CH.4 ° Run °
"Bacia? That's a cool name."
I found myself hesitating when the parents rushed towards the boys, the woman frantically stroking the little blonde boys head. I considered sticking around to hear their gratitude to feel some form of self-worth again but the sight of a badge forced me to slink into the shadows, confused muttering growing faint behind my back.
One more night.
Then I would continue my plan, the last thing I needed now was to become distracted.
Thankfully slipping into my room was easier than expected, most of the insignificant people were by the boys and the pool. No more spending time on anything inessential, I opened my soaking journal and phone seeing that both were barely salvageable.
"Goddamn it..."
I was already breaking several laws and knew if I was ever to be caught it would likely be a death sentence, so there was another choice to make however, this one was easy.
The best time would do it around midnight until then I grabbed whatever was available for me to use for that night and slept, my body easing against the mattress as my mind drifted into a dreamless rest.
Only to then awaken to the sounds of alley cats outside my window with the moon high in the sky, Sitting up and getting the bedsheets ripping a large strip of the material before wrapping it around my mouth and nose to at least conceal my identity a little.
Thankfully the screws on the vent in my room were easily removable with a spare penny I found around the bedroom, the space was rather constrictive making an uneasy feeling dwell in my throat. The longer I stared inside the more it began to stretch in front of me before I gave my head a firm shake and muttered to myself;
"I am strong. I have to do this, my purpose now is to watch his bloodied head crackle beneath my fist."
Even the tight squeeze of the vent couldn't hold me back although it did make it harder to shuffle through, I had to take several breaks and many guesses on which way I was going.
"Note to self- try and map out the ventilator shafts beforehand next time."
Many times I hit a split shaft or was able to peek through and see that I was nowhere near my goal. Until the lights of several screens drew my attention, a sigh of relief left me as there was a guard at the chair scanning through the security footage.
When eventually he got up to probably change shifts or go to the restroom I quickly unscrewed she shaft and quietly climbed down behind a stack of boxes, it was at least a two minutes walk from the room to the bathroom but if it was a changing shift it could be four minutes.
Either way, if I was caught it would be over so I tried to sneak closer up to the keyboard, smirking as I brushed my fingers against it.
"Now this. This is more my style."
I watched the clock in the corner of my eye and strained my ear to prepare to slip away, closing down the system and quickly hijacking the code to encrypt a virus within.
A twitch flickered on my face for a moment before I noticed one camera with three figures, the first figure was the guard checking the glass doors to the entrance but the other two were small and crouched behind the reception desk. There was a dim glow bouncing off their hair from the only light in that room and for a split second the words left my mouth,
"Charlie...? Max...?"
As the guard swirled around to walk back towards the door and lean over the counter of the reception desk, I instantly felt myself type into the system frying another camera in that room catching his attention.
The boys seemed almost like they were about to sneak out but instead, they crept up to the guard making my eyes widen, watching as the man fell to the ground seconds later.
I wasted no time and shut the rest of the cameras down, almost running out the room to get to them only slowing down when their voices filled my ears.
"Are you sure about this Charlie?"
"Yes, there's not a doubt in my mind."
"But it's been so long, how can we know?"
Charlie didn't even hesitate to turn around, catching my eyes with a grin.
"Because she came."
