrived and joined them for dinner.
⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️
"I'm pretty sure that the police chief thinks that we hate him" Abby said to her sister when she walked into Tia's room as Tia shoots her an annoyed look for not knocking.
"Why?"
"Well, you were grumpy at dinner and didn't try to make conversation" Abby says, "not to mention I was trying to be nice but he's awkward and well...you know me" she says, "withdrawn" she points to herself, making Tia snort at this.
"I'm sure aunt Viv told him that we were just having a bad second day" Tia replied as she continued sketching her dress designs.
"I need your help" Abby admits, "with guy stuff" she said, making Tia snap her sketchpad shut at this.
"I knew this day would come" she remarks excitey as the tension between them all but melted after this.
"First of all, shut up" Abby says with a light laugh, "secondly, I'm not asking for your help because I like someone but because someone doesn't like me."
"Who?"
"Edward Cullen" Abby admits.
Tia looks at her in surprise at this.
"It's only the second day, what could you have possible done to make him dislike you?"
"Why would you assume that I'm the problem?" Abby says, "he's the one who was rude."
"Lay it on me" she stated so Abby told her all about how Edward acted yesterday and how he'd been absent today.
"I mean...I'm not wrong in saying that he's an asshat, right?" Abby asks her younger sister after she had explained everything to Tia.
"Damn" Tia says, "and I thought that he was a nice one" she says, "well not actually nice more so than hot but you know what I mean" she added dismissively, which Abby chuckes at.
"What do you suggest I do?"
"Confront him about it" Tia replied, "I mean don't go all Jerry Springer crazy on the poor guy but just politely call him aside and ask him if you've done anything to offend him and if so apologize" she advised.
"And if he says no and is just a racist asshole?"
"Then I step in" Tia says smugly, "and believe me, you don't want me to step in."
"What are you going to do? Spread rumours about him?" Abby asks with a snort but Tia doesn't laugh at this. "Tia, no!" she says sternly.
"It's called being catty" Tia says in her defense.
"I don't care what you call it" Abby says, "you are not to spread any rumours about him just because he dislikes your sister" she adds.
"I won't make any promises" Tia says, holding her hands up in surrender, "but he better not be a racist asshole to you is all I'm saying" she warns.
"I'm the older one–"
"Oh let go of that excuse already" Tia comments with a roll of the eyes, "you're my older sister and I love you" she states, "and if protecting you means telling people that Edward Cullen is actually a douchebag then by all means I will do it" she adds, laying her cards on the table.
"Why did I tell you this again?" Abby asks, face-palming herself.
"Because I'm awesome and you love me" Tia says.
"No, it's definitely not that" Abby teases as Tia flips her off.
Abby laughs at this, pulling her sister in for a smothering hug.
Tia laughed at this as the two sisters tickled one another.
"I'm sorry about what Tyler did" Abby says to her sister, "I can give him hints to ask you out if you'd like?"
"Nah" Tia says, "I'm over him" she adds. "My crush on him was fickle anyway" she adds dismissively as Abby rolls her eyes at her sister's words.
"That was fast" Abby teases, "so whose your latest crush?"
"Don't know yet but I'll see" she replied as the two sisters shared a laugh at this, laying on Tia's bed and staring up at the ceiling.
"You could always crush on Mike if you like" Abby teases her sister.
"Jessica Stanley has a huge crush on him in case you hadn't noticed" Tia pointed out.
"When the hell do you get the time to observe all of this?"
"I heard some things here and there and besides, Jessica is as obvious about her crush on Mike as Lauren is on her crush on Tyler and Tyler, Eric and Mike are about their crushes on you" she adds as Abby sits up to face her sister at this.
"They do not–"
"Wanna bet $20 that they'll ask you to the homecoming dance?" Tia asks her older sister.
Abby falls back onto her sister's bed with a groan at this.
She misses the days when she was the invisible girl.
"Face it sis, you're the newest pretty face at Forks High and every guy wants to ask you out."
"And what about you? You're always surrounded by guys" Abby points out.
"Unfortunately for me the one that I wanted didn't want me" Tia says with a casual shrug.
"Tia–"
"I swear to God, Abby, if you apologize I will punch you in the face" Tia says, crossing her arms over her chest at this as Abby laughs lightly at her sister's words. "I'm a big girl, I can handle rejection" she says, "not well" she said, referring to how she'd acted in the car and throughout the entirety of dinner tonight, "but I can handle it" she adds.
"Regardless of who has a crush on whom" Abby starts, "I'm not really looking to be in a relationship right now" she says, "I need to figure some things out first."
"She wouldn't want you to be like this, you know" Tia says to her sister, her voice breaking a little.
Abby turns to face her.
"She loved...life" Tia solemnly reminds her sister, "and she wouldn't want you to waste yours" she concludes as the two sisters' eyes fill with tears at the memory of their mother's zest for life.
"I know" Abby replies in a whisper so faint she can't help wondering if Tia even heard her. "It's just...so fucking hard" she commented, wiping her tears away when they slid down her face.
