I smacked my lunch down beside my best friend, Lucy Iku. "I had the weirdest dream last night!"

She didn't look up from her sandwich. "Which was...?" She bit the top of it and ripped it off with her teeth. I sat down, my green pigtails bouncing. "I'm waiting," Lucy said with her mouth full.

"A white cat came up to me and said 'If you could have any wish what would it be? Tell me, I can make you a magical girl!'" Lucy stared, light purple ponytail whipping her cheek as she jerked her head back to the small chunk of sandwich left. This was her beckon for me to continue. "I told her... Uh, him? Um, I told it that I would want to be able to summon both the dead and the fictional! Then this orb-my soul, I think-came out of my chest."

Lucy's chocolate eyes were glued on the hand tucked in my pocket. "So... Um, I grabbed it,and this egg-shaped gem took its place! I was the same green as my hair!" She nodded and met my eyes finally.

"What was so weird? It's just a dream. I dream about weird crap all the time, too." She tossed the tiny square of sandwich into her mouth. The fist in my pocket grew tighter around the object.

"Well, the weird part is..." I pulled my hand out to reveal a green, oval-shaped gemstone in gold plating. "...this was in my hand when I woke up." Lucy snatched it up. She's obsessed with rocks and minerals.

"I've never seen a rock like this! I can't identify it with any others!" She looked up, staring intently. "Sure it was a weird dream... But was it real!?" Her voice hushed down to a whisper.

Suddenly, a shadow sat in the window. I looked carefully and there, I saw the cat from my dream. Grabbing Lucy's wrist, I dragged her out the door towards it at my fasted pace. "Slow down!" She yelped, trying to pry herself off of me. Then she noticed the cat.

"Oh, hello!" It smiled at us. "This must be Lucy Iku! Nice to meet you! Glad to see that you're already friends with my newest magical girl."

Lucy dangled my gem in front of the cat. "What the bloody hell is this!?"

"Her soul gem. It actually is her soul." Lucy absorbed the last five words and gently handed the gem back to me. "Oh yeah, my name is Kyubey!"

"You... Are a TALKING... CAT!" I was shocked. Lucy never lost her cool like that.

"Actually, I'm an Incubator. I'm not from this planet."

"Well, what were you doing in my dream?" I asked.

"I made a contract with you. You made a wish, I granted it, and now you'll fight witches!"
