Family Session
Song: Somebody Else- Katelyn Tarver
Sarah greets my parents and Carter...however Carter chooses to stay out of the session and waves us off. I watch as he walks away to sit down with his hands in his pockets, shutting himself out from the world around him. I'm not sure if he wants to really hear everything and maybe that's a good thing. So the three of us go in with Sarah. I sit in the comfy chair off to the side. My parents sit on the couch beside me and they look at me and back at Sarah waiting on one of us to start talking.
Both of them are dressed really nice for the day and look like they are attending church rather than their daughter in a mental facility. I bet they would never thought they would have ever been here many years ago. They look so uncomfortable sitting in here and I use to be when I started coming here but I am use to it by now. I sit and look back and forth waiting on someone to just start talking.
"So how is everything going?" My dad finally asks Sarah breaking the silence.
"Well we...or should I say Coralie has made a lot of improvements over the week. She's doing really well. She is following through with her treatment and opening up more in our sessions, which is a good thing." She smiles at me.
My mom smiles politely at her as she moves in her seat to cross her legs. "I see she is making friends...that's good right?" She quickly looks at me for a second to see my reaction and then back at Sarah. I'm not sure she actually likes who I am making friends with but she doesn't say anything about it so that's a plus.
Sarah has the perfect smile as always on her face. "Yes...she is starting to open up to others. It's good for her to be able to make friends here." I know she is glad that I have started opening up to others here.
"So we can take her home now?" Dad asks without wasting any more time. I watch how he thumbs his fingers against his legs and his right foot keeps twitching. He looks so nervous. My dad of all people looks nervous sitting here in front of Sarah like he is the one in trouble, yes my dad the famous lawyer who wins massive cases.
"Maybe another week or two."
He shakes his head in disappointment as he grabs onto his leg harder. "I thought you said she was doing great."
"She is...however I don't feel that she is ready to go home just yet." Sarah keeps looking at the papers in front of her and I know she is looking over my case.
My mom keeps looking at my dad as if she wants to say something but doesn't have the guts to. She even acts like she wants to reach out to him a few times but hesitates and places her hand back against her leg. She never says anything.
We all just sit there for an awkward moment and I just can't take it any longer so I finally ask her, "What is it...what's going on?" I can just feel that something is wrong.
"What do you mean, sweetheart," says my dad.
"I feel like there is something you guys want to say to me. Just tell me already I'm a big girl; I'm sure I can handle it."
He looks at my mom. She shrugs her shoulders and then he looks back at me. "We sold the house...we are moving." He says softly as if that will make things any better. "We are in the process of finding a new home."
"Why...you guys love that house."
He looks down at the floor. I know he is trying to figure out a way to say whatever it is. He looks back up at me, tear filled eyes. His hand reaches for mine. "We love you so much Coralie."
I say the first thing that comes to my mind, "You're gonna leave me here aren't you?" My eyes start to water up.
"NO...it's not like that."
"So you're going to send me off somewhere...far away. You're ashamed of having a daughter like me. I get it...I do...I don't blame you." Between each breath I take he is saying me name.
"Coralie....Coralie....Coralie...stop. We would never do that. We love you." He looks at my mom for a second then back to me. "There is just..." he tightens up his grip on my hand, "there is just too many bad memories there...I won't take you back there."
I shake my head in disbelief. "I don't understand."
"Every time I turn a corner I see him there. I go out by the pool he is there. I go inside he is there. If I can't get him out of my mind how in the hell will you be able to. I don't want you coming home and feeling like he is there and feeling like you're not safe. So we are moving, starting fresh, with you of course. I would never leave you behind." He holds my mom's hand with his other hand. "We would never do that."
"You would move for me...what about Carter he loves that house too." Shit there are bad memories there but there are also so many good memories.
"Carter is graduating in a few weeks. He will be moving out anyway."
My mom attempts to smile; she has tears in her eyes too. "You can go to a new school...make new friends...start all over."
I think of my friends and those that were really never my friends but know me. I think of Harley and Tyler...pictures. Shit everyone has seen them by now, maybe even them. "A new school...start out fresh...where no one knows me...starting over like I never existed. No one will know the girl that liked to party...the girl that got around...you are just trying to protect me from all of my mistakes."
"It's not like that Coralie," says my mom.
"Is it not! So we will move...you're right that house just reminds me of him after all it is why I started the fire in the pool house."
"Coralie we know," my dad says. "You don't have to explain."
"I don't...really...I told you years ago that I didn't like him. I begged you that night not to let me go to his house. I asked you remember...I asked you why you like him so much and do you remember what you said?"
He shakes his head.
"You said he was a good guy...that he was like family. If he was family he wouldn't have touched me like that. If he was a good guy he wouldn't have hurt me." Tears silently escape my over filled watery eyes.
"I'm sorry...I don't..." his voice cracks.
"You don't..." I interrupt him. "You shook his hand so many nights...the hand that touched me...you would smile at him like everything was just fine. I was a fucking kid how do you think I should have reacted to..."
He doesn't let me finish as he pulls me into him. I have never heard him cry this hard and I know its guilt. He couldn't protect me; he couldn't see the broken girl standing before him.
"I swear to God...I didn't know...I swear to you...I would never let anyone hurt you...you got to believe me...I love you. God I love you, Coralie." He holds me so tight as he pours everything out of him.
"We will get through this, alright. We will move...you can go to a new school, no one will ever have to know about the addiction...the pictures...nothing."
Pictures...
Did he say pictures?
So it's really about the pictures. It all makes perfectly good since now. I bet they leaked out to the whole town. I bet this ruined him getting elected for judge. That's the real reason why we are moving. He is ashamed and embarrassed of his daughter.
"Daddy...the pictures...you seen them all?"
He doesn't have to say anything; I know he has. He looks down at the floor and I remember back to that night, a glimpse of that night. How could I ever forget that look.
"Daddy...I didn't know about them you got to believe me...I would never do that."
"I know...it wasn't my girl in those pictures; it was Cora. I know...and even then she didn't know. He gave you a rape drug...I know all about it; it wasn't your fault."
I could easily blame it all on him but I couldn't because it wasn't just him. "I took the drug. He offered it. I sniffed it. It is all my fault."
"Don't say that. He tricked you; he knew what he was doing." His voice became a little rougher and his lawyer side was coming out of him.
"Daddy..."
"Coralie...don't worry. There are no more pictures. Carter took his phone and you were not the only one. Don't worry he will never do that again to anyone."
"How do you know that?"
"I just do." He looks at Sarah. "So you think just another week or two right...maybe we will be situated in the new house by then."
And just like that the subject was dropped. He always had his ways with switching topics, guess that's a lawyer for you.
