Chapter 28: Do you believe in Magic?

(Mitch's POV)

“We're almost there,” Adam promised. I kept my head down and continued to walk. We had already spent most of the day walking to Adam's house, and it still wasn't anywhere in sight. Not that I minded; I'd rather spend three hours walking than sitting around doing nothing, but I was hoping for a little action. Fighting or something. We were just sitting around doing nothing, in my opinion.

“Can we just hurry it up?” Seto asked. His arms were folded tightly, so that we couldn't see his hands, and he had been glaring at nothing pretty much all day. I was pretty sure that he was not in the best of moods.

Ty didn't turn around. “Like Adam said, we're almost there.” I wondered how he knew where his house was; had he been there before? He must've.

“Oh COME ON!” Seto shouted. “We've been walking all day!” He unfolded his arms and let his hands hang by his sides.

Ty still didn't turn around. “Look, Seto, we're almost there. Just suck it up and keep walking.”

Seto glared at Ty and kept walking, clamping his mouth shut. His hands still swung at his sides, and as they did so, I thought I saw something purple come... out of them?

“What's with your hands?” I asked him, walking a little closer.

Seto raised his hands to eye level. Something came out of his palm; a foggy looking thing... and it was purple. I stepped away from him again, and he re-folded his arms. “Don't ask,” he muttered, as a small wisp erupted from his hands again. “Just don't.”

“Don't ask about what?” Adam asked, slowing down a little to walk next to Seto.

“Nothing,” Seto said, turning away.

I exchanged a glance with Adam. “Seto, what's wrong?”

“Nothing!” Another wisp.

Adam pulled his sunglasses down his nose and stared as the purple mist faded into the air. “What the-?”

Seto turned back to us to glare at us. “Look, I'm fine. Just leave. Me. Alone!” As he shouted 'alone' more mist seemed to shoot from his hands; but instead of just evaporating into the air, it went straight for Adam. It wrapped around him like a snake and lifted him into the air, defying gravity. Seto seemed to realize just what was happening and lowered his hands; when he did so, the mist let Adam drop to the ground before retreating back into Seto's palms.

Complete silence. Everybody had seen it.

“What?” Seto asked, glaring at us. “So it's a crime to be abnormal now?” He looked at Jerome and Quentin, obviously implying that if it WAS, we weren't doing a very good job of enforcing it. Without waiting for an answer, he walked off, just a little quicker than the pace we had been going at.

(Quentin's POV)

“Yeah, it's fine,” I told Seto. “I mean, look at me. I don't even HAVE anything 'special'. Your magic trick? That's going to end up helping us. A lot.”

Seto raised an eyebrow from his position on the couch; we had made it to Adam's house after a long while of walking-okay, fine, we had ran. “Funny. How did Ty get soaked?”

I bit the inside of my cheek. “Fine. But the thing is; we're going to be underwater. How much good do you think that'll...” I trailed off as something hit me. We'd be underwater. Ty might be fine, but I wasn't even sure that I would be able to breathe. Jason's spacesuit might be able to do something, but as for the rest of us...

Judging from the looks popping up on everybody else's faces, they were starting to realize it too. Ty was staring off into space. “What are we going to do about this?” Ian asked him, sounding nervous.

Ty didn't respond but instead looked at Seto. “Seto, is that all you can do?” he asked him.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“Look, this... 'magic' thing. Is there anything else you think you could do? Something maybe that would help us?” Ty sounded almost desperate.

Seto blinked. “Well, I'm not entirely sure that-” he stopped talking. I could've sworn his eyes flashed a purple color and then he said, in a completely flat voice, “Yes. There is an enchantment that when applied to a helmet allows the wearer to breathe underwater.” His eyes seemed to drain of color, and he was sitting there, blinking in confusion. “What... did I just say that?” he asked, looking around as if expecting one of us to have said it.

Mitch raised an eyebrow. “Are you feeling okay?”

Seto nodded, a little wearily, and slumped back in the chair. “Okay, so apparently there's a sort of enchantment that we can put on a helmet. Where are we going to get a helmet?” Everybody seemed to dismiss the previous scene at once, myself included. It was too weird to dwell on for long.

“There were plenty back at the Hunger Games tents,” Mitch said. “As well as real weapons. We could head back and go on a... shopping trip.” I glared at my hands; something about the way he said it made me sure that 'shopping' was a code word for 'stealing'. I bit my lip and forced myself to hold back the water that was building in my mouth.

Seto sighed. “Okay, there's one more thing you guys should know.”

“And that is...?” Jason asked.

“We won't be needing to walk to get back to town.”
