Crash
Wilmer
The car came out of nowhere. Mia and I were driving to bring her back to Demi's house when all of a sudden the car was rolling and Mia was screaming and it all went black. I woke up in a hospital bed, they concluded that I had a minor concussion while Mia's injuries were more serious. As I sat in the waiting room for her to get out of surgery, I knew I was in trouble once I heard the clicking heels.
"WHAT HAPPENED?!"
I turned to see Demi, red-faced and clearly worried sick, "Demi there was an accident-"
"What did you do?!" She screamed at me, and shoved my chest, "What happened?!"
I took a deep breath, "It was a drunk driver, he was swerving lanes and slammed into us. Mia's injuries were more serious than mine, but she's in surgery now."
Demi curled her lip up, "I knew you taking her for the whole weekend was a bad idea. We should've just stuck with the visitation that the court set."
I could feel anger rising in my chest, "Don't give me that bullshit, it was an accident!"
She rolled her eyes, "It doesn't matter Wilmer! She's only six!"
Underneath the anger she had for me, I could see the intense worry and fear inside of her eyes. Her biggest fear used to be losing Mia and I, but now it was just Mia since she had already let go of me. I knew she needed to calm down, or else things would get even worse. I gripped the top of her shoulders and guided her into a chair.
"You need to calm down, and sit down."
She shoved my hands off of her and stood up, "I will not sit down. I want to know what happened to her and what's wrong with Mia!"
I sat down and put my head in my hands, "She's been in surgery for a while, I don't know any more than you do."
Demi was pacing now, "If anything happens to her I swear to God I'll never forgive you."
I closed my eyes, "Don't worry Dems, If anything happens to her you will never be able to hate me more than I would hate myself."
She paused her pacing for a second, the resumed but didn't say another word. Eventually, she sat down in the chair next to me and pulled out her phone, "I need to call my mom and the others to get them down here."
I put my hand on top of hers, "Can we just not do that for a few more minutes. I don't want to see the look on their faces."
Her bottom lip was trembling, "Wilmer I can't do this alone. I'm going to fall apart."
I looked into her eyes and intertwined our fingers, "Who said anything about being alone? I'm right here Demi."
She shook her head, "You can't be my hero anymore."
I cocked my head, "I'm not trying to be your hero. I'm trying to be the father of your daughter, who's fighting hard. She's just like her mom, she's a warrior."
Demi closed her eyes at my words and shook her head, "But I'm not a warrior, I can't handle this. If anything happens to her I swear to God-"
"Yeah I know." I interrupted, "You'll never forgive me."
She shook her head, "No. I won't be able to function if something happens to her. She's all I have Will, she's my whole world."
I sighed, "You have me."
"Yeah, look how well that turned out." She snapped, then her eyes softened, "I'm sorry, that was mean."
I shook my head, "No, it's okay. I deserve that."
Demi pinched the bridge of her nose, "I don't want to talk about us. I can't get into that now, not here."
I reached over and held her hand, "It's okay."
We sat there for a while, me trying to comfort her the best I could while Demi cried and worried. Eventually a doctor called our 'Valderrama' and we both practically ran up to him.
"Hi, I'm doctor Anderson. I performed a surgery on your daughter's arm and ribs to set them in place. Although she does have a severe concussion, so we won't know the severity of her brain function until we get closer readings or she wakes up."
Demi sobbed and threw her arms around my neck, burying her face in my chest. I held her up, stroking her back gently. It had been so long since I last held her like this, tightly and securely. The most hugs we've done were fake and quick just for show in front of Mia. But this was different, it was how I used to hold her when she needed me. For a split second, it was like we were back in time two years, happily married and loving each other, not divorced with separate custody rights. After a few seconds, Demi seemed to realize what she was doing and pulled away, wiping at her eyes.
"Sorry." She muttered quietly.
I just nodded looked at the doctor, "Can we see her?"
He nodded, "Right this way."
We followed him through the hallways and doors until we were led to a private room. Mia lay in the middle of the huge hospital bed, laying flat as she slept, even though she usually curled up into a ball. Demi let out a low groan when she saw her, and sat in a chair, rubbing her face. I walked over to the bedside, reached out a tentative hand and stroked her hair gently. I could feel a lump forming in my throat and I bowed my head, trying to stop myself from crying. I had to be the strong one here. Eventually though, I couldn't keep it in any longer, and let out a quiet sob and tears began to fall from my eyes. I heard Demi's intake of breath, and she walked over to me but I turned my head, not wanting her to see me like this.
"Will." She said in a gentle tone. I felt her fingers on my jawline and she slowly turned my face to look at her. "Come here." She whispered, and wrapped her arms around me, pulling me into a hug.
I grabbed her in my arms and held on for dear life. I had done this, it was all my fault. I nearly killed our daughter.
I didn't realize I was speaking out loud until Demi pulled away and grabbed my face in her hands, "Listen to me right now. This is not your fault, okay? It was an accident. You cannot be blamed for this and I'm sorry I blamed you when I got here. I was scared and didn't know what was going on. You're the best dad in the world, and this is not your fault okay?" I pitifully nodded my head and she hugged my again, "She's gonna be fine. I need you to believe that she's gonna be fine because if you don't think she's gonna be fine I'm gonna fucking lose it because you're always the smart one, and the level headed one."
I nodded and rubbed her back as she began to cry again, "It's gonna be okay, she's gonna be fine."
Demi melted into me, burying her face into my chest and gripping me tightly. I held her securely and rubbed her back. I hesitated for a second, then took a deep breath, and kissed her forehead. I felt her tense, then relax as her fingers dug into my t-shirt.
"I can't do this anymore." She whispered, and looked up at me.
"Do what?" I murmured, scared of what she was going to say.
"The back and forth with Mia. She's needs a father, she needs you full-time." I could feel my heart beating faster and she bit her lip, "I need you full-time."
I furrowed my brow, "Demi, what are you saying?"
She slid one hand up to the base of my neck, "I'm saying, I want us to be a family again. I want us, you." I could see she was getting emotional, "Come home."
My eyes widened and I pulled her towards me, cupping both of her cheeks in my hands, "Really?"
Demi nodded, "Yes."
The words barely left her mouth before I was kissing her, nearly shedding a few more tears from the relief I felt. After two years, I was finally holding her and kissing her again. Demi broke the kiss first and leaned our foreheads together.
"I love you so much." The words tumbled out of my mouth so fast I was afraid she couldn't understand me.
"I love you too Will."
A sudden sound broke us apart and we looked towards the bed where Mia lay. Her eyes were open and she was staring at Demi and I with a confused expression.
"Mama?"
Demi rushed towards her bedside and grabbed her hands, "I'm here baby girl. Mommy's here." She cooed, as Mia started crying and hugged her gently. Mia looked over Demi's shoulder at me through tear-streaked eyes.
"Papa?"
I smiled and walked over, kissing her forehead, "I'm here Mia." She leaned into my side and I wrapped my arms around both her and Demi, "It's gonna be okay niña. It's all gonna be okay."
Over Mia's head Demi smiled at me, tears shining in her eyes, "We love you so much."
