It had been two months since the case with his family and Spencer kept his promise of staying in touch as much as possible even though he was still distracting himself with work since he still hadn't been able to see his other family yet. It had been almost five months now and Reid was going crazy but luckily they both stacked up some vacation days in those months and lined it up so that they both had two weeks off at the same time.

Spencer got up earlier than usual today because it was a sunday and he needed to have his weekly call with Maeve not only to update her on everything but he also needed to tell her that he might not be able to call her next week since he won't be here. He jogs up to the new phonebooth he found in the park near his house and calls the number he memorized so many years ago.

He lets the phone ring a few times before hanging up and waiting for Maeve to call back, that's what they normally did to make sure that it was Spencer calling and not the stalker. Almost immediately he gets a call back and answers it smiling, his smile immediately drops though when the automated voice says he has a collect call from 'Adam Worth' the real life inspiration for the sherlock villain Moriarty, him and Maeve used to always use the names of the real life Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in their emails and letters because that's what Emma used to always call them. She said it was because they got along really well and were both considerably geniuses, Spencer being Sherlock of course because he was smarter.

He accepts the charges as soon as he's asked and frantically deposits two dollars after rifling through his bag when the automated voice asks for the money, when he hears the beep coming from the phone and the call connecting he worriedly starts talking "hello, i'm still here" his heart and stomach both drop as he hears a disguised voice respond "zugzwang" he recognized the chess term right away but was hoping to get more information out of the other person "i'm sorry can you please repeat that?" the voice responded again with the same word "zugzwang"

The second that the call ends he starts running to his car, getting there in record time and driving to the Bau with little to no care for road safety and rules at the moment. When he got there he told Hotch the cover story and everything that just happened which he luckily believed, as did the rest of the team. They of course immediately started working the case and finding out everything they could, Spencer was going to do everything in his power to find her but first he had to make a call.

He went to the bathroom to have some privacy and silence, this was not going to be an easy conversation to have at all. He turned on his phone and clicked the first speed dial button, putting it to his ear when he heard it ring and sighing in relief when he heard his wifes voice. No matter what was going on her voice always soothed him, he took a deep breath and started explaining the situation. Emma told him she believes in him and knows he'll do everything in his power but that she couldn't come right now because she was in the middle of a case.

He promised to keep her updated as much as he could without raising suspicion from his friends, they exchanged goodbyes and 'i love you's' before he hung up and went back to the round table room. After Garcia found Maeve online and tracked down her address the team split up, Morgan and JJ go to her loft, Hotch and Spencer go find her parents and Rossi and Prentiss go to her workplace.

Luckily when Hotch and Spencer were talking to her and Emma's parents they already knew everything they were supposed to do and say if this were to ever happen, their plan was very well thought out. Their parents were meant to pretend like they didn't know Spencer and they had to tell them bad thing about her husband Robert even though he was actually a very good guy and they really liked him. They had to do this since the team would find out about him sooner or later and they had to rule him out as a suspect early on.

During their interview Maeve and Emma's mom mentions something about her being sick, she has cancer and doesn't know if she can beat it. Spencer slightly tenses at the mention and he tries not to show the fact that he's upset about it, in reality he's terrified of losing her because Emma's parents were both very close with Spencer and he loved them dearly. If Hotch asks why he was upset he can just tell him that he couldn't believe she didn't tell him she was married or something like that.

Hotch leaves the room for a few minutes and Spencer takes that time to talk to his in-laws, making sure they know how good his team is and that all of them are working as hard as they can to find their daughter. They tell him not to worry because they already know he's going to do everything he possibly can do to save her, they hug him quickly and reassure him that they love him no matter what as hard as it is to even think about this going wrong they still need him to know they won't blame him. He smiles at them and tells them they don't have to think about that right now because he will get her back, no matter what it takes.

They really did love both of their daughters husbands, they were happy to know that they both found nice and genuinely understanding men to fall in love with. Speaking of Robert, Spencer had also already called to update him on the situation and to make sure he knows the girls' parents were going to say some pretty nasty lies about him to make sure the team finds him and clears him as a suspect in the case. He also told him that they would most likely be there soon to ask him questions and talk to him, he made sure to remind him not to let it seem like he knew him at all even though they were actually very good friends and had gotten a lot closer since most of the time Spencer was helping them comunicate during his weekly calls because Robert could only safely call about twice a month and it killed the two, who even after all this time apart still loved eachother very much.

Just as Spencer suspected they found Robert pretty quickly after that and went to his apartement to interrogate him and see if he's at all suspicious of these crimes. When they get there he's not alone though, he's with his best friend Diane who is very confused about this whole situation. Hotch makes Spencer go outside for a breather because him and Robert kept looking at eachother weird and Hotch mistaked it for jealousy rather than recognition and support between friends.

While he was outside pacing and thinking over everything Diane came out to check on him and asked him some questions, referring to him as Doctor Reid which he found a little weird but didn't dwell on it much because he was thinking about the case. Looking back though, he probably should have paid more attention and asked how she knew he was a doctor. They went back to the office with some pictures that Robert had received from the stalker who was apparently following him too on some level.

Spencer was very closed off during the case and didn't talk much unless it was necessary or he was on the phone with Emma he also didn't want to talk very much about Maeve to the team because he was honestly a little too emotional at the moment to keep his story consistent. Upon further examination of the pictures from the stalker they realized that what they usd to black out Maeve's face in the picture was not marker or pen but rather eyeliner which could only mean one thing. The unsub was actually a woman.

When they told Spencer that it all clicked in his brain and he remembered what Diane called him, that's all it took for them to realize who the stalker was. After a lot of digging from Garcia and a small explosion on Spencer's part towards Rossi they finally figured out that Diane was actually a grad student that Maeve rejected and she wanted to prove that she was better than her and that she could get anything that Maeve could. After finding out who she was it didn't take long for them to find her loft and they immediately rushed over there to arrest her, only to find it empty.

Spencer saw a camera in the corner of the room and wrote something on a piece of paper, showing it to her. He wanted to trade places with Maeve 'me for her' is what he had written down which got him a clue of where they were in return. He didn't care about how stupid this plan most likely was, he was going to trade himself for her because she meant everything to Emma. He couldn't be the reason that Emma loses her sister and best friend, he promised that he would do whatever he had to, to get her back and that's exactly what he's planning to do.

He calls Emma one last time before they leave to the addresse to tell her his plan, she tries to object and tell him how crazy he's being but he doesn't let her. He tells her that in case something happens he loves her and always will. After that they left and Spencer started thinking a little more on the situation, he figured that Diane most likely thought that him and Maeve were actually together and that she was cheating on Robert. They also figured that she became his best friend to try to seduce him into cheating but he never did because he still loved Maeve way too much to do that to her even if he couldn't see her right now.

That's probably another thing that really pissed her off since she most likely had at least some amount of feelings for him, or thought she did anyway and his constant rejection couldn't have helped matters. He goes into the building alone, unarmed and without a vest when they get there and gets blindfolded when Diane finds him. He's guessing this was something in one of Maeve's letters to Robert that got mixed up with him becuase he never mentioned anything about blindfolds to her. 

When they get upstairs he figures that the best course of action is to make Diane feel like she's more important than Maeve to him and that he's actually in love with her. It's all going rather smoothly until she tries to kiss him and he doesn't reciprocate as much as he should be because he can't even think about ever kissing someone other than Emma, his Dove. She pushes away right away and gets very angry as she rushes back over to Maeve, he tries to stop her but she shoots him in the shoulder and he can't do much.

The rest of the team hear the gunshot and rush in to find Diane with a gun pointed to Maeve's head and Spencer bleeding but still somehow standing up and talking. "Diane, Diane there's still a way out of this" she starts crying and responds "you never wanted me, never, you lied" "i didn't, Diane i offered you a deal and you can still take it me for her, let me take her place" he says desperately, he knows that if they switch the team has a small chance to shoot her and if not he still would rather Emma lose him than her sister. This just upsets her more though "you would do that, you would kill yourself for her?" she asks while sobbing and he instantly responds "yes"

Maeve realizes what he's doing and that he thinks Emma would rather have her sister than him so she says "Thomas Merton" and he nods back in response, you see Thomas Merton was Emmas favorite philospher and they both knew he was doing this for her "who's Thomas Merton" Diane asks in a high pitched, annoyed voice because she's being let out "he knows" Maeve responds and then repeats it quieter "who is he?" she asks again to which maeve just responds while smiling "he's the one thing you can never take from us" which really meant that at least Emma was still safe and out of harms way.

Diane scrunches her face in anger and spits out "no" before bringing the gun to her own head "WAIT!" Spencer shouts but it's too late, she already pulled the trigger killing them both in the process. The rest of the team slowly drop their weapons with tears in their eyes and look to Reid who stays frozen in place for a few moments before leaving the building without another word to call his wife once more even though for the first time in his life, he really doesn't want to talk to her.

A/N : Hey babes, so just for reference for the next few chapters i wanna clear things up:
So when they adopted Jasmine she was four years old and they had her for around eight years before her and Emma moved, meaning she was twelve when they left and is now fourteen. Which also means that they've been together around seventeen years and married for around eleven. Spencer is currently 33 years old and Emma is 32 by the way.

Alright so i'm trying to make everything make sense right now so i'm changing a few details, let's pretend that Zack wasn't born yet when they adopted Spencer and that he grew up his entire life with him as a brother, and let's pretend last chapter Spencer told him he was seventeen years older than him rather than eight to make the timeline make more sense. I know the timing with the show kind of also sucks but luckily it's only by a few years since Spencer turned 30 in season seven and this is currently in the middle of season 8.
