Chapter 1: Epic Jump Map Anyone?
(Adam's POV)
I leaned back in my chair, stretching. I had no clue what to do. My house was in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by trees on three sides and the ocean on another. What to do... I stared absently out my window at the water, immediately putting my sunglasses on. The water reflecting the sunlight was harsh! My eyes adjusted to the sudden darkness slowly, revealing the lack of squids in the water. For some reason, there hadn't been any for the last couple of weeks. Not that I minded; I was just curious. Where would they go?
I looked at the beach, covered in extremely grainy sand. Something on it moved as I looked, like a sunspot. I blinked and looked again. The spot was still there, and unless I was mistaken, it was getting larger. I took off my sunglasses and rubbed my eyes to hopefully get rid of it. When I put them back on and looked out, I realized that it wasn't a sunspot I had seen. It was a person.
I blinked. A person? All the way out here? I shook my head, sure that I was halucinating or something, but when I looked again he was still there. I studied him for a second. He had longer than average brown hair and, according to what I saw, he had red eyes. Who has red eyes? He was wearing what looked like a V-neck white and black shirt, and had what looked to be bracelets or something on his hands. He was wearing gray pants and, for some reason, he was soaking wet and covered in sand.
I ran downstairs and opened the door, stepping outside to ask what the heck he was doing all the way out here and why he was soaked. I walked around my house to the side facing the ocean and there he was, with an expression of almost pain and urgency on his face.
“You've got to leave, now!” he said.
“Excuse me? This is my house, thanks,” I told him. “And what are you doing here? And why are you covered in sand?”
“Long story,” he said. “Look, you have to leave, and don't ever go near the ocean, ever!”
“I think you can tell me that 'long story' of yours,” I said. “And what are you babbling about, anyways?”
He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He opened them and said, “Squids.”
“Squids?” I asked.
He nodded. “Yes, squids. They've got a lab and machines and are trying to create a morphing ray to turn humans into other squids.”
I laughed. “Ha, funny,” I said.
“No, honestly,” he said. “I escaped, and just please believe me! You can't stay here; it won't be long before they want another test subject, and you're closest. You have to go, now.”
“Why would squids want to turn humans into squids?” I asked, still skeptical.
“How would I know? Look, you just have to leave. I almost made a hollogram machine to warn people until I managed to escape. You need to get out of here!”
I thought about that for a minute. It still struck me as odd that squids would actually be smart enough to have a lab in the first place, but it helped explain why he looked like he had just come from the ocean-because he had. I still didn't know if I should believe it or not. “Where's your proof?” I asked him.
“Uhm... here,” he said, pulling down the collar of his shirt so his entire neck was revealed. He flinched as I leaned in to examine it. There, on the side of his neck, was a pair of gills. I jumped back in surprise.
“They don't work,” he said quickly. “But that's probably because they're new and still small-eventually they'll grow to fit my neck and I'll be able to, you know, breathe underwater.” He looked me in the eyes-I was amazed that he could tell exactly where my eyes were even though I had sunglasses on. “There's your proof, okay?”
I blinked and shook my head quickly. “Right,” I said. Okay... so aparently he was telling me that he had escaped an evil squid's secret lab after they tested out a squid morphing ray on him and gave him what were currently useless gills. That made perfect sense. “Who are you, anyways?”
“Sorry, I'm Ty,” he said, brushing some sand off his arm and adjusting his collar so that it covered his gills again. I couldn't help staring at his neck for a few more seconds before I realized that he was looking at me, obviously waiting for my name.
“Adam,” I told him. We stood there for a second, with no idea what to say. Finally I said, “So... you think squids are going to want to come here to get another test subject?”
Ty bit his lip. “Probably,” he said. “I mean, if they just lost one...” We blinked in unison and looked at each other, realizing what we were saying.
“How fast can they travel?” I asked nervously. “I mean, they can't breathe on land, can they?”
“They've got suits developed specifically for land travel,” Ty said. “And they're pretty good swimmers... after all, they are squids...”
We looked at each other, wearing matching expressions of fear. It must have been pretty funny to see, if anybody had been around to see it. Then we broke into a mad dash into the woods.
