Chapter 6: idk wut 2 call this... so WAFFLELAND
(Adam's POV)
I woke up last, realizing that once again I had slept in my sunglasses. Wow, go Adam, I thought to myself. My eyes, at least, were adjusted to the darkness, so I didn't bother taking them off. I stepped outside, where Jason was holding a couple of apples and eating one himself. My stomach growled as I realized I has skipped both lunch AND dinner yesterday. I took an apple for myself from a pile that Jason had no doubt collected and bit into it, grateful for something to fill my stomach. Ty was sitting on a large rock, staring off into space. He had probably already eaten, I thought as I took another bite of my apple.
Then I took another look at Ty and almost spit out my mouthful. Where had he gotten headphones? I swallowed and looked at Jason, saying, “Jason, why does Ty have headphones on?”
Jason blinked. “What?” He turned towards Ty and shook his head. “I have no idea,” he said. “Hey Ty, where'd you get those headphones?”
Ty jumped and looked at us-he still had his hair covering the left side of his face, so only one eye was visible. “Um... long story,” he said.
“What would that long story be?” Jason asked. I finished my first apple and reached for another, but I accidentally knocked it off the pile and it rolled into some bushes. I got on my knees and pulled them apart, expecting to see my apple there.
Instead, there was a squid's mechanical suit.
“THERE'S A SQUID HERE!” I shouted, jumping back. Jason ran up, worry sparking in his eyes.
“What? Where? Ty!”
Ty sighed and stood up, walking over slowly. “It's not even a squid. It's just a broken suit,” he explained, pulling apart the bushes some more to reveal the cracked glass on the tank that would normally hold the squid's water.
“Oh,” I said, feeling dumb. Then I realized something. “How'd you know it was just the suit? And where's the squid, anyways?”
“Long gone,” Ty said. “I killed it.”
“WHAT?!” Jason shouted. “YOU COULDN'T JUST SEND IT CRYING?!”
“Look,” Ty snapped. “It was the middle of the night. It was the only one, so it wasn't about to retreat to protect its friends. It would have died eventually anyways once I broke its tank. All I did was hurry up the job.”
I blinked. “So... where did you get the headphones?”
Ty took a deep breath. “They were in the suit. I got them after I killed it.”
Jason narrowed his eyes and turned away from Ty. As he did so, I saw Ty's gills open wide and his fists clench. I had a feeling that this wasn't going to end well.
***
Surprisingly, all that happened was Jason wouldn't speak to Ty and Ty himself was completely silent. I led the group, even though I had no idea where we were going. Jason followed right behind me and Ty brought up the rear. I bit my lip when I actually thought about what Ty had done. Sure, I mean, people killed things all the time for food, but being told that somebody you knew had killed... I just couldn't process it.
We stopped for lunch, which turned out to be more apples and some bread, and apart from that continued our trek in silence. Just as I knew Jason was about to suggest we stop for the night, I saw something appear through the trees. I walked faster and noticed that the trees were beginning to thin out. Eventually, I was standing in front of a town on the edge of a forest.
(Ty's POV)
I almost ran into Adam until I noticed that he and Jason had both stopped. I ducked around them and saw what is was they were standing in front of: a town.
My first thought was: We need to warn them. If the squids were persistent, which I was sure they were, they'd find a way here. And in a town as big as this, there were sure to be people easy to capture. I started walking quickly into the town, slipping onto a street and searching for anybody who wouldn't think I was crazy if I told them squids were trying to take over the world. Nobody looked likely.
Eventually Adam placed a hand on my shoulder and said, panting, “Shouldn't we, like, find a hotel for the night? You can do... whatever it is you're doing tomorrow.”
I felt like shouting at him again, like telling him that we needed to help these people NOW. But all I did was nod and follow him to a hotel, where fortunately the person at the desk said we didn't have to pay for the night.
Adam ordered pizza for dinner, courtesy of Jason, who had said it was his favorite food. I turned down a slice and sat in the chair on the balcony, staring out at the rest of the town. I tuned out Jason and Adam's conversation. If I had saved two lives, surely I could save a town. Right?
