Chapter 20
Cora shot Yoongi a horrified look when she saw not one but two SUVs with tinted windows waiting for them, and a total of eight security guys.
"Jiwo-hyung, this is excessive! Why so many?" Yoongi asked.
Jiwo glanced at Cora before answering. "There have been threats on social media. We need to be much more careful than we have been so far."
Yoongi looked at him searchingly. "What threats? Threats against who?"
"Let's get in the vehicles quickly," Jiwo answered, scanning the parking garage.
They drove toward the fountain, which was only a couple of blocks from the hotel. Jiwo turned and told Cora and Yoongi that ARMY social media had been blowing up since late the night before. "Someone posted photos of you two in Central Park on Naver and Twitter. They have spread all over social media. Hybe is tracking the original poster, but it's a dangerous situation. Three photos show you holding hands, and one shows Cora's face when she took off her mask to eat ice cream. There have been multiple threats of bodily harm against Cora, so you will be visiting the fountain separately, and will both have at least four-point coverage at all times. Is that clear?"
Cora looked at Yoongi. His clenched jaw and gimlet eyes told her all she needed to know about his reaction to this news.
Jiwo continued, with Jiwon translating to English for Cora as he drove. "We need to be very alert, because there are many fans here for the concerts. Don't let your guard down for a moment. Make sure to keep your cap and mask on. Are there any questions before we disembark? Yoongi-shi will go first, and Cora-shi will follow once we give the all-clear. Cora, your lead will be Kang Dae."
Yoongi growled quietly as Jiwon parked, and reached over to squeeze Cora's hand. Then he put on his cap and mask and stepped down from the SUV.
It was hard to blend in with the other tourists, since he had four security guards in a box formation around him. He strode quickly to the fountain and took a couple of photos. Jiwo radioed an all-clear to Cora's team, instructing them to take up a diamond formation around her as they moved to the other side of the plaza.
As Kang Dae was steering her toward the left-hand side of the fountain, some ARMYs spotted Yoongi. "Suga, I love you!" one yelled, and soon they were all shouting at him in English. Yoongi nodded slightly at them and turned to go back to the SUV.
Suddenly, one of the fans noticed Cora. "It's her!" the ring-leader yelled. They ran toward her, screaming "Bitch! You're not good enough for Yoongi!" "Stay the fuck away from him, punk! We will kill you!" Kang Dae grabbed her elbow but she shook him off and opened video mode on her phone camera. Calmly scanning across the approaching mob, she said in a loud clear voice, "Enjoy jail, psychos!"
Kang Dae took her elbow firmly in his hand as the other guards closed ranks and frog-marched her to the vehicle. Yoongi was already inside, visibly fuming.
"Cora, are you OK?" he asked urgently. "They didn't hurt you, right?"
"I'm fine, D. Don't make a fuss. Some of your fans are crazy bitches, though!" She shook her head at him.
He grabbed her hand and tucked it into the crook of his arm, squeezing it tightly to him.
Cora took off her mask and smiled reassuringly. "I'm really fine, D, I promise. Are you OK?"
Yoongi growled, and looked at Jiwo. "OK, so tourism is not going to happen now. What is the new security plan?" he asked in Korean.
"We will update the threat assessment and create new protocols today. The two of you need to lay low. No more couple outings. You will have the full team whenever you move around outside of the hotel or the venue." Jiwo paused and gave them an unusually sympathetic look. "I have heard that the other band members have a lot of card games. Maybe you two should join."
Jiwo looked over his shoulder to where Kang Dae was sitting in the back seat, and gave him a tiny nod.
"Cora-shi..." Kang Dae's voice sounded hesitant. "For your safety, just for now, maybe it will be better if you wear a different style of clothes that are not so distinctive. And your makeup."
Yoongi immediately protested. "You can't ask her to buy a whole new wardrobe! Just do your jobs and keep her safe!"
Cora patted his arm with her free hand and said placatingly, "It's OK, D. I was just thinking this morning that I have been wearing this style since I started high school, but it doesn't really make sense. I'm not a punk rocker, I do jazz and pop and R&B and now hip hop." She smiled and shrugged. "It's time to upgrade my clothes a little bit."
Yoongi sighed. "If you're happy, I'm happy. You know that you're beautiful in any clothes. Or no clothes."
She pretended to gasp in shock and slapped his arm, and they both laughed.
"But G, you have to keep your Doc Marten boots, OK?" he asked, giving her puppy dog eyes.
She blushed. "OK, D. Just for you, the Docs stay." She gave him a peck on his cheek as the SUV rolled to a stop in the hotel's underground parking lot.

Cora was just reaching for her phone to call Nana when there was a knock at her hotel room door. Yoongi met her eyes over his laptop, and went to answer it.
"Ah, Kyoung Eun-shi, welcome!" he said in Korean to the smiling woman as they exchanged bows. "Cora, this is Lee Kyoung Eun," he said. "She is one of the stylists for the tour. I think you met in New Jersey, yes?"
"Oh, that's right. Hello! Nice to see you." Cora was trying not to show that she was puzzled. "What can I do for you, Kyoung Eun-shi?" she asked.
"Well, I have a bunch of ideas for your new look, Cora-shi, so is it OK if I show you some options?"
"Wait, I'm getting styled? I thought the point was to blend in. I should have the most boring clothes possible, right?"
Kyoung Eun looked at her as if she had suggested wearing a coat made out of Dalmatian puppies. "You can still look nice, just not too noticeable!" she exclaimed.
Cora glanced at Yoongi, who made a silly frowny face at her and then looked down at his computer again. She sighed, and motioned for Kyoung Eun to sit down on the bottom of the bed with her. The older woman pulled out a tablet and started to scroll with her stylus.
"OK, so there are so many fun trends for this summer! How do you feel about this?" She pointed to a model wearing an ocean-blue, skin-tight, sequined dress.
"You are kidding, right?" Cora replied.
"No mermaidcore. Got it," Kyoung Eun muttered. She opened a different file. "Denim is very on trend these days. What about this maxi skirt?"
Cora stared at the pencil skirt with a look of horrified fascination. "How is that even worse than mermaidcore?" she asked. Yoongi tried to turn his laughter into a cough.
"Hmm..." The stylist flipped through several files. "Are you OK with animal prints?"
The withering look said it all.
"Cut out dresses? Oh, and fringe is huge right now. Look at what happens when you take an ombre print and add fringe!"
Cora started to stand up from the bed, and Yoongi burst out in laughter. "G, why don't you show her your normie clothes?" he suggested.
Cora nodded at him, and walked over to the suitcase stand. She pulled out a floral halter top, a flutter-hem cardigan, some white jeans, and a pair of strappy wedge sandals. "This is my normal person disguise," she laughed.
Kyoung Eun stood up and cocked her head to one side, nodding. "OK, OK, California casual, I can work with this," she said. "Would you do a wide-legged denim pant?"
"Uh, I guess so. But none of these stupid bows or little roses."
"Can we get a bit daring and go for some sheers? You have the body to pull it off!"
Yoongi's head whipped up again suddenly, and he frowned. "Noona, she's supposed to not be noticed!" Both women laughed.
The stylist began to scroll again. "Wait, go back," Cora said. "I like this look."
Kyoung Eun tried to hide her disappointment. "Grunge revival? OK. Can we mix it up with some fun silver metallics and some scarlet pieces?"
"Uh, I guess so? But again, keep it low-key. Absolutely no sequins!"
"OK, I understand. I will send Ji Hye-eonnie up next to consult about makeup."
"Oh, no need. I'm going to stop wearing makeup. Bare face is as far from punk as you can get."
Kyoung Eun hesitated. "Can I... can I see what you look like without makeup? I'm curious!"
Cora smiled. "Sure, just a second. I'll go scrub."
Yoongi said to the stylist in Korean, "She's so pretty without makeup, noona. You'll be amazed."
Kyoung Eun smiled fondly at him. "I've never seen you smitten like this, Yoongi-shi." He blushed.
Cora walked out dabbing her face with a towel.
The stylist stared at her, mouth slightly open. "Wow. You look like a totally different person! So innocent and fresh!"
Cora rolled her eyes and laughed. "Yeah, yeah. I know it makes me look young. But maybe Yoongi's stalkers won't recognize me this way."
Kyoung Eun smiled, her eyes still scanning Cora's face. "I'll let Ji-hye know that you have the makeup aspect figured out, then." She walked to the door. "We'll go shopping for some new things for you, and I'll drop them off this afternoon."
"Oh, uh, OK. Should I give you my credit card?"
"No, no need. This is considered a security measure, so the company is going to cover it."
"What?! That's crazy! Are you sure?"
Kyoung Eun winked at her. "Just say thanks to Nam Jiwo-shi, next time you see him," she said, bowing and closing the door behind her.
Cora stared at the door for a moment, then walked over to grab the "Do Not Disturb" sign off the handle. She turned and gave Yoongi a flirty look and he grinned back, starting to unbutton his shirt. Just then, Cora's phone rang.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Nana? Yes, I was going to call you this afternoon. Good timing." Cora aimed a pout at Yoongi, who laughed and then pouted back at her as he re-buttoned his top two buttons. "I dunno, let me ask. Yoongi, how are you today?"
"I'm well. How is Nana halmeoni?"
"He says he's well, and enquires about you. Yeah, of course he's here, where else would he be? OK, I'll let him know." She pulled the phone away from her face and said, "Nana is counting the days until she gets to meet you." She rolled her eyes and laughed.
He grinned. "Tell her same, same from me."
Cora gave him a droll look as she put the phone back up to her ear. "He says same, same, Nana. Um-hm." She walked over to pull the curtain open and look out at the view of downtown Chicago. "Oh? What's the news?" She ran her hand through her hair. "What?! Seriously?! Do they know who did it?" Cora turned to look at Yoongi again, her eyes wide. "How? Oh, gross. Uh-huh... OK, well, we're here for the rest of the week, if they have questions for me. I don't know anything, though." Yoongi raised his eyebrows as high as they would go. "Yeah, OK. Love you too, Nana. See you soon."
"What happened?" he asked as she hung up.
Cora sighed heavily. "They found Ray. Some kayakers found his body in a pond in the New Jersey Pinelands. Nana said they had to use dental records from the Army to identify him." She wrinkled her nose.
Yoongi scanned her face carefully. "How do you feel, G?" he asked, standing up and walking toward her.
She sighed again and shrugged. "I'm fine. I mean, it's too bad he went out that way. Nana said that he had been shot at least six times, so I don't think it was suicide." She gave a dry bark of a laugh, and met his gaze. Yoongi just watched her, concern in his eyes.
"Nana said that the FBI might want to talk to us, since we were the last known people to see him alive." Yoongi nodded. "She heard about it from my mother..." Cora's voice trailed off and she stared out the window for a long moment with unseeing eyes. In a distant voice, she said, "She said the weirdest thing about mom. She said, 'I can't believe this is happening to her again.'" Cora turned to meet his eyes. "'Again?' What the hell did that mean?!"
