Chapter 2 - Rude Interactions

"Mei, what a pleasant surprise" the biology teacher, Mr. Molina remarked when he sees her and Abby make their way into the class.

"Hi Mr. Molina, I brought you a new student" Mei explains, "she's new here, Abby Jones" she adds.

"Welcome Abigail–"

"She prefers Abby" Mei interjects for her.

"Oh, I'm sorry. Welcome Abby" Mr. Molina kindly corrected himself, "let me just get your stuff" he said, opening the bottom drawer of his desk.

"Girl, this is where I leave you" Mei whispers to her newfound friend, "I'm not in Biology II, thank God!" she exclaimed in relief, clasping her hands together as if saying a thankful prayer and Abby laughs internally at this, considering how closely they stood next to Mr. Molina's desk.

"Bye Mr. Molina! See you later Abby!" Mei says before leaving to attend her next class.

"I'll just take that" he says, taking her pass, "Here you go Abby" Mr. Molina says, handing her the textbook. "Do you think that you can catch up with the rest of the class?" he asks, referring to how she's started in the middle of the semester.

"Yes. I believe that I can" Abby says with a nod.

"Okay" Mr. Molina says with a nod, "if you feel like you're stuck somewhere then just tell me, okay?"

"Yes sir."

"Great, you can grab a seat next to Mr. Cullen over there" he says as Abby's eyes finally landed on the Cullen male who looked like he was really uncomfortable when she sat next to him.

He flinches before covering his nose as if Abby smells foul to him.

She tries not to let this get to her, wondering why he's acting so cruel to her and she can't wondering if maybe he was racist.

She turns to face him a little and the way he looks at her makes her want the ground to open up and swallow her whole right then and there.

She's never seen anyone look at her with such hatred before. She could even sear that his eyes looked black.

She sighs heavily at this before quickly looking away.

The last thing she wants to deal with right now is some racist prick taking issue to the fact that she's sitting beside him and seeing as she's new she doesn't want to have to go to Mr. Molina and ask him to reassign her to someplace else.

She doesn't like bothering people for things.

Yes, Edward Cullen was even more beautiful up close but that beauty was all but washed away by his cold reaction to her.

She's not expecting them to be best friends but the least he could do is not be such an asshole.

She uses her hair to shield her face from him, facing Mr. Molina when it seemed like he was about to start the lecture.

"Okay everyone" Mr. Molina says as they all grab their seats, "we have ourselves a brand new student, Abby Jones" he says, gesturing to her, making her stiffen a little at this.

She hates having to make introductions and seeing as she's had classes with some of these people she doesn't like that she has to tell them about herself yet again.

"Welcome to you and please tell us a bit about yourself" he says.

Abby's heart starts racing in her chest at this.

Edward tensed in his seat but she was too nervous dealing with her anxiety to notice.

"Uh...my name is Abby" she started, clearing her throat when she spoke, "I moved here from Phoenix, Arizona with my younger sister" she quickly concluded.

"Awesome!" Mr. Molina says as if she's made some great contribution to humanity, "welcome" he repeats, "and please everyone let's show Abby a warm, Forks welcome, okay?" he added before starting with the class.

Abby relaxed at this, making her heart start to calm a bit.

She steals a glance at Edward beside her and he appeared to be leaning as far away from her as possible while Mr. Molina explained planaria to them.

She leans away from him too, not wanting to make it worse for him even though he's the one acting like an asshole as lessons progressed.

When the bell rang Edward all but raced out the class and Abby frowned a bit at this, sniffing herself a little, in a sly manner, once again wondering if maybe she smelled bad or something.

All she could smell was the Chanel No 5 perfume that her aunt bought for her and told her that she has to wear even though she knows that Abby isn't a fan of these brands names like Tia was.

"Strange" she comments, curious about Edward's behaviour when she packed up her stuff and made her way toward the door only to be stopped by a blond haired, blue eyed guy with a friendly smile.

His hair is carefully spiked and he had a cute baby face.

"Hey, Abby, right?"

Why ask the obvious considering she had told them her name in class she wonders internally, already annoyed by Edward Cullen.

"Yeah, last I checked" she replied.

He chuckles at this as if she's made a joke.

She doesn't mean to be mean to this poor guy but she's a little annoyed and put off by Edward Cullen's rude behavior.

"I'm Mike" he introduced himself, "Mike Newton."

"Hi Mike Newton" Abby replied as politely as she can muster.

"Are you uh...headed to...headed to gym next?" he asks, clearing his throat a little uncomfortably when she looked up at him from under her long, black eyelashes.

"Yeah."

"Awesome!" he says, "I'm also headed there so we can walk together and I can show you a nice, warm Forks welcome" he teased with a bright grin, making reference to what Mr. Molina said.

Abby offered him a polite smile in response, not wanting to be rude since she's kind of already been a bit mean to the poor guy.

"Okay sure" she replied before they started heading to gym together.

"So I uh...I met your sister today" he shared, "Tia, right?" he says, trying to make awkward conversation.

"Yip" Abby says with a nod.

"She's a cool chick" Mike says.

"I'm glad that you like her."

"So uh...how did you find your first day?" he asked her, searching his mind for something to say.

"To be honest it was a little tiring" Abby admits, "but all in all, school is always just school, right?"

"Y-Yeah" Mike says immediately, before realizing that he was coming off way too strong, "I mean yeah" he added as if that will seem cooler to her.

"Do you...play any sports, Mike?" Abby asks him, unsure of what else to say since they weren't yet outside the gym.

"I'm actually the captain of the lacrosse team" he reveals.

"Oh, that's cool" Abby says, "I've always wanted to play lacrosse" she lies politely.

"Oh cool, maybe one day I can totally teach you!" Mike suggests to her, sounding a little excited at this, probably happy they had a 'shared' interest.

"That sounds...great" Abby says with a polite smile, "so...uh thanks for walking me to the gym" she says when she sees some of her female classmates headed toward the bathrooms to get changed.

"R-Right" he says with a nod, "see you inside."

She nodded at this before making her way to the bathrooms to go and get changed along with everyone else.

To say that today has been a weird first day after what Edward Cullen did would be something of an understatement.

⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️

"So?" Tia probed her sister for news when they waited for their aunt as she made her way toward Abby, "how was your first day?"

"Far less exciting than yours that's for certain" Abby teases, "tell me about yours first" she says as Tia launches into a long-winded story about how she met this person and that person and they ended up introducing her to another person.

Suffice to say that the more social of the Jones sisters had an amazing first day at Forks High even though she had been complaining about how she had to leave the friends that she'd made in Phoenx.

Speaking of which, Abby is going to have to call her best friend Sandra and ask her how her first day of school went.

"And there's this really cute guy called Tyler Crowley who's in your grade but Lauren likes him so he's a big no-no" she adds.

"We've only been here one day and you already know who likes who?" Abby comments in disbelief, "you're unbelievable" she says with an amused roll of her eyes.

"It's all about knowing the right people, sis" Tia says with faux smugness when their aunt pulled up in front of them.

"And you do?"

"I know a lot more people than you do" Tia says pointedly.

"Touché" Abby admits, making a face of agreement at this before they made their way to their aunt, who asks them about their first days and Tia is more than happy to share what her first day went like while Abby stared out the window, taking in the passing scenery of Forks as it started to rain.

"And you, sweetheart?" Viv asks her oldest niece, "how did your first day go?"

"Okay" she says with a shrug, "I made a new friend called Mei so that's something" she adds.

"You'd love Mei, aunt Viv, she's funny and actually likes Abby's sarcasm" Tia contributed from her spot in the backseat.

"You probably know her mom too" Abby says, "Mei said that she's a doctor at the hospital" she shares, "last name Wang?"

"Oh Doctor Wang!" Viv adds in realization, "she's a wonderful woman" she adds, "and a great doctor" she reveals, "she came here with her daughter after getting a divorce. They moved here from Seattle" she fills them in, "Wow, her daughter's in your grade now? Time sure does fly" she adds.

"Only when you're having fun, aunt Viv" Tia quips.

Viv snorted at her niece's cheeky response.

"Cool it there, Chatterbox" she teased her, calling her by her childhood nickname.

Hearing it brings them all a sense of normalcy.

As if things are still the same even though they really aren't and never would be again.

"Aunt Viv do you know the Cullens?" Tia asks her, slipping into an instant gossip mode.

Abby tenses a little at hearing the surname of the boy who was a total jerk to her today.

"I know doctor Cullen" Viv says. "He's a great doctor, absolutely amazing" she adds in a gushing tone, "he could easily be working for one of the country's best hospitals or something and yet he's here in Forks with us and we're grateful for it."

"Do you know why they like Forks specifically?" Abby finds herself asking.

"Hey, we have a great many things to offer!" Viv says in faux offense.

"Right" Tia drawled out sarcastically from her seat in the back. "I know, I know. Cool it, Chatterbox" she said when her aunt opens her mouth to speak.

The trio all laugh at this since that was exactly what Viv had been about to say.

"To answer your question, Abby, doctor Cullen has said that it's his wife who liked the idea of living in Forks" she tells them, "small town and all."

"Is he really as good looking as people claim?" Tia asks nosily, making Abby snort at this.

Of course Tia would wonder about THAT piece of information.

"Much more so" Viv retorts, which Tia giggles at, "but he's also married so...you know" she adds with a shrug before they pulled into their driveway only to find a police cruiser parked outside their house.

They all climbed out the car as the policeman also climbed out of his own car and made his way toward them – dressed in his police uniform.

"Oh, Charlie, hi!" Viv greeted the man.

Abby and Tia share a look when they hear the eagerness in their aunt's voice at the sight of the policeman.

"Hey there Viv" the man greets a little awkwardly.

He has the mustache that Abby has seen in TV actors from the 80's.

He appeared to be in his 40s with dark hair and an awkward air about him.

"Girls, this is Chief Swan, I don't think either of you remember him" Viv says to her nieces when they came to stand next to her as she introduced them to the police chief.

"It's nice to see you again, sir" Abby says politely even though she doesn't remember him at all.

"You too" Charlie replied, "You've both grown a lot since I last saw ya" he adds a little awkwardly.

He's clearly just an awkward man in general.

"Aunt Viv, we're going to head inside and get started on dinner, okay?" Abby says as Viv nods at this.

"Okay sweetie, I'll be in there in a few" she replied as the two said said their goodbyes to the two adults before heading into their house.

"Oh my God, could those be two anymore awkward around each other!" Tia says with a giggle when she placed her bag on the couch, "they're so awkward with each other it's adorable!" she gushed, making Abby laugh at this.

"You really think they like each other?"

"Duh!" Tia says.

Abby placed her own bag on the sofa before they headed to the kitchen to grab sodas from the fridge to drink.

"They couldn't be more obvious if they tried" she said, handing her sister a soda before also grabbing one for herself.

⚜️Crashing Into You⚜️

"They uh – They sure have grown since I last saw 'em" Charlie remarks awkwardly, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly from his spot across from Viv.

"Sure have" Viv agreed, "so what did Billy say?" she asks him.

"Oh right" he says as if recalling why he came to see her in the first place. "His son is done with the engine so they'll bring the truck down tomorrow" he shares.

"I really can't thank you enough for your help, Charlie" Viv says to him.

"I'm happy to help" he replied.

They both stood quietly, wondering what else to say to one another next.

"Well uh – I should get going then" he says.

"Sure" Viv replied with a nod, mentally chiding herself for not saying anything else.

"Bye then" Charlie says awkwardly before he turned to walk off as Viv watched him leave, fighting the urge to say something and stop him.

"Uh...Charlie!" she finally called out for him, causing him toe turn and face her, "would you...would you like to join me and my nieces for dinner tomorrow?" she asked him, "as a thank you for helping us get the truck" she quickly explained.

"It's fine Viv–"

"Please. I insist" Viv says.

"Uh...okay, sure" he said with a nod.

"Great, we'll see you tomorrow at 6pm then!" she said with a beaming smile.

He returned her smile with a small, shy one of his own before heading to his cruiser, climbing inside and  raising his hand to wave bye as Viv did the same when he drove off.

She headed into the house and finds her nieces in the kitchen where Tia was making them some green salad while Abby boiled some pasta and chopped some garlic and others herbs to add to her mince.

"You two seem to have a good hang of things" Viv comments, watching them.

"Yip" Tia says with a nod.

"I uh – I got a truck for you two" she informs, making them both turn to face her at this, "to help you with traveling in case I'm busy or at work. It'll be here tomorrow afternoon" she said.

"That's great, aunt Viv, thank you!" Abby says gratefully.

"I imagine that's why you were talking with the chief?" Tia asks as their aunt nods at this. "So...not to invite him to dinner with us?" she asks with a cheeky grin.

"You little eavesdropper" Her aunt accuses playfully, making Tia laugh in response.

"Sorry" she says, even though she sounds anything but sorry.

"Aunt Viv, why don't you go take a shower while we make dinner tonight?" Abby asks her.

"You don't want me to–"

"No!" Tia interjects quickly in panic, "I mean...you must be tired after your long day at work" she amended quickly as a cover-up.

Viv crosses her arms over her chest at this, giving her nieces a mock frown in response.

"Oh really now?" she asks her youngest niece.

It's common knowledge amongst the Ericsson family that Vivian is an...interesting cook to say the least.

It was usually their grandmother and Tanya that cooked family meals because Vivian was a really bad cook.

Once, she burned a pot so bad that it could not be salvaged and they had to throw it away.

"I'm not that bad a cook, you know" Viv amjsedly pointed out to her nieces.

"No, of course not, aunt Viv" Abby replied sweetly.

"I'm going to go shower" Viv says, "because I want to and not because I'm actually running away from helping you two cook" she added playfully, making her nieces laugh at this.

She's more than aware of her terrible cooking skills. Goodness knows that her sister would always tease her about it.

Seeing her nieces work together to make dinner reminds her of how she would help her sister out in their youth.

Though for her 'cooking' actually meant handing her sister whatever ingredients she needed in order to cook.

She doesn't know why she'd invited Charlie to dinner since she's such a bad cook but she does know that she'd need the girls' help with dinner tomorrow if she didn't want to give the poor man food poisoning.

She'd panicked when she watched him leaving – feeling a sudden urge to ask him out to dinner...in order to thank him for helping her find a car for her nieces.

Yes, that's definitely why she had invited him to dinner with them and certainly not because she had feelings for him.
