Where to Begin?
There are a lot of things to consider when you begin designing your cover.
1) What is the genre of your book? This is going to set the overall mood of your cover. A horror cover will be vastly different from a romance cover or a fantasy cover. From the images you choose to the colors and fonts.
2) What direction are you going with the cover? Are you going to do an object based cover, typography, or do you want models?
3) Font choice The font you pick will not only have to fit in with the final look of your design but it must also convey your genre to some extent. The font must also be easy to read. Especially if this is for publication. Don't forget that on most sites what a reader sees is a small thumbnail image that is roughly 315X500. They won't see your full cover until they click on your book to find out more. This is where the "you judge a book by it's cover" comes in because readers do decide what to read based first on the cover they see. If your cover doesn't appeal to them, they will move on. Even here on Wattpad the preview image is small, it's about 145X224. So do be aware that your cover make look exceptional full size, when reduced to a tiny thumbnail readers may not be able to make out the design or read the font.
I will attempt to cover as much as I can in this book. If there is something you have a question about feel free to ask.
A small note to all ... Plagiarism is NOT okay in any form, including cover design.
You can certainly be inspired by another designer, but if the design you end up with is too similar you may run into issues. It's always best to err on the side of caution and put "inspired by ________ " on the cover somewhere and make certain it's readable. It doesn't have to be huge, just noticeable. I do not recommend doing this for a published book. You do not want another author coming after you. I've seen it happen. While it is logical there are only so many different layouts to a design, if your model image, font, and background image are the same or nearly the same then there will probably be an issue.
Think of it this way, if you write a story and someone comes along and writes something nearly identical, maybe they just changed the names of the characters or their hair and eye color, but it's essentially the same book, you'd cry foul. It's the same for graphic design. No one wants their hard work stolen no matter the medium. There's no excuse for stealing someone else's work and calling it your own.
A small note about AI ... AI isn't creative. You don't spend hours crafting a story or creating artwork. It is essentially plug-and-play with someone else (in this case the computer) creating for you. The debate has been raging for a while now, with a lot of cover designers on the side of banning AI for this type of work. AI takes jobs away from creatives. I don't condone it and will never use it for my graphic work or my writing. It dims the hard work we put into our craft and marginalizes it. It takes imagination and creativity to do what designers and writers do. A computer hasn't experienced life. It can't write about heartbreak or convey that feeling through its artwork. It hasn't felt loss or lived through tragedy. In short, AI is bad for artists, and authors, and if you followed the strikes that occurred in Hollywood then you know it's bad for actors and screenwriters as well.
