Atlas (15 days after)

I never knew who Alicea, the Tarbosaurus was until the day she died. I wasn't even given a chance to meet her either. According to Baja, she was a real hero and a true friend. But I just based it off of her assumptions. At the time nobody knew her, she camouflaged like a face in the crowd. But she died in a flash. And everything changed that moment. The T-Rex, Thunder was his name, was quiet and motionless when all of the carnivores made camp that night, 15 days after impact, and roughly a week after the Tarbosaurus died from her injuries. Queen, Alicea's friend, was also looking upset and saddened by her death. Matter of fact, everyone was sad. Nobody even said a word after we laid down for a quick rest in the darkness of the sky. I didn't know her however, but the fact that her friends lost something truly meaningful and important, shocked me especially hard. It changed the way they acted, the way they lived. Their thoughts too. I was still up when Queen, her youngling; Breeze, Thunder, and a few other carnivorous dinosaurs fell into a deep sleep, being soothed by the waves that crashed upon the sandy shoreline a few miles ahead of us. When they fell asleep, the ones who still stayed awake talked to one another, or were just restless after a long-day's walk through the regional area.

Baja, a Bahariasaurus, and one of my best friends, was sleeping near the stump of a dead tree, her breathing shallow but deep with each inhale and exhale. Me and her escaped the impact with actual pure luck, when we fell into a lake after running for painful minutes, which in turn avoided the firestorm that went over us. Since then we've been traveling together. And hopefully we'll find food out there. Some type of food.

"Indosuchus!" A voice caught my attention, and I spun around to face a small Sinraptor.

"Just call me Atlas," I spoke back, a little agitated by the fact that he regarded me for my species rather than my name.

"Can you keep watch?" He asked, "We need someone to be on the lookout while sleep. You seem energetic anyhow." I shrugged. I was a bit energetic.

"Yeah, I guess I could. But for how long?"

"About two hours should do. We'll switch thereafter." I looked around at the, now sleeping dinosaurs, laying in positions that made them more comfortable. It didn't look comfortable from my eyes however.

"Okay." I dipped my head. The Sinraptor smiled then walked slowly back to his sleeping area, tail drooping low as drowsiness overcame him. He eventually settled down a bit with a curled tail to comfort his sleep, and laid his large head down with his jaw hanging down with an overbite. And just like that, his eyes closed like shuttered, flicking once, twice in fact, before he passed out. That's when I finally was alone. I took in a deep breath watching his chest rise and fall from each breath in a deep sleep, and decided that perhaps it was time to do my job for once.

Whatever Lookout meant.

I've never done lookout before. It sounded dull and boring to me.

You just look?

And do what after?

My eyes flashed a bit as I glanced at the dinosaurs who slept soundly and peacefully next to each other. My eyes turned toward Baja, who slept in Grace and harmony comment as if whatever her mind was set to words in her sleep we just as joyful as the sounds of safety. I decided to lay down, nearby Baja, for lookout duty to rest my legs. They felt worn out and tired, muscles cramping constantly, and toe claws so weak, I can barely curve them into the deep soil. I stared out into the darkness of the night, or whatever time it was, breathing slow and steady, allowing my soul to flow freely around my body. I felt a warm comfortable breeze flow through my scales softly, then tickle the tip of my tail a bit. Despite of the destruction and lifeless land that we slept in, the world still looked and sounded just as beautiful as before everything fell. The waves, a few miles away, crashed onto the beach gracefully, pulling in sand and dropping off sediments of rocks, bones, and shells. Foam spluttered from each crash, bubbles popped, then disintegrated as it pull back and reset. The sky above was quiet, though smoke scented, and flowed like low clouds all over the world. Before the impact, I could recall, the trees were taller than my own body, flowing with the wind in a rain-like sound as the leaves fluttered against each other. But now they were lifeless stumps on the droughted earth, burnt and decapitated. I yawned suddenly, opening my mouth wide with all my pointy teeth, then closed slowly with a weak bite down. Perhaps being a lookout was a bit tiring, though it did keep my mind off of things and focus onto the real life world. And this redirection brought me to a higher revelation of my homelands, dragging my dead body into a Wonderland of different sounds, shapes and smells.

My nostrils flared a bit as I tried to sniff out some scents that could keep me awake and occupied for the time being. I did catch some interesting scents, besides the salted strong fragrance from the ocean. I caught the bittersweet odor of sap from afar on a dying plump acacia tree, then felt a sour aroma of algae spring in my nose. A cool clear crisp wind was another one I smelled out before the smoke-filled air above me. Each scent was different and unique in a new way, and perhaps challenged my own nose into helping me become a better hunter.

I thumped my tail on the ground, feeling each vibration like a drum in my underbelly and hummed a little old song I remembered from my childhood.

Dum, Dum, Dum, Dum-Dum, Dum, Dum: My tail went.

Hm, hm, hm, hmmmm.....hm, hm, hmm...: came from my throat.

I heard constant snores and dreaming mummers from the other carnivores and sighed. Thankfully I wasn't tired like them. So I could enjoy a little peace for a while.

Sounds were another thing I was picking up besides my sense of smell. The sounds were quiet and quick often times. There were splashing sounds, thunderous sounds, and sudden sounds I've never heard off. I heard a strange noise, like the ground itself was ripping apart.

And it was.

A huge crack slit its way through the ocean onto the beach, flowing quick and subtle through the earth. I watched in curiosity as the crack twisted and turned towards me, then stopped short below my jaw. I stared at the crack, like a mini trench in the ground, trying to understand what it meant. That's when it happened. A huge roar from underground screamed to the surface in huge vibrations. The ground jolted forwards hard, making me shift forwards and back, like an elastic band. The rocks nearby me bounced forwards, slid backwards, then bounced back and forth, side and side and back again constantly. And just like that, it stopped. I didn't realize that I was holding my breath, and let out a big exhale of terror. What was that? An earthquake? After the ground settled back down, I stood up to my jelly-like legs, rocked but okay from the quake.

"What happened?" A voice wondered. The Sinraptor, Apen was awake.

"An earthquake I think," I guessed.

"Yeah, I felt that in my sleep, went right through me," He sleepily moaned, "But its good that I'm awake. You could rest now, you're shift's done."

"It was two hours already?"

"I think so," Apen muttered, "Or perhaps I ended you early."

"No need Apen," I shook my head, turning back to the skies the nature, everything, "I think I'm actually fine for now. I could do a couple more hours. You need more sleep than me."

"Huh," He grinned, "you're younger than me though. Oh well, whatever suites you." He padded on back to the warm spot on the ground, curled up in a circular ball and fell asleep. I turned back to the view of the world around me in awe and breathed in as much fresh air as possible. But I cut off halfway.

The sudden sound of thunderous water moving away entered my ears from a distance. The blue ocean was being strangely dragged back to the horizon in the distance, like some sea monster was tugging at it to pull it over his body like a blanket. I grew confused and worried, and decided to check out whatever was going on. Slowly, I stomped over to the cliffside, then stared out to the horizon. The wind was beginning to strangely howl towards me, and I squinted my eyes from the burning heated atmosphere to see properly. The water was moving backwards. Eventually, it reached the point where I could no longer see it, and all that remained was a freshly laid and smooth desert of ocean sand. Something strangely tall on the horizon lifted, moved, and did all sorts of things life-like, but as it did grew evermore bigger and bigger. Eventually it began to swirl and move, until it looked like a wave. A giant rocking wave....

And that's when I understood.

My heartbeat abruptly accelerated when I saw a humongous tsunami in the distance rise like nothing I've ever seen. Everything around me shrank back as my vision widened, with deep terror gripping me by the foot. I spun around quickly and loudly stomped back to the snoring carnivores on the ground.

"Sorry for this," I whispered, then let out a loud bellowing roar. Everything around me shook when I roared from my throat, before closing my jaws shut to stop the sound. Literally everybody's eyes snapped open in unison. And so did their comments.

"What the-"

"Ugh."

"WOAH! I'm awake! I'm awake!"

"Why are we awake?!"

"Yeah, why'd you wake us Atlas?" Apen asked on the side of me.

"Atlas?" Baja's voice came to my ears as she laid on the ground delirious, "What's going on? Why'd you-"

"We need to go!" I cried out, pointing with my tail to the incoming tsunami, "There's something coming! On the horizon!" Apen brushed past me and stared out from the edge, only to withdraw in shock and horror.

"Oh my...." He gulped, then spun around, "Run..." Everyone stood still, unable to understood what he meant. But he roared the demand at us with ambition.

"RUN!" At his second roar, every carnivore suddenly looked scared and began to sprint away in thunderous sprints, shaking the earth.

"Apen, let's go!" I called to him, seeing the wave finally clear up in my view. I could only describe it as a dark, evil wall of death, a blue wall in this case, crushing all in sight. Rocks that were underwater the entire time were being cracked and shattered into pieces in a matter of seconds. And if it could do that to a rock, what about us? I turned after Apen rushed pass me, and began my own dash forwards into the ranks of the many carnivores. Everyone was panicked and terrified, running inland. But then, everything went south. They decided to run in different directions.

A few went right.

A few went left.

A few went into a canyon trench.

And a few went right across the side of the coast like dummies.

I stopped Baja and Apen before we could make our move and roared out,

"Wait! No! Come back!" But it was too late anyways, since I saw them all vanish in seconds thereafter my roar. Thunder and Queen went through the middle canyon. And I felt that they were smarter than the rest. They led the group. And they've brought us this far. We couldn't abandon them next.

"Which way?!" Baja cried.

"Into the canyon!" I called back, "We gotta follow them!" I heard a slowly uprising noise enter my ears, and turned around, watching the tsunami get closer and closer, like a huge sandstorm on wheels.

"C'mon!" I hissed, nudging the two forwards into the canyon. They trampled off, while I followed behind them, nose on their hind tails. We caught up to a few dinosaurs, and eventually passed them, up until we were a few tail-lengths behind.

"Thunder!" I roared out, catching up to his side.

"Everyone!" I panted, "They went in all directions! They split from us!" Thunder's eyes flashed, and he skidded to stop on the dust.

"They WHAT?!"

"What happened?" Queen called muffled, holding her egg and baby in her mouth.

"They split!" Thunder growled, then turned to me, "We gotta go back! We can't leave everyone behind!"

"Why would they split? Don't they have some common sense?" Queen rolled her eyes. Thunder's last sentence made my stomach lurch, and I quickly blurted out to stop him.

"Wait, go back?" I countered, "Are you serious? The wave's upon us! We won't make it!"

"We have to try!" Thunder growled, "They'll die!"

"We'll die!" I snapped, but Thunder was already off, pushing through the small crowd back to the entrance. I turned to Baja in worry and breathed in hard.

"I gotta stop him,..." I uttered, "...he's going to kill himself!" I began rushing off, stomping hard into the earth with my knees low and eyes peeled in preparation for the worst. But that's when something violent happened. A huge jolt of the earth threw me, and everyone behind me off balanced to the left, then back again. I slammed into the nearest wall as an assist, cracking its side hard.

What was that? I wondered, slipping to my balanced feet once again. But I already knew that answer. I pushed away from the wall to the center of the large canyon, staring straight and hard towards the curve at the entrance. I didn't see anything at first, just the canyon and the shadow of something large. But that's when Thunder reappeared. And he looked like he saw a ghost. He busted through a few dinosaurs, until he was a few meters ahead of me.

"Thunder, wha-" I cut off. Seconds behind him, a huge wall of water came crashing down into and over the canyon with a powerful boom of force. I didn't even think at first. I just ran. I spun and ran. But I knew, none of us were faster than that monster. Even if we were the fastest carnivores in this region. I felt mist strike me on the shoulders, drenching me already before the worst could come. And fear hit its tipping point in my soul. I was right alongside Baja, out of breath, and tired. Thunder and Queen sharply turned right, straight into a nearby carven. And in seconds, it was enveloped by the water itself.

"NO!" I screamed, seeing their bodies vanish. And other dinosaurs joined the same fate. The tsunami barrelled downwards from its wave-like structure, into a flowing river. One dinosaur just got slammed by the new wall. Another got swallowed in ease, before he let out a bone-chilling last cry. I spotted a cave on my right and quickly lifted Baja by her underbelly and jerked hard, throwing her into the darkness. Apen got hit by her fall, and they both tumbled into the cavern with a ground-shaking crash.

"ATLAS!" Baja screeched, watching me back up in fear as the wave thundered towards me. I struck a wall thereafter and just laid there, watching the sea attack me with power. I couldn't explain how horrifying it was to watch a wave strike me towards the last seconds of consciousness and breathing. Like a tail coming to whip you that you're unable to avoid.

And that too has happened to me.

My eyes were wide as the seconds counted down, and sudden flashbacks of the firestorm from before flashed onto the sight of the wave. And before I was hit, I slapped my eyes closed and covered my face with my tail. But I already knew that wasn't enough.

I never knew how painful it was to get struck by a wall of water. It was unlike anything that I've ever felt.

I thought getting hit with a tail was worse.

But this was extreme.

My chest literally went concave from the impact, and my body get thrown backwards into the wall, back-first, violently. My tail went up, feet as well, and the wind got knocked from my lungs. My skull rang like a bell from the crash, and a sickening crack knocked me out immediately. And all went quiet. Dead quiet.
