[04] High Profile Event

Ember was shaken up by the warning Robin had given them as well as how close they were to getting attacked. She had decided not to meet up with Evan and be very cautious of her surroundings.

But the other things in life didn't stop with her having to protect herself from the gangs keeping watch on her. The article she had written on Damian Wayne was published in the morning's paper. She didn't know what kind of acclaim it was met with because there was another task waiting for her.

As she had already written on one of the Waynes and the interview went by smoothly, the editor decided that Ember would be a part of the team going for the coverage of Richard Grayson's wedding.

And she couldn't back out of it.

So that star-studded evening, Ember was with the team of Gotham Daily at the wedding venue, covering a high-profile event that she definitely didn't want to go to.

Richard seemed to know a lot of people and she was certain by then that she could count a hundred or two hundred heads just by the place she was standing. She was co-writing the article with her fellow journalist so the work had been divided between the two accordingly.

As she was new to the job, she was given the task of taking notes on who was attending, what kind of decorations were used, the cuisine, and other details that were supposed to go with the article alongside pictures and interviews.

She was somewhat relieved that she didn't have to go around talking to people as the interviews were being done by her colleague Maya and the camera team was looking after their own work as well.

But even if she didn't have to talk to people, keeping track of all the attendees was still a meticulous task.

There were some popular faces from Gotham that she knew or had heard of but the actual trouble was the hoards of people from Metropolis, Jump City, Bludhaven, and Starling City who were just as famous but quite unknown to her.

She constantly felt that she would miss a significant name and later Maya would tell her off for it.

Maya Lebouf was a much senior reporter compared to her and the woman was known for her spicy, detail-infused articles on celeb weddings, functions, Galas, and other social events that the press covered. And as the details were now left on Ember, she felt that she had to be very particular about everything or Maya would later blame her if something got missed.

So far, she had only gotten the notes on the decorations of the venue but the people were yet to write about. Maya had told her that the best way to gather information did involve talking and she had advised her to approach someone in a friendly way and ask about what other famous people were attending.

Ember still felt a lot out of place at the event and didn't know who to approach. She was standing in the corner, trying to judge who would be easier to talk to until her eyes got caught by an emerald that rivaled the shade of her dress.

Damian Wayne was standing a bit far off with a bespectacled young man around his age who she assumed was Jonathan Kent, the only best friend he had told her briefly about in the interview.

She could talk to Damian, she thought but then changed her mind. He had locked eyes with her for the briefest of moments then looked away as if she wasn't there.

Perhaps he had only talked to her that day for the sake of the interview and he wouldn't entertain any further questions.

She had to look for someone else to get some information out of because the names she had written down in her small notebook were not even a quarter of the list Maya wanted from her.

Damian hadn't overlooked the fact that ever since that interview, he had started to see Ember Sullivan a lot around him. He didn't know if it was a coincidence or not but perhaps he had just started to distinguish her from other people more quickly after interacting with her.

"Is she Miss Sullivan?" Jon asked, following his gaze and he quickly looked away.

"Yes."

"She looks so lonely standing there by herself," Jon remarked, "maybe you should go keep her company."

"No," he kept his eyes intentionally away from trailing back to the redhead reporter, "she is here with her colleagues to probably write an article on the wedding, she must be busy."

A smile creased his lips as he raised an eyebrow playfully, "so you're saying that if she wasn't busy, you could have kept her company?"

"I didn't say anything of that sort. Shut up, Jonathan."

Blue eyes twinkled to see that frown on his face, "alright then if you say so."

Damian knew it was useless to give any excuse to Jonathan who once made up his mind to believe something and then usually stuck with it.

By then Ember was conversing with some other guests and Damian went to find something nonalcoholic to drink. By the time he returned, Jonathan wasn't where he had left him and after a quick scan, he saw him talking to her instead.

"Idiot," he mumbled under his breath, hoping Jonathan didn't say anything embarrassing that would end up in the article in bold.

But then he had read her first article as well as the interview on him she had posted. She stuck to the facts and had hardly changed any quote of his which was quite rare for people in her field.

But then perhaps that was a result of her being an investigative journalist interested only in stating the facts and making analysis on the basis of that.

When he looked back to find his best friend, he saw Ember was taking notes. A smile played upon her lips as she conversed with Jon much easier than those she had been talking to earlier. Jon had that very friendly and approachable persona perhaps that was why she too found it easier to talk to him.

It felt like Jon was telling her all he knew about the guests attending from Metropolis. Knowing that would take some time, Damian looked around to see if there was something else he could occupy himself with.

Jon returned when the food was served and he looked in much higher spirits than usual. But then it was his personality to be a happy ray of sunshine all the time. Damian and Jon were opposites in almost every aspect such that their unlikely friendship confused many.

"If you've done charming her as well, may we get something to eat?" Damian asked, seeing that Jon's blue eyes felt even brighter as a result of laughing.

"Sure, sure. She's nice, y'know."

"Did I ask?" Damian looked quite unaffected by everything but the slight tension in his brow was enough to tell Jonathan what he needed to know.

He shrugged in reply, "no you didn't. I just thought of telling you myself."

"I don't appreciate the unwanted information."

Jon shook his head, the twinkle in his eyes lingering still, "right now you don't. Some day you will."

Damian looked at him, emerald eyes focused in a no-nonsense gaze, "and what is that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing," he smiled innocently, "you'll see when the time comes."
