Chapter 9- Up in Flames (+A/N)

(HOW DID WE REACH 3.3K VIEWS?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!

I NEED TO KNOW.

THANK YOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!)

Second Period.

Fun.

The day had already started, and Russia was feeling tired.

As he walked on to Science, he decided that would be the day he would finally say sorry. The events still flashed in his mind. Not many knew why Russia and America seemed upset. In truth, they both wanted to be friends, but something prevented that.

They both knew as clear as day. The argument America had with his grandfather. How he told Russia, in tears, that he had to break their friendship. Russia had yelled at him that it didn't have to be like that.

He shouldn't have yelled.

Russia rubbed the temples of his head. Stop it. He thought. Clear your head. Get a good grade on whatever needs to be completed today. Apologize to him. It's simple.

He walked into class, ignoring everyone possible. What were they doing today? As if he had read his mind, America spoke.

"I'm excited for today's lab, aren't you?" he asked, "Do you know how to light a match with another and a rubber band?" The response was no. Apparently, that was a common answer, as more of the countries chatted, they said the same thing.

Russia did a quick head count. Egypt, Jordan, Türkiye, Greece, Pakistan, Lebanon, Tunisia...

EU walked in and took out some papers while scanning the room. As the bell rang, he took attendance. Nearly everyone was here except, Cuba?

"She's sick." Haiti called from the back, "Mexico's at her house to take care of her, since she lives alone."

"Got it. Thank you, Haiti." EU replied.

When the teacher was done with that, he moved onto the lesson, showing a quick tutorial of their lab. He also reminded them for all the rules about fire hazards. Russia never understood these rules; What idiot would throw a live flame into the trash can?

"And remember: Fire blankets are used for people, not for fires. Fire extinguishers are for fires, not people. With that, you may begin."

Of course people struggled.

The rubber band had to be pulled far enough back, it had to be tight enough, you had to angle the second match right, and so much more that made it difficult. Russia had already tried it 8 times. He could see the struggle at his table.

"No way! How?" Someone exclaimed.

Russia turned around to find a gang of countries surrounding China, who successfully did it. North Korea looked impressed.

"First try? Nice." He complemented.

Russia rolled his eyes and looked towards Japan and America. They weren't there, they were walking towards China, probably to ask for assistance. A few moments later, Egypt also go it. America went to her instead, since China wasn't going to help him and Egypt was all too willing.

Russia felt tired, it felt like everything was in slow motion. He probably overslept again. That was fun.

As the class started talking about China and Egypt's methods, Russia decided he'd rather try to figure it out on his own.

That was until someone screamed.

He didn't know what happened. Everyone ran out the door. EU tried to get them out as quickly and calmy as possible. And for good reason.

One of the tables, the one Ame was at, was burning.

And America was on fire.

Russia couldn't think. He didn't know how long he sat there, staring. Eventually, his senses came back. He grabbed the fire blanket, ran to Ame, and threw it on top of him.

"Use this!" He yelled at the boy who was already desperately trying to extinguish the flames.

America put the blanket on his leg, trying his best. After a bit, he tried to grab the unburned part of table to hoist himself up.

Russia gave up and started to carry him, taking a split second to realize it was bride-style. Whatever, this is an emergency!

He carried Ame out to catch up with the class who was already outside. Thankfully, Russia knew where to find them.

"There you are!" EU exclaimed, but all his enthusiasm of finding his missing students was lost when he saw America.

Russia gently laid the smaller country down onto the grass, being careful, and also checking the burned area. EU called another union over, Nurse WHO, and a country who was assisting her. Rwanda, he remembered.

As they went over how it was going to be, Russia looked at the other countries, who were shocked and dazed from the current event. It's an accident, Russia told himself, we can't blame anyone.

Yet, why did something feel off?

Was it anger? Why would Russia feel anger? Because another student was hurt? He had fixed his nerves to talk to Ame tomorrow.

He blinked, and came back to reality, not even realizing he was zoning out. Nurse WHO, Rwanda, and EU had finished bandaging Ame's leg, yet the poor boy looked traumatized. Russia knelt down, and sat next to him. He took Ame's hand. Russia had yet to apologize, but maybe he could still help.

Ame squeezed, his hands clammy despite the current conditions. Russia felt him shiver.

"Does it hurt?" He asked.

Ame thought for a while. "My thigh does," He answered, "But, I can't feel anything below that..."

Russia looked at his leg. The burns ended somewhere halfway up his thigh. If he couldn't feel anything below that, the burns had to be serious.

"The nerves are damaged," Nurse WHO noted, "Which is most likely why you can't feel pain there."

"But...That's a good thing, right? If I can't feel the pain?" America asked cautiously.

Nurse WHO lowered her head. Russia prepared for bad news. "You can't feel anything  in that leg." Russia wasn't prepared for the next sentence.

"Which means you may never be able to use that leg, ever again."

It was as if time itself stopped. Everyone froze. After a bit, time unpaused, and Russia felt Ame squeeze his hand. The boy was trembling.

Russia looked at America. He felt a strong desire: A desire to protect America. He took his arm around him, and hugged him.

Ame froze for a second, before letting tears fall from his eyes. He accepted the hug, staying with Russia for a bit, before breaking the hug, and wiping the tears from his eyes.

"Sorry," he said, his voice hoarse, "I got your clothes wet with tears."

Russia said nothing as he ruffled America's hair, assuring it was alright, before Nurse WHO shooed him away as an ambulance came and took Ame on a stretcher.

He walked over to NK, who was sitting, overlooking the school. The firefighters were already extinguishing the flames. Russia broke the silence "Are you alright?"

North Korea blinked for a second, "Yes, but something in my memory makes the fire feel weird."

"Weird?"

NK thought for a long while, then said, "Yes. It feels off in a way." He thought for even longer before he closed his eyes.

"What are you doing?" Russia asked.

"Photographic memory." Was NK's answer. He opened his eyes suddenly, they were full of fear.

"What is it?"

NK's breathing was hitched, "The fire, it wasn't normal."

Russia waited, knowing there had to be something else.

"It wasn't an accident."
