Blue (2 days left)

I wasn't so sure if I could possibly consider myself a king of the ocean, but perhaps I was? Or maybe I should say that there are loads of intrepid kings out there, but I'm among the group.

The sea was everything to me, being on top of the food chain and all, and sometimes I boast a lot when I encounter other predators hunting, showing off by going for the biggest swimming prey out there nearest to them. It's not an easy task, but nonetheless, I get it done.

And I enjoy their remarks. Or even their annoyances.

But even being the top predator of a vast ocean could also spell doom if one encounters a not-so-friendly one.

Among the crew was the biggest shark I've ever seen: Megalodon.

They never spoke. Never blinked. Never hesitated. And above all, never showed mercy to any marine reptile.

My friend died from one, and I could recall though my traumatized memories of seeing the immense amount of blood floating to the sea bottom as the shark tore him up like a chew toy.

I'd never see him again, I know that now. But his dream to live as a king encouraged me to rise above the 'pack'. His death shattered me, and his name I keep hidden from all, even those close to me so I don't fall for the same fate, or worse lose myself.

Like how I lost my parents. Even that memory remains locked inside my gut.

Though that was years ago, I try not to stray far off from where I live; near the luminous corals and open ocean. Trees of these colorful plants glowed ion the earth while fish satisfyingly crawled into its body as homes.

Too bad I couldn't gain a home like that. I'd have to flow into larger caves in that manner. Currently, I was roaming the open ocean, after grabbing a few bites of shark a few minutes ago. It tasted funny, however, as if it's been eating sand its entire life.

Yuck!

The sky was growing darker on the surface, and the ocean's prey began to disperse after dark. A midnight sun began to crawl to the starry skies as its partner slowly drowned in water, watching intently at the lush world before its body. I stayed on top near the surface, with glowing eyes in the coming darkness, watching my back and front constantly.

Perhaps you're asking why.

If you think the sea is like a horror movie in the day from countless blood-thirsty predators and brutal flesh tearing fights, you'd be completely fresh-meat at night. Evil comes at night. For a Kronosaurus like me, and being young and all, when night comes, you have to watch your back. I've been attacked at night once, and it wasn't a good experience having a squid on your snout. But tonight was going to be a bit different.

When the sun finally set in the distance and darkness fully consumed the once thriving sea, I floated up the surface, eyes wide and alert for prey, and predators. I felt isolated, the only living figure in the sea from my view, and the corals seemed darkened by the black sky on the surface. Being a Kronosaurus at night though is a good advantage. I could detect things from far away, whatever it is, and smell blood from miles away. And possibly zoom there in a matter of minutes.

But that's for tomorrow.

On the surface, I always wondered how life existed up there. The sky changes colors up there, and standing plants, unlike the floating ones down near the coral, raise high and tall, and quake in the so-called wind from the ocean. Earthquakes, storms, twisters, droughts, anything nature throws attacks up there. And land-dwellers exist on the land, walking on two or four legs. Strange enough to take in such visions for a sea creature, and as badly as I want to experience the outside world, I can't. It's suicide to inhale something that I can't really breathe. Oxygen. Carbon. Air in general. Now that I'm thinking about it, it sucks right now to be a Kronosaurus. I never had the exact experiences as land-dwellers did.

Suddenly, a sound knocked me out of thought, like the bellow of a whale of some sort. Did I also mention that whales are predators of my kind too? Though I do eat them too, they eat us in response. So who's on top? I had no clue. The noise echoed in the same direction as me again, and this time, I felt a sound wave ripple across my scales like a weird kind of spoken phrase.

Curious, I swam a bit closer, now a few meters from the coral and into the open ocean. Squinting my eyes, I noticed a dark figure turning in the light of the moon towards to the ground below, and immediately, I realized that it was a whale, a harmless one. I saw it spiral downwards for a few minutes, slowly descending as I stared at its large body, before abruptly, it stopped.

Then it began quickly swimming up.

I felt confused. Whales need to make up their mind as to where they need to go. But as the creature was swimming upbound in its complicated movement, a larger figure bursted from the darkness and attacked it without warning with one sharp roar. I flinched as I heard its frantic cry of pain as both shadows danced before my eyes, until finally, one flipped over, belly facing the surface, and descended into darkness, black smoke floating from its injury while the other chased excitingly after it.

Well, I thought with a smile, there's the circle of life for ya. Then, I felt a sound wave again, but this time, it was from below me and touched the tip of my tail.

My smile turned into a suspicious frown, and I looked down by turning my head to the side to peek with one eye. All I saw was the light from the moon speed down into the dark world below my fins. What was that? I wondered It sounded loud and big...I grew nervous and slowly began to back swim towards the nearest coral, a few meters away from the dropoff. Whatever it was, it was big and loud.

I looked down again, but I couldn't see anything, not even with exquisite nocturnal eyesight. Fear crawled up my body as I floated still, not making a single noise. It was then when my instincts kicked in, because, at that moment, I felt a shockwave of movement below me, and jerked forwards with a swish of my four fins and energetic tail. I felt a loud thundering booming sound behind me, and a great wave of water and bubbles flash all around. I felt panic rush through me, but stopped to look back at what was chasing me.

But nothing was there.

Just bubbles rising from the ground. Perhaps it was an underwater volcano, and I overreacted. I felt safe. For a second. Another second later, a large head with sharp teeth and an overweight body slapped the ocean surface like a belly flop, knocking me back.

"What the-!" I yelped, beyond confused and horrified at what was now attacking. And it turned into my worst fear.

Megalodon.

The world must really hate me, sending me a predator, especially when I said that megalodons were my worst enemies.

My heart skipped a beat as I spun around, racing my Kronosaurus body as fast as it could go through the rippling waters.

"Where in the world did you come from!" I shrieked, seeing its approaching head and teeth thrusting towards my tail, "You're crazy!" I took a sharp left, then right, making it slow down, then did what all Kronosaurus do best; fight back. I dove underneath the shark, and building up strength in my tail, attacked jaws first into its neck. But it had tough skin. My teeth wouldn't go all the way into its flesh. Angry, it began wriggling and shaking violently to detach me.

"Steady!" I growled, "Stop.....squirming!" I felt a tooth in my front begin to jerk and twist from the shark's fury, and with its final barrel roll in the water, shook me clean off of its tough hide, with my tooth sadly getting ripped off my mouth. I tasted blood in my mouth, a sweet but sour feeling rising on my tongue and in my nose.

"Why would you do that?" I growled, backing up from its approaching face, "Don't you care about teeth? I mean, you got tons of it anyway, so you must brush your teeth 24/7-" It lunged forwards, but avoiding it, I dodged left, feeling its rough skin brush by me. I gotta get out of here, I thought seeing it turn around, facing its beady black eyes at me, where do I go? Suddenly, the shark dropped down with speed, and seconds later, began to ascend up to me. Uh oh. I couldn't move, completely terrorized and hypnotized by its horrifying size and strength. Its mouth began to grow wider and bigger as it came until finally, it instead shut its mouth, and nose bumped me hard in the belly. I would say that the wind got knocked out of me, but, I'm not a land animal. More like the water got knocked out of me. I felt my body get pushed hard out of the water, and for the first time, my entire body got lifted from the ocean. A cold crisp feeling from the world now around me cooled my skin, and the moon looked like a perfect circle, a glowing sun in the night. I saw the shark below me in slow motion, snapping its jaws close to my flipper, a close-call for me, but a complete failure for the shark. My stomach lurched next following the rise, and my back painfully slammed into the water again, a shocking slap on the back that will probably irritate me later on. Everything spun around like a carousel until I finally regained balance with my four flippers. My head ached for a second, throbbing like my own heartbeat in my chest, and when I looked up, I saw the shark attacking once again.

"You just don't give up do you?" I growled, then dodged his attack. Instead of letting him attack again, I followed his near-miss, and rammed my body into the rough hide of the Megalodon, until finally sandwiching him into a rock formation.

A thunderous boom of rock busted out, sand flying everywhere from where I hit the shark. Quickly, I turned my flippers in my rear, and swam backward, looking at the shark lying in pain on the rock face. After a few moments, it struggled to re-float, then swam away from me into the distance ahead.

Out of nowhere, a short sense of pride and joy sprung into my veins. I actually chased away a Megalodon! Without Dying!

In glee, and sheer greatness of my incredible feat (to me), I slowly swam myself back to the coral and fiddled with my fleshy new battle scar in between my teeth.
