CHAPTER THREE, stuff about the future

Alivia stared at him in shock, her jaw dropped. Wait, so that really meant this was Adam...Just as an adult. But how was that possible? Before she even realized what was happening, she felt herself falling backwards, the same time her brother was beginning to faint.  Alivia gasped when the man grabbed both Alivia and Adam and pull them back before they fell.

"Where are you two goin'?" Adam began wheezing, causing the man to roll his eyes. "Oh, God." He grabbed his inhaler in Adam's pocket as he knelt in front of him. Alivia watched in surprise, her heart racing while he shook the inhaler and helped Adam used it. He knew exactly where Adam put the inhaler and knew what to do. She couldn't believe this was happening.

"Here, deep breath." The man instructs. "Hold it. Three, two, one." He then put the inhaler back in Adam's pocket once Adam calmed down. He pats Adam's shoulders. "Everybody gets a trophy." Then he sighed after noticing Alivia was panicking. "Great, now you're having a panic attack. That's the last thing I need." He mumbles. He moves to kneel in front of her with a soft expression. "Ali, its alright, okay? Remember what we do when you have panic attacks? Count to five on each in breath and each out breath until you calm down. Close your eyes, focus on your breathing."

Alivia tries to follow his instructions to calm down and she had trouble at first. But when he started doing it with her to guide her through it, she finally calmed down. "Good." He smiles at her. "Better?" He asked and she nodded in response. She couldn't help but stare at him in shock though because she had no idea how he knew how to calm her down.

"When I was seven, I ran into a table on the patio. I got twelve stitches." Adam said, pointing at the bottom of his chin the same time the man does.

"Right here." They both spoke in unison.

"This is crazy." Alivia comments, shaking her head with furrowed eyebrows. She fidgets with the charm bracelet she always wore. "How is this happening?"

"Stop messing with your bracelet, everything's okay." The man reassures her and she froze, glancing at him with surprise. "You mess with your bracelet when you're anxious." He explained which surprised her even more.

"You knew how to get into our dad's garage. You know how to close the fridge. You know how to time my breathing. We have the same scar. You know that Alivia has panic attacks and you knew how to stop it. You know that Alivia messes with her bracelet when she's anxious." Adam glances down at the man's wrist, his eyes wide with surprise. "And you're wearing our dad's watch." He raised his wrist the same time the man does. The man looks at him with a soft smile. "This watch." Adam spoke, pointing at the watch he wore.

The man nods. "This watch."

"You're really him." Alivia realizes, staring at him in shock. "Just...A lot older."

"I'm not that old." Adult Adam commented, looking offended.

"You're me." Adam's eyes widen. "Holy sh-"

"That's classified." Adult Adam interjects. "But yes..." He nods. "I once was." He then coughed and his wound made a fart noise.

****

The siblings followed Adult Adam into the woods once he was done dressing his wound. "I can't believe you're future me." Adam said with surprise. He held the flashlight as the trio walked through the woods.

"Okay, you came to terms with that pretty quickly, didn't you?" Adult Adam voices. "It's a little disturbing, actually."

"I didn't. I'm still in shock." Alivia admits, her expression was a mixture of confusion and surprise. "I have so many questions. What are you doing here?" She was still trying to wrap her head around the fact that this man is her brother in the future.

"Rescue mission." Adult Adam responds. "I wasn't supposed to land here. I was aiming for 2018. I need to get there as soon as possible."

"How do you mistake 2020 for 2018?" Alivia furrowed her eyebrows.

"Who were you trying to save in 2018?" Adam curiously asked.

Adult Adam raises his eyebrows. "Really?"

"Fine." Adam sighs. "Can you at least tell us how you got here?"

"I'll show ya." Adult Adam pressed a button on the necklace he wore and a loud wooshing noise is heard. The siblings looked up, following his line of sight to see a neon blue hue filling the night sky when a loud crackle noise is heard.

"What was that?" Adam inquired, aiming the flashlight in the sky.

"Crap." Adult Adam frowned.

"What?" Adam raised his eyebrows.

"Is something wrong?" Alivia furrowed her eyebrows.

"Uh, we're gonna switch to plan A which is where you come in." Adult Adam replied, glancing at Adam.

"Plan A?" Alivia chuckles. "Don't you mean plan B?"

"Nope, I mean plan A." Adult Adam shakes his head. "You see, time jets, like all tech in the future, is coded to its user's DNA. Because I'm injured..." He grimaces. "Aah, they just won't even clear me to fly which means I can't get in there to fix her." He looks at Adam. "But guess who can?" He showed his necklace to Adam, who pressed the pendant and it emits a bright light. Then a whirring sound is followed by the sound of power building up.

The trio glances up above them as the sound of engine humming filled the air. Alivia and Adam watches in awe as a time jet appears. "There she is." Adult Adam smiles while the hatch from the bottom drops down and a small platform comes out. It went down to where the trio stood and Adam had no problem with stepping it. The kids, however, were a bit hesitant.  "Away we go." He steps on, glancing at Alivia. "You're still not afraid of heights, are you?"

"No." Alivia hesitantly replied. She recently got over her fear of heights, but she was still a bit iffy being so high up in the air.

"Good." Adult Adam smiles a bit. "And if you are just..." His voice trails off as he shrugs, sending her a small smile. "Don't look down." Alivia and Adam stepped onto the platform next to him, watching in awe as the platform lifted them up into the time jet.

"Okay, sit down." Adult Adam said.

The siblings stare at the inside of the time jet with an awestruck look. "This is amazing." Alivia grinned.

Adam pouts when he realized the man didn't tell Alivia to sit down. "Why isn't she sitting down?"

"'Cause I trust her more than myself." Adult Adam confessed. Alivia grinned while her younger brother looked offended. Alivia stood behind the chair, leaning her arms on top of it and watched Adult Adam.

"Let's see what we're dealing with here. Alright, some minor shield damage. Coolant leaks." He grimaces when he noticed a flashing red light. "I don't know what that is, but when is a flashing red light ever good?"

"Never." Alivia replied.

"Right. Yeah, so it's bad." Adult Adam nods. "Ah, da, da, da." He stops Adam from reaching to touch the buttons. "I know you both wanna touch all the pretty buttons with your sticky little child fingers, but the reactor has a quantum signature. You fire it up, they can find us. If they're here."

"'They'?" Alivia stared at him in confusion and curiosity. He wasn't doing anything to stop the ongoing questions that were forming in her mind. She was getting less answers and more questions.

"Who are 'they'?" Adam questioned and Alivia was glad he asked that because she was wondering it as well.

"I'm glad you didn't ask me that 'cause 'they' are classified." Adult Adam answered.

"Come on!" Adam whines. "We already know you're from the future."

Adult Adam nods, still looking at the control system. "Believe me, I regret that. I had no intention of coming back to revisit." He looks at his younger self, gesturing to him. "This." Adam looked at him with offense.

"Then why would it hurt to tell us who 'they' are?" Alivia inquired.

"'Cause it's classified." Adult Adam replied, earning a groan from the two siblings.

Adult Adam looks back at the control system and continues fixing the ship. "Okay, I've isolated the damaged relays, so the ship should be able to start repairing itself." He pressed the pendant on his necklace and it lights up.

"How long will that take?" Adam asked him.

"Ah, it's at 50% capacity," Adult Adam notices. "So hopefully less time than it takes me to heal." He moved to walk away, but Adam and Alivia turn around in the chair to face him, both of them holding onto the back of the chair as Adam turned on the flashlight, aiming it at his future self.

"Wait." Adam said. He looks curious. "Do you remember this?"

Adult Adam covers the flashlight since it was aiming right at his face and furrows his eyebrows. "Remember what?"

"This. Right here, right now." Adam respond. He looks at his older self curiously. "You being here in 2022?"

"Okay, I know where you're going with this." Adult Adam nodded.

"I mean, if this is happening to me-"

"You're wasting your time." Adult Adam interrupted him, looking annoyed.

"That means it already happened to you, right?" Adam continued and Adult Adam groaned in annoyance.

"That's a good point." Alivia realized.

"Unless it works like a multiverse, where each ripple creates an alternate timeline-"

"It's not a multiverse!" Adult Adam snatches the flashlight from him. "My God, we watched too many movies."

"I just wanna know." Adam said. Alivia coughs, elbowing his side which caused him to wince. "We wanna know." He corrected himself.

Adult Adam sighs. "Okay." He nods. "Okay, the prevailing wisdom is that when I go back to my fixed time, my memory...Our memories, they reform, they reconcile. But not while I'm here."

"You lost me." Alivia commented, staring at him with confusion. She didn't understand anything he just said and she knew that Adam didn't as well.

"Fixed time? What's that?" Adam questioned.

"There's only one place in time where you belong on a quantum level, where you're not screwing around with the cosmos like I am." Adult Adam.

Alivia snickers. "So you're like Barry Allen with messing up the timeline?"

"Sure, whatever." Adult Adam rolls his eyes at her remark. "That is your fixed time. Where you actually belong."

"So by being here and telling us this, you may have just chanted my whole future?" Adam asked, staring at him in shock and Alivia's eyes widened with surprise.

Adult Adam shines the flashlight at Adam. "Honestly? Your future is pretty tragic either way."

"Ouch." Alivia commented.

"I'm kidding!" Adult Adam laughs. "I'm kidding."

"Are you?" Alivia raised an eyebrow.

"I'm not kidding." Adult Adam shook his head, turning off the flashlight while Adam kept staring at him with shock.

Adult Adam turns the flashlight on. "I'm kidding. Let's go. Come on. Here we go."

"Wait, are you kidding or not?" Alivia said with frustration. "Make up your mind!"

"So, what happens now?" Adam asked as he and Alivia follow Adult Adam back to the garage.

"Nothin'." Adult Adam replies. "I'm just gonna lay down. Let this bullet wound heal." He lays down on the couch. "Think about some key investment opportunities for your future."

"Wait, like Bigg from Back to the-"

"Are you out of your tiny mind?" Adult Adam interrupts his younger self, staring at him with furrowed eyebrows. "Get back in the house before our mother gets home, both of you, and don't make it weird."

"Hey." Adam called out after a moment of silence filled the air.

"Yes?" Adult Adam said with frustration.

"This is amazing." Adam grinned and Alivia glanced at him with surprise.

"Isn't it, though?" Adult Adam asked, his voice laced with frustration. "Do you mind hitting the light on your way out?"

"Wait, don't you need to get the bullet out?" Alivia questions worriedly. "I can try and help take it out."

"I'll be fine." Adult Adam reassures her, a bit surprised she offered to help but it made him smile. "I'll get it."

"Okay." Alivia smiled a bit and followed Adam out of the garage with Adam turning off the light before they left.

****

When their mom got home, Alivia and Adam sat on the couch and Hawking laid by Adam. Alivia had her acoustic guitar on her lap, just messing around and playing random chords.

"Oh, hey." Alivia stops playing, and she glances over at her mom along with Adam. "I'm surprised you two are still up."

"Well, this night's been full of surprises, mother." Adam responded.

"That's chilling." Ellie comments. "What happened?"

Adam stands and walks over to her, ignoring her question. "How was your not-a-date? Will you be seeing him again?"

"No." Ellie cringes. "I don't know. I don't think so."

"Are you sure?" Alivia tilts her head to the side, glancing at the door with furrowed eyebrows when there was a knock. "Who would be at the door this late?"

Ellie opens the door, smiling at Derek. "Hi." Derek greeted with a smile.

"Hi." Ellie responded.

"Me again." Derek said.

"Yes, it is." Ellie nodded.

"You left your scarf in my car." Derek explained, holding up her scarf with a small smile on his face.

"I did." Ellie sheepishly smiles, taking her scarf. "Gosh, thanks."

Hearing this, Alivia carefully sets her guitar on the couch and stands, walking over to her mom along with Adam. They stand a few feet behind their mom, watching curiously. "Oh, hey there, kids." Derek greeted with a smile.

"Oh. This is my daughter, Alivia, and my son, Adam." Ellie introduces her kids, gesturing for them to come over to them. They move to stand by her with polite smiles. "Alivia, Adam, this is Derek."

"Hi, nice to meet you." Alivia spoke with a smile, acting way more polite than Adam was. Ellie was grateful that at least one of her kids were being polite.

"Nice to meet you too." Derek smiled.

"Hello, Derek. You have a wonderful mouth mullet. You must be very proud." Adam commented and Alivia stifled a giggled.

"Oh, my gosh. Adam." Ellie chuckled nervously, shaking her head with a cringed look, glancing at Derek apologetically.

"I actually never heard it called that before." Derek chuckled.

"Well, thanks again." Ellie smiled.

"Sure. Uh, see you soon?" Derek asked.

"Unlikely, but I'll be sure to put in a good word for you." Adam cut in. With a small chuckle, Alivia rolled her eyes at him and flicks the back of his head. "Ow." He whined, rubbing the back of his head. Alivia knew that most likely their mom wouldn't see this guy again and she knew Adam knew that as well, but he didn't need to say that out loud.

"Okay. Okay." Ellie sends her kids a look and then glances at Derek with a smile. "I'll see you at work.

"Yeah." Derek nodded.

"Bye." Ellie spoke as she began to close the door. Just before the door closed, Adam changed the sweet smile to a threatening stare as he pointed at Derek, who looked surprised. Alivia chuckled a bit at her brother while the door closed.

"He seems nice." Adam comments. He shrugs after seeing the look his mom sent him. "What?"

"You can be a real jerk sometimes." Ellie replies, shaking her head and Alivia frowns, growing more sad when she noticed tears in her eyes. "You know that?" She sighed and walked away.

Adam's shoulders drop in defeat, staring forward with a sad look. "Adam?" Alivia said with concern, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.

He sighs. "I'm fine."

A/N literally loving alivia's relationship with both adam's right now :)i forgot how funny this movie is
