Chapter 4: Bringing Out The Butter
(Adam's POV)
I woke up in a strange bed with somebody who had long hair sleeping in a bed on the opposite side of the room. My legs ached. I tried to figure out what the heck was going on, and then I remembered. Squids. Jason. Ty had gills.
I yawned and stood up, stumbling over to the chest which held no meat whatsoever. I opened it and took out a piece of bread, munching on it sleepily. I realized that I, being stupid last night, had actually slept in my sunglasses and felt like facepalming.
I stretched and turned back to Ty, jumping when I saw that he was sitting wide awake on his bed. Hadn't he been asleep only moments before? I stared at him, and he looked at me. “What?” he snapped.
I shook my head. “Nothing.” Ty shrugged and stood up quickly, leaving the bedspread completely intact. I looked guiltily at my own messy bed out of the corner of my eye. Ty opened the chest and took out a piece of bread himself, eating it quickly. We looked at each other for a few seconds before leaving the room and walking down the hallway.
Jason was already up, apparently haven eaten and putting something that looked like pumpkin pie in what was most likely Dillon's cage. I never knew that bats ate pumpkin pie. He looked at us when we came in and gave us an awkward half smile. “So... are you going to be staying a while?”
Before I could say 'yes', Ty shook his head. “We're going to be leaving shortly. You should come with us, though; it's not safe here.”
“You still think squids are evil?” Jason asked.
I opened my mouth to protest. “But Ty has-” I was cut off from a glare by Ty; his red eyes looked really creepy. I didn't get it. What was wrong about having gills? “Nevermind,” I muttered.
“Well, feel free to take a look around before you go,” Jason said, sounding confused. Ty gave him a determined stare, as if he was going to get Jason to leave no matter what. I didn't really pay attention though; I was too busy looking at something hanging in an item frame on the wall.
“Why in the world do you have a stick of butter on your wall?” I asked, looking at it.
Jason walked over. “What?” He examined the item. “Dude, that's a gold ingot.”
“Gold really looks a lot like butter,” I commented.
Ty raised an eyebrow. “Butter?”
I nodded. “Butter.”
Ty smiled and started... laughing! “Wow, Adam,” he said, doubled over. “I've known you for three days, and I feel like you are the weirdest person I will ever meet my entire life.”
Jason blinked. “Wait, you guys have only known each other three days?”
Ty bit his lip visibly. I was too busy standing there, amazed that he had actually LAUGHED. “Uh... yes?”
“How did you even meet?”
Ty took a deep breath. “Honestly, squids kidnapped me and when I escaped, I was right outside of Adam's house.”
Jason rolled his eyes. “You're never going to stop believing squids are evil, are you?” he asked. I took the 'butter' out of its item frame, not really listening to the conversation that followed. Smiling, I decided to keep calling it 'butter' because it had miraculously gotten Ty to laugh-he had seemed so... stoic and mission-y, if that was even a word, like life was some RPG with a very serious mission or something. But now that I knew he could laugh, we might actually get along.
I was just beginning to think about calling all gold 'butter' when I heard a thump. I looked up at the window and jumped. “Hey Ty, Jason! You might wanna come see this!”
“I don't care how bad you think they are, there is no way an innocent animal would suddenly want to destroy humanity!” Jason shouted.
“They're not friggen' innocent!” Ty shot back.
“TY!” I yelled. “THERE'S SQUIDS OUT HERE AND THEY'RE WEARING SUITS!!!”
“What?” Ty ran over to the window and shoved me aside. Outside, there were two squids in what looked to be robots with tanks of water for the chest. Jason came over too, and stopped in his tracks.
“What the...”
“Told you,” Ty muttered. “Do you have any weapons?”
“Um... no?” Jason said.
“Great,” Ty said. “We're going to have to rush them.”
“What?!” I asked. “For all we know, they could turn me into a Adamcake with one swipe.”
“There's two of them, and three of us,” Ty said. “If you have any experience with PvP at all, you'll be fine.”
“Wait, who said I was going?” Jason said, stepping backwards. Ty cast a look at him.
“You're here, aren't you? Now, on the count of three... one... two... three!” Without waiting for either of us, Ty opened the door and rushed outside, starting to grapple with one of the squid robots. I heard some derpy sounds as it pointed excitedly to Ty's neck while looking at the other squid, and some more derpy sounds as the second squid replied. Ty chose that moment to punch the glass tank as hard as he could.
Jason was already out there and pulled the second squid's arms behind its 'back' as Ty continued punching the glass, causing small cracks to appear. Suddenly remembering that I was supposed to be helping, I jumped through the door and punched the second squid. Jason let go in surprise and the squid grabbed me with its suit's arms, lifting me into the air. “JASON I'M REALLY STARTLED!!!!” I shouted, feeling helpless.
Ty delivered a final punch to his squid, causing water to come gushing out of the tank. When the one holding me noticed, it dropped me and grabbed its friend, running back through the woods towards the ocean. “Ya, you better run!” I shouted after them, completely forgetting that it was Ty who had done all the work.
Ty turned to me. “What was that?!” he asked, anger in his voice. “You fight like a two year old!”
“Hey, it was Jason who let go of it!” I protested.
“And it was you who didn't get out of the way before it grabbed you!” Ty shouted, getting in my face. Off task, my mind saw his gills flare and wondered if they reacted when he got adrenaline. They probably did.
“Look, can you guys just stop it?” Jason asked, looking between the two of us with a worried expression on his face.
“If I can't trust you to even throw a punch correctly, how in the world am I supposed to expect you to be any use? This isn't some dumb mining expedition with two zombies! This is a REAL WAR, Adam, and you need to remember that!” Ty said, shouting. I could feel his gaze burning right through my sunglasses. He stood there, taking deep breaths with his red eyes wide, his teeth gritted. Some of his hair had gotten loose during the fight, hanging over the left side of his face. His hands were balled into fists at his sides, his bracelet-things almost falling off. I took a step backwards.
Yeah, I just ended it like that. Deal with it. .3. Now, Adam being startled... you all knew it was just a matter of time. >:)
