Part 33: Something's Off

He was halfway through his plate before he noticed that Sans hadn't touched his at all. His veil only reached a little past his nasal cavity so he could easily eat. But he didn't seem to be interested in touching the food he had put on his plate.

Toriel seemed to notice as well and leaned in to whisper something to him before he seemed to awaken and move slowly to eat his food. The Queen went back to eating her own food, and Papyrus decided to focus on his own food as well now that everything had been resolved.

Papyrus had paused to take a sip of water when he noticed that Sans's hand was shaking slightly. He watched out of the corner of his socket as Sans placed his silverware down carefully before taking up his napkin and coughing softly into it, folding and setting it aside.

But he didn't fold it enough to hide the blood that stained the napkin.

Papyrus almost spat his water back out, but he managed to keep his calm and set his glass back down gingerly. What the heck!? What was wrong with Sans!? Blood dripping from the mouth of a monster meant that the monster was incredibly close to dying!

He watched with trembling eyelights as Sans muttered a quiet excuse to go to the bathroom before getting up gracefully and leaving the table. Toriel didn't seem worried in the slightest as she continued to eat as if nothing had happened.

But she had to have known about Sans's condition! That could only mean that either she didn't care, or she was the cause of it. Papyrus wouldn't put it down on her to say that it was the latter. He waited a reasonable amount of time before excusing himself for the same thing and trying his best not to run to the bathroom in his worry to find Sans.

He walked down one of the castle's many halls to where the closest bathrooms would be before pausing at the turn, quickly hiding behind the corner. A personal guard stood outside the bathroom door, waiting for the occupant to finish.

Papyrus peeked out of the corner, watching as Sans opened the bathroom door and walked out, the guard following close behind. Sans had taken off his veil so now his face was fully exposed. He looked extremely ill, the pallor of his face sickly and guant. His sockets were lidded and he seemed ready to collapse.

Papyrus was just about to make up his mind to approach Sans, guard or not, when the queen suddenly entered from another hallway, smiling sweetly at her courtesan, her crimson eyes glinting in the hall light. Sans didn't seem to register her presence as he carefully rearranged his veil back on.

"Hello my dear. How are you feeling?" She cooed, approaching the little skeleton until she was right in front of him. He seemed to stiffen at the sound of her voice, but otherwise showed no other reaction, his face betraying no emotion whatsoever.

The queen tsked, putting her paw under the little skeleton's chin and tilting his skull up, looking him over. A shudder wracked his frame before he stilled, his wavering eyelights cast downward in submission.

"Darling, you look like you're about to pass out! Why don't you let me help you?" She smiled softly down at her courtesan. But something about her tone suggested that she wasn't really asking a question.

Sans seemed to take a moment to register her words before he nodded, the motion barely discernible from where Papyrus was standing. Sans's eyelights were dull and unseeing, still not meeting her eyes.
