Twenty-two

Olivia's POV:

"Is everything okay with you and Allison?" Scott asks as we rode our bikes to the Vet.

We were supposed to be meeting up with Derek and he wanted me to be there since Stiles was having dinner with his Dad while Allison was with her Dad as well.

Luckily my mom had the night shift at the hospital so that meant I didn't really have to worry about coming home too late.

"W-What do you mean?"

"Before, you two were close and always hung out after school." He explains. "Now it's...different. Whenever I have you stay with her, you try to avoid her at all costs."

"Well..." I trail off, trying to come up with an excuse. "it's just been stressful dealing with this stuff and hiding it all from my mom. I've been mainly focused on that."

He tilts his head in confusion. "How does that involve Allison?"

"I don't want her to worry about me." I shrug. "She already has enough on her plate with her parents breathing down her neck, watching her twenty-four-seven, and dealing with Kanima," I say and he looks down guiltily.

"Good point," He mutters. "but still. You guys hit it off from the very beginning and I don't want you guys to lose that. For me, I don't think I would've survived if I didn't have Stiles with me."

I nod. "And what about you?" I say, trying to change the subject. "Are you and Allison okay?"

He sighs. "I'm gonna be honest, I have no clue." He responds as we got close to his job. "She's been on the edge about hiding our relationship and the things we know about Jackson with her family."

"But you trust her, right?" I say and he hesitates.

"I don't know. I'm just afraid of the outcome when they find out what we know. When I got called up to the office, her mom asked if I was still seeing her daughter."

I hop off my bike. "And how did that go?"

He gets off his bike as well and leans it against the wall. "Let's just say while she asked the questions, she was sharpening her pencils to the tip."

"Damn," I mumble and place my bike near his. "I knew her mom was intimidating but she's just getting intense."

"Try terrifying." He chuckles.

He opens the door and as soon as we walk in, Derek was standing there with Isaac who was sitting on the chairs that were placed for the waiting room.

"What's he doing here?" Scott glares at Isaac who had a smirk on his face.

"I need him," Derek responds, as they both stand up from the chairs.

"I don't trust him," Scott says as he shuts the door behind us.

"Yeah, well, he doesn't trust you either," Isaac responds and I pinch the bridge of my nose.

"You know what, Derek really doesn't care," Derek says, glaring at the two boys.

"And Olivia is getting a headache," I emphasize, pulling Scott away just in case he and Isaac got into it.

"Where's the vet? Is he gonna help us or not?" Derek impatiently asks.

"That depends." We all turn and see a dark-skinned man, assuming is Scott's boss, lean against the door frame with his arms crossed. "Your friend Jackson, are we planning to kill him or save him."

"Kill him."

"Save him."

Scott and I glared at Derek since he said 'kill him.' "Save him." Scott sternly corrects which causes the alpha to roll his eyes in annoyance.

"Follow me." Deaton orders and we all trail behind him to go to the back of the room.

We all circle around the table and Deaton places a tray in front of us that had several containers. Isaac reaches to grab one but in a flash, Derek grabs his wrist.

"Watch what you touch." He orders and moves his hand away from the containers. I hold back a snicker but Scott nudges my side to stay quiet.

Isaac leans against the table with his arms. "So, what are you? Some kind of witch?" He asks as Deaton grabs one of the containers.

"No, I'm a veterinarian." He simply responds and places the container back. "Unfortunately, I don't see anything here that's going to be an effective defense against a paralytic toxin."

"Honestly, we'll take anything at this point." I cross my arms.

"What about an effective offense?" Isaac suggests but Derek shakes his head.

"No, we already tried. I nearly took its head off and Argent emptied an entire clip into it. The thing just gets back up." He responds.

"Has it shown any weaknesses?" Deaton frowns, confusion forming on his face.

"It can't swim," I reply, immediately getting flashbacks of being trapped in the pool.

"Does that go for Jackson as well?"

I shake my head. "From when I talked to Lydia a couple of days ago, she talked about how Jackson is the captain of the swim team," I say and Scott nods in agreement.

"Essentially we're trying to catch two people." He turns to grab something and in his hands was a medallion with some kind of man in the middle. "A puppet...and a puppeteer." He places the medallion on the table to continue. "One killed the husband, but the other had to take care of the wife. Do we know why?"

Then it hit me.

"Jackson's mom might have been murdered when she was pregnant. He couldn't let it happen with someone else." I say.

"How do you know it's not part of the rules?" Isaac asks, making all of us turn to him. "The Kanima kills murderers. If Jackson kills the wife, then the baby dies too."

"Does that mean your father was a murderer?" Scott asks Isaac.

He shrugs. "Wouldn't surprise me if he was."

"The book says they're bonded, right?" I ask and everyone else nods. "What if the fear of water isn't coming from Jackson but the person controlling him?" I ask and Deaton nods, grabbing one of the bottles from the tray.

"Something that affects the Kanima," He opens the bottle and pours black powder around the medallion. "also affects its master."

"So that means--" Derek tries to say.

"We can catch them," Scott says, finally understanding. "Both of them."

"Are you sure everything is okay?" My mom asks as she parks her car in front of the school. "Usually Allison takes you to school, what changed?"

"She's been busy." I lie but she gives me a look. "Besides, you already signed me up for my driver's test next month since I passed the written test. Pretty soon I'll be able to take myself to school."

"If you're sure..." She trails and I grab my bag from the ground. "I'll pick you up after school toda--"

"No!" I interrupt which causes her to flinch back. "I mean, it's okay. Stiles wants me to study at his place tonight. He has a car." I lie once more but she crosses her arms.

"Olivia, I know I told you to make friends this year, but I still worry about what you've been doing late at night. It's been going on for too long now."

"We're just studying." I insist. "I've been having trouble with assignments so they've been helping me a lot."

She furrows her eyebrows. "Melissa says Scott's grades aren't the best. Are you sure that's the best idea to listen to what he says?"

"Hence why we study. Look, mom, can we talk about this another day? I really have to go." I say as I nod my head towards the school. "I don't want to be late for class."

She sighs. "Fine, go." She says and I push open the door, shutting it behind me. She rolls down the window with a pointed look. "This doesn't mean you get to come home late."

"I know."

"Text me when you get to his house." She starts her ignition, never looking away from me.

"I will."

"And don't be peer pressured into something you don't want to do. You know you're better than that. Like drugs, you better not be doing any."

"Got it, mom."

"And—"

"Mom!" I groan.

"Okay, okay!" She laughs as she starts to pull out of the parking spot. "Love you!"

I didn't say it back and start to walk to the school until a car horn causes me to stop.

"I said I love you, oh sweet daughter of mine!" I hear my mom about again, causing some students around to turn with confused looks as she pressed the horn a couple more times. "I'll leave once you say it back, Olivia Flores!"

I turn around with annoyance. "All right, I love you too!" I shout back, failing to fight the smile that formed on my face.

She grins and I watch as she continues to drive away from the school, but I hear someone chuckle behind me.

I turn to see Matt with an amused look. "What?"

"You weren't kidding about your mom being overprotective." He teases but I shrug. "Anyway, do you know why nobody is getting suspended after what happened yesterday at school?"

"Your guess is as good as mine. It's weird." I say, trying to play along with the act. "I've been busy trying to get tickets to that secret rave tonight."

Scott had explained to me yesterday how he was trying to go to the rave Jackson bought tickets to but apparently, they refused to sell any more.

"You didn't get tickets last night either?"

I shake my head. "Do you know any places that are still selling?"

"No, but I managed to find three online. I was thinking about selling one of the tickets but," He trails and opens his bag. He hands me a ticket that I recognized to be for the rave. "You can keep it."

"Are you sure? I feel like I should give you some money for it if you were trying to sell it." I try to open my bag but he shakes his head.

"No, it's alright. I'm gonna have a blast tonight so you should too." He says and continues walking. "Catch 'ya later!"

This is just getting weird.

I continue walking into the hallway but see Allison's mom staring right at a classroom window with an angered expression. My eyes trail to her hands and see they were clenched tight.

"Mrs. Argent?" I call out and she snaps her head towards my direction. "Is everything alright?"

She huffs and dusts her pants. "It will be." She responds and continues walking down the hallway, her heels clicking as she stormed away.

I slowly walk up to the window she was staring at, my eyes widening at the sight.

Allison was barely pulling away from Scott from his hold, leaving him with a small smile. She says something to him before heading to the other door to exit.

Before I could enter, the bell rings which causes me to roll my eyes. I have to warn him once we meet up again or else who knows what could happen.
