Vingt-Quatre

The doctors were meant to be the smart one, the ones that help and aided you but Quil refused to believe there diagnosis. They said Andy wouldn't wake up,at least not for a while but he couldn't, wouldn't, believe it.

Ever since she was transferred to Forks, he had tried to visit as often and as much as possible. It was strange at first, not knowing anyone that was there. He would just sit next to her bed and wait for her to open her eyes.

Because he knew she would open her eyes.

She would open her eyes despite being in a coma for a little over two months, and she would open her eyes even if the doctors had ran out of hope. She would be all right, because he wasn't sure if he would be okay if she wasn't.

Seeing her like this made him feel sick, like a part of him was missing.

He didn't care if she was going to have scars, and he didn't care if she no longer wanted to live in Forks anymore. He just wanted her to wake up. As long as she was well and happy, he would be as well.

When Quil woke up that morning, he decided to skip school entirely and head directly into the hospital that day. May 25th, Andy's birthday. He left like today would be different, it had to be different.

The hospital was eerily quiet, still, it made him feel as if everyone were waiting for something to happen.

It didn't take him long to reach Andy's room, but he wasn't prepared for what he say.

Isabella stood outside the room, crumpled into her boyfriends arms. Tears streamed down her face, making Quil stop dead in his track. All the evidence stood in front of him, but he couldn't peace it together. Alice Cullen stood to the side, a broken expression on her face.

"Andy," Quil choked out. Alice looked toward the boy, pain shot through her at the sight of him. This wasn't the future that Alice had seen for them, this wasn't the future she had seen for Andy.

Alice reached forward and squeezed his arm in comfort. "She's stable for now, but they don't think she'll last much longer. You can go in and see her if you would like."

Quil took a shaky breath and went into the room, not sure if he had responded or not.

She looked the same. Nothing was different, nothing changed, she was still Andy. Her chest moved up and down steadily, as if she was merely sleeping and would open her eyes any moment.

"It wasn't meant to end like this," he whispered. "We were supposed to be friends and I was going to finally ask you on a date. We were meant to be the cutest, most obnoxious couple ever."

The heard monitor continued to beep steadily in the background.

He wasn't sure when he had stared crying, but he didn't attempt to push his tears away. Instead he just held her hand like it was a lifeline. He had convinced himself that she was going to be alright, he felt stupid for thinking that he knew better than the trained professionals.

Quil knew that he should be leaving any moment, to give other people a chance to see her but he just kept telling himself just one more minute.

The beeping of the heart monitor was a constant in the background, teasing him. Reminding him of what he could have been.

The twitch of a finger cause Quil to freeze. Looking down at her, he thought he had imagined it. The frenzied beeping of the heart monitor proved he wasn't going crazy.

It was dark, so very dark and Andy felt so entirely lost. She had no idea where she was, or why she was alone.

The way she had viewed it, darkness was her friend. It hid her away from the pains and aches that the light brought. But she missed the light.

Darkness was the depths of the ocean where her life would teeter on an edge and she would try to hold onto the air that rested in her lungs. And then she gave into it. She let it fill her and surround her and she learnt that the dark was only the ocean when the light was around.

There was no light in the dark. There was no shadows, or corner. It was vast and endless. It was empty.

Andy didn't know how long she was in the dark, there was no concept of time but she could hear her heart beat and whispers of words. Pleas and prays for her health, for her to wake up.

She wished she could tell them she was awake, that this darkness wasn't sleep because in sleep she wouldn't feel guilt or sadness, she wouldn't feel lonely.

It was different when he came. With him, she never had a concept of time, so it felt normal, it felt secure and safe. He made her feel safe, like he was her protection when she couldn't see, when she was it the darkest parts of her mind, locked away. Whenever he was near she tried to let him know she was still here, tried to comfort him by squeezing his hand in return. She never knew if he felt it.

He brought tears with him this time. He brought Bella and Charlie, Alice and himself. He brought words that came as whispers in the wind, words she couldn't make out but she understood the reasoning. He brought belief that she was dying.

Had this been earlier, many years earlier, she would have welcomed the news. But the sound of Bella crying out for her reminded her of the reason she was in the dark. She knew she wasn't going to die, death shouldn't have been this uncomfortable.

She didn't want to die.

Her eyes opened, to a bright, white light. Death was way too easy.

She was in an unfamiliar room, a white room. The wall beside her was covered in long vertical blinds. the overhead lights blinded her. She was in a hard, uncomfortable bed. Insistent beeping came from somewhere nearby- a heart monitor, yelling she was still alive.

Her hands were covered in clear tubes, one in a cast. On her faces she could feel even more tubes and wanted to rip them out.

People around her were talking, some yelling. Many wanted her attention, to make she she was calm. The people were a blur, they rushed in and out, she never even saw most of there faces.

She became much more anxious as time passed, her heart rate could be heard speeding up. This was all too much. The light brought so much more trouble.

A pale, cold hand was what calmed her down. It was surely a Cullen, only few people could receive that type of response from her.

"Andrea, can you hear me?" Carlisle called to her softly.

"Andy," She choked out on instinct. A smile graced Carlisle's face. Only Andy would respond that way. "What happened?" she whispered.

"Bella fell down a flight of stairs. You tired to stop her and went through a window," his voice was steady and reassuring. "You saved her life."

Andy felt her eyes water. She knew what happened, it was something she would never forget. The red eyes would haunt er for the rest of her life. The news that Bella survived was what she needed, that her attempts weren't in vain.

She nodded her head, tears tracks staining her cheeks. "How bad was she?"

"She had a broken leg and a few broken ribs." Carlisle's voice became serious. "Some cracks in her skull. She had to get a few blood transfusions."

Andy nodded, it all sounded more or less correct. She heaved a sigh and winced as it sent a jolt of pain through her.

"Me?" she asked hesitantly.

"More or less the same," he admits. "A little worse off though. You had a broken arm instead of leg and many more blood transfusions than she did.

Andy glanced around the room, and only continued speaking when she saw it was just them. "How many times did he bite me?" her voice was wary. She didn't want the answer but she had to know.

Carlisle gave her a sad smile. "Three on the neck, at least five on each arm. You won't be able to notice them unless you know what to look for. He didn't drink from every one either."

"I know," she admits. "He told me, he just wanted to make Jasper angry."

"It worked," Alice's voice drifted from the door. Andy had never seen her so happy. "You gave us all quite the scare. I saw you dying right up until about 10 minutes ago."

Andy's eyes widened. She didn't know what to say.

"There are people waiting out in the hall." Alice opens the door wide and gestures for someone to come in. "Oh, and happy Sixteenth Birthday Andy."
